New York: Nearly 7,000 nurses set to go on a strike over pay dispute

The hospitals have been getting ready for a walkout by transferring patients, diverting ambulances to other institutions, postponing nonemergency medical procedures and arranging to bring in temporary staffing.

Nurses at two of New York City's largest hospitals were poised to go on strike Monday in a dispute over pay and staffing levels after a weekend of negotiations that has yet to produce a deal for a new contract.
The walkout, set to begin at 6 a.m., would involve as many as 3,500 nurses at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx and around 3,600 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan.
The New York State Nurses Association, which represents the workers, said it was being forced into the drastic step because of chronic understaffing that leaves them caring for too many patients.

&ldquo;Nurses don't want to strike. Bosses have pushed us to strike by refusing to seriously consider our proposals to address the desperate crisis of unsafe staffing that harms our patients,&rdquo; the union said in a statement late Sunday.

Nurses across most of Britain will next month hold the first strikes in their union's 106-year history, joining a host of other UK workers taking industrial action over pay.
Staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland -- but not Scotland -- will walk out on December 15 and 20, after the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) union said the government had turned down an offer of negotiations.
It will be the latest industrial action in Britain, where decades-high inflation and a cost-of-living crisis has prompted staff in various sectors to demand pay rises to keep up with spiralling prices.
The nurses' strike will be sandwiched between the first of a series of two-day walkouts by national railway workers, while postal service employees will stage fresh stoppages in the run-up to Christmas.

Numerous other public and private sector staff, from lawyers to airport ground personnel, have also held strikes this year.
"Nursing staff have had enough of being taken for granted, enough of low pay and unsafe staffing levels, enough of not being able to give our patients the care they deserve," said RCN head Pat Cullen.
The union, which wants a pay rise significantly above inflation, announced earlier this month that a ballot of its more than 300,000 members had found a majority in favour of strikes.
"Ministers have had more than two weeks since we confirmed that our members felt such injustice that they would strike for the first time," Cullen said, adding that an offer of formal negotiations was declined.
"They have the power and the means to stop this by opening serious talks that address our dispute."
The RCN will next week announce which particular arms of Britain's sprawling state-funded National Health Service (NHS) will be affected by the walkouts.

Social media users claimed that on Page 122, the book spoke about the "merits of dowry". One of the most questionable passages said, "Ugly looking girls can be married off with attractive dowry with well or ugly looking boys." Among the other "merits", were claims that dowry is helpful in "establishing new households", the "girl receives a share of the parental property", and parents educating girls because of the burden of dowry.
Reacting to the viral news, the Indian Nursing Council said, "It has been brought to the notice of the Indian Nursing Council that some authors of Sociology for Nurses are quoting INC syllabus to publish substandard content in textbooks. INC strongly condemns any derogatory content which is against the prevailing law of the land. It is clarified that INC only prescribes syllabus for various nursing programmes which is placed on its website." The INC also clarified that it does not endorse any author or publication.

A Delhi government hospital on Saturday issued a circular asking its nursing staff not to use Malayalam at work as "maximum patients and colleagues do not know the language".
The circular issued by the Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research has asked its nurses to use only Hindi and English for communication or face "strict action".
G B Pant nurses&rsquo; association while disagreeing with the order said that it was issued after a complaint by a patient regarding the use of Malayalam at the hospital.
The nurses body also added that since only Malayalam has been mentioned in the circular, many will take offence.
COngress MP from Kerala Shashi Tharoor termed the order "unacceptable, crude, offensive and a violation of the basic human rights of Indian citizens".

Delhi's GB&nbsp;Pant hospital on Sunday withdrew its controversial order of directing its nursing staff "to use only Hindi and English for communication".
The hospital earlier sparked a row when it issued a circular asking its nursing staff not to use Malayalam at work as "maximum patients and colleagues do not know the language".
The nurses body had objected to the circular asking why was Malayalam being singled out.
The hospital took the decision after Delhi's Health Minister Satyendra Kumar Jain ordered the circular&nbsp;to be immediately withdrawn&nbsp;.
Reportedly, the Delhi government will also issue a memo against the Medical Supervisor (MS), which will be forwarded to&nbsp;the nursing superintendent of the state-owned hospital.
