&nbsp;Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday said the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra will win more than 50 per cent of the Lok Sabha seats in the state.
There are 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra. As per the seat-sharing agreement among the three MVA parties, the Shiv Sena (UBT) is contesting 21 seats, Congress 17 and NCP (SP) 10. These three parties are fighting the national elections as part of the opposition INDIA bloc.
Talking to reporters here, Pawar said there could be disagreements among the INDIA bloc partners over certain seats, but attention should not be paid to it.
The broader understanding among the opposition parties is to win the polls to provide a stable government, he said.
He termed as wrong the BJP's 'Abki baar, 400 paar' slogan of winning 400-plus seats in the Lok Sabha polls.
The opposition won six seats in Maharashtra in the 2019 parliamentary polls - four by the undivided NCP and one each by the Congress and the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) each.
"This election will see a rise in this number. We will win more than 50 per cent seats in Maharashtra," Pawar said.
Hitting back at Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Pawar said instead of the BJP leader asking him the account of his work, he should do the same as his government has been in power for the last two years.
Pawar also blamed intense heat for the lower turnout in the five seats in the state, where polling was held in the first phase.
He, however, also said that it was necessary to ponder over the lack of enthusiasm shown by the voters. He said the entire world knows his work as the Union agriculture minister of the country from 2004 to 2014.

Attacking the BJP, Pawar also said never ever in the past there was such misuse of central agencies, and cited the arrests of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren.

BJP's Hemant Rasane, while conceding defeat, said he as a candidate failed in this election and will introspect on what went wrong and where.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday failed to retain Kasba Peth Assembly seat, its stronghold in Maharashtra's Pune district, as Congress candidate Ravindra Dhangekar defeated the saffron party nominee Hemant Rasane in the bypoll.
The BJP was in power in Kasba Peth constituency for 28 years. Girish Bapat, the current BJP MP from Pune, represented the seat five times till 2019. This time, Dhangekar, having support of the Maha Vikas Aghadi comprising the Nationalist Congress Party, Congress and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), managed to breach the BJP's stronghold.
Dhangekar polled 73,194 votes while Rasane received 62,244 votes, as per figures on the Election Commission's website after the final round of counting.
In 2019, BJP's Mukta Tilak had won the seat. She died after battling cancer in December 2022, which necessitated the by-election in the constituency, located in the old area of Pune city.
The victory of Congress in Kasba is significant as it was the first direct contest between the ruling BJP-Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the opposing MVA after the change of the state government in June last year.
"This is people's victory. The day I filled the nomination form, people of Kasba Peth constituency decided to make me victorious," said an elated Dhangekar, who was seen being carried by Congress workers on their shoulders outside the votes counting centre here after the result was declared.
BJP's Rasane, while conceding defeat, said he as a candidate failed in this election and will introspect what went wrong and where.
"Earlier, it used to be a triangular contest, but this time it was a straight fight between the BJP and the Congress," he said.
Congress state vice president Mohan Joshi congratulated the Kasba Peth voters for handing over such a "historical" win to the party and the MVA.
"This is the victory of all the MVA workers who fought this election with great unity. This election has shown that money power cannot work," he said.
During the campaigning, the Congress and other MVA constituents had levelled allegations against the BJP of luring voters with the help of money, a charge denied by the saffron party.
As the bypolls to Kasba and Chinchwad seats in Pune had become an issue of prestige for the MVA as well as the ruling Shinde-BJP coalition in the state, big leaders like NCP president Sharad Pawar, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis campaigned for their respective candidates.

The bypolls were necessitated by deaths of MLAs Mukta Tilak and Laxman Jagtap, both leaders of the ruling BJP.

In Kasba seat, BJP candidate Hemant Rasane is facing Congress' Ravindra Dhangekar. In Chinchwad, BJP's Ashwini Jagtap and Nana Kate of the NCP are engaged in a face-off.
The bypolls are expected to set the tone for civic polls in key cities like state capital Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, and Aurangabad. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and party leader Ajit Pawar, state Congress president Nana Patole, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray and others campaigned in both constituencies over the last 10 days.

The current worth of the land is ₹83 crore, and it had been reserved to build houses for slum-dwellers, the Opposition claims.
CM Shinde has rejected allegations of wrongdoing and corruption.
On the other side, BJP legislators Pravin Darekar, Gopichand Padalkar, Shweta Mahale and Shinde camp members also staged a demonstration over the alleged insult of saints by Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Andhare. State NCP president Jayant Patil, whose party is a constituent of the MVA along with the Sena and Congress, in a tweet said, &ldquo;A serious case of challenging the legitimacy of the Eknath Shinde government is being heard by a Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court.&rdquo; &ldquo;In such a case, it is improper that Shinde shares stage with the Chief Justice of India. This is not as per protocol.&rdquo; CJI Lalit was on Saturday felicitated at an event in Mumbai where Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju was present.&nbsp;

Posting pictures of Saturday&rsquo;s event, Congress spokesman Sachin Sawant tweeted, &ldquo;When legitimacy and legality of the Shinde-Fadnavis government is being examined by Hon&rsquo;ble SC itself and not only the current state government but also the man heading it can be disqualified, the dais looks rather incongruous.&rdquo; Shiv Sena spokesperson Arvind Sawant claimed nothing was happening these days as per norms, rules and law.&nbsp;

&ldquo;This is the reason we say democracy is in danger,&rdquo; he added.&nbsp; Shinde had led a revolt against the Shiv Sena leadership in June this year which resulted in the collapse of the Thackeray-led MVA government.&nbsp;
Later, Shinde was sworn in as the CM on June 30 along with BJP&rsquo;s Devendra Fadnavis as his deputy.&nbsp;

Sena backs Modi govt on skipping Question Hour in Parliament

PTI,&nbsp;New Delhi: The Shiv Sena on Thursday came out in support of the Centre's move to drop Question Hour from the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, and said the decision was taken due to an "emergency situation" caused by the pandemic, which everyone needs to understand.
Talking to reporters, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said that other platforms to question the government are always available.
According to the notifications issued by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats, there will be no Question Hour and private members' bills will not be taken up in the monsoon session, while the Zero Hour will be restricted.
"Even though the monsoon session of Parliament will not have a Question Hour, it is important to understand why it is so," Raut said.
"This is an emergency situation. We need to understand and not criticise," he said, adding that even in Maharashtra the monsoon session of the state assembly will be held for two days only.
Several opposition parties have criticised the move to exclude Question hour during the monsoon session, with some leaders accusing the Modi government of trying to "murder the democracy" in the name of the COVID-19 pandemic and of reducing "Parliament to a notice board".
Replying to a question, Raut said that Army chief M M Naravane rushing off to Ladakh shows that the China-India stand-off was serious.
"Even External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had tweeted the situation was worse than 1962," he said.
The Army chief began his two-day visit to Ladakh on Thursday to carry out a comprehensive review of the security situation in the region in view of China's fresh attempts to change status quo along the southern bank of Pangong lake.
Raut criticised the opposition's demand to reopen places of worship in Maharashtra amid the pandemic and made it clear that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government will take appropriate decision at the right time.
"The opposition leaders should not play with peoples' lives. The state government is of the view that this is not the right time to reopen places of worship. The opposition leaders should understand the thought behind the decision and support the government," the Sena MP said.
"Yesterday, the coronavirus numbers in Maharashtra were more than 15,000. The opposition should have patience and think about people's health and well-being first," he added.
"Unlike the Centre, the MVA government doesn't think that COVID-19 is act of God. The state government believes it will have to fight the pandemic on its own," Raut said.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had recently said that the economy has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, which is an 'act of God'.
Raut lambasted Aurangabad MP Imtiaz Jaleel for public agitations seeking reopening of the places of worship.
"His (Jaleel's) Lok Sabha win was an accident due to a three-cornered fight. Next time, such an accident will not happen," he said.
"Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is not happy about the closure of temples and other places of worship. But for the government, people's health is the priority," Raut added.
When asked about the criticism of the state government effecting transfers amid the pandemic, Raut asked, "Is there a rule that a new government shouldn't effect bureaucratic transfers?" On the criticism that Uddhav Thackeray was operating from home during the pandemic, he said, "Narendra Modi and Thackeray function in a similar manner. Even Modi is working from Delhi. Why should the chief minister break the safety protocol? When a chief minister travels, there is crowd." "From where he should work is entirely his call," Raut added.
"State BJP leaders should dare to ask Modi to move out of Delhi and travel in the country," he said.
