As much as $24 million was recovered from a suspended Nigeria minister as part of an ongoing corruption into a major national welfare programme designed to help ease poverty.

It claimed this included "N585.2 million audaciously diverted by her to a private account".
The measure against the humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation minister came days after another senior official was suspended over corruption allegations.
Halima Shehu, the head of NSIPA -- which falls under the poverty ministry -- was arrested and released on bail, while former poverty minister Sadiya Umar-Farouq was also taken for questioning, according to local media.
Tinubu came to power last year promising to crack down on graft in Nigeria.
He vowed reforms and swiftly suspended several officials, including former central bank chief Godwin Emefiele and ex-head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Abdulrasheed Bawa.
But Edu is the first minister the president has suspended.
Nigeria remains one of the lowest ranked on Transparency International's widely watched corruption perceptions index.
Africa's most populous nation has seen the poverty rate increase from 40 percent of the population in 2018 to 46 percent in 2023, affecting around 104 million people, the World Bank said last month.

A boat carrying residents returning from a wedding capsized in northern Nigeria killing about 100 people, police and local residents said Tuesday, as a search for survivors intensified.
The boat capsized early Monday on the Niger River in the state of Kwara close to neighbouring Niger state, police spokesman Okasanmi Ajayi said.
&ldquo;What we gathered was there was a boat that capsized and about 100 people died,&rdquo; he said.
The victims, including women and children, were returning from an overnight wedding ceremony in the village of Egboti in Niger state, said Usman Ibrahim, a resident.
It was not immediately clear if there were survivors.
&ldquo;People in the boat were to take their bikes to their various communities (upon disembarking). The boat was carrying more than 100 people when it sank,&rdquo; said Ibrahim.
Many of the victims drowned because the accident happened at about 3 am and not many knew of it until hours later, he said.
Boat accidents are common in many remote communities across Nigeria where locally made vessels are commonly used for transport.
Most accidents are attributed to overloading and the use of poorly maintained boats.&nbsp;

The Spanish coast guard on Monday rescued three migrants who undertook an 11-day voyage perched on a tanker's rudder. The ship arrived in the Spanish-owned Canary Islands from Lagos in Nigeria, according to Marine Traffic, a global ship-tracking website.&nbsp;

Once rescued, they were provided with initial care by emergency medical workers and then were immediately referred to hospitals for further care.&nbsp;
All three were hospitalised due to moderate dehydration and hypothermia after the 11-day voyage across the Atlantic, Spanish news agency EFE reported.&nbsp;
The three were spotted balancing themselves on the rudder, Atlantic waters just half-a-meter below their feet, as seen in the coast guard photograph.&nbsp;

The spot where they sat during their journey from Nigeria is located under the stern of a ship, wide open and susceptibe to any blow from the sea.&nbsp;
EFE reports that this is not the first time stowaways have been found in the port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in a particularly dangerous part of the ship. Two years ago, three people were found on the rudder of the Ocean Princess II; and last month, three more spotted on a Norwegian oil tanker. Both ships had arrived from Lagos.&nbsp;
Reports state that the Canary Islands are often used by African migrants as a gateway to Europe and according to Spanish data, in comparison to last year, sea migration to the islands jumped 51% till May 2022.&nbsp;

The Indian embassy in Equatorial Guinea said it has been in regular contact with the crew members over phone and assured that they are all safe. It added that the sailors have been shifted back to the ship from the detention centre where they were being held.&nbsp;

Earlier, the 16 Indian sailors had issued a video statement appealing for help. They said after being arrested in international waters on August 12, they were brought ashore on August 14 under naval escort and threat of lethal action against the vessel and crew if orders are not complied.&nbsp;
The crew members said that on the night of August 8, a vessel claiming to be Nigerian Navy asked merchant ship Heroic Idun to follow them. Heroic Idun's crew was however unable to confirm the identity of the vessel after checking with various shipping and port autohrities and therefore sailed out of the location at full speed fearing a pirate attacked.&nbsp;
The crew claims that they were informed on August 9 that the unidentified ship was Nigerian Navy.&nbsp;

Nearly 900 inmates escaped in a jailbreak in Abuja, Nigeria's capital city, officials said Wednesday, blaming the attack on Islamic extremist rebels.
At least 443 of the 879 escapees are still missing, Umar Abubakar, a spokesman for the Nigerian Correctional Service said, while hundreds of others have either been recaptured or turned themselves in at police stations.
The “very determined” rebels attacked the Kuje maximum prison in Abuja on Tuesday night with “very high-grade explosives,” killing one guard on duty.
Explosions and gunfire were heard at about 10 p.m. in the Kuje area when the attackers arrived and forced their way into the prison through a hole created by the blasts.
The Islamic extremist rebels who attacked the prison have waged an insurgency in the country’s northeast for over a decade.
Their attack on the detention facility freed many of their members who are inmates, prison officials said.
The Kuje maximum security prison had nearly 1,000 inmates including 64 suspects of the Boko Haram extremist group all of whom have escaped.

India's civil aviation ministry shared a fresh list of 13 countries where Indians can fly.&nbsp;
After announcing earlier that India is in talks with several more countries to join its air bubble, civil aviation minister Hardeep&nbsp;Singh&nbsp;Puri&nbsp;shared on Twitter that in addition with the US and UK, Indians can now fly to a total of 13 countries.&nbsp;
This includes travel between India and Afghanistan, Bahrain, Canada, France, Germany, Iraq, Maldives, UAE, Nigeria and Qatar.&nbsp;
Air bubbles are bilateral agreements wherein certain airlines from both countries can fly to each other.&nbsp;
