OpenAI announced plans to open its first India office in New Delhi, reflecting the country&rsquo;s rapid AI adoption.

OpenAI on Friday said it will set up its first India office in New Delhi later this year, underlining the swift uptake of its AI tools in a market that is ChatGPT's second-largest after the US and among its fastest-growing.
OpenAI said it has officially established an entity in India and has begun hiring a dedicated local team.
Opening an office in India reflects OpenAI's support for IndiaAI mission and commitment to partnering with the government to build AI for India, with India, it said in a statement.
The move will also enable OpenAI to better serve its users in India, including millions of students, educators, professionals, and developers who use its tools to learn, be more creative, and solve problems for themselves and others.
This expansion, it said, underscores India's global leadership in AI, its thriving ecosystem, and the growing demand for OpenAI's advanced tools among people, developers, and businesses across the country.
Data cited by OpenAI highlighted India as a leading country for AI adoption.
Weekly active users of ChatGPT in India increased more than four times in just the past year. The country also ranks among the top five developer markets globally on the OpenAI platform.
India also has the largest population of students on ChatGPT worldwide.
"The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all ingredients to become a global AI leader, amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said.
He added, "Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India." The local team will also focus on strengthening relationships with local partners, governments, businesses, developers, and academic institutions.
"Through this local presence, OpenAI is committed to listening closely to users, customers, and partners across India, and to building features and tools specifically for India, designed to make advanced AI more affordable and accessible to people throughout the entire country," the company said.
Today's news follows recent announcements of initiatives developed for the India market, including ChatGPT Go, OpenAI Academy, enhanced Indic language support, among others.
"OpenAI's decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country's growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. With strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation," Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, said.
As part of the IndiaAI Mission, the country is building an ecosystem for trusted and inclusive AI, the minister said, adding, "We welcome OpenAI's partnership in advancing this vision to ensure the benefits of AI reach every citizen." Local businesses and institutions across India are already using OpenAI's tools to tackle critical challenges, such as AI-powered agricultural services, streamlined recruitment, and effective governance tools, the company said.
Looking ahead, OpenAI will host its first Education Summit in India this month. Later this year, OpenAI will host its first Developer Day in India, bringing together the country's community of developers, startups, and enterprises shaping the future of AI.

US tech giant OpenAI on Monday unveiled a ChatGPT tool called "deep research" ahead of high-level meetings in Tokyo, as China's DeepSeek chatbot heats up competition in the AI field.
Artificial intelligence newcomer DeepSeek has sent Silicon Valley into a frenzy, with some calling its high performance and supposed low cost a wake-up call for US developers.
OpenAI, whose ChatGPT fronted generative AI's emergence into public consciousness in 2022, said its new tool "accomplishes in tens of minutes what would take a human many hours".
"You give it a prompt, and ChatGPT will find, analyze, and synthesize hundreds of online sources to create a comprehensive report at the level of a research analyst," the company said in a statement.
In a livestreamed video, OpenAI researchers showed how the tool can crunch web search data to help recommend ski equipment for a snow holiday in Japan.
OpenAI chief Sam Altman said that deep research, which paid "Pro" ChatGPT users can access 100 times a month, is "compute-intensive and slow".
"But it's the first AI system that can do such a wide variety of complex, valuable tasks," he wrote on social media platform X.
Altman is in Tokyo to meet Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba later Monday along with Masayoshi Son, head of Japanese tech investment behemoth SoftBank Group.
 - 'New kind of hardware' -
Altman and Son will also hold a forum on Monday in Tokyo with around 500 businesses at which they are expected to announce plans to boost Japan's AI infrastructure.
The Nikkei business daily reported that this will include building AI data centres and power plants to run them, without specifying the scale of the investment.
SoftBank and OpenAI are part of the Stargate drive announced by US President Donald Trump to invest up to $500 billion in artificial intelligence infrastructure in the United States.
Ishiba is expected to visit Washington to meet Trump for the leaders' first in-person meeting later this week.
Separately, Altman told the Nikkei he wants to develop "a new kind of hardware" using artificial intelligence in partnership with Apple's former chief design officer Jony Ive.
But Altman indicated that it would take several years to unveil a prototype, the Nikkei said.
Altman also told the newspaper that DeepSeek is "a good model" that highlights the serious competition for AI reasoning technology, but that its "capability level isn't new".
DeepSeek's performance has sparked a wave of accusations that it has reverse-engineered the capabilities of leading US technology, such as the AI powering ChatGPT.
Last week OpenAI warned that Chinese companies are actively attempting to replicate its advanced AI models, prompting closer cooperation with US authorities.
Some X users compared DeepSeek's so-called "thinking mode" and the time taken for deep research to compile its reports, as well as the similar names.
While OpenAI has not released details of Altman's next movements, media reports said he was expected to travel on Tuesday to Seoul, where he will meet the head of IT conglomerate Kakao.

Ahead of general elections, US-based artificial intelligence research organization OpenAI has said it will not allow its AI to be used for political campaigning and continue to work to prevent misleading 'deepfakes' and chatbots impersonating candidates.
In a blog post, Sam Altman-led firm said it has made a number of policy changes to prevent its generative AI-based technologies such as ChatGPT, Dall-e and the rest from undermining the 'democratic process' during upcoming elections.
"As we prepare for elections in 2024 across the world's largest democracies, our approach is to continue our platform safety work by elevating accurate voting information, enforcing measured policies, and improving transparency," it said.
Besides India, the US and UK will also go to the polls this year.
"Protecting the integrity of elections requires collaboration from every corner of the democratic process, and we want to make sure our technology is not used in a way that could undermine this process," OpenAI said. "We want to make sure that our AI systems are built, deployed, and used safely." Listing out measures it is taking to prevent abuse, OpenAI said it is working to "anticipate and prevent relevant abuse - such as misleading 'deepfakes', scaled influence operations, or chatbots impersonating candidates".
"Prior to releasing new systems, we red team them, engage users and external partners for feedback, and build safety mitigations to reduce the potential for harm," it said, adding it has been iterating on tools to improve factual accuracy, reduce bias, and decline certain requests.
For instance, Dall-e has guardrails to decline requests that ask for image generation of real people, including candidates.
Stating that it was still working to understand how effective its tools might be for personalized persuasion, OpenAI said, "Until we know more, we don't allow people to build applications for political campaigning and lobbying." "People want to know and trust that they are interacting with a real person, business, or government. For that reason, we don't allow builders to create chatbots that pretend to be real people (e.g., candidates) or institutions (e.g., local government)," it said.
Also, it does not allow applications that deter people from participation in democratic processes.
"Better transparency around image provenance - including the ability to detect which tools were used to produce an image - can empower voters to assess an image with trust and confidence in how it was made," it said.
OpenAI said it is experimenting with a provenance classifier, a new tool for detecting images generated by Dall-e. "Our internal testing has shown promising early results, even where images have been subject to common types of modifications. We plan to soon make it available to our first group of testers including journalists, platforms, and researchers&mdash;for feedback."
