Emergency crews in Oregon rescued 30 people Friday after they were stuck for close to half an hour dangling upside down high on a ride at a century-old amusement park.
Portland Fire and Rescue said on the social platform X that firefighters worked with engineers at Oaks Park to manually lower the ride, but crews had been preparing to conduct a high-angle ropes rescue if necessary. All riders were being evacuated and medically evaluated, and there were no reports of injuries.
Video shot by a passenger on a neighbouring Ferris wheel shows people sitting upside down on the AtmosFEAR ride as it sits suspended in midair. The ride operates like a pendulum, eventually swinging the riders completely upside down.
Oaks Park first opened in 1905. Its website says it offers a &ldquo;uniquely Portland blend of modern thrills and turn-of-the-century charm on a midway that has delighted generations of Northwesterners.&rdquo;

California's weather troubles continue as a fresh storm threatened to hit the US state on 13 March 2023.
Even as an atmospheric river that caused major flooding moved eastward, the National Weather Service warned that fresh rain and snow might exacerbate the severe flooding suffered in recent days. The fresh storm is expected to affect areas from central California to Oregon and northern Nevada.
Earlier, widespread evacuations were carried out from the central coast area. Across Monterey County, more than 8,500 people were evacuated Saturday, including roughly 1,700 residents &mdash; many of them Latino farmworkers &mdash; from the unincorporated community of Pajaro.
&ldquo;We are still in disaster response mode,&rdquo; said Monterey County spokesman Nicholas Pasculli on Sunday. He said the county is staging high water rescue teams around the county and opening more shelters in anticipation of more flooding.
Highway 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, is closed at several points along Big Sur as well as near Pajaro due to flooding.

"According to witnesses, two vehicles may have been involved," a police statement said. "Neither vehicle stayed at the scene of the shooting." Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact them.
There has been a surge in gun violence in Portland in recent years, and the homicide rate has gone 207% since 2019. Two students were wounded in a drive-by shooting in October near a different high school in Portland.

Nancy Crampton Brophy, 71, was convicted of second-degree murder on May 25 following a seven-week trial. Her sentence Monday includes the possibility of parole after 25 years in custody, KGW-TV reported Monday.
Prosecutors said Crampton Brophy fatally shot Dan Brophy, 63, inside the now-closed Oregon Culinary Institute where he worked in 2018 because she stood to gain financially from his life insurance payout. The case drew national attention because of the essay that Crampton Brophy had penned years earlier, but the piece was not permitted as evidence at trial.
The prosecution told jurors the couple had been facing financial difficulties at the time of the murder and contended that she had researched and purchased a “ghost gun” kit online and then later bought a Glock 17 handgun at a gun show.
Crampton Brophy's attorney argued the state's evidence was circumstantial, disputed the claims of financial trouble and brought in witnesses who testified about the couple's strong and loving relationship. Crampton Brophy also took the stand and said she and her husband had both purchased life insurance policies as part of their retirement planning and had a plan to reduce their debt.
She also said her research into ghost guns was in preparation for a future novel.
