Afzal Ansari, the brother of slain gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, has credited Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for BJP's wins in Uttar Pradesh in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections.

Ansari said that had Yogi not camped in Varanasi, retaining his seat would have proved difficult for Modi.
&ldquo;Modi&rsquo;s magic is over now as Varanasi constituency is surrounded by Chandauli, Ghazipur and Machhlishahr LS constituencies and BJP lost all three. Gone are the days when Modi&rsquo;s magic led to a cascading effect in east UP, Bihar and West Bengal because of his candidature from Varanasi,&rdquo; Ansari was quoted as saying the Times of India.
Ansari added that BJP should thank Yogi for &ldquo;avoiding a major disaster&rdquo; in UP. &ldquo;Due to his hard work and efforts, 30 seats could be won by BJP,&rdquo; the SP MP said.

Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari was laid to rest at the Kali Bagh burial ground in Ghazipur on Saturday.
The body was brought to the family's ancestral burial ground, about half a km from their residence, where a grave was dug on Friday. The local administration made elaborate security arrangements outside Ansari's residence and the burial ground.
Ansari died due to a cardiac arrest on Thursday. His body was brought to his hometown around midnight on Friday, family sources said, adding the burial rituals took place at the residence.
The body was taken to the Kali Bagh burial ground in a procession led by family members, including his son Umar Ansari and brother Afzal Ansari. A large crowd accompanied the procession and some also raised slogans.
Police faced a tough time in managing the crowd who tried to force their way into the burial ground where entry was restricted. Security personnel, including that of the paramilitary, were deployed at strength around the Ansari residence and the burial ground.
DIG of Varanasi Range O P Singh said adequate police force was deployed everywhere.
The Ansari family is cooperating with the police. People have been coming since Friday night and announcements were being made to ensure that there is no overcrowding at any point, the police officer said.
In a post on X on Friday, Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA and Mukhtar Ansari's nephew Suhaib Ansari said, "My uncle Mukhtar Ansari passed away last night. Tomorrow, at 10 am, he will be buried in our Kali Bagh graveyard of Yusufpur Mohammadabad (Ghazipur). All of you are requested to pray for the forgiveness of the deceased." Mukhtar Ansari, who was lodged in the Banda jail, was rushed to the Rani Durgawati Medical College on Thursday night when his health deteriorated. He died at the hospital during treatment.
After the post-mortem on Friday, a convoy carrying Ansari's body left Banda for his native place in Ghazipur amid heavy security. The ambulance carrying the body was accompanied by police vehicles along the 400-kilometre route via several Uttar Pradesh districts.

This comes amid allegations by his family that Ansari died due to slow poisoning in the jail.&nbsp;
Banda Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Bhagwan Das Gupta ordered the statutory magisterial probe, appointing Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Garima Singh as the investigating officer. She has been asked to submit the probe report within a month.
However, opposition parties demanded a CBI probe, or an inquiry that involves the higher judiciary. The BJP slammed them saying they have the habit of emotionally exploiting every issue to spoil communal harmony.

According to local media reports, the examination was conducted by a panel of doctors at the Rani Durgawati Medical College. The report refuted claims made by his relatives and several politicians that he died due to slow poisoning. The development comes hours after Banda's Chief Judicial Magistrate Bhagwan Dass Gupta ordered a judicial inquiry into the death of the 63-year-old five-time MLA.
MP/MLA court judge Garima Singh was asked to submit the report to the CJM within a month.
Meanwhile, Mukhtar Ansari's bother Sibgatullah Ansari told ANI, that the last rites will be done on March 30 morning.&nbsp;
Ansari was brought to the Durgavati hospital from the district jail in "an unconscious state" at 8.25 pm on Thursday, and died there due to cardiac arrest, a medical bulletin had earlier said. A team of nine doctors attended to him.
Soon after the death, prohibitory orders banning large gatherings were clamped across the state. The UP Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed in strength in Banda, Mau, Ghazipur, and Varanasi districts.
Earlier, on Tuesday, Ansari was admitted at the same hospital when he complained of abdominal pains and was sent back to the prison after 14 hours. His brother Afzal Ansari, who is also the Ghazipur MP, had made the poisoning charge then as well.
The allegations have been denied by the authorities.
In the evening, Ansari&rsquo;s body was headed for Mohammadabad Yusufpur township in Ghazipur district.
Police were on alert in districts that fall on the 400-km Banda-Ghazipur route, which runs through Fatehpur, Kaushambi, Prayagraj and Varanasi.
The burial at the family cemetery, where a grave was dug during the day for Ansari, will take place Saturday morning, Suhaib Ansari, his nephew and Samajwadi Party's MLA from Mohammadabad, said on X.
Shops in Mohammadabad remained closed during the day and many people gathered outside the Ansari family home. Gulab Ram, a former Ghazipur unit chief of the Bahujan Samaj Party, told PTI Videos that "people are heartbroken".
Ansari&rsquo;s son Umar Ansari had arrived at the Banda hospital past midnight Thursday.
"We got the news of his death only through the media. We will demand a high-level inquiry and do whatever we have to do through the court. We have full confidence in the court," he told reporters, levelling the poisoning charge again.
He also wrote to the Banda district magistrate, alleging that his father was killed in a planned manner and demanding that the postmortem be performed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi.
"We have no faith of getting justice from the administration and the doctors' team of Banda," his letter said.
SP president Akhilesh Yadav demanded a probe under the supervision of a Supreme Court judge. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said there should be an independent inquiry into the death.

A judicial inquiry has been ordered to probe the death of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari.

A chief judicial magistrate's court in Uttar Pradesh's Banda on Friday ordered a judicial inquiry into the death of gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, a senior official said.
Banda Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Bhagwan Das Gupta appointed Garima Singh, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (MP-MLA Court Banda) as the investigating officer in the case, the official said.
The CJM has sought the probe report within a month.
The 63-year-old Ansari was brought to the Rani Durgavati Medical College in Banda from the district jail in "an unconscious state" on Thursday evening and died at the hospital following a cardiac arrest.
Afzal Ansari, who is also the Ghazipur MP, on Tuesday alleged that his brother was given slow poison in jail.
"Mukhtar said that he was given a poisonous substance in food in jail. This happened for the second time. Around 40 days ago also he was given poison. And recently, he was again given this (poison) due to which his condition is bad," Afzal Ansari had said.
Afzal Ansari had said that during the virtual hearing of a case in a Barabanki court on March 21, Ansari's lawyer had filed an application in the court alleging that his client had been given "slow poison" in jail due to which his condition was deteriorating.
Earlier, Ansari was hospitalised for around 14 hours on Tuesday after he complained of abdominal pain.
According to the probe order letter, a request was made by the Senior Superintendent, District Jail, Banda on March 28 to nominate an officer for the judicial inquiry into the death of Ansari.
Director General of Prisons SN Sabat had earlier told PTI that there will be a judicial inquiry into the matter.

Mukhtar Ansari straddled the worlds of crime and politics in Uttar Pradesh. The gangster-politician was booked in 65 criminal cases ranging from murder to extortion and was elected an MLA five times on the tickets of different political parties.
Ansari, 63, died of cardiac arrest in a hospital in Banda on Thursday.
Born into an influential family in 1963, Ansari entered the world of crime to establish himself and his gang in the government contract mafia that was then flourishing in the state.
His tryst with crime began as early as 1978, when Ansari was just 15 years of age. He had his first brush with the law when he was booked for criminal intimidation at Saidpur Police Station of Ghazipur.
Almost a decade later in 1986, by the time he had become a well-known face in the contract mafia circle, another case of murder was lodged against him at Muhammad Police Station of Ghazipur.
Over the next decade, Ansari became a common face of crime with at least 14 more cases under serious charges lodged against him.
His growing criminal graph, however, did not hinder his entry in politics.
Ansari was first elected an MLA in the UP assembly in 1996 on a ticket from Bahujan Samaj Party from Mau. He continued his successful run on the seat as an independent candidate in 2002 and 2007 assembly elections.
In 2012, he launched Qaumi Ekta Dal (QED) and won from Mau again.
He won from Mau again in 2017. In 2022 he vacated the seat for his son Abbas Ansari who won from the seat on the ticket of Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party.
Since 2005, till his death, Ansari had been lodged in different jails of UP and Punjab.
He had 28 criminal cases, including that of murder, and seven cases under the UP's Gangster Act registered against him since 2005.
He had been convicted in eight criminal cases since September 2022 and was facing trial in 21 cases in different courts.
Ansari was awarded life term and a penalty of Rs 2.02 lakh by Varanasi MP/MLA earlier this month in a case of fraudulently obtaining an arms licence around 37 years ago.
This was the eighth case in which he was sentenced in the past 18 months by different courts of UP and the second in which he was awarded a life term.
On December 15, 2023, a Varanasi MP/MLA court sentenced Ansari for five years and six months for giving death threat to Mahavir Prasad Rungta for turning hostile and not pursue a case involving the kidnapping and murder of BJP leader and coal trader Nand Kishore Rungta on January 22, 1997.
On October 27, 2023, a Ghazipur MP/MLA court had awarded him 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and penalty of 5 lakh in a Gangster Act case lodged against him in 2010.
On June 5, 2023, a Varanasi MP/MLA had awarded life imprisonment to Ansari in the case of murder of Awadesh Rai, the elder brother of former Congress MLA and present UP Congress president Ajay Rai.
Awadesh Rai was sprayed with bullets when he and brother Ajay were standing outside their house in the Lahurabir locality of Varanasi on August 3, 1991.
On April 29, 2023, Ghazipur MP/MLA court had sentenced Ansari to 10 years of imprisonment in a case of murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai.
The Lucknow bench of Allahabad high court had on September 23, 2022, awarded Ansari five years of rigorous imprisonment in a Gangster Act case registered against him in 1999 at Hazratganj Police Station in Lucknow and imposed a fine on him Rs 50,000.
The Ghazipur MP/MLA court on December 15, 2022, had awarded him 10 years of imprisonment and slapped a penalty of 5 lakh each in two separate cases of Gangster Act lodged against him in 1996 and 2007.
Ansari's first conviction in the last 13 months was awarded by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court.
He was awarded seven years of imprisonment on September 21, 2022, for threatening the jailor of the Lucknow district jail in 2003.
The Uttar Pradesh government had to approach the Supreme Court to bring Ansari back to the state from Ropar jail in Punjab.
Ansari, then a BSP MLA, was lodged in the Ropar jail in January 2019 in connection with an extortion case and remained there for a period of more than two years.
In March 2021, while hearing a plea of the UP government, the SC had directed the Punjab government to hand over Ansari's custody to UP, saying it was being denied on trivial grounds under the guise of medical issues.
The court had also said that a convict or an under-trial prisoner, who disobeys the law of the land, cannot oppose his transfer from one prison to another and the courts are not to be helpless bystanders when the rule of law is being challenged with impunity.
Since 2020, Ansari gang had been under an intense heat from police, which either seized or demolished illegal property worth Rs 608 crore belonging to the gang.
Illegal business, contracts, or tenders worth over Rs 215 crore of the gang was also stopped by the police in this period.&nbsp;

Umar Ansari, the son of UP ganster Mukhtar Ansari, has claimed that his father was given slow poison in jail. Umar's statement came after Mukhtar Ansari died on cardiac arrest in Banda hospital on March 28.&nbsp; The family has said it will approach the judiciary.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I was not told anything from the administration side, I came to know about it through the media... But now the whole nation knows everything... I came to meet him two days ago, but I was not allowed&hellip;," Umar told news agency ANI.
Ansari's family had made these allegations earlier as well.&nbsp;
"We said earlier also and even today we will say the same about the allegation of giving slow poison. On March 19, he was poisoned in the dinner. We will move to the judiciary, we have full faith in it..." Umar Ansaru said.
A post-mortem on the gangster-turned-politician's body will be done on March 29. &nbsp;

Jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari died of a heart attack on March 28. He was brought to Banda Medical College in the evening after he was spotted lying unconscious in his barrack. He was 63.
Recently, he was hospitalised after complaining of abdominal pain in jail. His brother Afzal Ansari claimed that Mukhtar was poisoned in jail.
Meanwhile, police have beefed up security in and around Banda in view of the development and have imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Mau, Banda, and Ghazipur.
Mukhtar had around 60 criminal cases pending against him in UP, Punjab, Delhi, and other states. Earlier on March 13, Ansari was sentenced to life imprisonment in a case related to the use of forged documents for obtaining an arms licence in 1990.
This was the eighth case in which the former five-time MLA has been convicted and sentenced by a court in UP in the past two years.
In December 2023, the MP/MLA Court in Varanasi had convicted Ansari for intimidating Mahavir Prasad Rungta, a key witness in the murder case of 26-year-old coal merchant Nand Kishor Rungta. Consequently, Ansari was sentenced to five and a half years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000.
Ansari has served as an MLA from Mau several times.&nbsp;
His name was on the list of 66 gangsters issued by Uttar Pradesh Police last year. His family members had earlier expressed apprehension that Mukhtar Ansari could be killed in a fake encounter.
The gangster-turned-politician did not contest the 2022 assembly elections and his seat was won by his son Abbas Ansari from the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP).

A special Varanasi court on Wednesday sentenced gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari to life imprisonment in a three-decade-old fake gun licence case.
The order was passed by the special MP-MLA court of judge Awanish Gautam, district government counsel Vinay Singh said.
The case against Ansari was registered under IPC sections 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 120B (criminal conspiracy), along with provisions of the Arms Act at Mohammadabad police station of Ghazipur district in December 1990, he said.
According to the government counsel, Ansari joined the court proceedings via video conference from Banda Jail, where he is currently lodged.
According to police officials, around 60 cases are pending against Ansari in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, New Delhi and other states.
He has so far been convicted in at least seven cases.
