<p>The third session of the seventeenth Odisha Assembly is set to begin on February 13, with Speaker Surama Padhy issuing a stern warning against disruptions during the upcoming Budget Session. She urged the Opposition to focus on constructive discussions, cautioning that disorderly behavior would lead to action.</p>
<p>The Speaker&rsquo;s statement drew sharp criticism from Opposition leaders. Deputy Chief Whip Pratap Deb called her remarks &ldquo;ridiculous,&rdquo; asserting that it is the Speaker&rsquo;s responsibility to manage the house. Opposition leader Pramila Malik accused the Speaker of attempting to stifle dissent, stating, &ldquo;Showing red eyes will not silence the Opposition&rsquo;s voice.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The session will commence with the Governor&rsquo;s address on the first day, followed by discussions on February 14 and 15. The Budget is scheduled to be presented on February 17, and the standing committee report will be tabled on March 7. The assembly will have 28 working days in total.<br>&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Four-time MLA and tribal leader from Keonjhar district Mohan Charan Majhi was on Wednesday sworn in as the first BJP chief minister of Odisha at a ceremony here attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Union ministers and chief ministers.</p>
<p>Senior BJP leader and Patnagarh MLA KV Singh Deo and debutant from Nimapara assembly segment Pravati Parida took oath as deputy chief ministers.</p>
<p>Governor Raghubar Das administered the oath of secrecy and office to 52-year-old Majhi, who hails from the Santhal community, and other members of his council of ministers at Janata Maidan here.</p>
<p>This is the first time that a BJP government has been formed in the eastern state after defeating the 24-year-old Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government headed by Naveen Patnaik.</p>
<p>In a post on X, Modi said, "It&rsquo;s a historic day in Odisha! With the blessings of my sisters and brothers of Odisha, @BJP4Odisha is forming its first-ever government in the state. I attended the swearing-in ceremony in Bhubaneswar." "Congratulations to Shri Mohan Charan Majhi on taking oath as CM and to Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo as well as Smt. Pravati Parida on taking oath as Deputy CMs. Congratulations also to the others who took oath as Ministers. With the blessings of Mahaprabhu Jagannath, I am confident this team will usher in record development in Odisha and improve the lives of countless people," he added.</p>
<p>Apart from Modi, BJP chief JP Nadda, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Bhupender Yadav, Dharmendra Pradhan, Jual Oram, Ashwini Vaishnaw and others attended the ceremony.</p>
<p>Several chief ministers of BJP-ruled states including Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Uttarakhand were also present. Odisha&rsquo;s former chief minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik also attended the ceremony.</p>
<p>The 16-member council of ministers led by Chief Minister Majhi includes a diverse group with four tribals, including Majhi himself, two Dalits, and one woman.</p>
<p>Majhi&rsquo;s council of ministers includes two deputy chief ministers, eight cabinet ministers, and five ministers of state (independent charge).</p>
<p>Suresh Pujari, Rabinarayan Naik, Nityananda Gond, Krushna Chandra Patra, Prithiviraj Harichandan, Mukesh Mahaling, Bibhuti Bhusan Jena and Krushna Chandra Mohapatra took oath as Cabinet ministers.</p>
<p>Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia, Suryabanshi Suraj, Pradeep Balasananta, Gokula Nanda Mallick and Sampad Kumar Swain were sworn in as ministers of state (independent).</p>
<p>Among the 78 BJP members elected to the Assembly, only five are women. Sources indicated that Surama Padhy, who was elected from Ranpur in Nayagarh district, is expected to become the Speaker of the 17th Odisha Legislative Assembly.</p>
<p>The ministers hail from various regions across the state - four are from the western region, three, including the chief minister, are from the northern region, four from the coastal belt, three from the southern region, and one from central Odisha.</p>
<p>BJP for the first time got a clear mandate in Odisha, ending the 24-year stint of the BJD.</p>
<p>The saffron party stormed to power in Odisha by securing 78 seats in the 147-member Assembly while Patnaik-led BJD got 51 seats, Congress (14), CPI(M) won in one seat while Independents got three.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Asserting that the BJP would not be able to win Odisha in the next 10 years, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday claimed his BJD would return to power for the sixth consecutive time after the assembly elections.</p>
<p>Patnaik was reacting to PM Narendra Modi telling an election rally earlier in the day that the swearing-in ceremony of a "BJP chief minister" will be held in Bhubaneswar on June 10.</p>
<p>"Nothing will happen on June 10. BJP will not be able to win the hearts of the people in the next 10 years, forget about June 10," the chief minister said, maintaining that the BJD will form the government in Odisha for the sixth consecutive time.</p>
<p>He also questioned why Biju Patnaik was not being considered for Bharat Ratna.</p>
<p>"There are so many brave sons of Odisha, a few of whom you spoke about today. Don't any of them, including Biju Patnaik, deserve the Bharat Ratna?" Patnaik asked, noting that the Centre has given the honour to several persons recently.</p>
<p>He said the people of Odisha remember the promises Modi and the BJP made to the people in 2014 and 2019, and they have also seen the BJD government for the last 24 years.</p>
<p>"Do you also remember the promises you made in 2014 and 2019? The people of Odisha remember your promise -- controlling prices of essential commodities, creating 2 crore jobs, reducing prices of LPG, petrol and diesel, and providing mobile connectivity in remote areas," he said.</p>
<p>"You are remembering Odisha only during the elections and this will be of no use," he added.</p>
<p>Patnaik said while Rs 1,000 crore was allotted by the Centre for promoting Sanskrit, no money was given for Odia even when it is a classical language.</p>
<p>"I had sent proposals for recognition to classical Odissi music and you have rejected them twice," he said.</p>
<p>Patnaik claimed the PM has also forgotten the farmers of the state and his promise of doubling the MSP.</p>
<p>"You should have kept the people of Odisha in mind and built the coastal highway. You have again forgotten this project," he said.</p>
<p>Stating that coal is Odisha's natural wealth, Patnaik said, "The PM has also forgotten to revise the royalty for 10 years." In an indirect reference to BJD leader VK Pandian's assertion that he is the natural successor to all great values of Patnaik, Modi said, "I am here to invite you to the swearing-in ceremony of the BJP chief minister in Bhubaneswar on June 10. A son or daughter of the soil who understands the state's culture, language and tradition will be made the CM." Odisha will vote for its 21 Lok Sabha seats and 147-member assembly, simultaneously, in four phases, starting on May 13.</p>
