'Touchdown declared', a flight controller announced on Tuesday to cheers and applause as NASA's&nbsp;Osiris-Rex spacecraft touched the surface of asteroid Bennu.
The spacecraft was sent to collect cosmic rubble back to the Earth for further analysis but it would take another week to confirm how much rubble, if it all, was collected and whether another attempt&nbsp;would be needed.
Following commands sent well in advance by ground controllers near Denver, the spacecraft took 4.5 hours to make its way down from its tight orbit around Bennu&nbsp;

NASA's&nbsp;Osiris-Rex spacecraft would be touching down on a&nbsp;skyscraper-sized asteroid, 200 million miles away on Tuesday and if all goes as planned, it will bring back chunks of the asteroid for further research.&nbsp;
Osiris-Rex will use its robotic arm to collect the samples of asteroid Bennu&nbsp;instead of landing on the surface of the asteroid.
Nasa&nbsp;shared that Bennu, which is a primitive asteroid and believed to have formed over&nbsp;4.5 billion years ago, could give important information about life on Earth.
The asteroid could also be rich in gold and platinum and this could help researchers study the feasibility of asteroid mining.&nbsp;
