A Nihang Sikh allegedly killed a young man in Punjab's Kapurthala district over suspicions of sacrilege, police said on Tuesday. The Nihang, identified as Ramandeep Singh, uploaded a video on social media taking responsibility for the murder.
"A Nihang Sikh killed a youth at Gurudwara Shri Choura Khooh Sahib over suspicions of sacrilege. Senior Police officials are present at the spot. Further investigation is underway," Phagwara SP Gurpreet Singh said in a statement.
Nihangs are a Sikh warrior group believed to be created by Fateh Singh, the son of Guru Gobind Singh. Also known as Guru Ki Fauj, they are seen in dark blue attire and turbans, and are known to carry arms. &nbsp;
In recent times, they have been involved in many cases of violence often over alleged sacrilege - disrespecting something considered holy by Sikhs.
In November last year, a policeman was killed in the exchange of fire that resulted from the tension between two Nihang groups vying for control of a Gurudwara at Sultanpur Lodhi. Five people were arrested in the incident.&nbsp;

A constable was killed and five others were injured after Nihangs opened fire at them in Punjab's Kapurthala.

A police constable was killed while two others sustained injuries when a group of 'Nihangs' opened fire at them in Punjab's Kapurthala district, officials said on Thursday.
The incident took place when the policemen went to arrest some Nihangs (Sikhs armed with traditional weapons) in Sultanpur Lodhi in a case registered against them, said a senior police official over the phone.
The policemen were standing on the road when the Nihangs opened fire at them, Kapurthala Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Tejbir Singh Hundal told PTI.
While one constable was killed, two other personnel sustained injuries, said the official.
Senior officials have rushed to the site and police personnel in large numbers have been deployed in the area, they said.

Days after a clash between Punjab police and followers of Khalistani sympathiser Amritpal Singh, it has emerged that Punjab Police personnel are receiving training in 'Gatka', a martial arts form mainly practiced by members of the Sikh community.

The special training is aimed at ensuring physical fitness of cops, as well as preparing them to deal with dangerous situations, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Avtar Singh was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Police said stones and bricks were pelted by both sides and some people fired in the air. Police resorted to lathi-charge to bring the crowds under control. Subsequently, heavy police force was deployed around the Dera premises.
The Nihangs are a Sikh sect whose members are usually dressed in blue robes, and carry weapons like swords and spears. Members of the Nihang sect have been mired in multiple controversies in recent times, including an alleged lynching at Singhu farm protest site in October 2021. In May 2022, violent clashes broke out in Patiala between Nihang Sikhs and a Shiv Sena faction.
