Two days before the inauguration of India's new Parliament building, the Supreme Court refused to entertain a petition regarding the event.
The petitioner wanted President Droupadi Murmu, and not Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the new legislature building. A two-judge bench of the top court told the petitioner on May 26, 2023, that it understands "how and why" the plea was filed.
The court allowed the petitioner to withdraw the plea, despite the Union government saying that it might be filed in the High Court later.
Around 20 Opposition parties have decided to boycott the ceremony to protest the "sidelining" of the president. In a joint statement on May 24, 19 political parties said, "When the soul of democracy has been sucked out of Parliament, we find no value in a new building." The BJP-led NDA shot back, condemning the "contemptuous" decision.
"This act is not merely disrespectful; it is a blatant affront to the democratic ethos and constitutional values of our great nation," parties belonging to the ruling NDA said in a statement on May 24.

Amid a controversy over the inauguration of India's new Parliament building, around 25 political parties are expected the attend the ceremony on May 28, 2023.
Along with 18 parties which are members of the ruling National Democratic Alliance, seven other outfits are likely to take part in the event.
These include Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party, Sukhbir Badal's Shiromani Akali Dal, HD Deve Gowda's Janata Dal (Secular), Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSR Congress, Naveen Patnaik's Biju Janata Dal, and Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party.

India will get a new power of seat on Sunday, with the inauguration of the new building built over an area of 64,500 square metres.&nbsp;

Ahead of the new Parliament building inauguration, more details on the grand ceremony have emerged. As per India Today, the ceremony will begin with Havan, followed by the installation of Sengol, the release of a special coin and stamp and lastly, speech by the President and the Vice-president will be read out.&nbsp;
The Havan will be performed between 7.30 to 8.30 am on May 28, the day of the inauguration.
After this, between 8.30-9.00 am, Sengol installation will take place.&nbsp;
Following this, special coin and stamp will reportedly be released.

'Sengol', a historical sceptre from Tamil Nadu having a linkage with the Chola dynasty, will be placed inside the new Parliament building.
As per historical evidence, usually an emperor carries a Sengol and it symbolises that they are not under any other dynasty. It also means that other smaller kings under the emperor would be paying taxes to him.
Home Minister Amit Shah invoked Jawaharlal Nehru while announcing that the sceptre will be placed inside the new Parliament building.
Notably, the sceptre was handed over to Jawaharlal Nehru by the British in 1947 while handing over power and freedom to India.
Shah said that Sengol represents the same feeling that Jawaharlal Nehru felt on August 14, 1947.
Shah further said that the transfer of power is not merely a handshake or signing a document and that it must remain connected with local traditions keeping in mind modern needs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the newly- constructed Parliament building on May 28.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met Modi on Thursday and extended an invitation to inaugurate the new building, the Lok Sabha Secretariat said.
The new Parliament building can comfortably seat 888 members in the Lok Sabha chamber and 300 in the Rajya Sabha chamber, it said.
In case of a joint sitting of both the Houses, a total of 1,280 members can be accommodated in the Lok Sabha chamber.
The prime minister had laid the foundation stone of the new parliament building on December 10, 2020.
The new building has been built in record time with quality construction, the Lok Sabha Secretariat said.
The present building of the Parliament was completed in 1927, and is now 96 years old.
Over the years, the old building was found to be inadequate for present day requirements.
Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had passed resolutions urging the government to construct a new building for the Parliament.
