Several railway unions have threatened to stop all train services across the country from May 1 if their demand to implement the old pension scheme is not fulfilled.

Several unions of railway employees and workers, who have come together under the Joint Forum For Restoration of Old Pension Scheme (JFROPS), have threatened to stop all train services across the country from May 1 if their demand to implement the Old Pension Scheme is not met.
&ldquo;The government is completely non-committal to our demand for the restoration of &lsquo;Defined Guarantied Old Pension Scheme' in place of &lsquo;New Pension Scheme&rsquo;. Now, there is no alternative left but to resort to direct action,&rdquo; Shiv Gopal Mishra, Convener of JFROPS, said.
Mishra, who is also General Secretary of All India Railwaymen's Federation, added, &ldquo;Representatives of various federations under JFROPS have jointly consented that we will officially serve a notice to the Railway Ministry on March 19, informing them about the proposed countrywide strike and disruption of all train services from May 1, 2024 i.e. on International Labour Day.&rdquo; According to Mishra, several unions of other government employees, who are also part of JFROPS, will also go on strike along with railway workers.
A press note issued by JFROPS said, &ldquo;All the constituent organisations are therefore requested to take appropriate action and to make all sorts of preparations for serving upon the strike notice to their respective Administrations in a befitting manner.&rdquo; Mishra said that while the OPS was in the interest of workers, the New Pension Scheme doesn&rsquo;t take care of their employees' welfare.

Lakhs of government employees in Maharashtra have gone on strike demanding the restoration of the old pension scheme.&nbsp; From sanitation workers to teachers, paramedics and other govt staff, have all joined the strike for the implementation of the old pension scheme, which comes at a time when board examinations for Classes 10 and 12 are underway.
Under Old Pension Scheme (OPS), the pension amount is provided by the government, which increases its liability, whereas the New Pension Scheme has a contributory mechanism from the employee as well as the government.&nbsp;
It's been almost 20 years since the central government introduced the New pension scheme, in which the beneficiaries will be able to withdraw 60% of the amount invested after retirement.&nbsp; What is Old Pension Scheme? Old Pension Scheme (OPS) is a retirement scheme approved by the central government which provides a monthly pension to the beneficiaries till the end of their life service. Under this, the amount of monthly pension is equal to half of the last salary drawn by an individual.
Employees raised slogans like "Only one mission, restore old pension" outside government offices and hospitals.
Some non-BJP-ruled states including Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh have already reverted to OPS and ditched the new pension scheme (NPS).

Police took action when the demonstrators, who had gathered on the Panchkula-Chandigarh border, tried to cross over into the Union Territory and march towards the Haryana chief minister's residence and 'gherao' it to press for their demand.

The Haryana Police on Sunday used water cannons and tear gas shells to disperse a large group of state government employees holding a demonstration in Panchkula for the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme.
Police took action when the demonstrators, who had gathered on the Panchkula-Chandigarh border, tried to cross over into the Union Territory and march towards the Haryana chief minister's residence and 'gherao' it to press for their demand.
There was heavy police deployment at the site on the border, police said.
The demonstrators had gathered under the banner of the 'Old Pension Scheme (OPS) Restoration Struggle Committee' and a representative of the panel, while speaking to reporters in Panchkula, claimed that a few employees had suffered injuries during the police action.
"Restoration of OPS is a legitimate demand. Governments of Rajasthan, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh have restored it. The Haryana government has given an excuse that the government will go bankrupt if OPS is restored, which is not correct," the committee's representative said.
He said that an employee gives 25 to 30 years of service to a department. "Politicians have in the past also been getting pensions for multiple terms, so what are we demanding...," he said.
