A day after an ICMR epidemiologist suggested that Omicron is a mild infection and everyone will get it, the Centre on Wednesday warned against treating the infection due to the Omicron variant as common cold and urged people to get vaccinated.
NITI Aayog Member V K Paul said the pandemic has again become intense, this time powered by the Omicron variant "which is rapidly replacing or has already replaced" Delta as the dominant form.
"Omicron is not the common cold and we cannot take it lightly just because it is causing mild infections. This variant has led to the collapse of the health system of some countries. Health workers at some places had to take leave leading to increased pressure." Stressing that vaccination is an important pillar in the Covid response programme, Dr Paul said, "We need to be vigilant, get vaccinated and follow Covid-appropriate behaviour. It is society's responsibility to slow the spread".
Dr. Jaiprakash Muliyil of the Indian Council of Medical Research told NDTV on Tuesday that "a majority of us will not know we have been infected, probably more than 80% will not even know when we have it."
The epidemiologist stressed that booster shots of Covid vaccine will make no difference.

Telangana has registered 20 cases, Karnataka 19, Rajasthan 18, Kerala 15, and Gujarat 14 cases.
Meanwhile, the health ministry data updated on Tuesday showed that India recorded 5,326 new cases of coronavirus infections, the lowest in 581 days. The rise took the total tally of Covid-19 cases to over 3.47 crore, while the active cases declined to just over 79,000, which the lowest in 574 days .
The death toll climbed to 4,78,007 with 453 fresh fatalities, according to the government data. The daily rise in new coronavirus infections has been recorded below 15,000 for the last 54 days now.
The active cases have declined to 79,097 comprising 0.23 per cent of the total infections, the lowest since March 2020, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate has further improved to 98.40 per cent, the highest since March 2020,the ministry said.
A decline of 3,170 cases has been recorded in the active Covid-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.

Early data suggests Omicron could be more infectious and possibly have higher resistance to vaccines. The early research though has suggested that it is not more severe than the Delta variant.
Many countries have returned to harsh restrictions due to the Omicron explosion. But in the United States, President Joe Biden does not plan on "locking the country down," press secretary Jen Psaki said earlier in the day.

Districts with over 5 per cent Covid case positivity rate need to ensure restrictive measures until it is below 5 per cent for at least two weeks, the government said.
It assured that sufficient systematic and strategic sampling is being undertaken for genome sequencing for detection of Omicron cases in India.
On COVID-19 vaccination, the government said that India has so far administered 82.8 crore first doses and 53.72 crore second doses.

Speaking to AFP, President Joe Biden's chief medical adviser broke down the knowns and unknowns about Omicron into three major areas: transmissibility, how well it evades immunity from prior infection and vaccines, and severity of illness.

In a statement, the state health department said, "The 44-year-old, woman, who is a Nigerian citizen of Indian origin, her daughters aged 18 and 12, arrived on November 24 from Lagos in Nigeria to meet her brother in Pimpri Chinchwad area.
"The woman, her two daughters, her 45-year-old brother and his two daughters aged 7 and one-and-a-half years, have tested positive for the Omicron variant as per the report given by the Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV)." Their thirteen contacts had been traced and tested, it said.
The country reported the first two cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 on Thursday in Karnataka -- a 66-year-old South African flyer and a 46-year-old Bengaluru doctor with no travel history. The emergence of Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus has led to a lot of changes in travel guidelines for passengers arriving in India from abroad.
Here are the rules announced by the Indian govt for international arrivals in effect from December 1:
All international passengers will have to submit a travel history of the last 14 days on govt&rsquo;s Air Suvidha portal before the taking the flight to India. The travel history is a part of a self-declaration form.
Passengers travelling to India will also have to upload a negative RT-PCR report. The test should have been conducted within 72 hours prior to the journey.
Airlines will only be allowed to board passengers who have submitted their travel history and a negative RT-PCR test result.
All international passengers will have to undergo thermal screening on arrival at an Indian airport and those who are found symptomatic will be immediately isolated and taken to a medical facility. If they test positive, standard operation procedure like quarantine and tracing and testing of contacts will be followed.
All travellers from &lsquo;at risk&rsquo; countries listed by the govt will have to submit a sample for a Covid-19 test on arrival at the airport. They will have to wait at the airport till the report comes. The cost for these tests will have to be borne by the passengers.
According to the govt list, at risk countries are the European countries, the UK, South Africa, Brazil, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Hong Kong and Israel.
If they test negative, they will have quarantine at home for 7 days and do a re-test on the 8th day.

IIT Kanpur professor Manindra Agrawal has predicted that a mild Covid-19 third wave is likely to peak in India between January and February next year.&nbsp;
In contrast to a South African research study, Agrawal said that Omicron does not seem to be bypassing natural immunity from Covid-19 in any significant way.&nbsp;&nbsp;
He said that there is no need to panic about the new variant but citizens must remain careful.&nbsp;
Agrawal also&nbsp;said that the Omicron variant is not leading to critical cases but only mild infection. The data gathered so far suggests that the variant has only mild symptoms, even as its transmissibility appears to be high.&nbsp;
Recommending the&nbsp;mild lockdown&nbsp;including night curfew, restrictions on crowding to&nbsp;control the spread of the virus and reduce the peak value, he said that&nbsp;the third&nbsp;wave in the country is nearly certain; however, how bad it will get will depend on how the government tackles it.&nbsp;&nbsp;
