Health authorities in Kerala on Friday issued an alert across three northern districts after two people showed possible signs of Nipah virus infection, reviving fears of an outbreak that the state has battled in the past.
Health alerts have been issued in the districts of Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Palakkad, officials said.
The suspected cases from Malappuram and Palakkad districts were flagged during routine testing at government medical colleges in Kozhikode and Malappuram.
Samples have been rushed to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for confirmation, an official release said here.
"We have already strengthened preventive measures in line with Nipah protocol," said Health Minister Veena George after chairing an emergency meeting to assess the situation.
In Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad districts, 26 special teams have been formed in each region to carry out contact tracing, monitor symptoms and inform the public.
Help from the police has been sought to identify people who may have been exposed to the patients, the minister said.
District collectors have been asked to prepare containment zones, and public announcements are being made to raise awareness.
State and local helplines are being set up to assist the public.
Officials are also being urged to check if any unnatural or unexplained deaths have occurred in recent weeks -- one of the key warning signs of a potential outbreak, she said.
Another high-level meeting will be held this evening to take stock of the evolving situation and ensure all precautions are in place.&nbsp;

The announcement was made after one more case of Nipah virus was confirmed on 15th September, taking the total case tally to six.
Two people have died due to the infection in the latest outbreak.

In the wake of the Nipah outbreak in Kozhikode, a holiday has been declared for all educational institutions on Thursday and Friday.
The holiday was declared by Kozhikode District Collector A Geetha who in a Facebook post said educational institutions can arrange online classes on the two days for students.
However, there will be no change in the university exams schedule, she added.
A 24-year-old health worker became Kerala's fifth confirmed Nipah case on Wednesday since its recent outbreak.
Meanwhile, a 24-hour control room was set up in the neighbouring district of Wayanad following the Nipah outbreak in Kozhikode The Wayanad district administration also constituted 15 core committees to lead the prevention and surveillance activities and effectively deal with emergency situations.
The virus strain seen in the state was the Bangladesh variant that spreads from human to human and has a high mortality rate, though it is less infectious, the government said.
The condition of all 76 people who are in the high-risk contact category remains stable, State Health Minister Veena George had said.
The government had also said that 13 others who have mild symptoms are now being monitored in the hospital, and only a 9-year-old child - among those infected - is in the Intensive Care Unit.
It had said that monoclonal antibodies have been ordered from ICMR to treat the child. It is the only available anti-viral treatment for Nipah virus infection, though it has not been clinically proven yet.
A review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was also held in the wake of the outbreak of the brain-damaging virus.
The high-level meeting chaired by the CM analysed the situation thoroughly and "we have come to the conclusion that all the possible prevention measures are in place and there is no need to panic", George had said.
The minister had also said the WHO and ICMR studies had found out that the entire state of Kerala is prone to getting such infections, not just Kozhikode.
People living in forest areas have to take the highest precautions, George had said and added that the latest case of the Nipah virus originated within five kilometres of a jungle area.
Four more wards - three in Villyapally panchayat and one in Purameri panchayat- in Kozhikode district had been declared as containment zones yesterday in addition to those announced on Tuesday.
Considering the serious nature of the disease, the Kozhikode administration had on Tuesday declared seven village panchayats-Atanchery, Maruthonkara, Tiruvallur, Kuttiyadi, Kayakkodi, Villyapalli, and Kavilumpara- as containment zones.&nbsp;

Teams from the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune would arrive in Kerala during the day to set up a mobile lab at Kozhikode Medical College to test for Nipah and carry out survey of bats, the state government said in the assembly on Wednesday.
The move comes in the wake of Nipah infection being confirmed in four persons in Kozhikode district of the state.
Responding to a query regarding the Nipah infection in the assembly, State Health Minister Veena George said that the virus strain seen in Kerala was the Bangladesh variant that spreads from human to human and has a high mortality rate, though it is less infectious.
George further said that besides the teams from NIV, Pune, a group of epidemiologists would reach Kerala today from Chennai to carry out a survey.
Additionally, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has agreed to fly down the monoclonal antibodies that are required to treat Nipah patients, she told the House.
The minister was responding to a query by CPI MLA P Balachandran during the Question-Answer hour regarding the measures taken to deal with the Nipah virus which has killed two and infected two others in Kozhikode.
George said surveillance, contact tracing, categorising them into low and high risk, setting up isolation facilities for them, demarcating containment zones and procuring medicines from ICMR for those infected, were some of the numerous steps taken by the Health Department to prevent the spread of the brain-damaging virus.
Seven village panchayats -- Atanchery, Maruthonkara, Tiruvallur, Kuttiyadi, Kayakkodi, Villyapalli, and Kavilumpara -- in Kerala's Kozhikode district have been declared as containment zones.
Soon after the Nipah virus infection was confirmed in Kozhikode district on Tuesday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had urged people not to panic and to take precaution instead.
"Everyone should strictly follow the instructions of the health department and the police and fully cooperate with the restrictions," he had said.
One of those infected with the virus was a nine-year-old boy.
The death of the first person, on August 30, was initially considered a death due to the comorbidity of liver cirrhosis, but his son, the nine-year-old boy who is already in ICU, and his 24-year-old brother-in-law are the two positive cases that were detected on Tuesday.&nbsp;

It has been confirmed that the two deaths reported from Kozhikode were caused by Nipah virus, Mandaviya told reporters.
A central team of experts has been sent to the state to take stock of the situation. It will also help the state government in the management of the infection, he said.
According to official sources, samples of four more people from Kerala have been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for testing for the deadly virus.
Earlier in the day, the Kerala government set up a control room in Kozhikode and advised people to use masks as a precautionary measure.
In a Facebook post, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said his government is viewing the two deaths seriously.
He, however, said there is no need to worry as most of those who were in close contact with the deceased are under treatment.
