Chhattisgarh: Three Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces along the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border on Thursday, police said.
The gunfight took place at a forest in Karegutta hills in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district along the inter-state border in the morning when a joint team of security forces was out on an anti-Naxal operation, a senior police official said.
So far, bodies of three Naxalites have been recovered from the encounter site, and several other Maoists are also suspected to have been killed in the fierce gun battle, he said.
The operation, one of biggest counter-insurgency actions launched in Bastar region, involved around 10,000 security personnel belonging to different units, including the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Bastar Fighters, Special Task Force (STF), all units of the state police, as well as the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and its elite Commando Battalions for Resolute Action (CoBRA), he said.
The Telangana police were also assisting in the operation, the official said.
The operation was launched on Monday based on inputs about the presence of senior cadres of battalion no. 1, the strongest military formation of Maoists, and Telangana state committee of Maoists, and it will last for several days, he said.
The area surrounded by the dense forests and series of hills is considered to be the base of Maoists' battalion no. 1, he added.

A gunfight broke out in the morning in the Abhujmad forest, where a joint team of security personnel was out on an anti-Naxalite operation.

Eight Naxalites and a jawan of the Special Task Force (STF) were killed in an encounter in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district on Saturday, police said.
Two other STF personnel sustained injuries in the incident, they said.
A huge cache of weapons and other materials belonging to Naxalites were recovered from the encounter site, they said.
The gunfight broke out in the morning in the forest of Abhujmad, where a joint team of security personnel from four districts &mdash; Narayanpur, Kanker, Dantewada and Kondagaon &mdash; was out on an anti-Naxalite operation, a senior police official in Raipur said.
The operation involving the personnel of the state police's District Reserve Guard (DRG) and STF, along with the 53rd battalion of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and 135th battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF), was launched on June 12 in the forests of Kutul, Farsebeda and Kodtameta villages, he said.
The exchange of fire broke out when security personnel were cordoning off the area, and it lasted for a long time, he said.
After guns fell silent, bodies of eight Naxalites were recovered from the site along with an Insas rifle, a .303 rifle, a barrel grenade launcher (BGL) and other weapons and Maoist-related materials, the official said.
"A jawan of the STF was martyred, and two others sustained injuries," he said.
The injured jawans were shifted to a local hospital and will be airlifted to Raipur for further treatment, he said.
As many as 131 Naxalites have been killed in separate encounters with security personnel in Bastar division, comprising Kanker, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Bastar, Bijapur, Dantewada and Sukma districts, so far this year, police said.
On June 5, six Naxalites were gunned down in an encounter in Narayanpur, while seven Naxalites were killed on the Narayanpur-Bijapur border on May 23.
At least 12 Naxalites died in an encounter in Bijapur on May 10, and 10 cadres, including three women, were neutralised along the border of Narayanpur and Kanker districts on April 30.
On April 16, 29 Naxalites were gunned down in an encounter with security forces in Kanker district, they said.

The .gunfight took place around 5.30 am in the forest at Kotmi, where the Naxals had gathered for a meeting, Gadchiroli&nbsp;DIG&nbsp;Sandeep Patil said.
&ldquo;Based on specific inputs, the police party, comprising C-60 commandos, had launched a search operation in the forest,&rdquo; he said.
However, the ultras spotted the police party and opened fire, following which the C-60 commandos retaliated, in which 13 Naxals were killed, he said.
The encounter lasted around an hour, after which the remaining Naxals escaped into the dense forest, Gadchiroli&nbsp;SP&nbsp;Ankit Goyal&nbsp;said.
Bodies of the Naxals have been recovered from the spot and a search operation in the area is still on, he said.

Sahu, in his written reply&nbsp;to a question by Congress MLA&nbsp;Dhanendra&nbsp;Sahu, also informed that 82 Naxals&nbsp;deaths were reported from Sukma&nbsp;district, which was the highest, followed by 46 in&nbsp;Bijapur&nbsp;and 30 in Dantewada.
