Six persons have died and hundreds have been displaced over the last couple of days as heavy rains battered several districts of Maharashtra, causing floods, road blockages and widespread damage to crops, officials said on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who reviewed the flood situation with the disaster management department, said the next 48 hours would be crucial for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, which remain on high alert.
The administration is closely monitoring the situation, ensuring evacuation of citizens from low-lying areas and coordinating rescue operations, an official from the disaster management control room said.
At least six people have died in rain-related incidents in the state in the last couple of days.
More than 290 people have been rescued from the flood-hit villages of Maharashtra's Nanded district, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Army have been deployed in the region.
According to meteorologists, the torrential rains were triggered by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and the strengthening of monsoon winds.
"The system has activated a trough extending from north Konkan to Kerala. This has triggered very heavy to extremely heavy rains over Konkan, central Maharashtra and the ghats, while the rest of the state is witnessing moderate showers," said S D Sanap, senior scientist of the India Meteorological Department, Pune.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast intense rainfall for Konkan, including Mumbai, and parts of central Maharashtra for the next two days, while an orange alert has been sounded in Marathwada and Vidarbha, where the intensity of rainfall is expected to reduce to a yellow alert later this week.
Talking to reporters, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said that the incessant showers have submerged nearly 10 lakh hectares of agricultural land in the state.
The damage assessment will commence once the rains subside, he said.
In Gadchiroli, incessant rain since Monday evening has inundated low-lying areas and disrupted connectivity.
More than 50 villages in Bhamragad taluka remain cut off after the Perlkota River overflowed, forcing the closure of the Bhamraga-Allapalli Highway.
A 19-year-old youth from Kodpe village was swept away while crossing a swollen stream, officials said.
Major rivers in Washim district are in spate for the fourth consecutive day, damaging thousands of hectares of kharif crops.
In western Maharashtra, Radhanagari dam in Kolhapur released 11,500 cusecs of water into the Bhogavati River after heavy inflows, causing the Panchganga River to flow above danger levels for the fifth time this season.
According to officials, the Kolhapur-Ratnagiri Highway remained shut for several hours due to landslides, disrupting traffic.
Similarly, heavy discharge from the Chandoli Dam increased water levels in the Warna River, and downstream villages in Kolhapur have been alerted, they said.
The Koyna Dam, a major hydro-electricity generating reservoir, on Tuesday started controlled release of water into the Koyna River, and the major towns, such as Karad in Satara district, were alerted about the possible rise in water levels of rivers, officials from the state water resources department said.
In Konkan, Raigad district recorded more than 160 mm of rainfall in Roha taluka on Monday, with the Kundalika and Savitri Rivers flowing above danger marks.
The district administration has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Tuesday.
Local officials said that road connectivity was disrupted in Mahad and Nagothane due to landslides and flooding of village routes.
With the rains showing no immediate signs of abating, the state administration has appealed to citizens to stay indoors unless necessary.
Rescue teams of the SDRF, NDRF and the Army have been deployed in vulnerable areas.

Torrential rains in Mumbai on Tuesday inundated several low-lying areas, slowed down road traffic and local train services, affecting normal life in the metropolis and neighbouring areas.
The city civic body said the government and semi-government offices here will remain closed on Tuesday and appealed to the private establishments to allow their employees to work from home and avoid unncessary travel.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in a statement on Tuesday morning, announced the closure as a precautionary measure, in view of the continuous heavy rains in the city and suburbs and the 'red alert' warning issued by the IMD.
The statement said the decision applies to all BMC offices and state-run establishments, excluding essential services.
Schools and colleges were also shut in view of the relentless rains and the 'red alert' warning issued by the IMD, which forecast extremely heavy showers at isolated places in Mumbai and neighbouring districts on Tuesday.
The Mumbai Police appealed to residents to step out of homes only if necessary and also requested the private sector to allow work from home.
Several parts of Mumbai received more than 200 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, with Vikhroli in the eastern suburbs reporting the highest downpour at 255.5 mm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The Directorate of Higher Education has declared a holiday for all senior colleges in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. The order applies to colleges in Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.

As per civic officials, the island city recorded more rain compared to suburbs between 5 am and 6 am on Tuesday.
Mumbai Central, Parel, Grant Road, Malabar Hill, Dadar, Worli and some other areas recorded 40 mm to 65 mm rainfall in just one hour, leading to water-logging at many places.
People complained of waterlogging on railway tracks in low-lying areas of Dadar, Matunga, Parel and Sion.
The railway authorities, however, claimed the water was below the track level and hence train movement was unaffected though the services were delayed.
Waterlogging was also reported at Hindmata, Andheri Subway and in some parts of the Eastern Express Highway, Mumbai-Gujarat highway and the Eastern Freeway.
To make the situation worse, there was an early morning technical snag in the signalling system between Ambivali and Shahad stations on the Mumbai suburban network.
Local trains on the Central Railway's main line were running late by 10 minutes and on the harbour line trains by 5 minutes around 8 am, as per a CR spokesperson.
A Western Railway spokesperson said their suburban services were running a little late due to poor visibility.
All agencies in the city were on alert mode.
Considering the situation, Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti appealed to people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
"Good Morning Mumbai, Hope you are adhering to the safety guidelines in wake of the heavy showers expected today," he said in a post on X.
"Please take care, step out only if necessary, prevent going near the shore during high tide and don't forget, you will find us around the corner for help, in case of any emergency," the official said.
Requesting the private sector to enable work from home as much as possible, he added.
Rainfall during the early morning hours and late evening could lead to traffic snarls as there was 3.75 metre high tide at 9.16 am and of 3.14 metres to occur at 8.53 pm.
In the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Tuesday, the island city, eastern and western suburbs recorded an average rainfall of 186.43 mm, 208.78 mm and 238.19 mm, respectively, an official said.
In the forecast for Tuesday, India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted "very heavy to extremely heavy" rainfall in the city and suburbs of Mumbai with occasional gusty winds reaching 45-55 kmph.
Vikhroli reported the highest downpour at 255.5 mm, followed by Byculla at 241 mm, Juhu 221.5 mm and Bandra 211 mm, the IMD said.
The city's Mahalaxmi area recorded comparatively lower rainfall at 72.5 mm, it added.&nbsp;

There was no diversion of any routes of bus services of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, the officials said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai, and neighbouring Thane and Raigad districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy showers at isolated locations on Monday and Tuesday.
It also issued a red alert for Ratnagiri district on Monday, and an orange alert for Sindhudurg on Monday and Tuesday.
Heavy rains have been lashing Mumbai since Saturday.
After the heavy downpour overnight on Monday, the rain intensity further increased from 9 am, a civic official said.
The island city, eastern and western suburbs recorded an average rainfall of 37 mm, 39 mm and 29 mm, respectively, in just one hour from 9 am.
Chembur in the eastern suburbs recorded the highest rainfall of 65 mm, followed by 50 mm in Shivaji Nagar in the one-hour period, the official said.
In the 24 hours ending at 8 am on Monday, the island city recorded an average rainfall of 54.58 mm, the eastern suburbs received 72.61 mm, while the western suburbs recorded 65.86 mm rain, according to officials.

The IMD has already issued an &lsquo;Orange&rsquo; alert for Mumbai and all its neighbouring districts, barring Raigad, where a &lsquo;Red&rsquo; alert has been sounded for Friday.
Though it had issued a similar alert on Thursday, the city received moderate rainfall.
As per a &lsquo;Monsoon Report&rsquo; of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the island city, Eastern suburbs, and Western suburbs have so far received an average rainfall of 29.40 mm, 29.44 mm and 18.88 mm, respectively.
IMD&rsquo;s Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded 22.4 mm and 23.9 mm rainfall, respectively.
Due to the rains since morning, with intense spells in between, vehicle movements on the city roads have slowed down.
Suburban train services on the Central Railway network were running without any problem, said officials. A few locals on the Western Railway network were running 10-15 minutes late, said WR officials.
In view of the forecast for heavy rains in Mumbai and neighbouring districts, police have urged citizens to take precautions.
&ldquo;Due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai and nearby districts, citizens are advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, avoid coastal areas, and drive cautiously,&rdquo; said Mumbai police on X.
&ldquo;Our officials and staff are on high alert and ready to assist Mumbaikars. In case of any emergency, please dial 100 / 112 / 103,&rdquo; they said.

Motorists complained of slow traffic movement on both the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway due to rain and other reasons during the morning rush hours.
Some commuters also complained that locals trains were running with a little delay.
In the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Monday, the island city recorded an average rainfall of 23.45 mm, the eastern suburbs received 36.42 mm and the western suburbs got 50.02 mm rainfall, civic officials said.
For the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a generally cloudy sky with moderate spells of rain in Mumbai and suburbs, with the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds at isolated places.
After a high tide of 3.91 metres at 9.19 am, another one of 3.38 metres was expected at 8.37 pm. A low tide of 2.28 metres was expected at 3.03 pm, as per a civic official.
