Top-quality onions, which constitute a small portion of the total traded volume, have exceeded 30 rupees per kg in many wholesale markets across the state. The recent price hike is primarily due to the imbalance between demand and supply.
Onions arriving in markets from June onwards come from stocks held by farmers and traders. Farmers are reluctant to sell their stock, expecting prices to rise with a potential decline in the rabi crop of 2023-24.

India is expected to face a major shortage in onion supply until it harvests the next kharif crop, reported The Economic Times quoting Industry experts. The report further added that this may reverse the current scenerio of excessive supply of onion and stable prices amid an export ban.
<h3>Harvest Drop</h3>
The report quoted industry experts and warned of a 30% drop in rabi harvest, potentially leading to a spike in onion prices around Ramadan in early March. The drop in harvest is attributed to the deficient rainfall experienced by Maharashtra, Karnataka, and several other states in peninsular India.
Onion exporters have cautioned the government about the consequences of allowing onion exports without adhering to a proper mechanism to control export volumes in a letter to the Union government.

As per The Economic Times, the exporters, who met government officials on Monday, claimed that exports of reportedly 300,000 tonnes of onions will result in prices soaring to Rs 35-40/kg at markets in Nashik district and to Rs 50-60/kg in other retail markets.
"We expect the onion prices and demand to increase considerably from the beginning of March due to increased demand of the Ramadan festival on one side and reduced arrivals of kharif crop and some gap in the rabi arrivals," the exporters told the publication, adding, "This year the rabi crop is considerably lower in Maharashtra as well as Madhya Pradesh. The kharif crop is in the last stage and arrivals will reduce in the next 15 days. The rabi crop, expected to arrive to the markets after mid-March, is not in excess and is likely to be less than last year."
<h3>Onion Export</h3>
Onion export were banned between December 2023 till March 2024 to control rising domestic prices and potential shortages.
However, the export ban had led to a crash in onion prices, causing widespread farmers' protests in Maharashtra, the top producer of onions in the country.&nbsp;
The Economic Times quoting onion exporters mentioned that here is a tremendous shortage of onions in the global market and India is the only source of fresh onions. International prices range between $1000-1400 per tonne, while Indian onions are available at $350 per tonne.
Meanwhile, the average wholesale rates of onion at Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Market Committee zoomed by 40% on Monday. Average price of onions per quintal rose from Rs 1,280 to Rs 1,800 on Monday with minimum and maximum prices being recorded at Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,100 per quintal respectively
Along with Onion, Tur output is also expected to fall by about 13% over the previous year. By this, the Tur prices is likely to be expensive for the entire year till the next harvest arrives.

This decision comes after an in-depth analysis of areas experiencing significant price hikes and aims to stabilize the market during the festive season.
Officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed to Moneycontrol, that the government plans to release one lakh tonnes of onions in retail markets throughout November, focusing on areas where price surges have been most notable. While the government had previously intervened in both wholesale and retail markets, the recent strategy of infusing buffer stocks into retail markets has proven to be more effective, leading to a noticeable decline in prices in several cities such as Indore, Bhopal, Raipur, Ranchi, Jaipur, Kota, Lucknow, and Varanasi.
Earlier interventions, including the imposition of a minimum export price (MEP) of $800 per tonne on October 28 and export duties of 40% imposed in August, have contributed to increasing domestic supplies and subsequently reducing prices. Despite these efforts, the retail price of onions in the national capital remained high at ₹77 per kg, prompting the government to step up its efforts.
The government remains committed to preventing onion prices from reaching alarming levels and has taken steps to strengthen its buffer stock. Initially planning to maintain a buffer of three lakh tonnes for the year 2023-24, the government increased it to five lakh tonnes after prices surged in August. In a recent statement, officials announced a further strengthening of the stock, raising the buffer to seven lakh tonnes, indicating the government's determination to keep onion prices under control.

This decision is already making an impact in Maharashtra, a significant onion-producing state in India. Prices in the region have decreased by 5% to 9% from their recent peak levels. Onion auctions at all APMCs in Maharashtra's Nashik district, closed for three days now, will resume from Thursday as traders protesting the imposition of 40 per cent export duty on the key kitchen staple have decided to withdraw the agitation, a traders' representative here said on Wednesday.
The decision was taken in a meeting of the representatives of traders-exporters and farmers with Union minister Dr Bharati Pawar here on Wednesday.
After the meeting, Pawar also said a representative of the traders in Nashik informed in the meeting that they are withdrawing the decision of closure of onion auctions at the Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs) and the operations there will start tomorrow.
"About the 40 per cent export duty, we will request the Union government to rethink and take a positive decision on the issue," she said.
Pawar, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, is the member of Parliament from Dindori in Nashik.
Onion auctions at most of the APMCs in Nashik, including the Lasalgaon APMC which is known as Asia's biggest wholesale onion market, have been closed as traders are against the hike in the export duty on the kitchen staple.
Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday alleged that some "political opponents" are creating a "wrong picture" about the export duty slapped on onion, and urged farmers not to worry as the Centre has restarted procurement at Rs 2,410 per quintal for its buffer stock.
Goyal said the decision to impose 40 per cent export duty on onion has been taken to protect the consumers' interest, but at the same time the Centre has also decided to purchase additional 2 lakh tonnes of onion from farmers to avoid any panic selling.
After the meeting here on Wednesday, Nashik District Onion Traders Association president Khandu Deore said, "Our reasonable demand is that the Union government should think about traders while imposing any duty on onions. Traders do not create obstacles for farmers. Dr Pawar has given an assurance of giving a thought to the demand of traders." "As a result, we are withdrawing our agitation and starting onion auctions at APMCs in Nashik district from tomorrow," he said.
Pawar said, "In a meeting at the district collectorate today, Deore informed that the traders are withdrawing the decision of closure of onion auctions at the APMCs and the operations there will start tomorrow." The decision has been taken considering the welfare of farmers, she said.
"Along with the APMCs, the purchase of onions by National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) will continue. Farmers will have to take a decision to sell onions as per their wish and where they get a good price," the minister said.
Farmers' welfare is the ultimate goal of the Union and state governments,&rdquo; Pawar said.
Traders have also performed well and their contribution to the export of onions is good, she noted.
Union minister Piyush Goyal has given instructions to the collector to give a detailed information about the containers of traders stranded at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (Raigad) and other places, she said.
"The government will take a decision about it and provide help for sure. About the 40 per cent export duty, we will request the Union government to rethink and take a positive decision on the issue,&rdquo; Pawar said.
She also appealed to Deore to start the auction of onions at places where it is possible on Wednesday itself.
District Collector Jalaj Sharma, Chandwad MLA Rahul Aher and NAFED officials attended the meeting.
At almost all APMCs in the district including Lasalgaon, onion auctions remained closed on Wednesday, but auctions were held at the Vinchur sub-committee of Lasalgaon APMC.
The agitation against the government's decision of 40 per cent export duty on onions continued in the district on Wednesday. Activists of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) staged a 'rasta roko' agitation near Shinde toll plaza on Nashik-Pune national highway.
The agitators shouted slogans against the Union government and threw onions on the road.
They demanded roll back of the hike in export duty on onions as well as Rs 4,000 Minimum Support Price (MSP) for the key kitchen staple.
The agitators also demanded that the import of tomatoes be stopped, farmers' electricity bills be waived and drought be declared in Nashik district.

The government, in a press release issued on Sunday, announced plans to gradually expand the retail distribution of these subsidized onions. Not only will major markets be included, but the government also intends to leverage e-commerce platforms and other agencies for wider distribution.
Effective from today, August 21st, 2023, these subsidized onions will be made available through various channels, including retail outlets and mobile vans operated by NCCF.
In an unexpected move, the government has taken steps to bolster the onion buffer stock, raising it to an impressive 5 lakh metric tonnes this year. This decision comes on the heels of successfully achieving the initial procurement target of 3 lakh metric tonnes.
The Department of Consumer Affairs, following this announcement, has mandated NCCF and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) to procure 1.00 lakh tonnes each. This directive is aimed at meeting the extended procurement target, accompanied by a strategic disposal of the procured stocks in key consumption centers.
The press release also highlighted the ongoing process of disposing of the buffer stock. These efforts are concentrated on regions where retail prices exceed the national average or have shown significant increases compared to the previous month. As of now, roughly 1,400 MT of onions from the buffer stock have already been dispatched to these targeted markets.
The government's comprehensive approach to the onion situation involves multifaceted strategies, including buffer stock procurement, stock release plans, and the imposition of export duties. These measures are anticipated to not only benefit farmers but also provide respite to consumers by ensuring a consistent supply of onions at reasonable prices.

Protesting farmers and tribals, who were on their way to Mumbai from Nashik district of Maharashtra, called off their long march on Saturday with their demands being taken into consideration in the state legislature and ground-level officials receiving orders to execute the government's orders, a CPI(M) MLA said. The march had started from Dindori town, located around 195 km away from Mumbai, on March 12 demanding relief of Rs 600 per quintal to onion growers hit by price crash, 12-hour uninterrupted power supply to farmers, and waiver of farm loans. They had reached Thane district's Vasind town, around 80 km from Mumbai.

He said the participants have started heading back to their homes, and the remaining people will leave by Saturday evening or Sunday.
