The US' priority should be to reverse the "downward spiral" in ties with India, Republican leader Nikki Haley has said, stressing that New Delhi must be treated as a "prized free and democratic" partner.
The Indian-American leader's remarks in an opinion piece in the Newsweek magazine on Wednesday came amid strain in ties between the two countries following President Donald Trump slapping 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods.
Haley said that few objectives are more critical to the Trump administration&rsquo;s foreign policy goals of &ldquo;outcompeting China and achieving peace through strength&rdquo; than putting "US-India relations back on track".
For this, she said, "India must be treated like the prized free and democratic partner that it is&mdash;not an adversary like China", which, she said has so far avoided sanctions for its Russian oil purchases, despite being one of Moscow's "largest customers".
President Trump has doubled tariffs on Indian goods to a whopping 50 per cent including a 25 per cent additional duties for India's purchase of Russian crude oil.
Haley said if this disparity does not demand a closer look at US-India relations, the "realities of hard power should".
She said Washington's "most urgent priority should be to reverse the downward spiral" in bilateral ties with New Delhi.
"Scuttling 25 years of momentum with the only country that can serve as a counterweight to Chinese dominance in Asia would be a strategic disaster," she said.
Haley stressed that India is vital to US efforts to shift supply chains from China, with the capacity to produce at scale in areas like textiles, phones, and solar panels.
She added that New Delhi's expanding defence ties with the US and allies make it a "crucial asset to the free world's security", and its growing role in West Asia, and strategic location along China&rsquo;s trade routes make it a key security and economic partner.
Haley, the former Governor of South Carolina, was the US Ambassador to the United Nations under Trump&rsquo;s first presidential term, becoming the first Indian-American to be appointed to a cabinet-level post in the US administration.
In 2013, she officially announced her candidacy for the 2024 presidential election and withdrew from the race in March last year.

Indian-American Republican leader Nikki Haley on Thursday said that India had &ldquo;every right&rdquo; to retaliate and defend itself after the Pahalgam terror attack, asserting that Pakistan does not get to play the "victim".
India launched Operation Sindoor in retaliation for the terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir in which 26 civilians were killed.
Under the operation, India struck nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir with missiles and drones.
"Terrorists launched an attack that killed dozens of Indian citizens. India had every right to retaliate and defend itself. Pakistan does not get to play the victim. No country gets a pass for supporting terrorist activity," Haley said in a post on X.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told reporters in New Delhi that the Indian military carried out a &ldquo;measured, non-escalatory, proportionate, and responsible&rdquo; strike to dismantle terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan to &ldquo;deter and to pre-empt&rdquo; any further terrorist strikes.
Addressing a packed press conference, Misri said it was deemed essential that the perpetrators and planners of the April 22 attack be brought to justice, as there was &ldquo;no demonstrable&rdquo; step from Islamabad to take action against the terror infrastructure on its territory or territory under its control.
Haley is the former governor of South Carolina and served as the US Ambassador to the United Nations during Donald Trump's first presidential term.

Republican former UN ambassador Nikki Haley suspended her White House campaign Wednesday, declining to endorse former president Donald Trump but calling on him to earn the support of moderates and independents who backed her in the primary.
"It is now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him, and I hope he does that," Haley said in a televised address in Charleston, South Carolina.
Haley was in a two-person contest with Trump for the chance to face President Joe Biden in November's election but won just one state on "Super Tuesday" and never presented a serious obstacle in Trump's path to the nomination.
The 52-year-old was little known outside her native South Carolina before Trump tapped her as ambassador to the United Nations back in 2017 and used the high-profile UN post to cultivate an image as a plain-speaking conservative.
She prided herself on being the last challenger standing between the "chaos" of Trump and the 2024 Republican White House nomination.
"I am filled with the gratitude for the outpouring of support we've received from all across our great country," Haley added.
"But the time has now come to suspend my campaign. I said I wanted Americans to have their voices heard -- I have done that. I have no regrets."
