NTPC says tunnel one km away from town, 1.1 km below ground | Joshimath land sinking

Explaining its project has no role in the subsidence of the Joshimath in Uttarakhand, NTPC has informed the power ministry that the 12-kilometer long tunnel connected to the Tapovan Vishnugad hydroelectric project is 1 kilometers away from the town and at least a kilometer below the ground.&nbsp;
Experts are blaming NTPC project for gradual sinking of land as cracks developed in hundreds of houses and buildings in Joshimath.&nbsp;
On January 10, the Union Power Ministry summoned NTPC officials to review the subsidence incident in Joshimath. A day later, India's largest electricity-generating company wrote to the ministry explaining its position.
Stating that land subsidence in Joshimath is a very old issue with first observance dating back to 1976, NTPC citing a state government-appointed M C Mishra Committee of that year blaming "hill wash, natural angle of repose, cultivation area because of seepage and soil erosion" for the subsidence/cracks.

While, NTPC had claimed that the tunnel for their hydel project is not passing under Joshimath, Jha in a Twitter post said the Joshimath disaster is the result of aquifer breaches.&nbsp;

As residents face crisis due to gradual sinking of Joshimath in Uttarakhand, environment expert Vimlendu Jha said blamed NTPC engineers for 'bringing down' the town, adding there is no scope of repair and no reverse gear from the present situation.
While, NTPC had claimed that the tunnel for their hydel project is not passing under Joshimath, Jha in a Twitter post said the Joshimath disaster is the result of aquifer breaches.&nbsp;
Pointing towards the varity of soils, Jha further said not every soil is fit for digging, blasting or moving. Joshimath disaster is the result of puncturing of aquifers by the NTPC engineers, by their tunnel-boring machines, through tunneling under Joshimath, muddy waters seeping out from homes and ground is a testimony of the engineered crime leading to aquifer breaches.&nbsp;

Coal shortage: The daily average coal requirement at the power plants is about 18.5 Lakh tonnes of coal per day whereas the daily coal supply has been around 17.5 lakh tonnes per day.

Coal shortage: The government has moved into damage control as worries of blackouts and load shedding grab headline. The coal ministry&nbsp; issued a statement assuring that distribution and not the actual availability of coal was the problem that was getting resolved. The ministry stated "any fear of disruption in power supply is entirely misplaced".

As per the statement,"The present coal supply&nbsp;to <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/panic-over-blackouts-unnecessary-power-minister-on-outage-fears-1633860533755" target="_blank">power sector</a> is more than 14 lakh tonnes per day and with the receding rains, this supply has already increased to 15 lakh tonnes and is set to increase to more than 16 lakh tonnes per day by the end of October 2021".&nbsp; As <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/delhi-could-face-power-crisis-kerjiwal-seeks-pm-s-personal-intervention-1633783418849" target="_blank">Delhi Chief Minister Arvind&nbsp;Kejriwal</a>&nbsp;continues to allege that the centre is witholding&nbsp;supply, the Coal Ministry retorted that&nbsp;Delhi will get as much as power as requisitioned by them as per their demand. To meet Delhi's growing demand the Ministry has directed NTPC&nbsp;and GAIL to give full availability. The minister however warned that if any discom is found to resort to load shedding despite being power available, action would be initiated against them.

Sensex, Nifty open flat in morning session

Indian equity markets were almost flat in the opening session on Tuesday following global cues.
At 9:20 am, the Sensex was 27 points in the green at 40,172 and the Nifty was trading at 11,781, up 0.12%.
Kotak Mahindra&nbsp;Bank, Divis&nbsp;Lab, Shree&nbsp;Cements, Nestle India and NTPC&nbsp;were the top gainers. Whereas ICICI&nbsp;Bank, Adani&nbsp;Ports, Axis Bank, SBI&nbsp;and IndusInd&nbsp;Bank were the top losers.
