NCRB data: these 5 states reported most suicides in India in 2022

While these five states accounted for 49.3 per cent of all suicides, the remainder were in the rest of the 23 states and eight Union Territories.

Data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2022 showed that Madhya Pradesh accounted for 15,386 of the 1,70,924 suicides that took place across the country.
While the national average was 468 suicides per day, for MP it was 42 people ending their lives every day, or almost two per hour, as per NCRB data.
The NCRB, which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs, recently released its survey.
Maharashtra led with 22,746 suicides (13.3 per cent of total count), followed by 19,834 in Tamil Nadu (11.6 per cent), 15,386 in MP (9 per cent), 13,606 in Karnataka (8 per cent) and 12,669 in West Bengal (7.4 per cent), the NCRB data revealed.
While these states accounted for 49.3 per cent of all suicides, the remainder were in the rest of the 23 states and eight Union Territories.
Incidentally, Uttar Pradesh, with 17 per cent of the country's population, accounted for just 4.8 per cent of the suicides that took place in 2022.
It also showed that 59,087 people, comprising 38,259 men and 20,828 women, who ended their lives in the country were in the 18-30 age group, with 31.7 per cent people committing suicide due to family problems and 18.4 per cent due to illness.
In MP last year, Indore led with 746 suicides, followed by 527 in Bhopal, 307 in Gwalior and 213 in Jabalpur.
Pointing out that 31.7 per cent of the suicides took place due to family problems, Bhopal Police Commissioner HC Mishra told PTI this was mainly due to the weakening of the joint family system, lack of emotional bond and communication.
Youngsters, especially students were ending their lives due to lack of proper counselling as well as lack of communication in society, said Mishra, who has earlier served as commissioner of Indore, SP of Jabalpur and Gwalior.
Mishra, who as SP, Jabalpur started the suicide prevention helpline 'Sanjeevani' in 2014, said he found neglect of mental health was one of the reasons for the high number of suicides in the city, after which experts were asked to provide counselling and advice to people who contact the helpline.
Training police staff on issues of sensitivity and answering helpline calls properly resulted in the suicide numbers going down, he claimed.
Recalling an incident, Mishra, as SP in Jabalpur, received a call late at night from a station house officer who said he had a loaded pistol and was planning to end his life.
"I started talking to him, trying to tell him his act would have huge consequences. I recalled he had called me some time before and spoken about his jobless son, a daughter who had filed a domestic violence case against her husband, as well as his issues with his wife," Mishra said.
"The SHO told me he was considered worthless in the department, which was affecting his career prospect. I immediately gave him charge of a police station. I told him to prove people wrong. I continued to engage him in talks," he said.
In the meantime, Mishra said he asked the staff at his 'camp office' in his bungalow to alert the constables at the police station where this personnel was and asked them to cautiously take control of him when he walks out of his office since he had a loaded gun.
"I continued to talk to this personnel. Finally, he listened to me, opened the door, walked outside where waiting police staff took away his pistol. He was counselled by professionals later. I spoke to the then DGP and ensured his request for a transfer to Sagar, which is his hometown, at the fag end of his career was accepted," Mishra said.
The Sanjeevani helpline is now functional in Bhopal, Gwalior and Indore as well, he added.
Psychiatrist Dr Viabhav Dubey said communication gaps within the family as well as glorification of suicides in the media sometimes and incidents broadcast live on social media have also resulted in the numbers going up.
Citing the media coverage of the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, Dubey said it sometimes makes people think ending their lives is the easiest solution.
People are looking up to the digital world rather that talking to friends and family, he rued.
Seeing social media posts of people informing about purchasing homes, cars, of holidays abroad also increases frustration and despair among those who feel they are down and out, Dubey said.
"In my 25-year career, I am seeing a rise in the number of suicides in the last five years. If we don't take steps now, in 20 years we might see problems like loneliness etc which we are seeing in the west. This could take a heavy toll," he claimed.
People who rely on internet and social media for cure of illness instead of consulting doctors may also end their lives out of frustration if they don't get better for a long period, he added.&nbsp;

As per a report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), &nbsp;the national capital, Delhi, has experienced the most gruesome murder cases in 2022. NCRB revealed that 16 cases of murders arose out of love affairs in the city.
The cases include the sensational murder of Shraddha Walker, who was allegedly strangled and chopped into 35 pieces by her live-in partner Aftab Amin Poonawala, who suspected her of being involved with another man.&nbsp;
According to the NCRB data, Delhi recorded 501 cases of murder, and at least 13 of them were committed over illicit relationships, 54 in personal enmity, and 197 in family, property, and other disputes.
At least 35 murders took place over money, and one was over water. Two cases of murder emerged out of incidents of road rage, and three were due to gang rivalry.
At least 10 cases of murder were committed during dacoity and robbery bids in Delhi, the report said.
Also, human sacrifice became the cause of at least one murder case in the national capital.

The societal taboo against victims of rape is high already, in such a situation for women to come out against their own husbands becomes tougher. So as things stand today, what is the legal recourse women have against this violation of their bodily autonomy? Not great unfortunately. 
Though Domestic Violence Act includes sexual abuse as one of the definitions of Domestic violence, it is a civil law – which means the punishment for a crime of the same nature is not as stringent as that against rape.    
This can perhaps be explained by taking a look at the etymology of the word rape – it comes from the word ‘rapen’ which means to seize that which does not belong to you. But when women are seen as property of their husbands, then the premise of marital rape falls flat. A husband is not seizing anything, the woman belongs to him already. 
The Justice JS Verma committee report put this into words in a way that makes most sense - “the relationship between the accused and the complainant is not relevant to the enquiry into whether the complainant consented to the sexual activity and the fact that the accused and the victim are married or in another intimate relationship may not be regarded as a mitigating factor justifying lower sentences for rape.”

The cases of crimes against women in Delhi accounted for 32.20 per cent of total crimes in the category among all 19 metropolitan cities, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.
Delhi was followed by the financial capital Mumbai, which saw 5,543 such instances, and Bengaluru with 3,127 cases.
Mumbai and Bengaluru accounted for 12.76 per cent and 7.2 per cent of total crimes in 19 cities, respectively.
The national capital has also reported the highest number of cases of crimes against women in the categories related to kidnapping (3948), cruelty by husbands (4674) and girl child rapes (833) as compared to other metropolitan cities with over two million population in 2021.
On average, over two girls were raped every day in Delhi in 2021, the data showed.  The national capital registered 13,982 cases of crimes against women in 2021, while the total crimes in all 19 metropolitan cities were 43,414, according to the report.
The capital has registered 136 cases of dowry death in 2021, which is 36.26 per cent of total deaths due to the menace in 19 metropolitan cities.  The city also reported 3,948 cases of abduction and kidnapping of women, out of a total of 8,664 cases in all metropolitan cities.  
Delhi also reported 2,022 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage their modesty last year.  There were 1,357 reported cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (girl child victims only) in 2021, the NCRB said.  As many as 833 cases of girl child rape, the highest among the metropolitan cities, were reported in 2021, as per the data.

As many as 1.73 lakh people lost their lives in around 4.22 lakh traffic accidents in the country in 2021 with Uttar Pradesh reporting the highest number of deaths in such mishaps at 24,711 deaths followed by Tamil Nadu which recorded 16,685 deaths, according to the latest report by National Crime Report Bureau(NCRB).
The number of traffic accidents in the country increased from 3,68,828 in 2020 to 4,22,659 in 2021, the report added.&nbsp;
4,03,116 people died in road accidents, followed by 17,993 <a href="https://www.editorji.com/crime-news/railway-job-aspirant-removes-his-thumb-skin-puts-it-on-friend-s-hand-to-appear-for-exam-1661418393601">railway</a> accidents and 1,550 railway crossing accidents. They caused 1,55,622, 16,431 and 1,807 deaths respectively during 2021.
After UP and <a href="https://www.editorji.com/partner/news-minute/tamil-nadu-and-kerala-join-hands-to-treat-injured-elephant-1660729932032">Tamil Nadu</a>, Madhya Pradesh, <a href="https://www.editorji.com/crime-news/video-maharashtra-gangster-cuts-birthday-cake-in-police-van-1661146204810">Maharashtra</a> and Kerala reported the most number of accident deaths.&nbsp;
These three states accounted for 14.2 per cent, 9.6 percent and 9.5 percent of total deaths in traffic accidents respectively and collectively accounted for 33.3 per cent (57,842 out of 1,73,860) of total fatalities reported at all India level during 2021.

The percentage share of traffic accidental deaths in total deaths due to 'Other Causes' has decreased from 45.1 per cent in 2017 to 44.5 per cent in 2021.
The fatalities in road accidents have increased by 16.8 percent - from 1,33,201 in 2020 to 1,55,622 in 2021.
The NCRB report also said that the rate of deaths per thousand vehicles in 2021 increased from 0.45 in 2020 to 0.53 in 2021.

Amid a mounting Opposition attack on his government over the alleged gang-rape and death of a Dalit woman in Hathras, UP CM Yogi Adityanath on Sunday directed police to act in cases of crime against women and girls with full sensitivity. He also directed the police to act fast and seriously in cases pertaining to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, a government statement said.
