Nawaz Sharif sacrificed his ambition to become Pakistan's prime minister for a record fourth term and nominated his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif for the plum post as the powerful Army gave him two options either to choose the premiership or leave it to allow his daughter to become the chief minister of Punjab, according to party insiders.
The nomination of Shehbaz Sharif for the slot of prime minister by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supremo Nawaz Sharif has stirred quite a debate among the PML-N ranks who are questioning why the 74-year-old three-time premier was "sidelined" despite the earlier announcement on the premiership.
Sources in the PML-N told the Press Trust of India here that Nawaz Sharif decided to withdraw himself from the race for the prime minister's office for his daughter and political heir, Maryam Nawaz, 50.
"Nawaz Sharif could have become the prime minister to lead the coalition government for the fourth time but then his daughter would have no chance to become the Punjab chief minister. For the love of his daughter, Nawaz sacrificed his wish to become prime minister for the fourth time,&rdquo; a party insider said.
The sources said that Nawaz Sharif was given two choices by the military establishment after his party's poor performance in the February 8 elections.
The powerful Pakistan Army, which has ruled coup-prone Pakistan for more than half of its 75-plus years of existence, has wielded considerable power in matters of security and foreign policy.
"The first was to become premier of the coalition government in Islamabad and make his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif Punjab chief minister and the other was to leave the top post for Shehbaz and have his daughter Maryam accommodated as the Punjab chief minister. Nawaz chose the second," another source said.
The source said that since Shehbaz Sharif, 72, was a favourite of the military, Nawaz Sharif had to be sidelined by one excuse or another at the end of the day.
Since the PML-N failed to win a simple majority in the 266-member National Assembly, Shehbaz Sharif prevailed over his elder brother Nawaz Sharif in the race for the post of Prime Minister.
This week social media was also abuzz with the PML-N's decision to nominate Shehbaz Sharif as its prime ministerial candidate.
"Pakistan ko Nawaz do (Give Nawaz to Pakistan)" was one of the top trends on X in the country showing resentment over Shehbaz Sharif's nomination.
People in their posts on X asked whether Nawaz Sharif's political career is over.
Initially, the PML-N claimed Nawaz Sharif would be the party's pick for the top slot followed by a full-throttle media campaign in the lead-up to the general elections.
Maryam on Wednesday said her father's decision to withdraw himself from the top slot is related to the PML-N's not securing a clear majority in the polls.
To form a government, a party must win 133 seats out of 265 contested seats in the 266-member National Assembly.
Former prime minister Imran Khan's PTI-backed independent winners lead the lower house (National Assembly) with 92 seats followed by PML-N with 80, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari's Pakistan Peoples Party with 54 and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) with 17 seats.
Maryam is now set to become the first woman chief minister of Punjab, a crucial province of over 120 million people.
Former premier Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has alleged that Maryam would become the Chief Minister on its "stolen mandate" thus having no credibility of her selection.
On the other hand, Shehbaz Sharif is all set to form a six-party coalition to run the government early next month.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan&rsquo;s tally, the total number of general seats won by these six parties comes to 152, which shows they can easily achieve the minimum required number of 169 to form the government at the Centre after the addition of 60 women and 10 minority seats in their tally.
None of the three major parties, the PML-N, the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), or the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf have won the necessary seats in the February 8 general elections to secure a majority in the National Assembly and, therefore, will be unable to form a government on their own.
Pakistan recorded a 47.6 per cent voter turnout in the February 8 election, which was lower than the previous one in 2018 when 52.1 per cent of voters cast the ballot.&nbsp;

Pakistani media has reported that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have agreed to form a coalition government in the centre and Punjab province.
According to Geo News, former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif met PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto and former president Asif Ali Zardari, inviting them to work together for Pakistan.
It has been further claimed that both parties will finalise matters regarding the power-sharing formula, as to who will assume which role, in the next meeting. It comes at a time when the final results are still awaited. If the coalition talks succeed, then it is expected that three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif will once again assume the leadership role.
Currently, Imran Khan-backed candidates are leading in 100 seats, followed by PML-N in 71, PPP in 53 and MQM-P in 17.&nbsp;
On Friday, PML-N supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif invited all the political parties to form a coalition government to "save the country".
Addressing the supporters, he said, &ldquo;I understand, it is our duty to take the country out of the vortex; we invite everyone to join us to take Pakistan out of difficulties. Let&rsquo;s sit together, as everyone knows who has done what for the country,&rdquo; he said.
The three-time former premier said that all knew the PML-N&rsquo;s track record and "it is our duty to take this country out of the vortex".
&ldquo;We all respect the other parties&rsquo; mandate, whether it&rsquo;s a party or independent people. We invite them to come and sit with us to get Pakistan out of difficulties, as our agenda is a prosperous Pakistan,&rdquo; he said, according to Geo News.
Nawaz said the PML-N got the mandate and knew how to take the country out of the economic difficulties and fix the economy.

Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's party-backed independent candidates on Friday won 55 out of the 139 National Assembly results announced by the election commission following unusual delays, leading to allegations of vote rigging.
Votes are still being counted in Pakistan after Thursday's general election which was marred by allegations of rigging, sporadic violence and a countrywide mobile phone shutdown.
There were dozens of parties in the fray but the main contest was among Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), whose candidates are running as independents, former three-time premier Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
To form a government, a party must win 133 seats out of 265 in the National Assembly. Election to one seat was postponed after the death of a candidate.
Overall, 169 seats are needed to secure a simple majority out of its total 336 seats, which include the reserved slots for women and minorities.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) data shows that results of 139 constituencies have been declared, which include 55 independents (mostly supported by PTI), PML-N 43, PPP 35 and other seats going to smaller parties.
Pakistan's authorities were earlier moving at a snail's pace to announce the election results that in a surprising development showed disqualified ex-prime minister Khan's PTI supported independent candidates leading the show.
The ECP started updating results at a faster pace after facing a barrage of criticism by the parties, especially the PTI which accused that its mandate was being stolen.
Khan, 71, a cricketer-turned-politician and the founding chairman of the PTI, is behind bars and barred from contesting.
PTI candidates are running as independents after they were not allowed to use the party symbol - a cricket bat.
The big names who won included PML-N top leaders, including former premier Sharif who won by a big margin by getting 171,024 votes against PTI-backed independent Dr Yasmin Rashid who polled 115,043.
His younger brother and former premier Shehbaz Sharif also won, in addition to his son Hamza Shehbaz and Sharif&rsquo;s daughter Maryam Nawaz. All four family members scored victories from Lahore, their home and party&rsquo;s stronghold.
PTI leader Gohar Ali Khan won NA-10 in the Buner area of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa with 110,023 votes, according to the ECP. He defeated Awami National Party candidate Abdul Rauf who came second with 30,302 votes. PTI&rsquo;s former speaker National Assembly Asad Qaisar also won.
PPP leaders Asif Ali Zardari and his son party chief Bilawal were leading in their constituencies.
The prominent losers in the elections were PTI's former leader and defence minister Pervaiz Khattak.
As far as the provincial assemblies were concerned, the ECP data showed results of 53 constituencies of the Sindh Assembly, with the PPP succeeding in 45 constituencies while independent candidates won only four constituencies.
The Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) won two seats, and Jamaat-e-Islami and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) one each.
According to the results of 50 constituencies of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, 45 PTI-backed independent candidates secured victories.
In the Punjab Assembly, PML-N has won 39 seats, independent candidates have won 33 seats and Muslim League-Q has won two seats.
Similarly, the results of 6 constituencies of the Balochistan Assembly have been received so far where PML-N and Balochistan National Party (BNP) Awami have been successful in one seat each. In Balochistan, JUI-F won three seats while PPP won one seat.
Unofficial result trends being aired on the television channels showed the PTI-backed candidates having upstaged their rivals in many National and Provincial Assembly seats.
The polling ended at 5 pm on Thursday but the first official result was announced 10 hours later at 3 am on Friday, irking many about the delay and giving fuel to the rumour mills to indulge speculation of foul play to manipulate the outcome.
PTI claimed that it won the elections while alleging that results were being delayed to rig the outcome.
In a statement on X from the PTI official handle, the party stated that it won more than 150 NA seats out of 265 open for contest as per the data received in Form 45s, which are the primary source of election results at the lowest level and show the votes for each candidate at each polling station.
&ldquo;Copies of these forms have been collected by PTI candidates' polling agents, which show them winning by a large majority. According to independent reports, PTI has won well over 150 National Assembly seats &amp; is in a solid position to form government in Federal, Punjab &amp; KP (Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa), with a clear majority,&rdquo; it stated.
&ldquo;However, manipulation of the results in the late hours of the night is an utter disgrace &amp; a brazen theft of the nation&rsquo;s mandate. The people of Pakistan vehemently reject the rigged results. The world is watching,&rdquo; it asserted.
In another statement, PTI alleged that its mandate was being stolen.
&ldquo;Let the world know that the clear and overwhelming mandate of the people of Pakistan is being stolen. Despite unprecedented pre-poll rigging &amp; oppression, there was a record, massive turnout on polling day,&rdquo; it stated.
The party said that every independent candidate backed by it was winning by a landslide.
It also said that Returning Officers are now manipulating the results using Form 47, which is a summary of Form 45 from each polling station.
&ldquo;Furthermore, there are reports of the polling agents getting abducted &amp; forced to sign fake Form 45s,&rdquo; it said.
It also referred to unspecified reports to claim that &ldquo;PTI nominated candidates (were) losing suddenly in various constituencies now, after they had already won by a clear majority&rdquo;.
In another statement, the party asked PML-N leader Sharif, who was the favourite to win as he was backed by the powerful Army, to concede defeat.
&ldquo;Show some grace @NawazSharifMNS, accept the defeat! The people of Pakistan will never accept you. This is a golden opportunity to regain some credibility as a Democrat. Daylight robbery is going to be rejected massively by Pakistan!&rdquo; it said in a statement on X.
The PML-N has countered the PTI claim about results and said that it was winning.
It said Sharif will deliver a "victory speech" after receiving the final results of the 2024 general elections, claiming that it is in contact with the independent candidates &mdash; mostly supported by PTI.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, PML-N Chief Organiser Maryam wrote: "As opposed to the false perception deliberately built by a section of media last night, PML-N, Alhamdulillah emerging as the single largest party in the centre and Punjab.
"Some results awaited. MNS will head to PML-N HQ for the victory speech as soon as the final results are received. Insha&rsquo;Allah. Stay tuned," she said.
On the other hand, PML-N leader Ishaq Dar said that the independent candidates, who are emerging victorious in the 2024 general elections, are in contact with the party.
"The independents have contacted us and they will join any party in the next 72 hours as per the Constitution," said the former finance minister.
He added: "If independents did not join any political party then they will lose reserved seats. The independents are not even close to PML-N's success in Punjab." The caretaker Interior Ministry has said that it had reviewed the media and the public&rsquo;s concerns about the late processing of the results and attributed it to &ldquo;lack of communication, which was the outcome of mobile services suspension taken to ensure a peaceful election process.&rdquo; The long delay in the announcement of results by the ECP created a lot of confusion.
Karachi, the biggest city in Pakistan, witnessed the most confusion when the Muttahida Qaumi Movement claimed it had already won 18 out of the 22 National Assembly seats from the city but this is yet to be verified.
Their rival parties the Jamaat-e-Islami and PPP both negated the MQM claim.
Earlier, PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Khan in a statement also claimed that the PTI has won over 150 National Assembly seats and is in a position to form governments in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. He urged the ECP to announce all results without any further delay. The excruciating delay in announcing the results pushed parties to the edge, with allegations of fraud being hurled along with demands for early results.&nbsp;

'Neither India nor US': Nawaz targets Pakistan army, says 'we shot ourselves in our own foot'

73-year-old Nawaz Sharif who is aiming to be the next Prime Minister, castigated the judges for legitimising military dictators.

Pakistan&rsquo;s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said neither India nor the US were behind the cash-strapped country's miseries but "we shot ourselves in our own foot", indirectly referring to the powerful military establishment for its woes.
During a conversation with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) ticket aspirants here, the party supremo, who is eying to become prime minister for a record fourth time, pointed out that he was ousted from power three times in 1993, 1999 and 2017.
&ldquo;Today where Pakistan has reached (in terms of the state of the economy) this is not done by India, the US or even Afghanistan. In fact, we shot ourselves in our own foot...they (a reference to the military) imposed a selected (government) on this nation by rigging the 2018 polls that led to the sufferings of the people and downfall of the economy,&rdquo; Sharif said.
The 73-year-old leader castigated the judges for legitimising military dictators.
&ldquo;The judges garland them (military dictators) and legitimise their rule when they break the Constitution. When it comes to a prime minister the judges stamp his ouster. The judges also approve the act of dissolution of the parliament...why?&rdquo; he asked.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supremo lashed out at former ISI chief Gen Faiz Hamid for his role in ousting him from power in 2017. &ldquo;A case has been opened in the Supreme Court against those (Faiz Hamid and others) who had said that if Nawaz came out of jail their two-year hard work would be wasted,&rdquo; he said.
The PML-N leader, who returned to the country from London in October ending a four-year-long self-imposed exile, is the only Pakistani politician who became the prime minister of the coup-prone country for a record three times.
On Monday, Nawaz said that in 1999, "I was prime minister in the morning and in the evening I was declared a hijacker. Similarly in 2017, I was ousted from power for not taking salary from my son." "They (military establishment) made this decision as they wanted to bring their selected man into power,&rdquo; he said, referring to his arch-rival Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supremo Imran Khan.
In a televised address to the nation on Thursday last, the three-time former prime minister blamed the military establishment of 2014-17 for forcing senior judges to remove him from power.
"They (a reference to the military establishment) visited the residences of senior judges and threatened them. They achieved the required court verdicts against me through coercion," he said.
Last week, Sharif was acquitted in the Al-Azizia Steel mill corruption case. He has already been acquitted in the Avenfield graft case in which he was convicted in July 2018 and sentenced to ten years in Jail. He also got relief in the Flagship corruption case.&nbsp;

After returning to Pakistan from a self imposed exile, former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has claimed that he was offered huge sum by former US President Bill Clinton to not conducted nuclear tests after India conducted one in 1998.&nbsp;

Hours after his homecoming, Pakistan's former prime minister Nawaz Sharif highlighted the achievements of his tenure and recalled how he gave a "befitting reply" to India's atomic explosion by conducting nuclear tests in 1998 despite being offered USD 5 billion by then US president Bill Clinton not to do so.
Sharif, 73, returned home on a special flight from Dubai, ending a four-year self-imposed exile in the UK, to head his party and try to secure a record fourth term in the general elections expected to be held in January.
Wearing a light blue kurta pyjama, a maroon muffler and a black coat, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo flew in from Dubai to Islamabad on the 'Umeed-e-Pakistan' chartered plane at around 1:30 pm local time.
He reached Lahore, considered a stronghold of his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, to address a massive rally, &ldquo;I am meeting you today after several years, but my relationship of love with you is the same. There is no difference in this relationship,&rdquo; he told the cheering crowd. &ldquo;The love I am seeing in your eyes, I am proud of it.&rdquo; Sharif recalled the huge pressure he faced from foreign governments in 1998 when Pakistan wanted to respond to India's nuclear test.
&ldquo;There will be record present in the Foreign Office that Clinton offered me USD 5 billion [&hellip;] this happened in 1999...I could have been offered USD 1 billion too, but I was born from the land of Pakistan and it did not give me permission to accept what is against Pakistan&rsquo;s favour.
&ldquo;Tell me, if someone else would have been in my place, you know who, could he have said this in front of the American president," he said, taking a dig at his main rival Imran Khan.
"We conducted the atomic test and gave India a befitting reply for conducting nuclear tests," he said in his nearly 60-minute speech at the PML-N rally at the Minar-e-Pakistan.
"So, do we get punished for this? Are verdicts announced against us for this reason?&rdquo; he said.
Sharif said he never betrayed his supporters nor did he shy from any kind of sacrifice. He recalled how fake cases were framed against him, his daughter and his party leaders. &ldquo;But no one abandoned the PML-N flag.&rdquo; &ldquo;Tell me, who are they who separated Nawaz Sharif from his nation? We are those who built Pakistan. We made Pakistan an atomic power. We brought an end to load-shedding.&rdquo; He compared how roti costs way higher today than when he was in power. &ldquo;Was I ousted for this reason? What is this decision? You are the public, you tell, do you agree with this decision?&rdquo; The PML-N supremo lamented how the country was in a dire state today but at the same time vowed to redirect Pakistan to the path of growth.

Three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif arrived back in Pakistan Saturday after four years of self-imposed exile, primed to make a political comeback ahead of elections.
The South Asian nation is facing overlapping security, economic and political crises ahead of polls already pushed back to January 2024, with Sharif's primary opponent, the fiercely popular Imran Khan, languishing in jail.
Sharif spent the past several days in Dubai and left on a chartered flight packed with journalists, touching down in the capital Islamabad around 1:30 pm (0830 GMT) according to local media.
"We are completely ready for elections," he told reporters before his flight took off.
"Our country which should have been at the heights of prosperity has really gone backwards," he said. "How did we get here? Why did it come to this?"

When asked if he held Gen Bajwa and Gen Hamid responsible for the state of the country, he said: &ldquo;The reality is before everyone. Now no name or face is hidden. It started with protests outside the UK residence of former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.&nbsp;The protests were conducted by supporters of Imran Khan's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf, or PTI.
Subsequently, supporters of Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party, or PML-N, reached Jemima Goldsmith's residence to stage a counter-protest.
Jemima took a jibe at Imran Khan's slogan of 'Naya Pakistan', or New Pakistan, with the hashtag 'Purana Pakistan', or Old Pakistan.&nbsp;She said that there were protests outside her house, her children were being targeted, and she was facing anti-Semitic abuse on social media.
Jemima also claimed that protestors gathered outside her 88-year-old mother's house, and threatened to enter Jemima's bedroom.
The protests have been sparked by Imran Khan's ouster as Pakistan PM after a no-confidence motion in the Pakistan National Assembly.
Imran Khan and Jemima Goldsmith were married from 1995 to 2004.&nbsp;They have two children,&nbsp;Qasim and Sulaiman.&nbsp;Jemima is the daughter of billionaire James Goldsmith, and her brother is a UK minister.

a fresh case was approved against Sharif along with former foreign secretary Aizaz Chaudhry, former Intelligence Bureau chief Aftab Sultan Sultan and Sharif&rsquo;s ex-personal secretary Fawad Hasan Fawad for &ldquo;illegally&rdquo; purchasing 73 high-security vehicles for the security of foreign dignitaries.
A total of 11 cases were approved at NAB&rsquo;s Executive Board Meeting on Thursday.
