The three were awarded for discovering powerful techniques to decode and even design novel proteins, the building blocks of life. Their work used advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, and holds the potential to transform how new drugs and other materials are made.

Mary E. Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell of the United States and Japan's Shimon Sakaguchi won the Nobel Prize in Medicine on Monday for research into how the immune system is kept in check, the Nobel jury said.
Their discoveries have been decisive for understanding how the immune system functions and why we do not all develop serious autoimmune diseases.
The three were honoured "for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance", the jury said.
"Their discoveries have laid the foundation for a new field of research and spurred the development of new treatments, for example for cancer and autoimmune diseases," it added.
Their findings may also lead to more successful transplantations.
Sakaguchi, 74, made the first key discovery in 1995.
At the time, many researchers were convinced that immune tolerance only developed due to potentially harmful immune cells being eliminated in the thymus, through a process called "central tolerance".
Sakaguchi showed that the immune system is more complex and discovered a previously unknown class of immune cells, which protect the body from autoimmune diseases.
Brunkow, born in 1961, and Ramsdell, 64, made the other key discovery in 2001, when they were able to explain why certain mice were particularly vulnerable to autoimmune diseases.
"They had discovered that mice have a mutation in a gene that they named Foxp3," the jury said.
"They also showed that mutations in the human equivalent of this gene cause a serious autoimmune disease, IPEX."
Two years later, Sakaguchi was able to link these discoveries.
The trio will receive their prize -- a diploma, a gold medal and a $1.2-million cheque -- from King Carl XVI Gustaf at a formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of the death in 1896 of scientist Alfred Nobel.
Nobel created the prizes in his last will and testament.

Researchers from major US institutions typically dominate the Nobel science prizes, due largely to the US' longstanding investment in basic science and academic freedoms.
But that could change down the line following massive US budget cuts to science programmes announced by President Donald Trump.
Since January, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has terminated 2,100 research grants totalling around $9.5 billion and $2.6 billion in contracts, according to an independent database called Grant Watch.
Thomas Perlmann, secretary general of the committee that awards the Nobel Prize for Medicine, told AFP it was "no coincidence that the US has by far the most Nobel laureates".
"But there is now a creeping sense of uncertainty about the US' willingness to maintain their leading position in research," he said.
Perlmann called the United States "the very engine" of scientific research worldwide.
"There would be very serious consequences for research globally if it starts to falter," he added.
"It doesn't take very many years of large cutbacks to cause irreversible harm."
Trump has meanwhile made no secret of the fact that he wants to win a Nobel himself -- the Peace Prize.
Nobel experts have however said his "America First" policies and divisive style give him little chance against those toiling on forgotten causes outside the limelight.
"It's completely unthinkable," Oeivind Stenersen, a historian who has conducted research and co-written a book on the prize, told AFP.
"(Trump) is in many ways the opposite of the ideals that the Nobel Prize represents," he said.
"The Nobel Peace Prize is about defending multilateral cooperation, for example in the UN... and Trump breaks with that principle. He follows his own path, unilaterally," Stenersen added.
Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms (ERR) -- networks of volunteers feeding and helping people endure war and famine -- are seen as a possible winner this year, as are media watchdogs the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders.
Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, is among bookies' favourites.

Bangladesh's official anti-graft watchdog Anti-corruption Commission on Thursday questioned Muhammad Yunus, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, involving charges of money laundering and fund embezzlement.
Yunus pioneered the use of microcredit to help impoverished people in Bangladesh&mdash;a model replicated in many other countries across the world. His legal troubles have drawn international attention, with many observers considering that they are politically motivated.
He emerged from Thursday's questioning session in the commission's headquarters in the nation's capital, Dhaka, saying that he was not afraid and he did not commit any crimes. Yunus' lawyer, Abdullah Al Mamun, said the charges against his client were &ldquo;false and baseless&rdquo;.
The commission summoned Yunus, chairman of Grameen Telecom, over $2.28 million from the company's Workers Profit Participation Fund. A dozen other colleagues of Yunus face similar charges in the case.
Grameen Telecom owns 34.20 percent shares of Bangladesh's largest mobile phone company Grameenphone, a subsidiary of Norway's telecom giant Telenor. Investigators say Yunus and others misappropriated funds from the workers fund.
In August, more than 170 global leaders and Nobel laureates in an open letter urged Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to suspend legal proceedings against Yunus.
The leaders, including former US President Barack Obama, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and more than 100 Nobel laureates, said in the letter that they were deeply concerned by recent threats to democracy and human rights in Bangladesh.
&ldquo;We are alarmed that he has recently been targeted by what we believe to be continuous judicial harassment,&rdquo; said the letter.
Hasina responded by saying she would welcome international experts and lawyers to come to Bangladesh to assess the legal proceedings and examine documents involving the charges against Yunus.
In 1983, Yunus founded Grameen Bank, which gives small loans to entrepreneurs who would not normally qualify for bank loans. The bank's success in lifting people out of poverty led to similar microfinancing efforts in many other countries.
Hasina's administration began a series of investigations of Yunus after coming to power in 2008. She became enraged when Yunus announced he would form a political party in 2007 when the country was run by a military-backed government and she was in prison, although he did not follow through on the plan.
Yunus had earlier criticised politicians in the country, saying they are only interested in money. Hasina called him a &ldquo;bloodsucker&rdquo; and accused him of using force and other means to recover loans from poor rural women as head of Grameen Bank.
Hasina's government began a review of the bank's activities in 2011, and Yunus was fired as managing director for allegedly violating government retirement regulations. He was put on trial in 2013 on charges of receiving money without government permission, including his Nobel Prize award and royalties from a book.
He later faced other charges involving other companies he created, including Grameen Telecom.

Yunus went on trial separately on Aug 22 on charges of violating labour laws. The Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments brought the case against Yunus and three other people in 2021, alleging discrepancies during an inspection of Grameen Telecom, including a failure to regularise positions for 101 staff members and to establish a workers' welfare fund.

He was honoured "for his innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable," the Swedish Academy said.
His writing is defined more by form than content, where what is not said is often more revealing than what is.
Often compared to Samuel Beckett, Fosse's work is minimalistic, relying on simple language which delivers its message through rhythm, melody and silence.
His major works include "Boathouse" (1989), which was well-received by critics, and "Melancholy" I and II (1995-1996).
Fosse, 64, had featured widely in Nobel speculation for several years.
"His immense oeuvre written in Norwegian Nynorsk (one of Norway's written forms of languages) and spanning a variety of genres consists of a wealth of plays, novels, poetry collections, essays, children&rsquo;s books and translations", the jury said.

Co-curator of Nobel Week Lights Lara Szabo Greisman said the goal of the light festival is to connect the public with the prizes by bringing them &ldquo;into our everyday lives.&rdquo;
&ldquo;All of these were prizes that were awarded... for example, the LED was completely forgotten that this was a Nobel Prize,&rdquo; Szabo Greisman added.
Amid the current energy crisis, organisers have sought to reduce the consumption of main installation on the City Hall by 40%, and use LED technology to keep the festival as sustainable as possible this year.

Above all Ernaux's crystalline prose has excavated her own passage from working-class girl to the literary elite, casting a critical eye on social structures and her own complicated emotions.
Her legacy is the grit in the French literary oyster, or as she puts it, to offer an alternative to the "unconditional admiration for the pretty phrase."
She is best known for her autobiographical work A Woman&rsquo;s Story, A Man&rsquo;s Place, and Simple Passion
"In her writing, Ernaux consistently and from different angles, examines a life marked by strong disparities regarding gender, language and class", the Swedish Academy noted.
"Her work is uncompromising and written in plain language, scraped clean", it said.
"And when she with great courage and clinical acuity reveals the agony of the experience of class, describing shame, humiliation, jealousy or inability to see who you are, she has achieved something admirable and enduring".
The Nobel Prize comes with a medal and a prize sum of 10 million Swedish kronor (about $911,400).
Ernaux will receive the Nobel from King Carl XVI Gustaf at a formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of the 1896 death of scientist Alfred Nobel who created the prizes in his last will and testament.

The Nobel Peace Prize that Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov was auctioning off to raise money for Ukrainian child refugees sold Monday night for USD 103.5 million, shattering the old record for a Nobel.
Previously, the most ever paid for a Nobel Prize medal was in 2014, when James Watson, whose co-discovery of the structure of DNA earned him a Nobel Prize in 1962, sold his medal for USD4.76 million.
Three years later, the family of his co-recipient, Francis Crick, received USD 2.27 million in bidding run by Heritage Auctions, the same company that auctioned off Muratov's medal Monday, on World Refugee Day.
Muratov, who was awarded the gold medal in October 2021, helped found the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta and was the publication's editor-in-chief when it shut down in March amid the Kremlin's clampdown on journalists and public dissent in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
It was Muratov's idea to auction off his prize, having already announced he was donating the accompanying USD 500,000 cash award to charity. The idea of the donation, he said, “is to give the children refugees a chance for a future.” Muratov has said the proceeds will go directly to UNICEF in its efforts to help children displaced by the war in Ukraine.
Melted down, the 175 grams of 23-karat gold contained in Muratov's medal would be worth about USD 10,000.
In an interview with The Associated Press before the auction, Muratov said he was particularly concerned about children who have been orphaned because of the conflict in Ukraine.
“We want to return their future," he said.
He added that it's important international sanctions levied against Russia do not prevent humanitarian aid, such as medicine for rare diseases and bone marrow transplants, from reaching those in need.
“It has to become a beginning of a flash mob as an example to follow so people auction their valuable possessions to help Ukrainians,” Muratov said in a video released by Heritage Auctions, which handled the sale but is not taking any share of the proceeds.
Muratov shared the Nobel Peace Prize last year with journalist Maria Ressa of the Philippines.
The two journalists, who each received their own medals, were honoured for their battles to preserve free speech in their respective countries, despite coming under attack by harassment, their governments and even death threats.
Muratov has been highly critical of Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea and the war launched in February that has caused nearly 5 million Ukrainians to flee to other countries for safety, creating the largest humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War II.
Independent journalists in Russia have come under scrutiny by the Kremlin, if not outright targets of the government. Since Putin came into power more than two decades ago, nearly two dozen journalists have been killed, including at least four who had worked for Muratov's newspaper.
In April, Muratov said he was attacked with red paint while aboard a Russian train.
Muratov left Russia for Western Europe on Thursday to begin his trip to New York City, where live bidding will begin Monday afternoon.

Paying homage to Rabindranath Tagore on his 161st birth anniversary, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday lamented that the bard's Nobel Prize, which was stolen 18 years ago, is yet to be found.
She maintained that this "failure" on the part of CBI is a "big insult" for the people of Bengal.
Expressing apprehension that the CBI might have closed the probe by now, she said, "It pains me to think that the Nobel could not be traced even after so many years. This (theft) happened during the Left Front regime. I do not know if any evidence still exists," Banerjee said during her address at a state government programme.
"It was the first Nobel we had received. And someone snatched it away from us. This is a big insult for us," she said.
Tagore was in 1913 awarded Nobel Prize in Literature for 'Gitanjali', a collection of poems.
On March 25 2004, the medal and citation were found stolen from the safety vault of Visva Bharati museum.
Banerjee said the great poet will live on through his work.
"Do remember that Rabindranath Tagore can never be forgotten. The Nobel Prize that got lost is inscribed in our hearts. There can be only one Kabiguru," Banerjee said.
Earlier in the day, TMC MLA Mangobindho Adhikari ruffled feathers when he said "boys of Bengal" had stolen the Nobel to avenge the humiliation meted out to the bard.

Donna Strickland is only the third woman to win the Nobel prize in physics after Marie Curie in 1903 and Maria Goeppert-Mayer in 1963. She shares the prize with Arthur Ashkin and Gerard Mourou for creating the shortest and most intense laser pulses in history.
