Cinema veteran Naseeruddin Shah on Monday defended Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh amid backlash over Pakistani actor Hania Aamir's role in "Sardaar Ji 3", saying casting is not the actor-musician&rsquo;s responsibility.
The row began last week after Dosanjh shared the trailer of "Sardaar Ji 3", which made its debut in overseas territories on June 27 and skipped release in India.
Many social media users have called for a ban on Dosanjh, while trade unions like the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) and the Federation of Western lndia Cine Employees (FWICE) have criticised the Punjabi actor-musician for collaborating with Aamir in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack.
Shah, who will feature alongside Dosanjh in filmmaker Imtiaz Ali's next film, shared a post on his official Facebook page, saying that he firmly stands with the actor on the issue.
The veteran actor, known for taking a stand on pertinent issues, said if someone has to be blamed for casting Aamir in the movie, then it should be the film's director.
"I STAND FIRMLY WITH DILJIT. The dirty tricks deptt of the Jumla Party has been awaiting a chance to attack him. They think they&rsquo;ve got it at last. He was not responsible for the casting of the film; the director was.
"But no one knows who he is, whereas Diljit is known the world over, and he agreed to the cast because his mind is not poisoned," Shah wrote.
"Sardaar Ji 3" is helmed by Amar Hundal and also stars Neeru Bajwa.
Shah further said he has close relatives and friends in Pakistan and no one can stop him from meeting them.
&ldquo;What these goons want is to put an end to personal interaction between the people of India and Pakistan. I have close relatives and some dear friends there and no one can stop me from meeting them or sending them love whenever I feel like it. And my response to those who will say 'Go to Pakistan' is 'GO TO KAILASA'," he wrote.
Imtiaz Ali, who earlier directed Dosanjh in the critically-acclaimed 2024 movie "Amar Singh Chamkila", came out in support of the actor at an event last week.
"Since I know Diljit, I can say that us mein deshbhakti ka jazbaa poora bhara hua hai (He is a patriot at heart). He is a son of the soil. You can see at all his concerts, he shows up with the Indian flag.
"He is not a guy who fakes things... No one asked him to do it. At the end of all his concerts, he says, "Main hoon Punjab", with the Indian flag. I don't know the details, but casting someone isn't the decision of the actor. I don't know how it went, but I know that uske andar desh prem bahut zyada hai (He loves his country too much)," Ali said.
In an interview with the BBC Asian Network last week, Dosanjh defended the decision to release "Sardaar Ji 3" in overseas territories. He also said when he signed the movie, there was no trouble between India and Pakistan.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. In retaliation, the Indian armed forces carried out strikes on nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on May 7, in an operation codenamed Operation Sindoor.
In the aftermath, social media accounts of many Pakistani actors, including Aamir, Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Ali Zafar, Atif Aslam and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, were withheld in India.
Many trade organisations also reiterated their call for a ban on Pakistani artists in the Indian film industry.

Renowned actor Naseeruddin Shah, in a recent interview, confessed that he found it difficult to watch blockbusters like &lsquo;RRR&rsquo; and &lsquo;Pushpa&rsquo;.
Expressing his perspective on these films, Naseeruddin said, &lsquo;I am pretty sure because I have great faith in the younger generation and I think that they are far more evolved, far more informed and far more savvy than we were. Apart from the thrill, I can&rsquo;t imagine what else one gets from watching such films. I tried to watch RRR, but I couldn&rsquo;t. I tried to watch Pushpa, but I couldn&rsquo;t. Although I did watch a Mani Ratnam film, completely, because he is a very capable filmmaker and does not have an agenda. And I can&rsquo;t imagine besides the thrill or feeding the emotions hidden inside you. There is a sense of happiness that often lingers for several days after watching. I can&rsquo;t imagine. Main aisi films dekhne kabhi na jaaun.&rsquo;
He also shared his thoughts on the glorification of hyper-masculinity in Bollywood films.

All superheroes, now in America, this Marvel universe is thriving, and it&rsquo;s happening here too. But alongside, films like A Wednesday also succeed, which don&rsquo;t have a hypermasculine hero. Granted, the premise of that film is completely impossible. So, that character somehow falls into the hero category because what he does, it&rsquo;s not possible for anyone to do. But people overlook that, because he provides them with a thrill. So I suppose this need to receive a thrill is there and will always be there. But the acceptance of smaller films like those made by Anurag, like Ramprasad Ki Terhvi, like Gulmohar, I think these kinds of sensitive movies will find their place as well.&rsquo;

Naseeruddin Shah, is all set to portray the role of King Akbar in the upcoming Zee5 original series 'Taj: Divided By Blood'. The series will be a depiction of the 'inner workings and the succession drama' that played in the Mughal empire. Now, in his latest interview, the veteran actor has said that there&rsquo;s nothing like objective history, so its depiction in books or in cinema will always be difficult.
Speaking with indianexpress.com, the actor talked about the difficulties faced during the making and showcase of a historical project in today&rsquo;s world. Shah said, &lsquo;it is difficult to make historicals with the kind of nuance that they deserve.&rsquo;
'I suppose they are difficult because you have to take sides. There is no such thing as an objective history. History is written by the victors, and you have to read between the lines. I think it is difficult to make historicals with the kind of nuance that they deserve. It&rsquo;s easy to make a grand spectacle with hundreds of elephants and horses and so on,&rsquo; he said.
He further added, &lsquo;But to understand these people as human beings, I think is more difficult. Yeah. And then you run the risk of offending people, but I don&rsquo;t think Taj: Divided by Blood is going to offend anyone. It presents an original, non-Indian perception of this dynasty.&rsquo;

The trailer of the much-anticipated film 'Kuttey', starring Tabu, Arjun Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Radhika Madan, has been finally unveiled. Arjun and Tabu will be portraying the role of cops in the Asmaan Bhardwaj directorial. The film has a good amount of black humour.
The trailer opens with Tabu and others pointing guns at Arjun. He asks them to put down their weapons on his count, but he is the only one to do so. The clip is then broken up into three parts as it shows what happens when the gang collides while hunting for money. The video also shows a glimpse of filmmaker Anurag Kashyap in a scene.
Sharing the trailer on Instagram, Arjun wrote, 'Hato Kamino! Kuttey aa gaye!! #Kuttey trailer out now! In cinemas 13th January.'&nbsp;

The motion poster of Aasmaan Bhardwaj&rsquo;s forthcoming film 'Kuttey' has been unveiled. The film has an ensemble cast including Arjun Kapoor, Tabu, Radhika Madan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Naseeruddin Shah, Kumud Mishra and Shardul Bhardwaj.
In the video, you get a glimpse of all the characters and its tagline reads, &lsquo;Ek haddi, saat kuttey (One bone for seven dogs)&rsquo;. Arjun is seen as a cop, while Tabu plays a senior investigation officer. Naseeruddin portrays the role of a deadly gangster and Konkona plays a Naxalite leader. Radhika, Shardul and Kumud also seem to be on a mission to kill someone, but their role isn&rsquo;t clear yet.

Amid global condemnation over BJP leaders comments on Prophet Mohammad, veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah on Wednesday said he hopes good sense prevails and the "hate wave" against Muslims dissipates even if that doesn't happen in his lifetime.
In an interview to NDTV, the multiple National Award winner also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step in and "stop this poison from spreading".
"I would appeal to him (PM) to knock some good sense into these people. If he believes what was said at the 'Dharam Sansad' in Rishikesh, then he should say so. If he does not, then he should say so," he said.
The BJP on Sunday suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled its Delhi media head Naveen Kumar Jindal after their controversial remarks against the Prophet.
Amid protests by Muslim groups over the remarks, the party also issued a statement aimed at assuaging the concerns of minorities and distancing itself from these members, asserting that it respects all religions and strongly denounces the insult of any religious personality.
The controversial remarks also sparked a Twitter trend in the Arab world calling for a boycott of Indian products.
"What the Indian government did was too little, too late. It was a week before they even opened their mouths and said anything condemning these kinds of statements.
"These kinds of statements in a country like Pakistan, Bangladesh or Afghanistan, which we hope to include in 'Akhand Bharat' some day, would result in a death sentence because it would be considered blasphemous. Here, there was not a sound from the top and absolutely no acknowledgement of the hurt caused to millions of believers," Shah told NDTV.
After her suspension from the ruling party, Sharma issued an "unconditional apology", something the senior actor dubbed "insincere".
"It's hardly meant to assuage hurt feelings. I wouldn't be surprised if such a hate speech occurs again. It's ironic you talk of peace and unity, you get locked up in jail for more than a year. You talk of genocide and you get a slap on the wrist. There are double standards working here. It's like the double-think of George Orwell's '1984'." Shah said Sharma was not a "fringe element" as the BJP has claimed.
He also argued that it was "high time" that sensible Hindus spoke up against the hate towards the Muslim community.
Shah said he puts "complete responsibility" on TV news channels and social media for "propagating hate".
"It's a manufactured hate. It's a kind of venom that begins to spew when you are confronted with somebody with an opposite opinion... I wonder how long it is before the shivlings start to be searched under every church," Shah said in an apparent reference to the ongoing case of the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi.
He, however, condemned death threats against Sharma and her family, who are now under Delhi Police's protection.
"This route (threats) is wrong. That's why Pakistan and Afghanistan are in a mess. We do not want to emulate these countries but willy-nilly are we doing so. Not (for) just slaughtering a cow but on the suspicion of slaughtering a cow people are being lynched, untouchables who were skinning a dead cow are whipped in public. These are not the kinds of things that used to happen in India, but in barbaric Islamic countries." Asked if the Khans - Shah Rukh, Salman and Saif - can open up about their thoughts today, Shah said he can't speak for these Bollywood stars.
"They would be risking too much but I don't know how they explain it to their conscience about it. I think they have too much to lose." He also praised Shah Rukh, his co-star of many films such as "Chamatkar" and "Chaahat", for handling media scrutiny with grace last year when his son Aryan was arrested in connection with a drugs case.
He also noted that instead of being acknowledged for all the work done during the lockdown, Sonu Sood gets raided.
Asked to comment on how the film industry was cozying up to the government, Shah said they want to be on the winning side.
"It does look like the BJP is going to stay on the winning side for a while. It's nothing new..." Calling "The Kashmir Files" an "almost fictionalised version of the suffering of the Kashmiri Hindus", the actor said the government is promoting it instead of ensuring the security and rehabilitation for the community.

Amid global condemnation over BJP leaders comments on Prophet Mohammad, veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah on Wednesday said he hopes good sense prevails and the "hate wave" against Muslims dissipates even if that doesn't happen in his lifetime.

Speaking about the statement issued by the Indian govt after protests by Arab countries condemning the comments by BJP leaders, Naseeruddin Shah said that what the Indian govt did was too little, too late.

Amid global condemnation over BJP leaders comments on Prophet Mohammad, veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah on Wednesday said he hopes good sense prevails and the "hate wave" against Muslims dissipates even if that doesn't happen in his lifetime.
In an interview to NDTV, the multiple National Award winner also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step in and "stop this poison from spreading".
"I would appeal to him (PM) to knock some good sense into these people. If he believes what was said at the 'Dharam Sansad' in Rishikesh, then he should say so. If he does not, then he should say so," he said.
The BJP on Sunday suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled its Delhi media head Naveen Kumar Jindal after their controversial remarks against the Prophet.
Amid protests by Muslim groups over the remarks, the party also issued a statement aimed at assuaging the concerns of minorities and distancing itself from these members, asserting that it respects all religions and strongly denounces the insult of any religious personality.
The controversial remarks also sparked a Twitter trend in the Arab world calling for a boycott of Indian products.
"What the Indian government did was too little, too late. It was a week before they even opened their mouths and said anything condemning these kinds of statements.
"These kinds of statements in a country like Pakistan, Bangladesh or Afghanistan, which we hope to include in 'Akhand Bharat' some day, would result in a death sentence because it would be considered blasphemous. Here, there was not a sound from the top and absolutely no acknowledgement of the hurt caused to millions of believers," Shah told NDTV.
After her suspension from the ruling party, Sharma issued an "unconditional apology", something the senior actor dubbed "insincere".
"It's hardly meant to assuage hurt feelings. I wouldn't be surprised if such a hate speech occurs again. It's ironic you talk of peace and unity, you get locked up in jail for more than a year. You talk of genocide and you get a slap on the wrist. There are double standards working here. It's like the double-think of George Orwell's '1984'." Shah said Sharma was not a "fringe element" as the BJP has claimed.
He also argued that it was "high time" that sensible Hindus spoke up against the hate towards the Muslim community.
Shah said he puts "complete responsibility" on TV news channels and social media for "propagating hate".
"It's a manufactured hate. It's a kind of venom that begins to spew when you are confronted with somebody with an opposite opinion... I wonder how long it is before the shivlings start to be searched under every church," Shah said in an apparent reference to the ongoing case of the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi.
He, however, condemned death threats against Sharma and her family, who are now under Delhi Police's protection.
"This route (threats) is wrong. That's why Pakistan and Afghanistan are in a mess. We do not want to emulate these countries but willy-nilly are we doing so. Not (for) just slaughtering a cow but on the suspicion of slaughtering a cow people are being lynched, untouchables who were skinning a dead cow are whipped in public. These are not the kinds of things that used to happen in India, but in barbaric Islamic countries." Asked if the Khans - Shah Rukh, Salman and Saif - can open up about their thoughts today, Shah said he can't speak for these Bollywood stars.
"They would be risking too much but I don't know how they explain it to their conscience about it. I think they have too much to lose." He also praised Shah Rukh, his co-star of many films such as "Chamatkar" and "Chaahat", for handling media scrutiny with grace last year when his son Aryan was arrested in connection with a drugs case.
He also noted that instead of being acknowledged for all the work done during the lockdown, Sonu Sood gets raided.
Asked to comment on how the film industry was cozying up to the government, Shah said they want to be on the winning side.
"It does look like the BJP is going to stay on the winning side for a while. It's nothing new..." Calling "The Kashmir Files" an "almost fictionalised version of the suffering of the Kashmiri Hindus", the actor said the government is promoting it instead of ensuring the security and rehabilitation for the community.

Karan who had left the job in an advertising agency to pursue his passion of writing suffers from pangs of procrastination and lethargy. He just doesn’t want to make earnest attempts! This forces Alisha to take over the role of being the pillar for the financial and emotional needs of the relationship. In stark contrast to her cousin,Tia (Ananya Panday) she leads a ‘mediocre’ lifestyle which stays on like a thread of a life she could have had if her father (Naseeruddin Shah) didn’t pursue his passion of making cheese at a small venture out of Nashik. She blames her father for losing her mother and injecting a sense of fear of being stuck in a relationship.
As she fights to accept the reality of her relationship, her cousin Tia invites her and Karan for a weekend break with her fiancé Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi). Zain prefers to play the victim in his own web of convoluted reasons – in business and relationships.

She lives through her character of a rich and naïve kid who thinks of learning pottery to kill boredom or be blind to the ripples around her life. Perhaps her reason to trust stems from her own ingenuity in another part of her life. Dhairya Karwa comes across as a good friend but not so great partner. His character hasn’t been explored much but he still manages to do a decent job. Rajat Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah have little screen-time but they make the most out of it through their acting brilliance.
This is the first time a film has used an intimacy expert. The decision has paid well as what could have been an exorbitant display of lust turns into moments of passion. From exciting and full of life to crashing of relationships and finally submerging the audience into his narrative, Shakun utilizes waves to represent the curve of the film.
There are pockets of waning grip yet in the last thirty minutes the film tries to make up for it. The film could have definitely benefited from a theatrical release. Until then, watch it on Amazon Prime Video’s this weekend.

Speaking about 'Kuttey', Vishal Bhardwaj said, it is very special for him as it is his first film with son Aasmaan&nbsp;and he is excited to see what he does with it.
The senior Bhardwaj also added that he has worked with Naseer Sahab, Tabu, Konkona and Radhika in different films throughout his career, but his son Aasmaan&nbsp;has managed to bring them all together in one film.

'Kuttey' boasts of a stellar cast that includes Konkona Sen Sharma, Tabu, Naseeruddin Shah, Arjun Kapoor, Kumud Mishra, Radhika Madan, Shardul Bhardwaj among others.
Son of film director Vishal Bhardwaj and singer Rekha Bhardwaj, 'Kuttey' will be Aasmaan&nbsp;Bhadwaj's directorial debut. The film is being touted as a crime thriller. Aasmaan Bhardwaj has completed his Bachelors in Film Making from the School of Visual Arts, NYC and has assisted his father in cult films like '7 Khoon Maaf', 'Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola' and 'Pataakha'.

'Kuttey' is being produced by Luv Ranjan and Vishal Bhardwaj, under the banners of Luv Films and Vishal Bhardwaj Films. The film will be presented by Gulshan Kumar and Bhushan Kumar's T-Series. The music of the film has been composed by none other than Vishal Bhardwaj himself and lyrics have been penned by Gulzar.
