All GST compensation dues will be cleared, FM Sitharaman at the GST Council meet

She further said all the GST compensation dues will be cleared, including Rs 16,982 crore for the month of June.

GST Council on Saturday reduced the Goods and Service Tax on liquid jaggery, pencil sharpeners, and certain tracking devices, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.
Briefing media after the 49th meeting of the GST Council, the minister also informed that reports of the GoM (Group of Ministers) on checking tax evasion by pan masala and gutkha industry, and on Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunals (GSTATs), have been taken on board.
She further said all the GST compensation dues will be cleared, including Rs 16,982 crore for the month of June.
The finance minister further said the GST Council has decided to rationalise late fees on filing of annual GST returns after the due date.
Finance ministers of states and UTs (with legislature) and senior officials of Union Government and states participated in the meeting.&nbsp;

Replying to the debate in Lok Sabha on the general budget on Friday, the Finance Minister also talked about the new tax regime stating that it will leave higher disposable income in the hands of people.

Noting that Indian economy is still the fastest growing major economy and shall continue to be so in 2023-24, Finance Minister Niramala Sitharaman made a strong attack on Congress in Lok Sabha on Friday on the issue of corruption stating that it is the party's culture "to benefit jijas and bhatijas" and the party leaders should "wash faces with dettol".
Replying to the debate in Lok Sabha on the general budget on Friday, the Finance Minister also talked about the new tax regime stating that it will leave higher disposable income in the hands of people.
"Taking my name, they said that Nirmala Sitharaman allotted a certain amount of green for someone. We don't make policies keeping one person in mind unlike an opposition leader claimed. In PM Modi's government, we make policies keeping everyone in mind. So, such statements are absolutely wrong. I have been repeatedly the target of such language by the leader. I am not taking anybody's name because the leader is not around here now. Throw the allegation and go away," she said in Lok Sabha.

Speaking to reporters after presentation of the Budget, Sitharaman said the country has been waiting for a direct tax regime which is simplified and easy in compliance.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said the government has made the new income tax regime more attractive for taxpayers and has thus brought about 'substantial changes' in its structure for the benefit of the middle class.
The Budget 2023-24 has proposed changes in the optional tax regime, which was introduced in 2020-21.
Speaking to reporters after presentation of the Budget, Sitharaman said the country has been waiting for a direct tax regime which is simplified and easy in compliance.
"The personal income tax has had substantial changes (in the Budget) which will benefit the middle class. The new taxation regime has now got greater traction and incentive so that people can now unhesitatingly move to the new regime from old," the finance minister said.
As per the changes proposed in the Budget, no tax would be levied on people with annual income of up to Rs 7 lakh under the new tax regime but it made no changes for those who continue in the old regime that provides for tax exemptions and deductions on investments and expenses such as HRA.
In what is being seen as a push for the salaried class to switch to the new tax regime where no exemptions on investments are provided, the finance minister in her Budget for 2023-24 allowed a standard deduction of Rs 50,000 under the new regime.
The old tax regime provides for a similar deduction and no tax on income up to Rs 5 lakh.

Sitharaman said the government wants to make the new tax regime attractive enough and compliance should not be burdensome on taxpayers. However, if someone feels the old regime is more beneficial, he/she can continue in it.
"The ultimate interest is to make the simpler (new) regime more attractive," Sitharaman said.
Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra said majority of individual taxpayers would find it more attractive to shift to the new regime.
Malhotra, however, did not give details on the number of taxpayers who have migrated to new tax regime since 2020-21.
Under the revamped new tax regime, no tax would be levied for income up to Rs 3 lakh. Income between Rs 3-6 lakh would be taxed at 5 per cent; Rs 6-9 lakh at 10 per cent, Rs 9-12 lakh at 15 per cent, Rs 12-15 lakh at 20 per cent and income of Rs 15 lakh and above will be taxed at 30 per cent.
"I propose to extend the benefit of standard deduction to the new tax regime. Each salaried person with an income of Rs 15.5 lakh or more will thus stand to benefit by Rs 52,500," Sitharaman said.&nbsp;

The salaried class is keenly awaiting this year's budget announcement. After being left disappointed last year, with not too much being announced by way of tax relief, the salaried class has high hopes from the Finance Minister, this year.&nbsp; Income Tax Slab Revision: Personal income tax slabs and rates have not been changed since 2017-18. Experts are of the view that income tax slabs should be revised to give tax payers more purchasing power.&nbsp;
Basic Exemption Limit: Expectations are that the basic exemption limit be raised to Rs 5 lakh from the prevailing Rs 2.5 lakh.&nbsp; Increase the limit under section 80 C: A long standing demand has been to increase the 80 C limit from the current 1.5 lakhs (since 2014-15) to 2.5 lakhs. There are a whole slew of long-term savings options such as PPF, ELSS, NSC, NPS, Bank FDs etc. And an increase in this limit would encourage taxpayers to increase investments while saving taxes.&nbsp; Increase the limit under section 80 D: Experts say the limit under section 80D for claiming health insurance should be increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 and for the elderly from Rs 50,000 to 75,000.&nbsp;

Mobile phones may get cheaper as the government reduced customs duty on the camera lens and camera module parts. Customs duty has also been cut on some parts of the open cell of TV panels. Lab-grown diamonds may become cheaper with the duty reduced on their manufacturing seeds. Good news was also announced for electric car buyers as the finance minister cut customs duty on machinery for manufacture of lithium-ion cell. Also reduced was customs duty on the heating coil for making electric kitchen chimneys.
However, there are many items which may get costlier as the new rates kick in.
Cigarette prices are set to rise with the government hiking the National Calamity Contingent Duty (NCCD). Customs duty has also been increased on articles made of gold, silver, and platinum. Similarly, duty has been increased for imitation jewellery. Both internal combustion and electric vehicles in semi-knocked down form or completely built unit form are set for a customs duty hike. Bicycles, toys, and foreign-made electric kitchen chimneys are also set for a customs hike.

Presenting the Budget for 2023-24, she said replacing old polluting vehicles is an important part of greening the economy.
The minister also said that coastal shipping will be promoted as the energy-efficient and lower-cost mode of transport, both for passengers and freight, through PPP mode with viability gap funding.
Recently, Union minister Nitin Gadkari had said more than nine lakh vehicles, owned by central and state governments, transport corporations and public sector undertakings, that are older than 15 years will go off the road from April 1 and new vehicles will replace them.
According to a recent notification by the road transport and highways ministry, from April 1, all vehicles owned by central and state governments, including buses owned by transport corporations and public sector undertakings, that are older than 15 years will be de-registered and scrapped.
The rule shall not apply to the special purpose vehicles (armoured and other specialised vehicles) used for operational purposes for the defence of the country and for the maintenance of law and order and internal security, the notification had said.

In the run-up to the Budget presentation, expectations are rife that she may tweak income-tax slabs to provide relief to the middle class and increase spending on the poor through programmes such as the rural job scheme while ramping up financial incentives for local manufacturing.
But all this she has to do while staying on the course of the fiscal consolidation path. To her aid are inflation falling below the target and buoyancy in tax collections. It says that India will remain the fastest growing major economy in the world, driven by private consumption, higher capex, strengthening corporate balance sheet, credit growth to small businesses and return of migrant workers to cities. The Survey also talks about the post-COVID economic recovery and says that the Economy has nearly "recouped" what was lost, "renewed" what had paused, and "renerengised" what had slowed during the pandemic and since the conflict in Europe. The Economic Survey has also highlighted that though RBI&rsquo;s projection of 6.8 per cent inflation this fiscal is outside the upper target limit, but it&rsquo;s not high enough to deter private consumption, and also not too low to weaken inducement to invest.

Already struggling with the higher cost of living, the country's middle class, which is defined as those earning between Rs. 2.5 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh per annum is calling for tax relief to support their economic well-being.&nbsp;
The tax rate for individuals has not been changed since&nbsp; FY2017-18 and the &lsquo;New Tax Regime&rsquo; announced in 2020. Therefore, middle-class want Budget 2023 to make changes to the slab rates for individuals to reduce the tax burden.&nbsp;
Another demand of the middle class is to move tuition fees of children to a separate provision from the Section 80C deductions, which already covers a lot of other investments/expenses and has a limit of just Rs. 1.5 Lakhs.
Along with this, there is also a long-standing demand to increase the deduction for Health Insurance under section 80D from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000.
Given that the Indian economy is slowly recovering from impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which also led to wide-spread job losses, the middle class is calling for job creation measures to also be a key focus of the Union Budget.&nbsp;
