Green fungus is the latest entrant to join the earlier reported cases of black, white, and yellow fungus. The first case of the infection has been detected in Madhya Pradesh's (MP) Indore. After a 34-year-old COVID-19 survivor was diagnosed with green fungus (Aspergillosis). He was shifted to Mumbai by air ambulance for treatment.
The man, who had recovered from coronavirus, underwent a test on suspicion that he had contracted black fungus infection (mucormycosis). But he was instead found to have green fungus infection in his lungs, sinuses, and blood.
Pulmonologist and AIIMS Chief Medical Director Randeep Guleria has said, "Labelling the same fungus with names of different colors can create confusion. Mucormycosis is not a communicable disease, unlike Covid-19. About 90-95 per cent of patients getting infected with mucormycosis are found to have been either diabetic and/or taking steroids. This infection is seen very rarely in those who are neither diabetic or taking steroids."

Amid rising cases of black fungus in the national capital, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has issued regulations under the Epidemic Diseases Act to contain and manage cases of mucormycosis in the city, according to a govt order.
The Delhi Epidemic Diseases Regulations, 2021, which will be valid for a year from the date of publication, states that all healthcare facilities, government or private, will report each and every suspected or confirmed cases of black fungus in the national capital to the city health department.
All healthcare facilities in Delhi will follow guidelines for screening, diagnosis and management of black fungus issued by the Health Ministry. The order said, no person or institution or organisation will spread any information or material for the management of black fungus without prior permission of the health department.
The regulations further said that any person, institution or organisation disobeying these new norms on black fungus shall be deemed to be committing an offence under the Indian Penal Code's Section 188 that is disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant.
