Surrounded by party workers, including 32 of NCP&rsquo;s 53 MLAs, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar on Wednesday reminded his 83-year-old uncle Sharad Pawar that it was time for him to retire.
"In BJP, leaders retire at 75, when are you going to stop,&rdquo; Ajit Pawar said, speaking at the meeting convened by him in suburban Bandra as a show of strength.
&ldquo;Everybody has his innings. The most productive years are from 25 to 75 years,&rdquo; 63-year-old Ajit Pawar said.
He also blamed Sharad Pawar for NCP losing out on the chance to have a chief minister in 2004. &ldquo;We had more MLAs than Congress in 2004, but our senior leader allowed Congress to bag the CM's post,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;For us, Saheb (Sharad Pawar) is a deity and we have deep respect for him,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;IAS officers retire at 60. Even in politics, BJP leaders retire at 75. You can see the example of L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi,&rdquo; Ajit Pawar said.
&ldquo;You are 83, aren't you going to stop? Give us your blessings and we will pray that you live a long life,&rdquo; Ajit Pawar said.&nbsp;

Day after Ajit Pawar defected and joined the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government along with eight MLA, Sharad Pawar's NCP has taken action against party leaders who attended Ajit Pawar's swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhawan on Sunday, as per reports.
As per India Today, Akola District President Vijay Deshmukh and Mumbai Division Working President Narendra Rane and state minister Shivajirao Garje have been expelled from the party for participating in Ajit Pawar's swearing-in.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Monday sacked the party's working president Praful Patel and Lok Sabha MP Sunil Tatkare, who have sided with Maharashtra deputy CM Ajit Pawar in his rebellion, for engaging in "anti-party&rdquo; activities.
The action comes a day after Ajit Pawar joined the Eknath Shinde-BJP government as deputy chief minister along with eight other NCP MLAs who were inducted as ministers. Tatkare's daughter Aditi was among the ministers who took oath on Sunday.
Sharad Pawar, in a tweet, said, "I, as the National President, of the Nationalist Congress Party, hereby order the removal of the names of Shri Sunil Tatkare and Shri Praful Patel from the Register of Members of NCP Party for anti-party activities.&rdquo; He tagged Patel, a Rajya Sabha MP who was appointed as NCP working president last month, and Tatkare in his tweet.&nbsp;

With NCP leader Hasan Mushrif jumping ship with Ajit Pawar to join the Eknath Shinde government, he has become the second Muslim to be inducted into the Maharashtra cabinet of which the BJP is also a part.&nbsp; Hasan Mushrif who hails from Kolhapur was facing searches by the Enforcement Directorate in Mumbai in connection with alleged irregularities in the functioning of a sugar factory and companies linked to his family.
In his pleas before the courts, Mushrif had said that the case against him was a motivated conspiracy. The other Muslim minister in the Shinde's Cabinet is Abdul Sattar.

On Thursday, Pawar said "certain things were done" after the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections to expose the BJP and show how far it can go to gain power.

With nine NCP leaders, including nephew Ajit Pawar, joining the Eknath Shinde government in Maharashtra on Sunday, party chief Sharad Pawar took a swipe at the ruling BJP, saying that the development was not a "googly" but a "robbery".
Ajit Pawar, who was Leader of the Opposition in the state Legislative Assembly, on Sunday, took oath as the deputy chief minister, while eight MLAs from his party, including some veteran leaders, were inducted as ministers in the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.
Addressing a press conference here over the developments, Pawar senior said, Ajit Pawar and other NCP MLAs joining the Shinde government was a robbery.
"...It is not googly, it is a robbery. It is not an easy thing. The allegations levelled by Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) against the party...Now (he) has done an important work of exonerating some of the leaders from those allegations," Pawar said.
He was replying to a query about whether the surprising move by nine NCP leaders was a game plan of the BJP or a googly that he talked about recently.
Over the past few days, Pawar and the BJP were engaged in a war of words over the events surrounding the short-lived government in 2019 in Maharashtra, in which Ajit Pawar had taken oath as the deputy CM, while BJP's Devendra Fadnavis as the chief minister.
On Thursday, Pawar said "certain things were done" after the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections to expose the BJP and show how far it can go to gain power.
He said his father-in-law (Test player Sadu Shinde) was a googly bowler, and he himself (Pawar) was the chairman of the ICC. "So, without playing cricket, I knew where and when to bowl a googly," the NCP chief said that day.
His statement was in reaction to the claim made by Fadnavis in an interview to a news channel that Pawar had agreed to form a government with the BJP in 2019, but the latter backed off after three-four days.
After Pawar's 'googly' remark, Maharashtra BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule took potshots at him saying that the NCP chief had hatched a political conspiracy in 2019 and tried to destroy Ajit Pawar's political career by making him part of that conspiracy.
Bawankule, however, said it was Pawar's "last googly".

Congress general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal made the announcement on Twitter and said "we are steadfast in our unwavering resolve to defeat the fascist and undemocratic forces".
In a tweet, Venugopal said, "After a hugely successful all-opposition meeting in Patna, we will be holding the next meeting in Bengaluru on 17 and 18 July 2023. We are steadfast in our unwavering resolve to defeat the fascist and undemocratic forces and present a bold vision to take the country forward." Earlier, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar had said the next opposition meet will be held in Bengaluru on July 13-14. Those dates were said to be clashing with the Assembly sessions in a few states.

Pawar said he would not fight over anyone saying anything by taking the NCP's name, but would go to people instead.
"Those who violated the party line and took oath, a decision has to be taken on them," he said.
He said some party leaders were nervous about probes by the Enforcement Directorate and named Ajit Pawar, Chhagan Bhujbal, Dilip Walse-Patil, Hasan Mushrif.

NCP leader Ajit Pawar, who took oath as the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, on Sunday said his party decided to become part of the Eknath Shinde government for the development of the country, and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
Maintaining that there was no split in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), he said they would contest all the future elections on the NCP's name and symbol.
All the elected representatives (of the party) have supported the decision to join the government, Pawar said.
Defending his decision to share power with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he said, "If we can go with the Shiv Sena, then we can go with the BJP as well. The same thing happened in Nagaland as well." "Overall and comprehensive development was taken into account. We have a vast experience of the administration, we can utilise it for the good," he said.
The cabinet portfolios will be announced in a couple of days and we will immediately start working on it, Pawar said.
