JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar took oath as Bihar Chief Minister for a record 10th time at Gandhi Maidan, with 22 ministers sworn in amid NDA leaders&rsquo; presence.

JD(U) president Nitish Kumar was on Thursday sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar for a record tenth time at a grand ceremony, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah among those who were present at the swearing-in.
BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda and the party's in-charge for the recently held state polls Dharmendra Pradhan were also among those who had flown down to attend the ceremony, where Kumar, along with a 21-member cabinet, was administered the oath of office by Governor Arif Mohammed Khan.
Kumar resigned as chief minister on Wednesday and staked claim to form the new government before Governor Khan.
"My heartiest congratulations to all the colleagues who took oath as ministers in the Bihar government. This is a splendid team of dedicated leaders, which will take Bihar to new heights. My best wishes to all of them!" Modi said on X.
Modi, whose charisma had played a big role in the NDA's massive victory in the assembly polls, regaled the crowds when, towards the end of the ceremony, he rotated his 'gamchha' in his signature style.
A gigantic stage had been set up at the Gandhi Maidan, where the attendees included chief ministers from several states ruled by the NDA, prominent among them being N Chandrababu Naidu (Andhra Pradesh) and Yogi Adityanath (Uttar Pradesh), Devendra Fadnavis (Maharashtra), Himanta Biswa Sarma (Assam) and Rekha Gupta (Delhi).
Prominent among those who took the oath on the occasion were Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, the leader and deputy leader, respectively, of the BJP legislative party, both of whom were deputy CMs in the previous NDA government in the state.
At least three ministers are members of the state legislative council. They are JD(U) national general secretary Ashok Choudhary, one of the most trusted aides of the CM, state BJP president Dilip Jaiswal and Hindustani Awam Morcha chief Santosh Kumar Suman.
Shreyasi Singh, an award-winning shooter who got elected from Jamui for a second consecutive term, was a new entrant into the cabinet.
Rama Nishad, wife of former Muzaffarpur MP Ajay Nishad, who had joined the BJP in the thick of elections and got elected from Aurai, has also been inducted into the state cabinet.
Another ninth-term MLA Bijendra Prasad Yadav, from the JD(U), was back in the state cabinet.
None of the inductees were from Union minister Chirag Paswan's LJPRV and Rajya Sabha MP Upendra Kushwaha's RLM, which have 19 and four berths, respectively.
In the outgoing government, the BJP had 15 ministers, JD(U) 12, including CM Nitish Kumar, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) had one, and one minister who was an Independent candidate.

JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar was elected leader of its legislature party in Patna, ahead of being chosen as NDA leader and taking oath as Bihar CM for a record 10th time on Thursday.

JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar was chosen as the leader of its legislature party during a meeting of newly elected MLAs in Bihar's capital Patna on Wednesday, state minister Shrawon Kumar said.
The decision was taken ahead of a meeting of NDA constituents, where Kumar is also expected to be chosen as the leader of the alliance in the state.
Talking to PTI, Shrawon Kumar said, &ldquo;Nitish Kumar has been chosen as JD(U)&rsquo;s legislature party leader by the newly elected MLAs."
The meeting was held at 'Samvad' located at the Chief Minister's Secretariat, and attended by all newly elected MLAs and 22 Legislative Council members of the party, he said.
"A proposal for Nitish Kumar as the JD(U) legislature party leader was moved by party leaders Vijay Choudhary and Umesh Kushwaha and was seconded by senior JD(U) leader Bijendra Yadav. Later, the proposal was also seconded by JD(U) working national president Sanjay Jha and Union minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh 'Lalan'," Shrawon Kumar said.
After he was elected JD(U) legislature party leader, "Nitish Kumar addressed all the party leaders who attended the meeting and asked them to work tirelessly for the welfare of the state", the JD(U) leader said.
Kumar, who will take oath as Bihar CM for a record 10th time at Patna's historic Gandhi Maidan on Thursday, is set to be elected the leader of the NDA during a meeting of the constituents of the five-party alliance, Shrawon Kumar said.
The JD(U) supremo will meet Governor Arif Mohammad Khan in the evening, requesting him to initiate the process for the formation of the new government, he said.
Kumar will also submit a letter of support from all NDA constituents to the governor for the formation of the new government, he said.
The current assembly will be dissolved on Wednesday, he said.
The NDA stormed back to power in Bihar, winning 202 seats in the 243-member assembly, with BJP bagging 89, JD(U) 85, LJP(RV) 19, HAM 5 and RLM 4.
In the run-up to the high-stakes polls, the 75-year-old leader doled out benefits like hike in social security pensions and stipends for 'Jeevika' and Asha and Anganwadi workers, besides the much-touted Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, as part of which over one crore women have got Rs 10,000 each in their bank accounts.
The longest serving chief minister of the state, nonetheless, remained unfazed by criticisms and also allegations of detractors that the BJP was out to do a "Shinde" to him, an allusion to his former Maharashtra counterpart Eknath Shinde, who was elbowed out after the saffron party outshone the Shiv Sena in assembly polls to the western state.
Born in 1951 in Bihar's Bakhtiyarpur, Nitish Kumar entered politics during the JP Movement. He joined the Janata Party and unsuccessfully contested his first assembly elections in 1977. His first electoral victory was in 1985.

The newly elected MLAs also chose Vijay Kumar Sinha as deputy leader of the BJP's legislature party, he said.
Maurya, who was present in the meeting, said, &ldquo;Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha were elected as the leader and deputy leader of the BJP&rsquo;s legislature party, respectively."&nbsp;
While Choudhary won from the Tarapur assembly seat, Sinha retained the Lakhisarai constituency in the recently concluded assembly polls.

The ruling NDA decimated the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar on Friday to retain power, reaffirming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's enduring appeal and dealing a body blow to the Congress and ally RJD.
The massive scale of the victory of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) can be gauged from the fact that its two main constituents&mdash;BJP and JD(U)&mdash;clocked a nearly 85 per cent strike rate in 101 seats each they had contested. The alliance secured a "200 paar" win for a three-fourths majority with the BJP emerging as the single largest party.
"The people of Bihar, with this massive victory and their unshakable confidence, have taken the state by storm (garda uda diya)," Prime Minister Modi told cheering party workers at the BJP headquarters in Delhi in the evening after accepting their greetings by waving a 'gamcha'.
While the BJP won 89 seats, up from 74 in 2020, Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal(U) tasted success in 85 constituencies, up from 43. The majority mark in the 243-member Assembly is 122.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) seat tally slipped to 25 from 75, and Congress bagged only six out of the 61 seats it contested, down from 19.
Hailing the NDA's huge win, Prime Minister Modi said it has given a new 'MY -- Mahila and Youth' formula with the people destroying the "communal MY formula of the jungle raj people".
In an apparent reference to the Muslim-Yadav support base of the RJD, Modi said that in Bihar some parties had formulated an "MY formula" but today's victory has given a new "positive MY -- Mahila and Youth" formula.
Overcoming anti-incumbency, Chief Minister Kumar thanked the people of the state for giving a "landslide" victory for the NDA.
"People of the state have expressed their confidence in our government by giving us a landslide mandate in the polls. For this, I bow to all the esteemed voters of the state, and express my heartfelt gratitude and thanks," Kumar wrote in a post on X. He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for his continuous support to the NDA government in the state.
A mix of state and central welfare schemes, including the monetary aid to women as part of the NDA's women-centric outreach, a constant reminder of the "jungle raj" during the RJD rule by Modi and other NDA campaigners, and the viability of a double-engine government appears to have largely contributed to their landslide victory.
Navigating the complex caste and community dynamics, NDA's wider caste alliance that dented the Mahagatbandhan's core vote bank, multiple welfare schemes targeted at Economically Backward Class (EBC) households, huge support from women who overwhelmingly supported the liquor ban, and from young voters also helped the five-party alliance.
One of the most striking features of this election was the extraordinary turnout of women voters.
The NDA also appeared to have done well in Muslim-dominated constituencies, signalling a possible change in voting pattern in these segments.
Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party (JSP), dubbed the 'X factor' in the Bihar polls and whose candidates were in the fray in all but three of the seats, came a cropper.
The party, floated by the former political strategist, failed to galvanise votes in its favour, despite a high-pitched campaign and raising pressing issues such as unemployment, migration and dearth of industries.
Celebrations erupted at the offices of the BJP and JD(U) in Patna, situated across the street from each other, with workers playing drums, bursting firecrackers and chanting slogans in praise of their respective leaders.
In front of the residence of the chief minister, the JD(U)'s 75-year-old national president, party workers posed for photographs holding aloft posters with the caption 'Tiger Abhi Zinda Hai'.
'Tiger Abhi Zinda Hai'&mdash;the title of a Bollywood blockbuster&mdash;neatly captured the gist of Chief Minister Kumar's "neither tired nor in a mood to retire" stance.
Shocking his rivals, Kumar, an electrical engineering graduate, had a point to prove in the latest assembly elections, which were held amid speculation of a fatigue factor, if not downright anti-incumbency, made worse by rumours of his indifferent health.
He is Bihar's longest serving chief minister, whilst also holding the post for his 9th term.
In the run-up to the high stakes polls, Kumar, who has earned the nickname of 'sushasan babu' (the man of good governance), aggressively doled out benefits like hike in social security pensions and stipends for Jeevika and Aasha and Aanganwadi workers, besides the much touted 'Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana', as part of which over one crore women have got Rs 10,000 each in their bank accounts.
Kumar was not in the electoral fray this time too as he has consistently taken the legislative council route to enter the state legislature.
BJP's performance would further cement its position as the numero uno political force in the country and also offset whatever setback that might have been caused by last year's Lok Sabha polls when the party had to rely on allies to remain in power in the Centre.
The NDA's tally in Bihar comes in the backdrop of the BJP's back-to-back stunning performances in Delhi, Maharashtra and Haryana. Last year, the BJP had won 132 of the 149 seats it had contested in Maharashtra.
The strong backing to Chief Minister Kumar by Modi and his ministers during their poll campaign also appeared to have paid rich dividends for the JD(U).
The LJP(RV), headed by Union minister Chirag Paswan, the self-declared "Hanuman" of the Prime Minister, which was left with only 28 candidates in the fray, with nomination papers of one of its nominees getting rejected during scrutiny, won 19 seats.
Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi's Hindustani Awam Morcha and Rajya Sabha MP Upendra Kushwah's Rashtriya Lok Morcha, both junior partners in the NDA, won five and four seats respectively. Both parties had contested six seats each. To consolidate Dalit support, the BJP banked on its two key allies&mdash;Manjhi and Paswan.
The Mahagathbandhan, which includes the RJD, the Congress and three Left parties, faced a crushing defeat, notwithstanding surveys and opinion polls showing its Chief Ministerial candidate Tejashwi Yadav as the most preferred leader for the top post.
Yadav, who according to Prime Minister Modi was declared a chief ministerial candidate after the RJD put a "katta" on the head of its alliance partners, was trailing initially before he recovered ground in Raghopur, the RJD stronghold. He defeated BJP candidate Satish Kumar by 14,532 votes.
Mahagatbahndhan also struggled to retain its strongholds. The Muslim and Yadav (M-Y) combination traditionally formed the bedrock of the RJD's support base in Bihar.
It was an embarrassing loss of face for the Congress, often seen as a "weak link" in the INDIA bloc. Rahul Gandhi's poll campaign against the BJP that revolved around his "Vote Chori" (vote theft) allegations failed to garner any support.
Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owais's AIMIM, which has often been accused of being a "B-team" of the BJP, won five seats. The party had contested 32 seats.
Indian Inclusive Party got one seat with its Saharsa candidate Indrajeet Prasad Gupta defeating BJP's Alok Ranjan.
The NDA's victory in the Bihar polls, which were held in two phases amid alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls by the Election Commission, is also significant as many see it as a prelude to assembly polls in West Bengal and Assam, scheduled to be held in the next six months.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday termed the NDA's landslide win in the Bihar assembly elections as a victory of good governance, development and the spirit of public welfare and social justice.
In a series of posts on X, Modi also congratulated the BJP's alliance partners -- Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, LJP-RV supremo Chirag Paswan, HAM leader Jitan Ram Manjhi and RLM chief Upendra Kushwaha.
"Deepest gratitude to my family members of Bihar, who have blessed the NDA with a historic and unprecedented victory in the 2025 assembly elections," Modi said.

The prime minister said the resounding public mandate will empower the NDA to serve the people and work with new resolve for Bihar.
The NDA comprising BJP, JD(U) and other parties were on course for a landslide victory in the Bihar assembly elections by taking the lead in 204 seats in the 243-member House.
The opposition grand alliance of the RJD, Congress and Left parties could manage to take the lead in 33 seats, 81 fewer than what it had bagged in the 2020 elections.
"The NDA has ensured all-round development of the state. The people have given us a massive majority after witnessing our track record and our vision to take the state to new heights," Modi said.
"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ji and our NDA family members Chirag Paswan ji, Jitan Ram Manjhi ji and Upendra Kushwaha ji for this resounding victory," he said.
The prime minister also thanked every NDA worker who worked tirelessly and took the ruling alliance's development agenda to the people.
"I appreciate them from the bottom of my heart," he said.
"In the coming times, we will actively work towards the development of Bihar, giving a new identity to the infrastructure here and the culture of the state. We will ensure that the youth power and women's power here get ample opportunities for a prosperous life," Modi said.

He also said the Bihar election results followed the "pattern" of the 2024 Maharashtra assembly polls, in which the ruling Mahayuti alliance of BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP registered a thumping victory.
The BJP-led NDA appeared to register a landslide victory in Bihar, opening up impressive leads in more than 180 of the state's 243 assembly seats, with early trends also indicating that the saffron party was on track to post its biggest tally.
In a post on X, Raut claimed the results followed the "Maharashtra pattern", a reference to the 2024 election results where the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was wiped out.

HAM chief Jitan Ram Manjhi on Friday exuded confidence that the NDA will win more than 160 seats in the 243-member Bihar assembly polls and his party Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), as a constituent of the ruling alliance, will bag at least six constituencies.
The ruling NDA was leading in 166 seats, surpassing the majority mark of 122, according to the Election Commission.
The opposition INDIA bloc was way behind, leading only in 59 of the 243 seats in the Bihar assembly. The tally is likely to change with several rounds of counting still left.
"Poll results show more than 160 seats for the NDA. The HAM is ahead in four to five seats as of now, and we expect at least six seats," Manjhi told reporters.
He attributed the NDA's performance in the elections to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's good governance. The credit also goes to the Election Commission for free and fair elections, he said.
The BJP was leading in 72 assembly seats, its ally JD(U) in 71, the LJP(RV) in 18, the HAM (S) in four, and the RLM was ahead in one seat after the first few rounds of counting.
In the opposition bloc, the RJD was leading in 43 seats, the Congress in eight, the CPI (ML) Liberation in six, and the CPI and CPI(M) in one seat each.
The Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj Party and the Mukesh Sahani-helmed VIP are trailing in all the seats they have contested.

Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Ram on Friday raised doubts over the "integrity" of the counting process even as Election Commission trends placed the NDA comfortably ahead of the Mahagathbandhan.
The Election Commission's numbers delivered a sweeping early advantage to the ruling alliance. By late morning, the NDA had crossed the 166-seat mark, while the Mahagathbandhan lagged at 56, signalling a sharp tilt in favour of the BJP-led coalition.
Within the NDA, the JD(U) led in 75 seats, the BJP in 72, with allies LJP (RV) (18) and HAMS (5) adding heft to the front.
The Mahagathbandhan's early tally rested largely on the RJD's leads in 41 seats, followed by Congress at seven, Left partners CPI(ML)-Liberation (5) and CPI(M) and CPI in one each.
The tally is likely to change with several rounds of counting left.
Amid this shifting electoral map, Ram alleged "serious anomalies" in the counting process, claiming that the procedure had slowed abruptly in several centres after the initial rounds.
Accusing the administration of attempting to "steal votes", he claimed there were reports of "server vans" hovering around counting centres and "irregularities at booths." "When vote theft happens in Maharashtra and Haryana, why will people not suspect the same here? Especially the Opposition," he told PTI Video.
Ram argued that Bihar's electorate was showing "visible resentment" rooted in unemployment, paper leaks, lack of healthcare, and persistent distress migration. "Women don't want their husbands to go outside the state to earn. Youths are frustrated. The 20-year rule backed by the BJP has failed them," he added.
The Congress leader also echoed the RJD's warnings that any perceived wrongdoing could trigger unrest. "Voters know whom they pressed the button for. If the outcome doesn't match their expectation, anger is natural," he said.
Attacking Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Ram alleged that the BJP had "completely captured" him. "JD(U) leaders and workers are themselves unhappy. Even they know this government is on its way out. The public wants a government that delivers jobs, medicines, and dignity," he said.
Bihar Congress in-charge Krishna Allavaru, speaking to PTI Video, said the party would wait until the end of the day before commenting on the numbers. "These are only early trends. At the end of the day, the final numbers will speak," he said.
Asked about allegations of irregularities in the counting process, he said, "The Election Commission, the Prime Minister, and the Home Minister must assure the people that the process has been neutral and transparent. There are many questions, many pieces of evidence. They must clarify."

Expressing dissatisfaction over the seat-sharing arrangement within the ruling NDA in Bihar ahead of the assembly polls, Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) chief and Rajya Sabha MP Upendra Kushwaha on Wednesday said, "This time, nothing is well in NDA."&nbsp;
Kuswaha, who left for Delhi on Wednesday to meet senior BJP leaders, told reporters at the airport that "Everything will be fine. With this hope and belief, we are going to Delhi."&nbsp;
According to party insiders, Kushwaha is not happy with the six seats allotted to his party. He is also not happy with the allocation of the Mahua seat to another NDA constituent, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), headed by Union Minister Chirag Paswan.
Efforts to convince Kushwaha by senior BJP leaders in Patna failed to make any headway.
Union Minister Nityanand Rai and other state BJP leaders met Kushwaha here on Tuesday evening.
The meeting continued till late at night, after which Kushwaha told reporters, "This time, nothing is well in NDA..
NDA leaders had on Tuesday claimed that seat allocation among alliance partners had been settled amicably and that discussions were in the final stages.
However, discontent among smaller allies surfaced soon after.
According to the agreed formula, the BJP and JD(U) will contest 101 seats each, LJP (Ram Vilas) 29 seats, while Hindustani Awami Morcha (HAM) and RLM will field candidates in six constituencies each.
Both HAM, led by Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, and RLM have voiced displeasure over the arrangement.
In an earlier post on X, Kushwaha apologised to his party workers after the formula was announced.
"Dear friends/colleagues, I seek your forgiveness. The number of seats which we have got is not as per your expectations. I understand that this decision will hurt those colleagues who aspired to be candidates of our party. Today, in many homes, food might not have been cooked. However, I am sure you all understand the constraints and limitations of both me and the party. I humbly request you to let the anger subside, and then you will yourself realise how appropriate or inappropriate the decision is. Time will tell the rest".

The NDA has nominated Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, a veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu’s OBC Gounder community, as its vice-presidential candidate. His election is virtually assured given the ruling alliance’s majority.

The NDA has nominated Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, a veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu&rsquo;s OBC Gounder community, as its vice-presidential candidate. His election is virtually assured given the ruling alliance&rsquo;s majority.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance on Sunday named Maharashtra Governor Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, a seasoned BJP leader belonging to a key OBC caste from Tamil Nadu with an RSS background, as its vice-presidential candidate.
BJP president J P Nadda made the announcement following a meeting of the party's parliamentary board, which included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and consultation with the party's allies.
Nadda appealed for unanimous election of Radhakrishnan (67), an OBC leader and two-time former member of Lok Sabha from Coimbatore, to the constitutional position, saying BJP leaders had spoken to the opposition parties over the last week and will reach out to them again.
Opposition leaders had told the BJP interlocutors that they can make up their mind only after being told of the ruling alliance's nominee, Nadda said, adding that his party will speak to them to reach a consensus over Radhakrishnan, whom he lauded as a "statesman".
In Radhakrishnan, the BJP has trusted a leader with a proven organsiational and ideological commitment, a far cry from its choice of his predecessor, Jagdeep Dhankhar.
In his reaction, Modi said on X, "Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji has distinguished himself with his dedication, humility and intellect. During the various positions he has held, he has always focused on community service and empowering the marginalised. He has done extensive work at the grassroots in Tamil Nadu." The prime minister expressed confidence that Radhakrishnan will be an inspiring vice-president, who is the ex officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha, and will play a crucial role in handling the government's agenda in Parliament.
Reacting to the announcement of his name as the NDA's vice-presidential nominee, Radhakrishnan thanked leaders from the BJP and its allies, including Modi.
"I am moved and touched beyond words for the confidence they have in me and giving me the opportunity to serve the Nation. I assure to work hard for the Nation until my last breath. Jai Hind," he said in a post on X.
Due to the comfortable majority of the BJP and its allies in the electoral college, comprising Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, Radhakrishnan&rsquo;s election is all but certain, and the party hopes that his elevation will help it make fresh inroads in Tamil Nadu, where elections are due next year.
Radhakrishnan belongs to the influential Gounder caste, an OBC community, in Tamil Nadu.
The elevation of Radhakrishnan will also bolster the BJP's counter-offensive against the pitch of the Congress and its allies to woo the OBCs on issues like caste census and their political representation in the run-up to the Bihar elections slated later this years.
The BJP has cited the highest-ever number of OBC ministers in the Union government besides Modi's own background as a member of a backward caste to emphasise its pro-backward credentials, and its choice of the vice-presidential candidate will further boost its firepower.
Nadda emphasised Radhakrishnan's nearly 40 years in public life, noting that he is well regarded in different parties and commands respect among various sections of society in his home state, where the BJP remains a junior player behind the two major Dravidian regional parties &ndash; the ruling DMK and the ADIMK.
"He is considered a statesman," Nadda said of the former Coimbatore MP, who was made the Jharkhand governor in 2023 and then shifted to Maharashtra in July 2024.
Unlike his predecessor Dhankhar, who was also a governor like him before being named as the NDA's vice-presidential nominee in 2022, Radhakrishnan has largely refrained from cultivating a public profile on controversial political issues as a governor.
However, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren had alleged last year that the Raj Bhavan was instrumental in his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate as part of a "conspiracy" by the Centre.
Radhakrishnan then held a press conference on February 8, 2024, to deny the charge, insisting that his office had followed every democratic norm.
With the NDA enjoying the support of at least 422 members in the electoral college of 781 MPs, Radhakrishnan&rsquo;s victory in any contest against the Opposition is a foregone conclusion. The majority mark is 391.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, sources said, will oversee the vice-presidential election, while Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju will be the polling agent.
The last date for filing nomination is August 21.
Chief ministers and deputy chief ministers of the BJP-led alliance will to be part of Radhakrishnan's nomination-filing exercise, other than the prime minister and Union ministers.
If the Opposition also names its candidate, the election will be held on September 9.
The NDA parliamentary party is expected to meet on August 19.
Making the announcement, Nadda said even as a governor, Radhakrishnan has been actively involved in issues related to social indicators, first in Jharkhand and then in Maharashtra.
As the chairman of the Coir Board, a statutory body established by the Union government for the promotion and development of the coir industry, he did commendable work and is a widely-travelled person with visits to nearly 124 countries, Nadda said.
Modi said Radhakrishnan has rich experience as an MP and governor of various states.
"His Parliamentary interventions were always incisive. During his gubernatorial tenures, he focused on addressing challenges faced by common citizens. These experiences ensured that he has vast knowledge of legislative and Constitutional matters," Modi said.
BJP's IT department head Amit Malviya said on X that Radhakrishnan would be only the second OBC leader ever to occupy the high office of president or vice-president, and the first from South India.
He would also be the third person from Tamil Nadu to rise to the position of vice-president, Malviya said.
In the past, Radhakrishnan served as the acting governor of Telangana and the acting lieutenant governor of Puducherry.
A former president of Tamil Nadu BJP, Radhakrishnan has been associated with the party since its early years and represented it in the Lok Sabha between 1998 and 2004.
The vice-presidential election has been necessitated following Dhankhar's sudden resignation on July 21, the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament.
Though Dhankhar cited health reasons as the cause of his resignation, it is believed that his souring ties with the government played a role in his abrupt departure.

Polling for the three-tier panchayat system is scheduled to be held in two phases -- on May 2 and May 7.
Sarma said April 18 was the last date for the withdrawal of nominations for the panchayat elections.
"As per reports received so far, the NDA has already secured 37 Zila Parishad (35 BJP and 2 AGP) and 288 Anchalik Panchayat (259 BJP and 29 AGP) seats unopposed," he claimed in a post on X, sharing a chart.
According to the chart he shared, Independents have secured 15 Anchalik Parishad seats uncontested, the Congress nine and the AIUDF one seat.
"This is a massive and unprecedented mandate in Assam's political history. It reflects the immense trust and overwhelming love that the people of Assam have for the NDA and for our Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji," Sarma said.
"We are confident that when the final election results are declared, this tally will grow even more impressive. The NDA is all set to sweep the Panchayat elections in Assam," he said.
An official of the State Election Commission said the tally of uncontested seats will be issued on Saturday.
Counting of votes for the panchayat elections will be held on May 11.
There are a total of 21,920 seats in the Gram Panchayats, 2,192 seats in the Anchalik Parishads and 397 in the Zilla Parishads.
Of the 34 districts in the state, panchayat polls are being held in 27 as the remaining seven are governed by autonomous councils.
A total of 1.80 crore people are eligible to vote in the panchayat polls.

One seat is held by BJP's Sushil Kumar Modi, who was earlier a deputy chief minister, and one with the Congress, held by its state unit president Akhilesh Prasad Singh.&nbsp;

Following Union minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar's attack on Congress, claiming that his father, K Subrahmanyam, was removed as Secretary, Defence Production by Indira Gandhi, Trinamool Congress leader Jawhar Sircar hit back. Members of both houses of Parliament and state legislature, belonging to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), converged here on Tuesday to attend a meeting at his official residence, amid speculations of a major political move by the veteran leader, senior party functionaries said.
The meeting is scheduled to commence at 11 AM.
While the outcome will be known once the meeting is over, more than one of the prospective attendees denied the party’s ties with the BJP having worsened to an extent to call for a realignment.
“Our party had held many such meetings of MPs and MLAs in the past. We have been told that the current meeting has been called to discuss organisational matters. Never heard about any major crisis in the NDA," said Ram Nath Thakur, a Rajya Sabha member, low key but known to enjoy proximity to the chief minister by virtue of being the son of late Karpoori Thakur, the latter's political mentor.
Another confidant of Kumar, Leshi Singh, who is an MLA and a minister in his cabinet, said, “I was away for the last four or five days but I have an idea of how things have been. There does not seem to be any major crisis facing the NDA government. It goes without saying, though, that the party will abide by any decision taken by the chief minister”.
Meanwhile, MLAs of the opposition RJD, the largest party in the state assembly, have also been commanded by their leader Tejashwi Yadav to remain present at a meeting which will be held at his mother Rabri Devi’s Circular Road bungalow, a stone’s throw from the CM’s Anney Marg residence.
Chetan Anand, a young RJD MLA who is serving his first term, said, "Rumours of political realignment have been afloat for a couple of years. Let us not make any rash assumptions. Once the party leadership takes any decision, it will be definitely made known to all."
