India nasal vaccine price revealed: ₹800 plus 5% GST for Bharat Biotech's iNCOVACC, says report

Days after the Indian government cleared the use of the country's first nasal vaccine against Covid-19, the inoculant's price has been revealed.
Bharat Biotech's iNCOVACC is set to cost ₹800, excluding a Goods and Services Tax (GST) levy for private markets. The needle-less vaccine will cost ₹325 plus GST for government supplies.
A press release from the vaccine maker said the jab will be rolled out in the fourth week of January, 2023.
The approval of the nasal vaccine was announced on 23 December 2022. It will be available at private hospitals as a booster dose for adults who have already been injected with 2 doses of either Covaxin or Covishield.
The ministry's approval for the intranasal vaccine as a booster comes amid a spurt in Covid cases in China and some other countries.
The nasal vaccine -- BBV154 -- had received approval of the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) in November for restricted use in an emergency situation for those above 18 years as a heterologous booster dose.
The intranasal vaccine iNCOVACC is a recombinant replication deficient adenovirus vectored vaccine with a pre-fusion stabilised spike protein. This vaccine candidate was evaluated in phase I, II and III clinical trials with successful results, the Hyderabad-based vaccine-maker had said in a statement.
Clinical trials were conducted to evaluate iNCOVACC as a primary dose schedule as well as a heterologous booster dose for subjects who have previously received two doses of either Covishield or Covaxin.

The needle-less vaccine is recommended as the first booster, and not meant for those who have already taken a precaution dose, the report quoted Dr NK Arora, head of India's vaccine task force, as saying.
He added that "at the moment", taking a fourth dose of vaccine is of "no value", and this option is also not available on the vaccination app CoWIN.
"Let us assume you want to take another fourth dose. There is a concept what is called as 'antigen sink'. If a person is repeatedly immunised with a particular type of antigen, the body stops responding, or responds poorly.
And that is why initially mRNA vaccines are given with a gap of six months. Later on, people are taking at three-month gap. But it has not helped too much in that case. Therefore, at the moment taking a fourth dose is of no value," Dr Arora said.

Days after the Indian government warned people that "Covid is not over yet", a nasal vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech has been approved by the Union Health Ministry, according to sources quoted by news agency PTI.
The intranasal vaccine, codenamed BBV154, will be added to India's vaccination programme as a booster dose for adults. It will be available at private health facilities, and available as an option on the Co-WIN online platform.
The needle-less vaccine was approved by the Drugs Controller General of India in November 2022 for restricted use in an emergency situation for adults as a heterologous booster dose.
The approval for the vaccine comes amid a spurt in Covid cases in China and some other countries.

As India continues its fight against Covid-19, the very first intranasal vaccine manufactured by Bharat Biotech got approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on Tuesday. The vaccine has been approved for &nbsp;&lsquo;restricted emergency use in those aged above 18 years&rsquo;.
Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL), the maker of Covaxin completed clinical trials of the nasal vaccine with about 4,000 volunteers. No side effects or adverse reactions were reported, news agency PTI reported quoting company sources.&nbsp;
Taking to twitter Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya shared the information on the new nasal vaccine. "With the science-driven approach &amp; Sabka Prayas, we will defeat COVID-19," Mandaviya said.

First nasal spray to treat Covid-19 in adults is here. Pharma company Glenmark has launched Nitric Oxide Nasal Spray, called FabiSpray in India, in partnership with SaNOtize.
The makers say that the spray will treat adult patients suffering from Covid-10, news agency ANI has reported.
Glenmark received manufacturing and marketing approval from India's drug regulator for Nitric Oxide Nasal Spray as part of the accelerated approval process.
The company said that phase 3 trial in India demonstrated reduction of viral load by 94 per cent in 24 hours and 99 per cent in 48 hours. "Nitric Oxide Nasal Spray was safe and well-tolerated in Covid-19 patients," an official statement said.
The company claims that when the Nitric Oxide Nasal is sprayed over nasal mucosa it acts as a physical and chemical barrier against the virus.
"FabiSpray is designed to kill the Covid-19 virus in the upper airways. When sprayed over nasal mucosa, it acts as a physical and chemical barrier against the virus, preventing it from incubating and spreading to the lungs," the statement said.
Terming the spray an effective and safe antiviral treatment for Covid-19, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd's Chief Commercial Officer Robert Crockart said "we are confident it will offer patients a much needed and timely therapy option."
