US President Donald Trump repeated the claim that he stopped the war between India and Pakistan last year, which he said could have turned nuclear, through tariffs.
"I settled eight wars. Of the eight wars, at least six were settled because of tariffs. In other words, I said, &lsquo;if you don't settle this war, I'm going to charge you tariffs, because I don't want to see people getting killed,&rdquo; Trump said in an interview to Fox Business Tuesday.
"And they said, &lsquo;Well, what does this have to do?&rsquo; I said, &lsquo;you're going to be charged&rsquo;. Like India and Pakistan. It would have been a nuclear war, in my opinion. They were really going at it, 10 planes were shot down. They were going at it,&rdquo; Trump said.
He added that the Prime Minister of Pakistan said, &lsquo;President Trump saved at least 10 million lives when he got us to stop fighting&rsquo;. Because they were going to go nuclear, (in) my opinion. Without tariffs, that wouldn't happen,&rdquo; Trump said.
Trump has claimed credit for stopping the India-Pakistan conflict for more that 80 times since May 10 last year, when he announced on social media that the two neighbours had agreed to a &ldquo;full and immediate&rdquo; ceasefire after talks mediated by Washington.
India has consistently denied any third-party intervention.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 last year, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.&nbsp;

The Army chief, addressing a press conference, said the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China has been stable, but it needs constant vigil.&nbsp;
Extensively elaborating on various aspects of Operation Sindoor, Gen Dwivedi said it helped in resetting the strategic assumptions as the Indian military struck deep to dismantle terror infrastructure and puncturing Islamabad's "longstanding nuclear rhetoric".
"As you may be aware, Operation Sindoor remains ongoing, and a future misadventure will be resolutely responded to," he said.&nbsp;
Gen Dwivedi said the operation was India's calibrated and resolute response to cross-border terrorism, demonstrating readiness, precision, and strategic clarity. He also said that the Indian Army had mobilised its troops and was ready for ground offensives.
"The situation along the northern front remains stable, but needs constant vigil. Renewed contact, and confidence-building measures are contributing to the gradual normalisation of the situation," he said.
"Concurrently, capability development and infrastructure enhancement are progressing through a whole-of-government approach," he added. The Army chief said the situation in Jammu and Kashmir remains sensitive but firmly under control.

"I ended eight wars. I &mdash; If you look at those wars, these were tough wars to end, too. And let me tell you, India and Pakistan were going at it. As you know, they were going at it...But that was one of eight. But we ended eight strong wars. Some have been going on for more than 30 years,&rdquo; Trump said in an interview to The New York Times last week.
He asserted that no one else has ended eight wars and repeated his criticism of former President Barack Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009.
"I've ended &mdash; remember this, I&rsquo;ve ended eight wars. Nobody else has ever done that. I&rsquo;ve ended eight wars and didn&rsquo;t get the Nobel Peace Prize. Pretty amazing. Obama got it. He was there for a few weeks, and he got it. He didn&rsquo;t even know why he got it. They asked him, why did he get it? He was unable to answer the question,&rdquo; he said.
This was the third time in as many days last week that Trump claimed credit for stopping the conflict between India and Pakistan, an assertion he has now made about 80 times since May 10 last year, when he announced on social media that India and Pakistan agreed to a &ldquo;full and immediate&rdquo; ceasefire after a &ldquo;long night&rdquo; of talks mediated by Washington.
India has consistently denied any third-party intervention.
During a meeting in the White House on Friday with oil and gas executives to discuss plans for the Venezuelan oil reserves, Trump said, &ldquo;Look, whether people like Trump or don't like Trump, I settled eight wars, big ones. Some going on for 36 years, 32 years, 31 years, 28 years, 25 years, some just getting ready to start like India and Pakistan, where already eight jets were shot out of the air, and I got it done in rapid order without nuclear weapons.&rdquo;
Trump also said that Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif, who had visited the White House last year, credited him for saving millions of lives by stopping the conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
The Pakistani leader "made a very public statement. He said that President Trump saved a minimum of 10 million lives, having to do with Pakistan and India, and that was going to be raging,&rdquo; he said.
Earlier, in an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Trump said he stopped the war between India and Pakistan, the two nuclear powers "ready to go at it big&rdquo; as he again claimed that eight planes were shot down in the conflict.
He said one should get a Nobel Prize for stopping each war.
&ldquo;Because some of these wars were going on for 30 years. India and Pakistan were ready to go at it big. And these are two nuclear countries. I got that one stopped. Eight planes were shot down. They were really at it, and I got it stopped. It was a big one,&rdquo; Trump had said.

"Now the Chinese Foreign Minister makes a similar claim and says China also mediated. On July 4, 2025, the Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen Rahul Singh had publicly stated that during Operation Sindoor, India was actually confronting and combating China.
"Given that China was decisively aligned with Pakistan, Chinese claims of having mediated between India and Pakistan are concerning &ndash; not just because they directly contradict what the people of our country have been led to believe, but because they seem to make a joke of our national security itself," he added.
He said the claim must also be understood in the context of our relationship with China.
"We have begun re-engagement with them &ndash; but unfortunately it has been on Chinese terms. The Prime Minister's clean chit to China on June 19, 2020, has considerably weakened India's negotiating position," he said.
The Congress leader said our trade deficit is at a record high, and much of the country's exports are dependent on imports from China.
"Provocative actions by China in relation to Arunachal Pradesh continue unabated," he said.
"Amidst such a lopsided - and hostile - relationship, the people of India need clarity on what role China played in the abrupt halt to Operation Sindoor," Ramesh said.

<h3> Growing Up Amid Terror Attacks</h3>
Reflecting on the 1993 serial blasts, Bhanushali highlighted that a suburban railway station just 200 metres from his home was among the targets:
&ldquo;I grew up under the shadows of these tragedies. So when someone claims that India&rsquo;s tough stance towards Pakistan is merely populism masquerading as security policy, you might understand why I bristle.&rdquo;
<h3> Challenging the Populism Argument</h3>
Bhanushali addressed claims that India&rsquo;s responses were politically motivated:
&ldquo;To win this debate, I do not need to use rhetoric. I simply need to use a calendar.&rdquo;
He cited the March 1993 blasts to demonstrate that attacks occurred independently of elections:
&ldquo;Was there an election in March 1993? No. That election was 3 years away... Terror did not come because we needed a vote. It came because Dawood and the ISI wanted to fracture India's financial spine. That was not populism. That was an act of war.&rdquo;
<h3> India&rsquo;s Response After 26/11</h3>
Bhanushali described the aftermath of 26/11:
&ldquo;What would a populist government do after 26/11? The public rage was nuclear. A populist leader would have just launched the jets to win the next election.&rdquo;
Instead, he said:
&ldquo;The government of the day, the Congress party, chose strategic restraint. Did the non-populist approach buy us peace? No. It bought us Pathankot. It bought us Uri. It bought us Pulwama.&rdquo;

&ldquo;They didn&rsquo;t ask who they voted for. They executed them.&rdquo;

And then what? We stopped. We did not invade. We did not occupy. That is not populism. That is professionalism.&rdquo;

&ldquo;You cannot shame a state that has no shame,&rdquo; referencing terror attacks including Pathankot, Uri, Pulwama, and Pahalgam.

US President Donald Trump said India and Pakistan &ldquo;were going at it&rdquo; and he ended the conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, repeating the claim once again.
Trump has so far repeated the claim nearly 70 times that he stopped the conflict in May between India and Pakistan.
&ldquo;In 10 months, I ended eight wars, including Kosovo (and) Serbia, Pakistan and India, they were going at it. Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia.&hellip; Armenia and Azerbaijan,&rdquo; Trump said on Tuesday in remarks to his supporters at a rally on the economy in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.
India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.
India has consistently denied any third-party intervention in resolving the conflict.
Meanwhile, Trump said Cambodia and Thailand have started fighting again and &ldquo;tomorrow&rdquo;, he will make a phone call to those countries.
&ldquo;Who else could say I'm going to make a phone call and stop a war of two very powerful countries, Thailand and Cambodia. They are going at it. But I&rsquo;ll do it. So we're making peace through strength. That's what we're doing,&rdquo; Trump said.
On immigration, Trump said that for the first time in 50 years, &ldquo;we now have reverse migration, which means more jobs, better wages and higher income for American citizens, not for illegal aliens.&rdquo;
He said that he has announced a permanent pause on &ldquo;Third World migration&rdquo;, including from &ldquo;hellholes" like Afghanistan, Haiti, Somalia and many other countries.
&ldquo;&hellip;Why can't we have some people from Norway, Sweden, just a few. Let's have a few from Denmark. Do you mind sending us a few people? Send us some nice people. Do you mind? But we always take people from Somalia, places that are a disaster, right? Filthy, dirty, disgusting, ridden with crime. The only thing they're good at is going after ships.&rdquo;
Last month, Trump had said he would &ldquo;permanently pause" migration from &ldquo;all Third World Countries&rdquo; and deport foreign nationals who are a &ldquo;security risk&rdquo; as his administration intensified its crackdown on immigration in the wake of the killing of a National Guard member by Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services issued new guidance allowing for &ldquo;negative, country-specific factors&rdquo; to be considered when vetting aliens from 19 high-risk countries.
These countries are Afghanistan, Burma, Burundi, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Laos, Libya, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, Turkmenistan, Venezuela and Yemen.
These are the same countries that were subject to a travel ban announced by Trump in a proclamation issued in June this year.
The proclamation &lsquo;Restricting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats' restricted and limited the entry of nationals of these countries into the US and applied to both immigrants and nonimmigrants.

"Now Mr. Rubio has once again reminded the world of what Mr. Trump has been saying repeatedly. No wonder the Modi-Trump huglomacy is in deep freeze," Ramesh said.
During a Cabinet meeting at the White House on Tuesday, Rubio said for the first time in decades, American foreign policy was guided solely by whether it made the US safer, stronger and more prosperous. "If it is, he's (Trump) for it. If it doesn't, he's against it. And that sort of clarity is transformational," he said.
"Not to mention all the other peace deals, very dangerous ones like India and Pakistan or Cambodia and Thailand, and so on... Mr President, I think you deserve tremendous credit for the transformational aspect of our foreign policy," Rubio said.
Earlier, at the Cabinet meeting, Trump repeated his claim that he had resolved several global conflicts, including between India and Pakistan, as he asserted that he should get the Nobel Peace Prize for each of the "eight wars" he has ended.
"We ended eight wars... But we're going to do one more, I think, I hope," Trump said, referring to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that within the first eight-nine months of his second term in the White House, he resolved conflicts between India and Pakistan, Thailand and Cambodia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, Kosovo and Serbia, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, Rwanda and Congo. He also credits himself for resolving the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Key Lessons from Operation Sindoor
General Dwivedi outlined three main lessons learned from the operation:
Integration Between Forces &ndash; &ldquo;Another thing is integration, which means that all forces, whether Army, Navy, Air Force, CAPF, anyone else need to have good integration, because today's battles are multi-domain. Just the army cannot fight a battle, everyone has to fight together...So many things have been mixed together.&rdquo;
Ensuring Proper Supplies &ndash; Highlighting the importance of logistics, he noted, &ldquo;We also cannot say how long a battle will last even today. This time we fought for 88 hours, next time it could be four months too or even four years. Looking at that, do we have enough supplies and weapons to fight that? If we do not have then we need to prepare for that.&rdquo;
Timely Decision - Making Across the Command Chain &ndash; &ldquo;Whenever some operation happened we learn from it, this time too we learned things. One of the things we learned was that the decision we have very less time to take any decision, and take a decision at every level on time.&rdquo;
India&rsquo;s Stance on State-Sponsored Terrorism
Dwivedi underlined India&rsquo;s firm position against countries supporting terrorism, saying: &ldquo;When a country encourages state-sponsored terrorism, it becomes a matter of concern for India. India talks about progress. If someone creates obstacles in our course, then we will have to take some action against them. When we talk about the new normal, we have said that talks and terror can't go together. All we are asking is to adopt a peaceful process, which we will cooperate with. Until then, we will treat terrorists and their sponsors alike.&rdquo;

He also noted that China's involvement has extended beyond defence supplies to include intelligence and diplomatic support, forming an 'all-weather' alliance intended to constrain India's rise.
Shringla spoke on India's foreign policy and strategic affairs on Monday during an interaction organised by the Pune International Centre (PIC) and moderated by former Indian Ambassador to China Gautam Bambawale.
He stated that India's foreign policy reflects a balance between realism and idealism, guided by developmental imperatives, strategic autonomy, and an inclusive global outlook.
Shringla, who also served as India's Chief Coordinator for the G20 Presidency, shared his perspectives on the country's evolving foreign policy, regional dynamics, and strategic priorities in a rapidly changing global order.
The discussion spanned critical themes, including India's relations with China and Pakistan, the changing nature of modern warfare, and the increasing role of technology, drones, and cyber tools in defence and diplomacy, according to a release issued by the PIC.
Shringla underlined the importance of strategic deterrence, skilled diplomacy, and a clear focus on domestic growth to strengthen India's international position.
Addressing questions on Pakistan's use of Chinese weaponry during Operation Sindoor, he described the conflict as "indicative of a deeper China-Pakistan strategic partnership".
He noted that China's involvement extended beyond defence supplies to include intelligence and diplomatic support, forming an 'all-weather' alliance intended to constrain India's rise, and called for a response through capacity building, innovation, and partnerships grounded in India's strategic interests.
On the Pakistan-US dynamic after Operation Sindoor, Shringla observed that Field Marshal Asim Munir had consolidated authority and regained Washington's attention under the Trump 2.0 administration.
Drawing from his experience as India's Ambassador to the United States, he contrasted Pakistan's short-term tactical approach with India's long-term, institutional diplomacy, according to a release.
He highlighted that India's strength lies in building durable partnerships across the US, Europe, the Indo-Pacific, and the Global South, anchored in shared democratic values, trade, technology, and security cooperation.
Shringla stressed that India does not accept third-party mediation in bilateral issues, in accordance with the Simla Agreement, and observed that the abrogation of Article 370 has integrated Jammu and Kashmir into the national mainstream, thereby restoring stability, except for sporadic incidents of cross-border terrorism.
Speaking on regional and global balancing, he highlighted the importance of the 'Neighbourhood First' policy, alongside deeper engagement with the Global South, West Asia, and Southeast Asia, the release added.
He also highlighted India's ambition to emerge as a "thought and technology" leader, citing the upcoming Global AI Summit as a key step in shaping governance frameworks for emerging technologies.
Discussing the US-China strategic rivalry, Shringla remarked that while the global order appears to be moving toward a G2 framework, India must not cede its strategic space.
He asserted that India's growing economic and technological capacity positions it as an indispensable third pole in a multi-polar world.
He urged a focus on strengthening domestic ecosystems in semiconductors, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, pharmaceuticals, and rare earths to reinforce India's global standing, the release added.

While speaking at a reception and dinner with business leaders in Tokyo on Tuesday, Trump said, &ldquo;Seven planes were shot down, seven brand new, beautiful planes were shot down, and they were going at it .. two big nuclear powers.&rdquo; The US President reiterated that he used trade to resolve the war between India and Pakistan.
&ldquo;I said to Prime Minister Modi, and I said to the prime minister, a very nice man, a very good man, and the Field Marshal over in Pakistan, I said, Look, we&rsquo;re not going to do any trade if you&rsquo;re going to be fighting,&rdquo; Trump said.
Trump said that India and Pakistan argued that war has nothing to do with trade with the US.

All of you are affected, right? And we said, No, we&rsquo;re not doing any deals if you&rsquo;re going to fight. And within about 24 hours, that was the end of that. The Chief of Air Staff also said that his force has proved to the world how air power can be effectively used in shaping military outcomes in just a few days.
Air Chief Marshal Singh was addressing air warriors on the occasion of the Air Force Day at the Hindon air base.
"Our performance in Operation Sindoor fills us with professional pride. We proved to the world how air power can be effectively used in shaping military outcome in just a few days," he said.
The Chief of Air Staff described Operation Sindoor as a shining example of what can be achieved through "meticulous planning, disciplined training and determined execution." "India's bold and precise attacks restored the rightful place of offensive air action in the national consciousness," he said.
"Our robust air defence architecture and offensive employment of long-range surface to air missiles systems limited the adversary's ability to operate and ensured safety of our vital assets," he said.
"The outstanding performance of the indigenously developed and integrated weapons which delivered precise and devastating blows deep inside enemy territory, vindicates our faith in home-grown capabilities," he said.
Air Chief Marshal Singh noted that the increasing pace of integration of new systems, weapons and equipment into the IAF's operational plans has been a "significant success".
"I can see that there is an increased culture of accountability, safety and security amongst the air warriors and this is directly reflected in our reduced incidents and accidents," he said.
"At all levels, leaders are leading from the front, demonstrating exceptional vision and empathy. They are ensuring that every individual is empowered with the necessary training and is motivated," he added.

Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif warned India after Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi&rsquo;s remark that Pakistan would be &ldquo;erased from the map&rdquo; if it continues supporting terrorism.

Two days after Indian army chief warned Islamabad that it will be erased from the world map if it continues sponsoring terrorism, Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Sunday cautioned New Delhi against any future military conflict, saying India would be &ldquo;buried under the wreckage of its warplanes".
Asif&rsquo;s response came days after India&rsquo;s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi cautioned Pakistan against any misadventure.
On Friday, Army Chief Gen Dwivedi said that the neighbouring country should stop sponsoring terrorism on its soil if wants to retain its place on the world map.
The Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) also said the restraint shown by New Delhi during Operation Sindoor would not be repeated in case of a future military conflict.
&ldquo;India, as a country, is fully prepared this time. And this time, it will not show the restraint that it showed during Operation Sindoor 1.0. This time we will take a step forward and act in a manner that will make Pakistan think whether it wants to remain on the world map or not,&rdquo; General Dwivedi said.
Separately, Air Chief Marshal A P Singh on Friday said at least a dozen Pakistani military aircraft, including US-origin F-16 jets, were destroyed or damaged in Indian strikes during Operation Sindoor.
The Chief of Air Staff also described Islamabad's claim of Indian losses as "fanciful stories".
"What we have gathered from the intelligence report is that because of these strikes, radars at least four places, command and control centres at two places, runways at two places and then three of their hangars in three different stations have been damaged," he said.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, speaking at an event in Hyderabad on Friday, asserted that the NDA government has demonstrated, through 2016 surgical strike, 2019 Balakot airstrike and the recent Operation Sindoor, that the country can cross any border whenever necessary to protect citizens and safeguard India&rsquo;s unity and integrity.
A day earlier, the defence minister said any misadventure by Islamabad in the Sir Creek sector will invite a &ldquo;decisive response&rdquo; that could be strong enough to change both &ldquo;history and geography&rdquo;.
Sir Creek is a 96-km-long tidal estuary between Gujarat&rsquo;s Rann of Kutch and Pakistan and is considered a disputed region due to varying interpretations of maritime boundary lines by both sides.
Asif took to social media to respond sharply to what he called provocative statements from New Delhi&rsquo;s top security establishment.
He termed some recent statements by Indian military and political leaders as a &ldquo;failed attempt&rdquo; to restore their lost credibility, which in his words was result of &ldquo;pressure&rdquo; after defeat in the May clashes.
&ldquo;The statements of the Indian military and political leadership are a failed attempt to restore their tarnished reputation. After such a decisive defeat with a score of 0-6, if they try again, the score, God willing, will be far better than before,&rdquo; he wrote.
He, however, did not elaborate what he meant by score of 0-6.

In a stern warning to Pakistan, Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi said on Friday that the neighbouring country should stop sponsoring terrorism on its soil if wants to retain its place on the world map.
The Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) also said the restraint shown by New Delhi during Operation Sindoor would not be repeated in case of a future military conflict and urged Indian soldiers to remain poised for action.
"India, as a country, is fully prepared this time. And this time, it will not show the restraint that it showed during Operation Sindoor 1.0. This time we will take a step forward and act in a manner that will make Pakistan think whether it wants to remain on the world map or not," General Dwivedi said in a sternly-worded address to soldiers at Anupgarh in Rajasthan's Sriganganagar district.
He asserted that if Pakistan wants to retain its place on the world map, it will have to stop state-sponsored terrorism.
The Army chief told the soldiers to stay prepared. "Keep yourselves fully prepared now, if god wants, the opportunity will come soon," he said.
Gen. Dwivedi said India has given evidence to the world of the presence of terrorist hideouts in Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. Had India not unearthed this evidence, Pakistan would have hidden all of it, he said.
The Army chief said the entire world stood with India when it launched Operation Sindoor in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam attack. He said the Indian military hit nine targets inside Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, of which seven were hit by the Army and two by the Air Force.
"We had identified the targets because we only wanted to harm the terrorists. We had aimed to strike their bases. We have no complaints against ordinary Pakistani citizens, so long as their country does not sponsor terrorists. Because terrorists were being sponsored, those terrorist targets were hit," Gen. Dwivedi said.
Replying to a question about his appeal to those living near the international border, he said, "We consider the border population not as ordinary civilians but as soldiers. That means they stand shoulder to shoulder with us in the battle. This is crucial because the coming struggle is the nation's struggle, not just the Army's." The Army chief said history bears witness that during the 1965 and 1971 wars, ordinary citizens stood shoulder to shoulder with the soldiers.
"We would want them to join us in the days ahead as well. I want to thank them -- their zeal boosts the morale of our soldiers," he said.&nbsp;

At a press conference ahead of the Air Force Day, the Air Chief Marshal also said the his force has drawn up a Roadmap 2047 to enhance its combat capabilities.
Delving into various aspects of Operation Sindoor, he said it was a reflection of tri-services synergy.
Asked about Pakistan's losses during Operation Sindoor, he said in the air we have evidence of one long-range strike of Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) and four to five fighters.
Pakistan's losses included radars, command and control centres, runways and hangars, he said.

CDS Gen Anil Chauhan said Operation Sindoor marked a paradigm shift in modern warfare, with India decisively beating Pakistan through precision, technology-led strikes across land, air, sea, cyber, and space domains.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, said Operation Sindoor heralded a "new kind of warfare", and ensured that India beat Pakistan decisively in every escalation during the strike.
Unlike traditional warfare, this was fought on land, in air and sea, electromagnetic space and cyber domains, where the adversary was seen only through the help of satellite and electronic images or signal intelligence, he said.
The top military officer also said the first strikes during the operation were conducted at 1 am to avoid civilian casualties across the border.
"It was a new kind of warfare... Till now, we have assumed victory in terms of capture of territory, the number of equipment destroyed, or the number of prisoners of war you have captured or soldiers you have killed...These were associated with traditional ways of fighting warfare.
"One of the matrices of victory over here is the sophistication of our attack, which was demonstrated there... Precision strikes for long-distance targets during the night required special efforts... We beat Pakistan decisively in every escalation during Operation Sindoor," Gen Chauhan asserted.
The first strikes took place between 1-1.30 am on May 7 on nine identified terrorist targets to prevent civilian casualties, he said during an interaction with school children on Operation Sindoor at the Raj Bhavan here on Thursday.
Operation Sindoor was launched in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists.
"Earlier, we did the Balakot operation, but we didn't have satellite images or photos... But what we did at 1 am now (Operation Sindoor), despite difficulty in collecting evidence in the darkness of night, was due to twin reasons -- first, we had confidence in our capabilities that we could take imagery, and the second, we wanted to avoid civilian casualties.
"The best (option) would have been the time of 5.30 am or 6 am... But that time of the first Azan or Namaz... many civilian lives would have been lost. We wanted to avoid that completely," Gen Chauhan said.
He said that India was monitoring the neighbouring nation's flying activities for some time and chose the strike on the night of May 7, as the weather was clear with no rain prediction.
Contrary to the general notion that the army was engaged at seven targets and the air force at two, the "navy was also involved in the strikes with S400 and S120, and deployment of navy commandos in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab in addition to the Arabian Sea", he said.
"During Uri and Balakot, we chose land and air medium, but in this operation, a surprise element was there as we adopted a new strategy, which was needed for success, and used drones, the capability of which we acquired," Gen Chauhan said.
He said the evolving character of warfare is now driven more by technology than the sheer number or territorial occupation.
"Modern warfare demands that we fight today's conflicts with tomorrow's technology. The battlespace is no longer limited to traditional domains of land, air, and sea and has expanded to include space, cyber, the electromagnetic spectrum, and even the cognitive domain. In recent operations, this shift was evident.
"India was able to strike deep into enemy territory with long-range precision weapons, guided by satellite imagery, electronic surveillance, and signal intelligence, often without direct visual contact with the adversary. These were non-contact, multi-domain operations where success was not measured by the ground captured, but by the level of dominance and sophistication displayed across all levels of escalation," he emphasised.
Giving an example of the strike on Sarjal village in Pakistan's Punjab, he said that though it appeared to be an unremarkable location comprising merely an old primary health centre, technical intelligence confirmed it had been a base for repeated terrorist infiltrations.
The precision strike neutralised a key node in the adversary's network, reflecting the effectiveness of a technology-led approach, the chief of defence staff said.
This paradigm shift in warfare requires rethinking traditional metrics of victory. Success is no longer solely defined by body counts or territorial gains, he said.
Instead, it is measured through strategic deterrence, operational sophistication and information dominance.
The army, navy, and air force have learnt many lessons from Operation Sindoor to ensure higher levels of preparedness and integration, Gen Chauhan said.
"As warfare continues to evolve, our armed forces are not just adapting; they are actively shaping the future battlespace. Victory today lies not only in decisive action, but in the ability to maintain superiority across all domains," he said.
He also noted that 'fauj' (military) is the only place where there is no nepotism.
"Merit is rewarded, and there is recognition of work. You (children) should aspire to join the armed forces if you want to serve the nation, and explore the country and the world," Gen Chauhan said.
He added that the armed forces made maximum efforts this year to rescue citizens amid a high number of natural calamities.&nbsp;

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that he brokered a ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
India maintains that it does not want any third-party involvement in its discussions with Pakistan on issues such as terrorism, as New Delhi believes they must remain bilateral.
In his interview, Dar stressed that Pakistan remained committed to eliminating terrorism from its soil and had made the highest sacrifices in this fight. "It is surprising that the country most affected by terrorism is still blamed by India," he said.
On water issues, Dar cautioned that future wars would be fought over water and reminded that under the Indus Waters Treaty, India could not unilaterally suspend or revoke water distribution.
"Pakistan has made it clear that any attempt to stop water will be considered a declaration of war," he warned.
A day after the Pahalgam terror attack, India took a series of punitive measures against Pakistan that included putting the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 in "abeyance".
When asked about Pakistan's nuclear capability, Dar said the country's nuclear force is purely defensive, has never been used, and there is no intent to use it; but if Pakistan's sovereignty is attacked, it will defend itself at all costs, regardless of which country is involved.
Dar also said that Kashmir is an internationally acknowledged dispute with UN resolutions.
The Express Tribune newspaper reported that Dar also described the recent Israeli strike on Qatar as a grave action against international law, the UN Charter, and the sovereignty of Muslim countries.
"You have seen Lebanon, Syria, Iran and now Qatar attacked. This approach is unacceptable," he said, adding that Qatar was engaged in US and Egyptian-mediated peace talks at the time of the strike and that the attack was intended to sabotage that process.
Referring to a meeting of the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, he said this is not the time for resolutions and statements only; a clear action plan is needed outlining what measures will be taken if Israel does not stop its aggression.
Dar said Pakistan's priority has always been peace, dialogue and diplomacy. However, if dialogue fails and the aggression does not stop, effective practical measures will be necessary, "which could include economic sanctions, legal action, or formation of a regional security force."

Trump&rsquo;s latest comments came on Tuesday during a cabinet meeting at the White House, where he also claimed that he had spoken with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
&ldquo;I am talking to a very terrific man, Narendra Modi. I said, &lsquo;What&rsquo;s going on with you and Pakistan?' The hatred was tremendous. This has been going on for a hell of a long time, like, sometimes with different names for hundreds of years,&rdquo; the US president said.

Trump&rsquo;s comments came just hours before new tariffs totalling 50 per cent on Indian goods were set to take effect on August 27.
Talking to the press at the White House on Monday, Trump had claimed that he stopped seven wars around the world, including the one between India and Pakistan. He added that of the seven wars he stopped, four were because he used tariffs and trade to negotiate with the parties involved in the conflict.
Since May 10, when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a &ldquo;full and immediate&rdquo; ceasefire after a &ldquo;long night&rdquo; of talks mediated by Washington, he has repeated his claim over 40 times that he &ldquo;helped settle&rdquo; the tensions between India and Pakistan.
