Israel to start human trials on Covid vaccine from Nov 1

The three stages of the human clinical trial of the Israeli vaccine&nbsp;involving over 30,000 volunteers are likely to last till mid-2021

Israel Institute for Biological Research&nbsp;will start human clinical trials of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate Brilife from November 1. The institute has got all necessary approvals from the Ministry of Health and the Helsinki Committee that&nbsp;deals with research approval and human experiments.&nbsp;The three stages of the human clinical trial involving over 30,000 volunteers are likely to last till mid-2021 and if all goes well, the vaccine could be ready for mass use only after that.&nbsp;The first phase of the human trial will include a series of safety tests with the participation of 80 healthy volunteers.

Jerusalem, PTI: Israel Institute for Biological Research (IIBR) will start human clinical trials of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate Brilife from November 1. The institute has got all necessary approvals from the Ministry of Health and the Helsinki Committee, the Israeli Defence Ministry said.
The Helsinki Committee deals with research approval and human experiments.
The committee is mandated to ensure the well being and rights of trial volunteers and to ensure that the experiment is conducted as per the approved medical guidelines and ethics, besides various domestic laws, rules and regulations.
The guidelines are outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki and various relevant international conventions.
The three stages of the human clinical trial involving over 30,000 volunteers are likely to last till mid-2021 and if all goes well, the vaccine could be ready for mass use only after that.
"This is a day of hope for the citizens of Israel, thanks to the IIBR researchers. Just two months ago I received the first bottle of the vaccine. Today we already have 25,000 vaccine doses and are starting the next phase of the test," said Alternate Prime Minister-cum-Defence Minister Benny Gantz.
"I would like to thank the dozens of researchers who work day and night on this national mission in full cooperation with the Ministry of Health. In this complex period, you are the 'commando unit' paving the way for the citizens of Israel. You took on a mission of international and historical importance," Gantz was quoted as saying in an official statement.
"The defence establishment, the Israeli government, and I will continue to provide you with the support and resources required to produce a safe and effective 'blue-and-white' vaccine," he stressed.
"Blue and White" refers to the colours in the Israeli flag, which also happens to be the name of the defence minister's party.
The first phase of the human trial will include a series of safety tests with the participation of 80 healthy volunteers (aged 18-55), designated by Sheba and Hadassah medical centres.
The trial will begin on November 1 with two participants initially. Depending on their responses, the vaccine will then be gradually administered to a total of 80 volunteers -- 40 in each medical centre.
Each volunteer will receive an injection and discharged after a few hours of observation. They will then be monitored over three weeks.

Nagorno-Karabakh fighting continues despite truce effort

Armenia and Azerbaijan reported more fighting on Tuesday over the separatist territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, where clashes have continued for over three weeks despite two attempts at establishing a cease-fire.
Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry said the hostilities carried on overnight and accused Armenian forces of shelling the Terter and the Agdam regions of Azerbaijan in the morning.
Armenian Defense Ministry spokeswoman Shushan Stepanian reported &ldquo;intensive fierce battles&rdquo; on Tuesday morning in the southern areas of the conflict zone, and alleged that Azerbaijani forces were using aviation and artillery in the northern sector.
The two countries announced a cease-fire on Saturday in a bid to halt the fighting that has killed hundreds since Sept. 27, when clashes resumed in the worst escalation of a decades-old conflict. The agreement &mdash; just like a cease-fire deal brokered by Russia a week earlier &mdash; was almost immediately challenged by mutual claims of violations and the fighting resumed unabated.
Nagorno-Karabakh lies within Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since a war there ended in 1994.
By then, Armenian forces not only held Nagorno-Karabakh itself but also captured substantial areas outside the territory's borders.
According to Nagorno-Karabakh officials, 773 of their troops have been killed since Sept. 27, along with over 30 civilians. Azerbaijan hasn't disclosed its military losses, but says 61 civilians have died so far and 282 have been wounded.
The deadly flighting prompted calls for cessation of hostilities from around the globe and raised concerns of a wider conflict involving Turkey, which has publicly supported Azerbaijan, and Russia, which has a security pact with Armenia.
On Oct. 9, Moscow hosted the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan. After more than 10 hours of talks, they announced a cease-fire deal, which was violated minutes after it took force.
The new truce announced on Saturday followed Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's calls with his counterparts from Armenia and Azerbaijan, in which he strongly urged them to abide by the Moscow deal. Despite the agreement, both sides have reported new attacks.
The Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers are scheduled to meet with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington on Friday.
Last week Pompeo said Washington was making diplomatic efforts to help achieve a sustainable settlement to the conflict and called on both countries to &ldquo;implement their agreed-upon commitments to a cease-fire." Russia, the US and France co-chair the so-called Minsk Group, set up by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in the 1990s to mediate the conflict.&nbsp;
