Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday unfurled the national flag at the historic clock tower of Lal Chowk here as part of the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra', amid stringent security measures usually reserved for a prime ministerial visit.
Taking a 30-minute break from the Kanyakumari to Kashmir foot march at Sonawar, Gandhi drove to the Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters on Maulana Azad Road before heading to the clock tower, locally known as 'Ghanta Ghar', to unfurl the tricolour.
Gandhi was accompanied by his sister and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and party leaders from Jammu and Kashmir for the flag hoisting.
The security for the 10-minute event was at its peak as all roads leading to Lal Chowk had been sealed off from Saturday night and no vehicular movement was allowed.
Shops, business establishments and the weekly flea market were closed as part of the security drill for the flag unfurling by the former Congress president.&nbsp;

On the day of mourning, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India on all buildings where the National Flag is flown regularly.

As India observes one-day state mourning as a mark of respect to Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8, the national flags at all government buildings including Red Fort and Rashtrapati Bhavan fly at half-mast on Sunday.
Queen Elizabeth II, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland breathed her last in Scotland.
"As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the Government of India has decided that there will be one day of State Mourning on September 11th throughout India," reads a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
On the day of mourning, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India on all buildings where the National Flag is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment on the day.
People in India also paid respects to Queen Elizabeth II who became the UK's longest-serving monarch in 2015, when she surpassed the record of Queen Victoria, who had ruled from 1837 to 1901.
"We came for a visit here. I like Queen very much but it was unfortunate that we won't be able to see her anymore. We respect the Royal Family and our prayers are with the family in this difficult time. We congratulate and extend best wishes to the new King Charles III," said a woman from Kerala, who came to visit Delhi.
"We want to give respect to the Queen because she has done many things for India. India and UK has a strong relationship for many years and to continue this we should give respect to the Queen," said a local resident.
"We all should mourn the demise of Queen Elizabeth because she has contributed in the formation of our Constitution. We support the government decision to observe state mourning for Queen," said another resident.
Another person, who was near the Parliament, hailed the Modi government for observing one-day state mourning.
"This is the great decision taken by the Modi government, after all, she was the head of the Commonwealth nations. The entire world saw her as the mother patriarch," he said.
Condolences poured in from around the world following the demise of the 96-year-old monarch.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered her as a "stalwart of our times", saying she "provided inspiring leadership to her nation and people" and "personified dignity and decency in public life".

Buckingham palace announced she died at Balmoral Castle where members of the royal family had rushed to her side after her health took a turn for the worse.
The Queen had been suffering from what Buckingham Palace called "episodic mobility problems" since the end of last year. After her coffin is brought back to London, the Queen will lie in state in Westminster Hall for about four days before her funeral.
A period of royal mourning, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, will be observed from now until seven days after the Queen's funeral on September 19.&nbsp;
Royal mourning will be observed by members of the Royal Family, Royal Household staff and representatives of the Royal Household on official duties, together with troops committed to ceremonial duties, the Royal Family said in a statement.
Flags at Royal residences were half-masted on Thursday and will remain half-masted until 0800 hrs on the morning after the final day of royal mourning. The half-masting of flags at Royal residences does not apply to the Royal Standard and the Royal Standard in Scotland when the King is in residence, as they are always flown at full mast.
As the longest-serving monarch of the UK, Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday her seven-decade-long reign came to an end. It has triggered questions regarding further proceedings and the transition of powers.
According to a professor of British and Commonwealth history at the University of London, Philip Murphy, the Whitehall started the planning process about what would happen when the Queen dies from the time she became one, New York Times reported.
Lastly, Charles will take the Coronation Oath following which a proclamation will be read, declaring the reign of the new king, the New York Times reported.
The UK authorities had devised Operation London Bridge to manage events during the first 10 days between the Queen's death and the funeral. They had thought of Operation Unicorn in case the queen died in Scotland.

She alleged that Kashmiris were threatened with consequences and made to hoist the national flag on Independence Day by the J&amp;K administration.

"Lest we forget, people of J&amp;K accepted Indian flag in October 1947. But on certain conditions &amp; constitutional guarantees like their own flag &amp; a separate constitution way before BJP&rsquo;s ideological parent - the RSS accepted it," Mehbooba said in a series of tweets on Independence Day.
She posted a photograph from the 1950s showing India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru addressing a gathering in Srinagar's Lal Chowk.
"Jawahar Lal Nehru standing tall between two flags, the Indian national flag &amp; J&amp;Ks state flag adopted constitutionally in 1952 &amp; bulldozed in 2019 to fulfil BJPs divisive agenda. Now, every foundational value that the Indian flag stands for too lies in peril," she said.
She questioned the claims of the Jammu and Kashmir administration that scores of Kashmiris had hoisted the national flag on the occasion of the 76th Independence Day.
The former chief minister, "JK admin shamelessly boasts about Kashmiris hoisting Indian flag. Truth is they were threatened to do so or else face the consequences. Post 75 years of accession, GOI used all the might at its disposal to force people here to join its charade of pseudo &amp; monetised patriotism," she wrote and posted a video in support of her allegations.&nbsp;

Time and again there have been instances where people unintentionally got in trouble for wearing tricolour in the spirit of patriotism.&nbsp;
Back in 2014, Bollywood actor Mallika Sherawat was booked for disrespecting the national flag. She had wrapped a tricolour on her body for a movie poster. In 2017, Priyanka Chopra was also brutally trolled on the Internet when she chose to wear a tricolour scarf to celebrate her love for the nation.&nbsp;
Later, in 2020 after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, people started selling and wearing tricolour masks around Independence Day. This was greatly opposed by the Indian policymakers and such masks were banned across the country.
So, what does the law say about wearing the three colours as a part of the outfit?&nbsp;
In 2005, the Lok Sabha passed a bill that allowed Indian citizens to wear the tricolour as part of their attire, if worn respectably.&nbsp;
As per the law, it is illegal to wear the tricolour anywhere below the waist and it cannot be used in items of daily use such as cushions, handkerchiefs and undergarments. Offence related to disobeying the code could lead to imprisonment of minimum one year.
So, before choosing your Independence Day outfit this year, remember that while it is not entirely illegal to wear the tricolours, it is important to do so with reverence.&nbsp;
You can try out a tricoloured t-shirt, saree, dupatta, or even incorporate it in accessories like a turban, earrings and bangles to showcase your love for the country. You can also wear the tricolour in any form above the waist without the Ashoka Chakra as it will not be considered offensive.&nbsp;
