<p>Union minister Nitin Gadkari has revealed that he encountered Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran only hours before Haniyeh was assassinated in a high-security Iranian military facility&mdash;an incident that later highlighted serious security shortcomings and sent shockwaves across the region.</p>
<p>Gadkari shared the account while speaking at a book launch, recalling his visit to Iran in July 2024 to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. He said he had travelled to Tehran at the request of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to represent India at the event.</p>
<p>According to Gadkari, several world leaders and dignitaries were staying at a five-star hotel in Tehran ahead of the inauguration. He noted that Haniyeh was present despite not being the head of any state.</p>

<p>&ldquo;All the heads of various nations were present, but one person who wasn't a head of state was Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. I met him. I saw him heading to the swearing-in ceremony along with the President and the Chief Justice,&rdquo; Gadkari said.</p>
<p>He said the situation took a dramatic turn in the early hours following the ceremony. After returning to his hotel, Gadkari said that around 4 am, the Iranian ambassador to India approached him and informed him that he had to leave immediately.</p>
<p>&ldquo;When I asked what had happened, I was told that the Hamas chief had been assassinated. I was shocked. I asked how it happened, and the answer was, 'I don't know yet',&rdquo; he said.</p>
<p>Iran later announced that Haniyeh was killed at around 1.15 am on July 31, 2024, while staying at a heavily guarded military facility in Tehran under the supervision of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). His bodyguard was also killed in the attack.</p>
<p>Gadkari said that even after the incident, there was uncertainty over how the assassination was carried out. &ldquo;Some people say he was killed because of using his mobile phone. Some say it happened in some other way,&rdquo; he told the audience.</p>
<p>During the same address, the Union minister also reflected on global geopolitics, stating that a nation&rsquo;s strength plays a decisive role in its security. Referring to Israel, he said that if a country is strong, &ldquo;no country can lay a hand on it,&rdquo; pointing to Israel&rsquo;s technological and military capabilities despite its small geographical size.</p>
<p>The IRGC has officially stated that the building where Haniyeh was staying was hit by a short-range missile.</p>
<p>However, a separate investigation reported by The Telegraph presented a different version of events. The report claimed that Israel&rsquo;s intelligence agency Mossad had recruited Iranian security personnel to assassinate Haniyeh by planting explosives inside the facility.</p>
<p>According to the report, an earlier plan to target Haniyeh during his visit to Tehran in May&mdash;when he attended the funeral of former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi&mdash;was abandoned due to heavy crowds and the risk of exposure.</p>
<p>The final operation reportedly focused on an IRGC guesthouse in northern Tehran where Haniyeh was expected to stay. Citing two Iranian officials, the report said Mossad-linked operatives planted explosive devices in three separate rooms in the complex.</p>
<p>Iranian authorities, according to the report, reviewed surveillance footage showing the operatives entering and leaving the rooms within minutes. The agents allegedly exited Iran without detection, while maintaining at least one local contact within the country.</p>
<p>At around 2 am, the explosives planted in the room occupied by Haniyeh were remotely detonated.</p>
<p>Senior IRGC officials have since acknowledged serious lapses in security. One senior official told The Telegraph that Mossad may have exploited personnel from the Ansar-al-Mahdi protection unit, which is responsible for guarding senior leaders and allied figures inside and outside Iran.</p>

<p>Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari drew attention to the persistent pollution problem in Delhi-NCR during a recent event, noting its direct impact on his health.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"I live here for three days, (and) I get allergies because of this pollution," he revealed.</p>
<p>Speaking at the book launch of veteran journalist and former central information commissioner Uday Mahurkar in Delhi, Gadkari highlighted the role of transportation in worsening air quality. "I am the transport minister and 40 per cent of pollution happens because of transport itself," he said.</p>
<p>Emphasising the urgent need for alternatives to fossil fuels, he questioned India&rsquo;s approach to energy consumption. <br><br>"What kind of nationalism is this? Fossil fuels are limited, and pollution is increasing. Can't we reduce fossil fuel usage? Why can't we promote electric vehicles and hydrogen-powered vehicles, which can lead to zero pollution?" Gadkari asked, noting that the country spends around Rs 22 lakh annually on fossil fuels.</p>
<p>The minister also spoke about his eco-friendly flex-fuel vehicle, powered entirely by ethanol, highlighting its potential to cut pollution and reduce dependence on imported fuels.</p>
<p>Gadkari&rsquo;s comments come amid worsening air quality in the capital. On Tuesday, Delhi&rsquo;s air quality reached the severe category with a 24-hour AQI of 412, making it the second-most polluted city in India. Noida recorded an average AQI of 426, the highest in the country. <br><br>By Wednesday morning, the AQI improved slightly to a very poor category, but forecasts suggest it will remain very poor over the next six days.</p>
<p>This is not Gadkari&rsquo;s first warning about Delhi pollution. During last December&rsquo;s smog season, he had expressed reluctance to visit the city. "Every time, while coming to Delhi, I think whether I should go or not. Itna bhayankar pollution hai (The pollution is just terrible)," he had said.</p>

Sharing a personal insight, he noted that hydrogen is being generated from organic municipal waste, calling it an affordable and sustainable energy source. He also mentioned his use of a hydrogen-powered car.</p>
<p>Gadkari underlined India's growing status in the world as a center of innovation and entrepreneurship. "Indian-origin CEOs heading top global firms reflect the nation's immense talent pool," he said, while also stressing the importance of improving India&rsquo;s Domestic Happiness Index.</p>
<p>Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also attended the event and lauded Gadkari as the "Vishwakarma of modern India," crediting him with transforming infrastructure across the country through expressways, green corridors, logistics hubs, and an extensive road network. Dhami urged the youth to apply their knowledge and skills to contribute to India&rsquo;s development.</p>
<p>He added that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s leadership, Uttarakhand is advancing in the fields of education and innovation. "The state is implementing the New Education Policy and introducing advanced courses like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Big Data in universities and research institutes. <p>Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said the Indian electric vehicle market potential is likely to touch Rs 20 lakh crore and will create around 5 crore jobs across the entire EV ecosystem by 2030.</p>
<p>Addressing the '8th Catalyst Conference on Sustainability of E-Vehicle Industry - Evexpo 2024', Gadkari said estimated electric vehicles finance market size will be around Rs 4 lakh crore by 2030.</p>
<p>"The Indian electric vehicles market potential is of Rs 20 lakh crore by 2030, creating five crore jobs across the entire EV ecosystem," he said.</p>
<p>The road transport and highways minister said 40 per cent of air pollution in India is because of the transport sector.</p>
<p>"We import fossil fuels worth Rs 22 lakh crore, that is a big economic challenge. And this import of fossil fuels is creating a lot of problems in our country," Gadkari said.</p>
<p>According to Gadkari, the government is concentrating on green energy as 44 per cent of India's power basket is solar power.</p>
<p>"We are giving highest priority for development of our hydro power, then solar power, green power, particularly from biomass. And now solar power is one of the important sources for all of us," he said.</p>
<p>The minister pointed out that India is facing shortages of electric buses.</p>
<p>"Our country requires one lakh electric buses but our capacity is 50,000 buses. I request all of you that this is the appropriate time that you can expand your factory," he said.</p>
<p>Gadkari asked electric vehicle manufacturers not to compromise with the quality.</p>
<p>He said the size of India's automobile industry was Rs 7 lakh crore when he took charge as transport minister in 2014. "Today it (the size of the automobile sector) is Rs 22 lakh crore. Our number is third in the world. We just surpassed Japan," he said.</p>
<p>The size of the USA's automobile industry is Rs 78 lakh crore, followed by China (Rs 47 lakh crore) and India (Rs 22 lakh crore).</p>

<p>Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday exuded confidence that India's automobile industry will rise to the number one position globally in the next five years and outlined his ministry's ambitious target to also reduce the logistics costs in India to 9 per cent over two years.</p>
<p>Speaking at the Amazon Smbhav Summit, the Road Transport and Highways Minister noted the remarkable growth of India's automobile industry, which he said has surged from Rs 7 lakh crore to Rs 22 lakh crore since he took charge of office.</p>
<p>"First is USA -- Rs 78 lakh crore, second-largest automobile industry is in China--Rs 47 lakh crore, and now India is at Rs 22 lakh crore. I am confident that within 5 years, we want to make the Indian automobile industry number 1 in the world," he said.</p>
<p>The minister said the presence of reputed global automobile brands in India is a clear indication of the country's potential.</p>
<p>He further articulated his ministry's target to reduce the logistics costs in India to a single digit within 2 years.</p>
<p>"The logistic cost in India is 16 per cent and in China, it is 8 per cent, in the USA and European countries, it is 12 per cent. The government has decided to reduce the logistic costs...in my ministry, we have the target that within 2 years, we will take this logistic cost to 9 per cent," he said.</p>
<p>Gadkari highlighted specific projects that will drastically cut travel times between major cities. He noted that the journey from Delhi to Dehradun, which currently takes about nine hours, will be reduced to just two hours by January 2025. Similarly, travel times between Delhi-Mumbai, and Chennai-Bengaluru are expected to decrease significantly, he said.</p>
<p>He then stressed the importance of adopting alternative fuels and biofuels and said using bio-ethanol in vehicles could lead to significant savings in fuel costs while simultaneously reducing pollution.</p>
<p>Gadkari also outlined plans to convert organic waste into hydrogen fuel and other valuable materials through advanced recycling technologies.</p>
<p>He pointed out that Delhi generates substantial municipal waste, with only 80 lakh tons currently being utilised.</p>
<p>"Our idea is to make hydrogen from the organic waste. By segregating the waste, we can get petrol, plastic, metals and glass. The recycling of all these materials available is possible.</p>
<p>And another technology is by which we can use this waste to get green hydrogen," he said.</p>

<p>Union roads &amp; transport minister Nitin Gadkari voiced his frustration at rampant violations of traffic rules despite steep hikes in fines because people are not taking it seriously.</p>
<p>Gadkari pointed out that enforcement alone can't bring down crashes and fatalities, along with enforcement, there is a need for a behavioural change on the roads.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The government has implemented Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to help enforce traffic rules and increased fines under the Motor Vehicle Act amendment of 2019. However, these measures haven&rsquo;t proven to be the deterrent they were expected to be.</p>
<p>While addressing the World Safety Conference, the Union Minister highlighted some statistics that paint a grim picture.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Road crash fatalities have increased by about 6% since 2019. From 1.59 lakh deaths in 2019, the number jumped to 1.68 lakh in 2022.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In 2022 alone, 50,029 people lost their lives simply because they weren&rsquo;t wearing helmets.&nbsp;</p>
<p>He also flagged the problem of mixed traffic on Indian roads and lack of lane discipline.</p>

<p>Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday once again asked Union minister Nitin Gadkari to leave the BJP if he was being "insulted", saying that the opposition in Maharashtra would ensure his victory in the Lok Sabha elections.</p>
<p>Speaking at a rally at Pusad in eastern Maharashtra's Yavatmal district, Thackeray said people like (former Congress leader) Kripashankar Singh, whom the BJP once targeted (over alleged corruption), figured in the saffron party's first list of candidates along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but Gadkari's name was missing.</p>
<p>"I had told Gadkari this two days ago, and I am repeating it again. If you are being insulted, leave the BJP and join the Maha Vikas Aghadi (alliance of Sena(UBT), NCP (SP) and Congress). We will ensure your victory. We will make you a minister when our government comes to power, and it will be a post with powers," he said.</p>
<p>Last week, responding to Thackeray's offer to Gadkari to contest as a candidate of the opposition, Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had mocked the Sena (UBT) chief, saying it was like a man in the street offering someone to make US president.</p>
<p>Gadkari was a prominent leader of the BJP, but the first list did not have names from Maharashtra as seat-sharing discussions between the BJP and its allies were not complete, Fadnavis had said.</p>
<p>Thackeray, meanwhile, termed the notification of the rules under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act as an "election jumla (slogan)." Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis and others coming to India (from neighbouring countries) are welcome but the timing of the notification was suspect as elections would be soon announced, Thackeray said.</p>
<p>It had been more than four years since the abrogation of Article 370, but no elections have taken place in Jammu and Kashmir and Kashmiri Pandits have not yet returned to their homes in Kashmir, he said.</p>
<p>The BJP should first bring Kashmiri pandits back to Kashmir and then implement the CAA, Thackeray said.</p>
<p>In the coming elections, there is the BJP which is creating enmity between religions and wants to change the Constitution, and on the other hand there is the INDIA bloc which is an alliance of patriots, he said, adding, "This election will be between `desh-bhakt' (those who love their country) and `dvesh bhakt' (those who preach hatred)." Prime minister Modi had not yet found time to visit the restive Manipur, he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Union minister Nitin Gadkari sent legal notices to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Friday for allegedly sharing misleading and defamatory news contents about him on X.</p>
<p>Gadkari's lawyer, Balendu Shekhar, said his client was shocked to know about, hear and see the contents and posts from the official handle of the Congress on the microblogging platform.</p>
<p>Kharge and Ramesh deliberately posted a 19-second video clip of Gadkari's interview given to "The Lallantop" web portal, concealing the contextual intent and meaning of his words, the lawyer said.</p>
<p>The notice said a sinister act has been committed with the sole intent and ulterior motive to fan and create confusion, sensation and disrepute to Gadkari in the eyes of public. It said it was also a futile endeavour to create rifts in the solidarity of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is poised to win the trust of people in the upcoming general election under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.</p>
<p>The notice further said Gadkari's interview was twisted, distorted and presented by uploading the video that is bereft and devoid of the contextual meaning.</p>
<p>The same has been done deliberately and consciously with a selected piece of Hindi caption that says: "Aaj gaon, mazdoor aur kisan dukhi hai. Gaon mein achhe roads nahi hai, peene ke liye shudh pani nahi hai, achhe aspatal nahi hai, achhe schools nahi hai -- Modi sarkar ke mantri Nitin Gadkari (Villages, labourers and farmers are unhappy today. Villages do not have roads, drinking water, good hospitals and schools -- Nitin Gadkari, a minister in the Modi government)." It said Kharge and Ramesh, in spite of being aware of the full contents of Gadkari's interview, wherein the efforts of the government were highlighted, deliberately posted the Hindi caption and the video clip by concealing the contextual meaning of the interaction to malign Gadkari's reputation.</p>
<p>"This legal notice is calling you to remove/delete the above mentioned post from your microbloging site 'X' forthwith and in any event, not later than 24 hours of the receipt of this legal notice, coupled with a written apology to my client within three days, failing which my client would have no other option but to take recourse to all such actions that are open to him, both civil and criminal, at your risk and expense," it said.</p>

'Campaign without bribe, tea, banners', Nitin Gadkari unveils strategy to win 2024 election

<p>Speaking at Maharashtra's Washim, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that people vote for the candidate who they think is correct for them</p>

<p>Transport Minister and senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari has announced that there will be no banners or posters featuring him, and tea will not be served to people in his Lok Sabha constituency of Nagpur during the 2024 election campaigning.</p>
<p>'For this Lok Sabha election, I have decided that no banners or posters will be put up. Tea won't be offered to people. Those who have to vote will vote and those who do not will not. Neither will I take a bribe nor will I allow anyone. But, I believe I will honestly be able to serve you all', he said during the inauguration of a highway project in Maharashtra's Washim on Friday.</p>

<p>The government will not make six airbags mandatory for cars, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Wednesday.</p>
<p>The government last year proposed to implement the six airbags safety norm from October 2023 for enhanced safety of occupants.</p>
<p>"We don't want to make six airbags rule for cars mandatory," Gadkari said at an event here.</p>
<p>Last year, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in a statement said that in order to enhance the safety of occupants of a motor vehicle, it has been decided to enhance safety features by amending the Central Motors Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989.</p>
<p>Airbags for both front seats are mandatory in vehicles manufactured on and after April 1, 2021. An airbag is a vehicle occupant-restraint system which interferes between the driver and the vehicle's dashboard during a collision, thereby preventing serious injuries.</p>

<p>Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday launched the country's first crash testing programme Bharat NCAP, which is aimed at improving road safety standards of motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.</p>
<p>This is an important day for automobile industry and the society as it will improve the safety features of vehicles, the minister for road, transport and highways said in his address.</p>
<p>The Bharat NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) mechanism has been prepared in a systematic way keeping all stakeholders' view into account, he said.</p>
<p>The country is facing two challenges, namely road accident and air pollution. Every year around 5 lakh accidents take place in India and 1.5 lakh deaths due to these accidents, Gadkari said, adding Bharat NCAP is India's own crash testing programme which aims to improve safety features in the vehicles.</p>
<p>Bharat NCAP will be implemented from October 1, 2023.</p>
<p>Under the programme, car manufacturers can voluntarily offer their vehicles tested as per the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197.</p>
<p>Based on the performance of the car in the tests, the vehicle will be awarded star ratings on a scale of 0-5, for adult occupants (AOP) and child occupants (COP).</p>
<p>Potential car customers can refer to these star ratings to compare the safety standards of different vehicles and accordingly make their purchase decision.</p>
<p>It is expected that the demand for safer cars will increase, encouraging the car manufacturers to comply with customer needs, an official statement said.</p>
<p>"With high safety standards, Indian cars will be able to compete better in the global market, increasing the export potential of the car manufacturers in India. The programme is expected to develop a safety sensitive car market in India," the ministry for road, transport and highways said.&nbsp;</p>
