The Howrah-bound Coromandel Express crashed into a stationary goods train, derailing most of its coaches on June 2.

At least seven railway employees, including three employees arrested by the CBI, were suspended on the charge of dereliction of duty leading to the triple train crash in Odisha, a top official said.
As many as 293 people were killed and over 1,200 injured in the triple train collision near Bahanaga Bazar railway station in Balasore district on June 2.
South Eastern Railway&rsquo;s General Manager Anil Kumar Mishra, told reporters, &ldquo;Had the officials been alert, the accident could have been avoided.&rdquo; "The railways have so far suspended seven employees, including three who were arrested by the CBI. According to norms, an employee arrested for 24 hours stands suspended,&rdquo; Mishra told reporters after visiting the accident site.
Earlier, the CBI had arrested senior Section Engineer (signal) Arun Kumar Mahanta, Section Engineer Mohammed Amir Khan and Technician Pappu Kumar.
They have been taken on another four-day remand by the CBI from Wednesday.

The CBI has arrested three railway employees in connection with the train accident in Odisha's Balasore in June.
They have been identified as senior section engineer Arun Kumar Mahanta, section engineer Mohammad Amir Khan and technician Pappu Kumar.&nbsp;
The three have been arrested under IPC sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence).
The accident took place near the Bahanaga Bazar station in the Balasore district of Odisha in which 293 people were killed -- 287 on the spot or brought dead to the hospital while six succumbed to injuries in hospitals.
The accident involved three trains: the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and a stationary goods train.&nbsp;

Investigators were on Saturday looking into any human error, signal failure and other possible causes behind the three-train crash in Odisha's Balasore district as officials submitted a preliminary inquiry report into the worst rail accident in India in nearly three decades that left at least 288 people dead and over 1,100 injured.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that a signal was given to Coromandel Express to enter the main line but it was taken off and the train entered the loop line and crashed into a goods train parked there.
The crash involving Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, which were carrying around 2,500 passengers, and a goods train occurred around 7 PM on Friday near the Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore, about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar.
Twenty-one coaches were derailed and severely damaged in the accident, trapping hundreds of passengers. Both passenger trains were at a high speed and it has been cited by experts as one of the main reasons for the high number of casualties.
From a vantage point high above the ground, the disaster site looked as if a powerful whirlwind had thrown the coaches like toys on top of each other. Closer to the ground, bloodied, disfigured bodies and dismembered body parts lay enmeshed, creating a grotesque sight.
Large cranes were deployed to move the wreckage and gas cutters were used to extricate the bodies from the mangled, toppled coaches.
The rescue operation was wrapped up Saturday afternoon and restoration work started. With traffic on the route disrupted, over 150 trains were cancelled, diverted or short-terminated.

The Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express entered a wrong track and hit a stationary goods train on Friday. Its coaches got scattered all around including on an adjoining track and another passenger train -- Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express -- coming at a high speed rammed into them and derailed.
The worst rail accident in India in nearly three decades has left at least 288 people dead and over 1,100 injured.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) jawan Venkatesh NK was on leave and travelling from Howrah in West Bengal to Tamil Nadu. He had a narrow escape as his coach B-7, though derailed did not collide with coaches ahead of it, the officials said. He was in a third AC coach and his seat number was 58.
The 39-year-old, posted with the NDRF's 2nd battalion in Kolkata, first called his senior inspector in the battalion to inform him about the accident. He then sent the "live location" of the site on WhatsApp to the NDRF control room, and this was used by the first rescue teams to reach the spot, they said.
"I felt a massive jolt...and then I saw some passengers in my coach falling down. I brought the first passenger out and seated him in a shop near the railway track...I then rushed to help others," Venkatesh told PTI from on board a relief train that is taking him to Chennai.
He said locals, including a medical shop owner, were the "real saviours" as they helped the victims with whatever was available with them.
The crash involving the two passenger trains, which were carrying around 2,300 passengers, occurred near the Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore, about 170 km north of Bhubaneswar.
"The jawan Venkatesh was travelling in the Coromandel Express as he was going on leave to his home in Tamil Nadu. He rang up his seniors in Kolkata as soon as the accident took place. That phone call was probably the first that alerted the NDRF which subsequently informed the local administration too," an official said.
The jawan, who joined the NDRF in 2021 from the Border Security Force (BSF), said he used his mobile phone light to locate hurt and trapped passengers, and took them to safety. It was pitch dark and locals too used their mobile phones and torches to help passengers till rescue teams arrived.
NDRF DIG Mohsen Shahedi in Delhi said that "an NDRF jawan is always on duty whether donning a uniform or not." The first NDRF and Odisha state rescue teams took about an hour to reach the site following the accident that took place around 7 pm on Friday, and till this time, the NDRF rescuer did whatever he could do to save lives in the "golden hour", the official said.
The "golden hour" is the period of time immediately after a traumatic injury during which there is the highest likelihood that prompt medical and surgical treatment will prevent death.

'After Balasore station, the train jolted and we saw smoke filling the coach. We couldn't see anyone. The train overturned but the locals pulled me out after 45 mins to 1 hour. I was very scared,' Subroto Pal said.&nbsp;
'We couldn't find anyone, didn't know where my son was initially. We thought we wouldn't survive. We have come back home safely, we will think of it as a second birth. As long as we are alive the scenes will remain etched in our minds,' his wife Deboshree said.&nbsp;

Modi spoke to the press after inspecting the site of one of the country&rsquo;s worst train disasters at Bahanaga in Odisha&rsquo;s Balasore district and meeting victims at Balasore Hospital.
"Stringent action will be taken against those found guilty in the train accident incident. No one will be spared," Modi said.
Prime Minister also promised, "We will give the best possible treatment to those injured in this tragedy".
He also expressed his gratitude to locals for all the help in rescuing people, many of whom worked through the night.
"I am grateful to local people for all help given to train accident victims," Modi said.
Speaking of the accident he said, "I do not have words to express the pain. Let Almighty give us strength to overcome this situation".
