A team of researchers from York University in Canada has revealed that individuals engaged in work shifts outside the conventional 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. timeframe are at a higher risk of experiencing cognitive impairments. These challenges encompass difficulties in clear thinking, the decline in brain function, and alterations in behavioural patterns.
Researchers examined the sleep patterns and cognitive abilities of a diverse group of individuals who regularly worked night shifts. The study found a correlation between those who worked during the night and a higher incidence of memory-related problems.
One of the key findings of the study was that the disruption of the body's natural circadian rhythm due to night shift work can negatively impact sleep quality and duration. Sleep is crucial for memory consolidation and cognitive function. The irregular sleep patterns associated with night shifts can lead to sleep deprivation and an inadequate amount of deep, restorative sleep. This, in turn, may contribute to memory difficulties over time.

According to new research published in the European Heart Journal, night shift workers are at an elevated risk of developing Atrial&nbsp;Fibrillation (AFib). The study also suggested that night shift work is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, but not stroke or heart failure.

For the study, researchers analysed 286,353 salaried or self-employed participants from the UK Biobank database. The team adjusted their analyses for factors affecting the results, such as age, physical exercise, diet, body mass index, blood pressure and sleep duration. During a follow-up period of 10.4 years, 5,777 cases of AFib were reported.
As per the findings, people who worked <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/working-night-shifts-could-cause-dna-damage-scientists-warn-1548679781722" target="_blank" rel="noopener">night shifts</a> on a temporary basis had a 12% increased risk of AFib compared to people who worked during the day. The risk increased to 18% for those who had a lifetime duration of night shifts. Researchers also found that women are more susceptible to AFib than men when working night shifts for more than ten years. Their risk increased by 64% compared to day workers.

First of all, the notion that you&rsquo;re either an early bird or a night owl may not be true. In fact,&nbsp;most&nbsp;of us&nbsp;(that is&nbsp;60 per cent)&nbsp;are&nbsp;an intermediate mix of the two, found a study published in The Journal of Biological and Medical Rhythm Research.&nbsp;
<h3>Who is more productive?&nbsp;&nbsp;</h3>
When it comes to productivity, it was found that night owls&nbsp;are better at getting their work done in the later hours of the day while early birds function their best in the morning. This doesn&rsquo;t speak to better&nbsp;productivity&nbsp;but simply&nbsp;carries an obvious advantage for career paths with flexible or shift work.
Age also affects your alarm clock preferences. Unsurprisingly,&nbsp;adolescence&nbsp;is more skewed towards&nbsp;the owl chronotype. As you get older,&nbsp;it is more common to shift&nbsp;preferences&nbsp;to&nbsp;the&nbsp;more wee&nbsp;hours of the&nbsp;morning.
<h3>Who is happier?&nbsp;</h3>
Most studies have observed a link between being a morning person and better happiness.&nbsp;A recent study of Turkish students published in the same journal found that&nbsp;those who self-professed as being morning persons also reported higher scores in measures of happiness.
Another study from the&nbsp;University of Leipzig in Germany discovered that early birds also exhibit greater&nbsp;satisfaction with life and are typically less vulnerable to mental health problems.
<h3>Why are morning people so&nbsp;much better off?&nbsp;</h3>
While the science is unclear, &lsquo;social jet lag&rsquo; may be one way to explain it. People&nbsp;who naturally like late nights are out of sync with society&rsquo;s expectations of when to sleep and when to start work.&nbsp;This means nights owls may be more likely to have sleep problems which&nbsp;could, in turn, open the door&nbsp;to other mental issues.
