The early morning launch came just hours after Pyongyang sent another flurry of trash-bearing balloons southward, this time forcing a three-hour halt to flights in and out of South Korea's Incheon airport.
The missile took off from an area in or around Pyongyang at about 5:30 am (2030 GMT) and South Korean and US intelligence agencies were conducting a detailed analysis, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.
The JCS official said the test of what appeared to be a hypersonic missile ended in failure after a journey of some 250 kilometres (155 miles).
More smoke than usual appeared to emanate from the missile, raising the possibility of combustion issues, the official said, adding it may have been powered by solid propellants.

The test follows North Korea launching hundreds more trash-carrying balloons southward on Monday and Tuesday, the latest in a series of border barrages that have sparked a tit-for-tat propaganda campaign.

&nbsp;Seoul's military said the balloons were carrying "mostly paper waste" that posed no safety risk to the public.
But the latest batch of North Korean balloons disrupted takeoffs and landings at Incheon International Airport, an official told AFP.
Both domestic and international flight arrivals and departures "were suspended ... from 1:46 am (1646 GMT) to 4:43 am," an Incheon International Airport Corporation official said.
"At around 4:08 am, it was confirmed that a trash-carrying balloon had fallen near Gate 248 of T2, and military authorities collected it. The airport is operating as normal since 4:44 am," the official added.
Pyongyang has already sent more than a thousand balloons carrying trash in what it says is retaliation for balloons carrying propaganda criticising leader Kim Jong Un's rule floated north by activists.
In response, Seoul has fully suspended a tension-reducing military deal and restarted some propaganda broadcasts from loudspeakers along the border.

On Tuesday, Yoon visited a US aircraft carrier that arrived in South Korea at the weekend for joint military drills aimed at countering North Korean threats.
The drills, which include Japan, are set to go ahead later this month.
Pyongyang has routinely criticised such exercises as rehearsals for an invasion.
Kim's sister and key government spokeswoman Kim Yo Jong warned this month that Seoul would "undoubtedly witness the new counteraction of the DPRK" if the leaflet drops and loudspeaker broadcasts continued.

The ballooning campaign came as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un urged his military scientists to overcome a failed satellite launch and continue developing space-based reconnaissance capabilities, which he described as crucial for countering U.S. and South Korean military activities, state media said Wednesday.
In his first public comments about the launch failure, Kim also warned of unspecified &ldquo;stern&rdquo; action against South Korea over an exercise involving 20 fighter jets near the inter-Korean border hours before North Korea's failed launch on Monday. In a speech Tuesday, Kim called the South Korean response &ldquo;hysterical insanity&rdquo; and &ldquo;a very dangerous provocation that cannot be ignored,&rdquo; the North's official Korean Central News Agency said Wednesday.
In another sign of tensions between the war-divided rivals, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea also has been flying large numbers of balloons carrying trash toward the South since Tuesday night, in an apparent retaliation against South Korean activists for flying anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets across the border.

North Korea hasn't commented on when it would be ready to attempt a satellite launch again, which some experts say could take months.
State media's mention of a liquid oxygen-petroleum rocket engine suggests the North is trying to develop a more powerful space launch vehicle that could handle larger payloads, according to some South Korean experts.
It is believed that North Korea's previous space rockets used unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine as fuel and dinitrogen tetroxide as an oxidizer. The country's swift transition in space rocket designs possibly indicates external technological help, which would likely come from Russia, said Chang Young-keun, a missile expert at South Korea's Research Institute for National Strategy.
Kim has been boosting the visibility of his ties with Russia in recent months, highlighted by a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in September, as they align in the face of their separate confrontations with Washington. Kim's meeting with Putin was held at a spaceport in the Russian Far East and came after North Korea's consecutive failures in its attempts to launch its first spy satellite. Putin then told Russian reporters that Moscow was willing to help the North build satellites.
The U.S. and South Korea have also accused North Korea of providing Russia with artillery shells, missiles and other military equipment to help prolong its fighting in Ukraine.&nbsp;

The process did not end with the selection, as the women must further go through a medical procedure to confirm their virginity, the defector said, adding that the girls would get disqualified if scars or other 'imperfections' were found.
After selecting a &lsquo;handful of girls&rsquo;, the dictator sent them to the capital, Pyongyang, where they got trained to please their master, according to Park. &nbsp;
According to the activist, the practice was started by Kim's grandfather Kim Il-Sung. Later ruler Kim Jong-II is said to have believed that sex with teenage girls would make him immortal. &nbsp;

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's powerful sister said Monday that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has requested a summit with her brother, adding any meeting was unlikely without a policy shift by Tokyo.
"Kishida recently conveyed his wish to meet with the Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea at the earliest date possible," Kim Yo Jong said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.
Relations between the two countries have long been dogged by issues including compensation for Japan's brutal occupation of the Korean peninsula between 1910 and 1945 and more recently by Pyongyang's firing of missiles over Japanese territory.
The abduction by North Korean agents of Japanese citizens in the 1970s and 1980s -- forced to train spies in Japanese language and customs -- has also long been a major point of contention.
Kishida has said he wants to change the relationship between Tokyo and Pyongyang and last year expressed his wish to meet with North Korea's leader "without any conditions", saying in a speech at the UN General Assembly that Tokyo was willing to resolve all issues, including the kidnappings.

The super-large multiple rocket launcher, referred to as KN-25 by the Seoul-Washington military, is a short-range ballistic missile, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.
The North has claimed the weapon has the capability to be equipped with a tactical nuclear warhead.
Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Kim guided the drills on Monday that tested the "real war capabilities" of 600 millimetre multiple rocket launchers as he stressed the importance of "war preparations".

During the drills, North Korean artillerymen "demonstrated their excellent crack-shot artillery marksmanship and prompt and thorough combat readiness," it added.
"Massive shells of super-large multiple rocket launchers, which were fired from the sharp gun barrels like lava, flew to the target with the flame of annihilating the enemy," it said.

State media images showed Kim, wearing his customary black leather jacket, watching the drills with his generals and celebrating their apparent success with a raised fist.

Japan's Defense Ministry said its analysis showed the missile travelled at least 500 kilometres at the maximum altitude of 50 kilometres, data that suggest North Korea may have fired a short-range and not an intermediate-range missile.
Japan and South Korea said they closely exchanged information about the launch with the United States, but they didn't immediately explain the discrepancy in data.
In a trilateral call later Sunday, senior diplomats from South Korea, the US and Japan condemned the North Korean launch and stressed that a North Korean provocation would lead to the three countries strengthening their security cooperation, according to South Korea's Foreign Ministry.
The last time North Korea performed a missile launch was December 18, when it test-fired its Hwasong-18 solid-fuelled intercontinental ballistic missile, the North's most advanced weapon. The Hwasong-18 is the country's only known solid-fuel ICBM and it's designed to strike the mainland US.
On January 5, North Korea fired a barrage of artillery shells near the disputed western sea boundary with South Korea, prompting South Korea to conduct similar firing exercises in the same area. The site is where the navies of the two Koreas have fought three bloody sea battles since 1999, and attacks blamed on North Korea killed 50 South Koreans in 2010.
In recent days, North Korea has also been escalating its warlike, inflammatory rhetoric against its foes ahead of an election year in South Korea and the US Last week, leader Kim Jong Un called South Korea &ldquo;our principal enemy&rdquo; and threatened to annihilate it if provoked.
Experts say Kim likely wants to see South Korean liberals win the election in a blow to conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol, who has taken a hard line on the North. They say Kim also wants former US President Donald Trump to be elected again because he may believe he could win US concessions if Trump returns to the White House.
Kim has been pushing hard to enlarge his nuclear and missile arsenals since his high-stakes diplomacy with Trump broke down in 2019. In recent months, North Korea has also been expanding its military and other cooperation with Russia.
The US government said it has evidence that missiles provided by North Korea to Russia had been used in the war in Ukraine. In a joint statement last week, the US, South Korea and their partners said the missile transfer supports Russia's war of aggression and provides North Korea with valuable technical and military insights.

North Korea fired an artillery barrage near two South Korean islands on Friday, Seoul's defence ministry said, warning the actions threatened peace and that it would respond.
Residents of both islands were ordered to evacuate and ferries were suspended as South Korea planned a naval drill in response, in one of the most serious military escalations on the peninsula since the North fired shells at one of the same islands in 2010.
Friday's live firing followed repeated warnings from Kim Jong Un's regime in Pyongyang that it was prepared for war against South Korea and the United States.
Seoul's defence ministry said the North's military fired "over 200 rounds" of artillery shells on Friday morning near Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong, two sparsely populated South Korean islands that are just south of a defacto maritime border between the two sides.
"This is a provocative act that threatens the peace on the Korean Peninsula," the ministry said.
"Our military closely tracks and monitors the situation in close coordination with the United States, and will take appropriate measures in response to North Korea's provocations."
The ministry said there had been "no damage to the Korean people and the military", with the shells landing north of the defacto border that is known as the Northern Limit Line (NLL).

Yeonpyeong, which has around 2,000 residents, is about 115 kilometers (70 miles) west of South Korea's capital, Seoul.

Local officials on both islands told AFP that residents had been told to evacuate, describing the order as a "preventative measure" ahead of a planned South Korean military drill.
"We have been told by the military that a drill is scheduled for this afternoon," a Yeonpyeong official said, adding that people were asked to evacuate "in case North Korea does anything in response".
One residents of the island said they were "shaking in fear" at the barrage.
"At first I thought it was the shells fired by our own military... but was told later it was by North Korea," Kim Jin-soo, a Baengnyeong island resident told local broadcaster YTN.
The shells splashed down into a so-called maritime buffer zone north of the NLL, the defence ministry said, which was set up in September 2018 in a bid to reduce tensions.
But the North scrapped the accord after Seoul partially suspended it in November, to protest Pyongyang's spy satellite launch.
"The nullification of the (accord) increases the possibility of military clashes in the border areas," Yang Moo-jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, told AFP.
He added that "the evacuation of our residents raises psychological and security concerns, which can ultimately destabilise the economy of South Korea".

Kim is expected to ramp up weapons tests in 2024 ahead of the US presidential election in November. Many experts say he likely believes his expanded nuclear arsenal would allow him to wrest US concessions if former President Donald Trump is reelected.
In a five-day major ruling party meeting last week, Kim said he will launch three more military spy satellites, produce more nuclear materials and develop attack drones this year in what observers say is an attempt to increase his leverage in future diplomacy with the US.
In a meeting on Sunday with commanding army officers, Kim said it is urgent to sharpen &ldquo;the treasured sword&rdquo; to safeguard national security, an apparent reference to his country's nuclear weapons programme. He cited &ldquo;the US and other hostile forces' military confrontation moves,&rdquo; according to the official Korean Central News Agency.
Kim stressed that &ldquo;our army should deal a deadly blow to thoroughly annihilate them by mobilizing all the toughest means and potentialities without moment's hesitation&rdquo; if they opt for military confrontation and provocations against North Korea, KCNA said.
In his New Year's Day address Monday, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said he will strengthen his military's preemptive strike, missile defence and retaliatory capabilities in response to the North Korean nuclear threat.

North Korea on Monday tested its long-range ballistic missile. The ballistic test came amid the US and South Korea's nuclear deterrence efforts.

North Korea has tested a long-range ballistic missile that is reportedly capable of hitting anywhere in the US mainland The Guardian reported quoting officials.
 As per reports, &nbsp;the missile covered a 1000 km range and reached an altitude of more than 6000 Km before landing in the east of the Korean Peninsula sea on Monday.
 North Korea's Ballistic missile test comes amid the US- South Korea's nuclear deterrence plans.
Japan's parliamentary vice-minister of Defence, Shingo Miyake, said that the missile could have a range of 15,000 km depending on the trajectory and the size of the warhead. He added that the missile have the entire US in the hitting range. He further said that by the trajectory of the missile, it looked like an Intercontinental ballistic missile (IBM), however, the authorities have to investigate it to confirm the nature of the missile.
Condemning the test, Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that the test fire of the missile is in clear violation of the UN Security Council resolution and poses a threat to the world peace and stability.

Soon after the test, Japan called a meeting of its national security council to respond to the test.
In the past, North Korea has tested many ICBM which as per theory are capable of hitting any part of the USA. However, experts believe that the country is yet to perfect its ICBM apability.
