This downpour has been caused by an "interaction" between a western disturbance and the southwest monsoon, as per the Indian Meteorological Department.
There was "good" monsoon circulation over India, and simultaneously, a western disturbance passed over the region.
Two types of winds - strong westerly and moist easterly from Bay of Bengal - converged over northwest India, and led to the severe weather condition.

In three sperate incidents of landslides in Himachal Pradesh, where a red alert of extremely heavy rains has been issued for seven districts, five people were killed.

In three separate incidents of landslides in Himachal Pradesh, where a red alert of extremely heavy rains has been issued for seven districts, five people were killed.

Torrential rains pounded several parts of north India on Sunday with 15 people killed in landslides and other rain-related incidents, while most rivers, including the Yamuna in Delhi, were in spate. In cities and towns across the region, many roads and residential areas were submerged in knee-deep water with the civic system unable to hold on in the face of record rains.
Flash floods washed away roads in hilly areas, leaving people marooned, while authorities asked tourists to plan their visit after the weather improves.
Railway services have also been hit. The Northern Railways said it has cancelled around 17 trains and diverted around 12 others, while traffic has been suspended at four locations due to waterlogging.
Heavy downpour warnings have been issued for certain areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, while in Delhi, which recorded its highest rainfall in a single day in July since 1982, authorities have cautioned over the rising water level of the Yamuna.
While Delhi received 153 mm of rain in 24 hours ending 8:30 on Sunday, Chandigarh and Ambala in Haryana reported record rainfall of 322.2 mm and 224.1 mm respectively, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Piercing cold weather conditions prevailed in Punjab and Haryana on Monday with minimum temperatures hovering a few notches below normal at many places.
In Haryana, Hisar recorded a low of 0.8 degrees Celsius less than the temperature of Himachal Pradesh's Shimla, which recorded 1.2 degrees Celsius while Ambala's minimum was 5.6 degrees Celsius.
Faridkot and Bathinda were the coldest places in Punjab with a minimum temperature of 0.2 degrees Celsius each, according to the Meteorological Department.
Amritsar recorded a low of 1.5 degrees Celsius while Ludhiana's minimum was 2.4 degrees.

The Meteorological Department has predicted some relief from 7 January as a Western Disturbance hits northwest India.

The cold wave hitting north India worsened on 6 January 2023 as temperature in Delhi's Ayanagar fell to as low as 1.8 degrees Celsius. The Safdarjung observatory, which is Delhi's primary weather station, recorded a minimum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the numbing cold was accompanied by dense fog in many areas. More than 25 trains were delayed, with the duration ranging from 1 to 10 hours.
Near the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, visibility was reduced to 200 metres at 5:30 am.

Visibility drops to zero in some places as biting cold sweeps north India

The visibility in the national capital was recorded at just 50 meters.

As biting cold conditions engulfed entire North India, fog and poor visibility remained a severe cause of concern on Monday.
Not only in Bhatinda, visibility remained low throughout Punjab, with Amritsar recording visibility of 25 metres and Ambala 50.
Haryana too recorded low visibility. While places like Ambala and Hissar recorded a low of 25m and 50m respectively, visibility in Chandigarh was 200 metres.
According to IMD data, places like Sri Ganganagar and Churu in Rajasthan also recorded low visibility of 25 and 50 meters, respectively.

Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal also recorded very low visibility on the day with number dipping to 50 metres in Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, while North Bengal recorded visibility of 200 meters.

'Dense' to 'very dense' fog was predicted by the Meteorological Department for Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, and some parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Heatwave conditions have abated in all parts of the country, with the southwest monsoon progressing towards central and east India.
The India Meteorological Department said with a fresh Western Disturbance affecting the northwest region no significant heatwave conditions are likely over any part of the country till June 29.
The MeT said the southwest monsoon is likely to cover the remaining parts of central India and many parts of northwest India between June 23 and June 29.
It also said the country as a whole has received just 42.3 mm rainfall as against 62.1 mm, a rain deficit of 32 per cent, since June 1, when the monsoon season starts.
Northwest India was reeling under a heatwave spell since June 2 and central India since June 10 due to an onslaught of hot and dry westerly winds.
