Novak Djokovic was cruising along with a big early lead in his U.S. Open fourth-round match on Sunday night when his neck started bothering him. That didn't stop Djokovic from dominating 144th-ranked qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 to reach his record 64th Grand Slam quarterfinal.
&ldquo;What gives me a lot of encouragement right now, and positivity, is the way I played tonight,&rdquo; Djokovic said. &ldquo;Best performance of the tournament so far. Hopefully I can keep that going.&rdquo; Djokovic was ahead 4-0, 15-love when he hit a nicely angled volley winner to go up 30-love in that game. The 24-time Grand Slam champion immediately grabbed at the back of his neck and started turning his head.
The 38-year-old Djokovic kept trying to stretch his neck or flex his right shoulder between points, and he went on to drop that game and the next one, too. But he soon regained the upper hand against Struff, who beat Frances Tiafoe in the previous round and was trying to get to a major quarterfinal for the first time.
After improving to 8-0 against Struff, Djokovic now carries a 10-0 head-to-head record into his quarterfinal on Tuesday against 2024 U.S. Open runner-up Taylor Fritz.
&ldquo;I expect players that never won against me to come out on the court and try something different and try to make me feel maybe uncomfortable and play more aggressive, or not, whatever,&rdquo; Djokovic said. &ldquo;I don't think there's going to be any major changes with Taylor, because, obviously, you stick to the kind of a game plan that got you to the quarters, and you know what your strengths are ... which for him obviously is serve and forehand.&rdquo; The No. 4-seeded Fritz, the last American man in the bracket, moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 victory Sunday against No. 21 Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic.
&ldquo;The thing is, I think it's spanned over so many years. The first almost seven or eight times I played him, I probably just wasn't a good enough player to really have that much of a chance unless I have the best day ever and he has a bad day,&rdquo; Fritz said. &ldquo;Only the last couple times we've played, I think, I've been this just better player that can, I'd say, compete and have chances.&rdquo; After Djokovic finished off that opening set against Struff, he was visited by a trainer for treatment during the ensuing changeover. Djokovic was given a massage to his neck and shoulder.
If he was still in discomfort, his play wasn't really affected at all. During the break after that set, Djokovic had his right forearm massaged. But again, there were no signs of trouble when the ball was in play.
Djokovic had trainers work on him earlier in the tournament, too, including for blisters on a foot in the first round and for a lower-back issue in the third.
He's won four championships in New York, most recently in 2023.&nbsp;

The 37-year-old Serbian great's upper left leg was again heavily taped after he hurt it in the quarter-finals and he called time after going down 7-6 (7/5).
He left the court to a mixture of boos and applause from the crowd as Germany's Zverev reached his first Melbourne final.
It means Djokovic has now gone five Grand Slams without winning the title he needs to surpass Margaret Court's 24 and become the all-time leader.
He failed to collect one for the first time in seven years in 2024 with his last coming at the 2023 US Open, casting further doubt on whether he will ever get past Court.
The defeat also deprived him of a 100th career title. Roger Federer (102) is the only player, man or woman, to reach the century mark.
Zverev's reward is a clash in Sunday's showdown with either world number one Jannik Sinner or American 21st seed Ben Shelton.
While the German has been a Grand Slam runner-up twice before, at last year's French Open and the 2020 US Open, he has never before been to the final in Melbourne.
Last year at the same semi-final stage he crashed to Daniil Medvedev in five sets after holding a 2-0 lead.
But he came into the season with renewed vigour after ending 2024 as world number two, winning more matches than anyone bar Sinner and back to his best after a horrific ankle injury.
Djokovic came into the clash with questions over his fitness after needing medical attention in his four-set quarter-final win against Carlos Alcaraz.
He said before the match he was worried about his physical condition.
But he has demonstrated remarkable powers of recovery more than once in his career and it didn't appear to hinder him initially.
He moved with his customary zip in an opening service game that featured a 27-shot rally and again in saving four break points as his serve mis-fired.
It was then Zverev's turn to save three break points and keep the match on serve at 2-2, with both players blowing hot and cold.
Another break point went begging for the German at 4-4, with Djokovic barely getting 50 percent of his first serves in.
It went to a tight tiebreak after which Djokovic retired.

It was the 90th win at the U.S. Open for Djokovic, making him the first man to reach that total at all four Grand Slams. The 24-time major champion will play No. 28 seed Alexei Popyrin on Friday.
Djere was the only player to win a set against Djokovic at last year's U.S. Open, grabbing the first two in their third-round encounter before Djokovic rallied.
&ldquo;So I knew coming into the match that if I don't serve well, which was the case, I'm going to have to really grind and work for my points a lot,&rdquo; Djokovic said. &ldquo;That's what I guess caused the two sets to be played over two hours.&rdquo; Djokovic made only 47% of his first serves and appeared to be struggling physically himself earlier in the match, which was just his second since winning the gold medal in the Olympics.
Djere had two chances to break Djokovic's serve for would have given him a 5-2 lead in the second set. Instead, he wouldn't win another game, with Djokovic breaking to win the set when Djere yanked a forehand out of bounds.
&ldquo;All in all, of course, I have to be happy with the win,&rdquo; Djokovic said, &ldquo;and happy that in important moments I managed to play one ball more than him over the net, I guess find the right shots or anticipate well as I did in the set point in the second set.&rdquo;&nbsp;

It was Djokovic's first match since accidentally getting knocked on the head by a water bottle while signing autographs after his opening win on Friday.
Djokovic started off with a double-fault and it didn't get much better for the six-time Rome champion.
Top-ranked Djokovic lost his first two service games and went on to lose the match 6-2, 6-3 in just 68 minutes, handing Tabilo the victory when he double-faulted &ndash; his fifth of the match &ndash; and the boos rang out at the Foro Italico.
The third-round loss marked Djokovic's worst performance at the Italian Open. He had lost only once before to an opponent outside the top 10 at Rome, where he had never gone out before the quarterfinals.
Djokovic followed Nadal with an early exit after the record 10-time Rome champion lost his third round match to Hubert Hurkacz 6-1, 6-3 on Saturday.
After the match, Djoker said, 'Congratulations to my opponent. Its the first time I faced him. Great player, you know, really, quality player all round game. Yeah, I just yeah wasn't able to find any kind of, good feelings on the court, to be honest. You know, with striking the ball and just yeah, I was completely off.'
While Djokovic had said he was &ldquo;fine&rdquo; after the water bottle incident, it was an unusually off-key performance from the 24-time Grand Slam champion as he tries to step up his game on clay before attempting to defend his title at the French Open, which starts on May 26.

Djokovic went to his knees and gripped his head right away. He was ultimately carried off the court after lying in a crouch on the ground for a few seconds while staff members rushed to help him.

&ldquo;I lost to him last year here. Similar circumstances" said Djokovic, who is playing in his first tournament since parting ways with former coach Goran Ivanisevic.
"I was a set and 4-2 up and then I lost the break and I must say it was in the back of my mind when I was serving at 4-2, 40-15. I lost the break of serve and I was like Oh no, hopefully, this is not a similar scenario like last year.' I'm really glad to overcome the challenge.&rdquo; Second-ranked Jannik Sinner also advanced to the quarterfinals with a solid 6-4, 6-2 win over Jan-Lennard Struff.
Djokovic has not played much this year and is 10-3 with his best result a semifinal run at the Australian Open. He is using the Monte Carlo clay-court tournament to fine-tune his preparations for the French Open next month.
Djokovic dropped his serve immediately and struggled to adapt to Musetti's variety of shots. The Italian produced some great drop shots, was solid from the baseline and his one-handed backhands put Djokovic on the back foot.
A turning point came in the eighth game when Djokovic broke after Musetti blew a 40-0 lead. The Serb broke again in the 12th game after Musetti hit a double fault to drop the set.
Both players struggled to hold their serves in the second set but Djokovic came out on top in the decisive points.
&ldquo;This is clay, obviously things can turn around very quickly,&rdquo; Djokovic said.
"A break of serve is not a big advantage on this surface as the other surfaces. We saw a little bit of a roller coaster in the second set. I'm just glad staying tough and aggressive in the right moments paid off.&rdquo; Djokovic won the title in Monte Carlo in 2013 and 2015. He has not advanced past the quarterfinals since his last victory at the Country Club nine years ago.
His next opponent will be Alex de Minaur, who beat Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-4.
Sinner will play against Holger Rune, who defeated Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (9), 3-6, 7-6 (2) in a three-and-a-half-hour match after fending off two match points at 5-6 in the final set.
It was Rune's second match of the day after he first completed a rain-delayed win against Sumit Nagal.
Earlier, Karen Khachanov advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time with a 6-3, 7-5 win over fellow Russian Daniil Medvedev.
Khachanov will next play two-time Monte Carlo champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, who beat Alexander Zverev 7-5, 7-6 (3).
Tsitsipas blew a 5-0 lead in the second set and failed to convert two match points before Zverev won five straight games. The Greek, however, regained his composure in the tiebreaker to improve his record against his German rival to 10-5.
Medvedev won his first clay-court tournament last year in Rome but still does not feel completely at ease on the surface. After his title in Italy, he lost in the first round to a qualifier at the French Open last season.
Khachanov hit 11 winners and limited his mistakes to just three unforced errors in the second set to produce his first win over a top 5 player this season.
&ldquo;First thing is to be consistent. I think lately my results have been better and better,&rdquo; Khachanov said.
&ldquo;Then to think how to beat the top guys and be at the top. These are the things that we have to keep in mind and keep working on. The win today gives extra confidence in my pocket to continue this tournament and to step into the clay swing.&rdquo; It was only his second win against the fourth-ranked Medvedev.
&ldquo;I lost a couple of tight matches to him on hard courts,&rdquo; Khachanov said.
&ldquo;On clay, I have not got a title yet but I have good results. Roland Garros two-time quarterfinals. Always winning matches but not winning the tournament. In a way, I think overall my results on clay are better than his, maybe, and mentally he said many times he does not like to play on it.&rdquo; Medvedev lost his temper near the end of the second set and was handed a point penalty after yelling at the chair umpire at the changeover. Khachanov started his final service game with a 15-0 advantage and concluded with a service winner.
Casper Ruud also made it to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Hubert Hurkacz.&nbsp;

"Yeah. I mean, everything is on the cards. I just don't know how many cards I have left. Let's see. It's still very far. Think about Los Angeles Olympic Games, but the thought of it excites me. Of course, I love to play that. But, as we know, Olympics come every four years. I can't really commit to that yet. I think I'll take it year by year and just see how body serves me, how passionate and committed I am. Really. How much motivation do I really have to do what I have done most of my life, day in, day out. It's becoming harder and harder, but I still love the sport and still have been competing at the highest level and still number one. So I feel at the moment that I still want to keep going and, keep trying to make more history. So let's let's see how far I go," Djokovic expressed, showcasing his ambition and resilience.

Sinner is the first person to defeat Djokovic in the year's opening Slam in six years and has done so by breaking his unblemished 10-0 record in Australian Open semifinals.&nbsp; With this victory, Sinner also ended Novak Djokovic's bid for an unprecedented 11th Australian Open title and a record 25th Grand Slam.&nbsp; The Italian looked in control from the word go as Djokovic made 54 unforced errors and struggled to break the 22-year-old's serve.&nbsp; This was also only the second time in his illustrious career that the Serb has not won a break point in an entire match.&nbsp; A maiden Grand Slam title on Sunday coupled with Daniil Medvedev's loss to Alexander Zverev in the second semifinal will see Sinner rise to a career-high World No. 3.&nbsp; Djokovic will remain World No. 1 irrespective of the result in the final.&nbsp; The 36-year-old's defeat brings down the curtains on an unmatched era. After nearly two-and-a-half hours of play, nothing separated Djokovic and Fritz in the quarterfinal clash. The opening game was a sign of things to come, with Fritz saving 3 break points in a 16-minute opening game.
Djokovic won the opening set after saving two set points at 5-6, but he missed out on his first 15 break points in Rod Laver Arena and looked in real trouble when his opponent snatched the second set behind an early break.
But this is Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open. The 10-time Melbourne champ cashed in on his two break chances in set three and quickly regained control of a highly entertaining clash. Fritz fought till the end, but Djokovic's second wind proved enough to blow him over.
The Serbian wrapped up a 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory in three hours, 45 minutes, the final two sets of a match that started out as a marathon racing by 82 minutes. The result moved Djokovic to 9-0 in the pair's Lexus ATP Head-to-Head, with quarter-final wins in each of the past two Grand Slams.
With that, the Serbian extended his winning run at the Australian Open to 33 matches, the best in Melbourne Park history.

After the World Number 1 men's singles player reached the Australian Open quarterfinals, Djokovic revealed his retirement plan.
'I actually talked about it few times the last year or so, that I feel while being No. 1 and still on top of the game, I don't feel like leaving tennis in that position. I feel like I want to keep on going.'
'When I feel that I am not able to compete at the highest level with the guys and be a contender for a Grand Slam title, then I'll probably consider going into retirement.'
'But that can change, obviously. I mean, a lot of things can change. I'm not a teenager anymore. I'm a father and a husband. A lot of things happening in the private life off court that I enjoy, that require my attention, my presence, my energy. Yeah, still I'm really blessed to be where I am. Let's see how far it goes,' said Djokovic.
The Serbian was ruthless in his previous Australian Open outing and thrashed Adrian Mannarino 6-0, 6-0, 6-3. He reached the Australian Open quarterfinals to match Roger Federer's all-time Grand Slam record.
It was also Djokovic's 14th Australian Open quarterfinals which is equal second on the all-time list with Rafael Nadal and John Newcombe. The difference is that he's converted most of those quarterfinal runs into titles at Melbourne Park.

The Serbian tennis star had revealed that he and Virat have been exchanging texts. In response to that, BCCI posted a video where Virat said, 'I got in touch with Novak very organically, I think I was just looking at his profile once on Instagram, and I just happened to press the message button and thought I would just say hello. And then I saw a message from him on my DM already. I had never opened it myself. I was like, let me just check if it's a fake account or something like that. But then I checked it again and it was legitimate. And then yeah, we got talking. We keep exchanging messages every now and then. I congratulated him for all his amazing achievements.'
He went on to wish Djokovic all the best for the 2024 Australian Open.
