From serving tea and noodles at a roadside stall to dreaming of summiting the highest peaks across all seven continents, Meghalaya's Rifiness Warjri is charting a path of grit and grace.
The 20-year-old mountaineer recently etched her name in history as the youngest person from the state to conquer Mount Everest. But even with this extraordinary feat, Rifiness remains deeply rooted in her humble beginnings.
In an interview with PTI, Rifiness stood proud, yet grounded, as she shared her dreams of scaling the tallest mountains on every continent.
Her journey has captured the hearts of many -- not just for her physical endurance and mental strength but also for the humility and warmth she continues to carry.
Eyeing the prestigious seven summits challenge, Rifiness hopes her path will inspire countless other women from struggling working-class families in small towns and marginalised communities to chase big dreams.
Born in Nongthymmai but now residing in Laitkor area of East Khasi Hills district on the outskirts of Shillong, Rifiness comes from a modest, hardworking family.
Her mother runs a small roadside tea stall while her father sells chicken to support the family.
Despite the national and international recognition she now receives, Rifiness is still often seen helping out at the family stall, wiping tables, serving tea, and chatting with customers, just as she always did.
"It's my home. My roots keep me grounded&hellip; the mountains teach us humility. When I stood atop Everest, I realised how small and insignificant we are. That was one lesson I brought back and I am sharing with everyone," she said.
Despite being a man of few words, her father Shlurbor Kharmyndai could not hide his pride.
"It's a proud moment for us. I wish that she secures a government job as soon as possible so that she can support the family as well, but I also do not want her to stop dreaming. She is free to fly big," he said.
Her elder sister, Noury, who co-manages the family tea stall, also spoke with emotion.
"God has been kind to our family," she said, smiling as she handed a cup of tea to a customer.
"Seeing my sister reach the top of the world is like a dream come true. She worked so hard and deserves all this love and respect," she added.
The Warjri family maintains a strong and loving bond. After the day&rsquo;s work, they gather at home to share simple meals and talk about their day.
Their evenings are often filled with laughter and music, with Rifiness and her sister strumming their ukuleles, singing soft melodies that echo through their home.
Rifiness's journey to Everest was anything but easy. Meghalaya, though rich in natural beauty, lacks mountaineering infrastructure and organised support for adventure sports.
Sponsorship and funding are limited, especially for athletes, and mountaineering is not a popular sport in the state. But with unshakeable determination, intense training, and the emotional strength drawn from her family, Rifiness overcame every obstacle placed in her path.
"I want to show young people, especially girls, that we can dream big and make it happen -- even if we start small," she said.
For children from disadvantaged families, she gave a message: "Your background should never limit your ambition. Believe in yourself and keep going." Her climb has earned her recognition from across the nation. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma felicitated her with cash rewards and acknowledged the significance of her journey for the state's youth.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called her a shining example of India's resilient young generation.
The Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) also honoured her after she symbolically handed over a piece of rock she carried back from Everest, connecting her triumph with the land and people she represents.
Beyond the symbolic moments and celebratory ceremonies, Rifiness's aspirations are only just beginning. She dreams of continuing her mountaineering journey, aiming to conquer the seven summits, climbing the highest peaks on every continent, including Denali in North America, Kilimanjaro in Africa, and Vinson Massif in Antarctica.
Each climb will come with its own set of challenges, but Rifiness is no stranger to hardships.
"I hope someday I will summit all these peaks, but right now I want to complete my BSc, which was stalled due to the training and travelling last year," she added.&nbsp;

A 45-year-old Indian climber died on Mt Everest after showing signs of altitude sickness while descending from the summit point of the world's highest peak, according to a media report on Friday.
The deceased climber has been identified as Subrata Ghosh from West Bengal. Ghosh is the second foreigner to die on the 8,848.86 metres-high Mt Everest this season, The Himalayan Times newspaper reported.
Bodhraj Bhandari, Managing Director at Snowy Horizon Treks, said that Ghosh died just below the Hillary Step, near the summit point of Mt Everest on Saturday, according to the paper.
Ghosh was late in making his summit push and reached the top with his guide around 2 pm, the paper said.
During the descent, he became exhausted and showed signs of altitude sickness, eventually refusing to continue, he said.
"Ghosh refused to move while descending from the summit," Bhandari quoted Champal Tamang, his guide, as saying.
Champal returned to Camp IV late last night and informed about the incident this morning, he added.
Ghosh was part of the Mountaineering Association of Krishnanagar&ndash;Snowy Everest Expedition 2025, the paper said.
Efforts are underway to bring his body to the base camp, Bhandari said.
Earlier, 45-year-old Philipp II Santiago from the Philippines died while preparing for the summit push on May 14.
So far, over 50 climbers have successfully reached the peak this season. More than 450 climbers have been granted permits to attempt the ascent.

Fees for the peak spring climbing season will rise from $11,000 to $15,000 for a permit to scale the 8,849-metre (29,032-foot) peak, Narayan Prasad Regmi, director general of the tourism department, told AFP.
"The cost had remained constant for a decade and it was high time to revise that," he said.
Costs of climbing at less popular -- and more demanding -- times of year such as during winter or the monsoon rains have also risen at similar rates, including from $5,500 to $7,500 during the autumn season.
Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 peaks over 8,000 metres and welcomes thousands of climbers each year.
Foreign climbers already spend tens of thousands of dollars in their attempt to climb Everest, with more than 400 purchasing permits last year, bringing in around $4 million to government coffers.
The funds are put towards cleaning trash from the mountain left by climbers as well as search and rescue operations.
Mountaineering expedition companies hoped the price hike would not deter climbers, warning some might look to scale Everest through China.
"Some climbers might shift to Tibet where the facilities are much better," said Mingma G Sherpa, who runs the Imagine Nepal mountaineering company, saying the fee must be spent on improving conditions.
"Our government just increases the royalty, but doesn't do much," he said.
"It needs to also provide support to the climbers and guides."
Nepal has been criticised for allowing too many climbers on Everest while doing little to keep the peak clean.
Last year, the Nepal government ordered Everest mountaineers to carry mandatory trackers and carry bags to remove their excrement.
The fee increase was approved by the government in January, but was only published in the national gazette late Monday.

But they have also been increasingly used to airlift mountaineering teams and tourists over the challenging terrains in the Sagarmatha National Park, home to Mount Everest.
For those who can afford the $1,000 price tag, helicopters reduce the two-week long trek to Everest base camp to just a day -- removing a key source of employment for Nepalis supporting those making the long hike in.
The Airlines Operators Association of Nepal grounded all helicopter flights to the region on Sunday citing security challenges.
It said local youths had erected barriers of flags at landing sites, and threatened action against pilots who land.
"We have suspended all our helicopter flights to the Everest region until the government gives assurance of security for helicopter pilots and a separate spot for emergency landing," Pratap Jung Pandey, first-vice president of the association, told AFP.
The suspension comes after escalating arguments between the aviation authorities, companies and local officials.
Over 50,000 tourists visit the Everest region every year, mostly entering either in a plane or a helicopter.
According to the association, the Everest region sees about 15 helicopter flights per day in the winter, a number that can surge to 60 daily during the peak tourist season.
Sagarmatha National Park in December issued a notice banning commercial sight-seeing helicopter flights from January, sparking a conflict with aviation officials.
"Geologically, this a very sensitive area and the rampant helicopter flights are disturbing the environment," the park's conservation officer Sushma Rana told AFP in December, after the ban was announced.
"The local businesses are also losing out because the trekkers are whisked away by flights."
Local officials said the suspension was announced while negotiations had been ongoing.
"We are going to hold talks to resolve this issue," said Laxman Adhikari, a local ward official.

Search intensifies around Mount Everest Summit for missing Indian climber

&nbsp;A search and rescue operation involving several teams is underway around the Mount Everest Summit to trace an Indian-origin Singaporean climber who has been missing since Saturday.
Teams consisting of three Sherpas each have been searching for Shrinivas Sainis Dattatraya (39), according to Prakash Chandra Devkota, the owner of Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition.
Seven Summit Treks, a Nepal-based adventure travel operator, had organised Dattatraya&rsquo;s Everest ascent.
In the photos, Dattatraya, a senior manager for software engineering at real estate tech firm JLL Technologies, is seen wearing bright orange winter wear, sunglasses and an oxygen mask. He is surrounded by colourful prayer flags marking the 8,849 m summit.
He is clutching a rope with his right hand and stands upright on the peak.
In another picture, the climber lies on his back and is surrounded by three others in similar mountain climbing wear. One of them snaps a shot of him with a smartphone.
He last sent a text message to his wife Sushma Soma, 36, on Friday, saying he had reached Everest&rsquo;s summit. He told her he had high-altitude cerebral oedema (or hace) -- a severe high-altitude illness that could prove fatal -- and was not likely to make it back down, according to the Singapore broadsheet report.
Soma, a musician, learnt at 2 am on Saturday that the two Sherpas he was with, and another climber in the group, made it down from the mountain, but her husband never did.
Devkota said one of the Sherpas, Dendi, had tried to save Dattatraya, but he did not give more details. He added that Dendi had suffered frostbite to his fingers and was hospitalised.
Talking further about the climber, the Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition owner said Dattatraya was his good friend, and he had joined them on previous climbs, including a 2021 expedition to the 8,163 m Manaslu peak in Nepal, but &ldquo;this time is so bad&rdquo;. He did not elaborate further when asked what had happened.
In an Instagram story on Monday, Soma said the search and rescue mission was ongoing. &ldquo;Thank you all for all your (messages). We are grateful for your love and concern,&rdquo; she said.
At least 11 climbers have died so far this climbing season on Mount Everest, and at least two, including Dattatraya, are missing.
Sim Phei Sunn, 47, a public servant, reached the summit in May 2019. She recalled seeing corpses there. She said within the mountaineering community, they have noticed more inexperienced climbers on Everest, which might have contributed to the higher death toll.
Recalling her 2019 expedition, she said, &ldquo;You can see people wearing their helmets the wrong way, and putting their crampons (spikes attached to climbing boots) on the wrong feet, which shows they should not be there.&rdquo; She said established companies usually screen climbers before planning an expedition by looking at their climbing record. This includes the mountains they have scaled, which sports they do and their overall fitness level.
But she said in recent years, more low-cost operators have entered the market, and they are unlikely to turn away inexperienced clients.
Sim recommends hopefuls to spend a few years scaling 6,000 m to 8,000m mountains as well as training in different terrains, including in alpine conditions with ice and snow.
She said, &ldquo;You train before you go to Everest &ndash; you do not go to Everest to train.&rdquo;

While descending, he apparently suffered altitude sickness and frostbite. He got separated from the rest of his group, and fell at around 8,000 metres, likely onto the Tibetan side of the mountain, his family said.
Sherpas began searching for Dattatraya on May 20 but his family wants a special rescue team to be deployed.
According to Channel News Asia, the Singapore High Commission in New Delhi has been in close contact with Shrinivas' family, local authorities in Nepal and emergency medical services.
Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to monitor developments and render the necessary consular support to the family during this difficult time, the channel cited the ministry as saying.

Om Madan Garg is no stranger to adventure -- his parents have taken him on backpacking trips to Vietnam, Thailand and Laos since he was just two-and-a-half months old.

Six-year-old Indian-origin boy Om Madan Garg has become the youngest Singaporean to finish the Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal, a feat that has been recognised by the Singapore Book of Records.
Om made the 10-day journey with his parents in October, reaching the south base camp in Nepal at an altitude of 5,364 metre, after a trek of 65 km.
Om, his father Mayur Garg, 38, and mother Gayatri Mahendram, 39, kicked off their 10-day trek on September 28, aided by a guide and two porters, The Straits Times newspaper reported on Monday.

Their entire journey has been documented on the family&rsquo;s YouTube travel channel, The Brave Tourist, in a seven-part series.
"I want to see the whole world," said Om, the Kindergarten 2 student from Canossaville Preschool whose 65 km trek took him past remote villages, Nepalese temples and monasteries, and scenic vistas of Himalayan mountains like the Everest, Lhotse and Lhotse Sar.
When the going got tough on the undulating and rugged paths towards the Everest Base Camp, lollipops, raisins and cookies kept Om going on the once-in-a-lifetime expedition with his parents.
Mayur -- a senior business analyst and avid mountain climber who has scaled peaks in Indonesia, Russia and Tanzania -- had made the trip to Everest Base Camp in November 2021, and thought it would make for a fun family trip.
To prepare for the trip, the family watched YouTube videos of other trekkers who had logged the journey, and made it a point to be active every day six months prior to the trip.
"We live in the Yio Chu Kang area, and we walk to the Marina Bay Sands area which is about 10 km away. It takes us four to five hours, but we just go,&rdquo; Mayur said.
The regime also included swimming, stair-climbing and excursions to places like Fort Canning.
&ldquo;Fort Canning was hard because we had to go up and down the stairs 30 times. But because it was hard when we were training, when we went to Everest Base Camp, it was easy,&rdquo; Om said.
The high-altitude hike, with an elevation gain of about 2,500 m, is a challenge even for adults. From the starting point at the Nepalese village of Lukla, which is at 2,860 m above sea level, the trio headed to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) and frozen lake bed Gorakshep (5,164 m) before reaching the Everest Base Camp (5,364 m).
The family originally planned for a 13-day trek so that they could go at an easy pace of 5 km a day on the trail. But bad weather conditions meant that their helicopter ride to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, notorious for being the most dangerous airport in the world, was held back for two days.
The family had to make up for the lost time by covering more distance per day, especially on the first day, when they hiked 12 km to the village of Benkar.
&ldquo;Om coped and went along, but towards the end, I got a bit of altitude sickness and had headaches. It&rsquo;s a difficult journey because it&rsquo;s all uphill,&rdquo; said Gayatri, a senior physiotherapist, recalling the first day of the trip.
Om fell sick on the second night of the expedition. &ldquo;I had a tummy upset, and I was feeling yucky. I had to change my trousers three times, but I only had three pairs of trousers. I had to wash my trousers in cold, cold water,&rdquo; he said.
Om&rsquo;s parents added that he was able to continue the journey after he rested and took some medication from a local pharmacy.
&ldquo;There was a plan for every kind of situation. We had helicopter tickets already booked. If something breaks, we thought, we will fly back,&rdquo; said Mayur. Thankfully, the rest of the trek continued without major hiccups.
The family used to wake up at about 6 am every day while on the trek and would hit the trail after breakfast at about 8 am.
After a few hours of trekking, they would break for lunch and then continue on their journey until 3 pm, before retiring for the rest of the day at local tea houses.
&ldquo;We brought all these little card games to play with Om, and we had notepads, so we&rsquo;d also play games like tic-tac-toe to pass the time,&rdquo; said Gayatri. They went to bed at about 7 pm because it was cold and there was nothing much to do at night.
The sight of the young boy on the trail amazed other trekking enthusiasts. The family met a group of six Singaporeans who gave Om their team T-shirt as a souvenir.
&ldquo;They were so emotional after seeing someone so small doing something that they were doing,&rdquo; said Mayur.
&ldquo;My favourite part of the trip is the Hillary Bridge, because it&rsquo;s higher than all the other bridges,&rdquo; he said, referring to the 150m-high suspension bridge that is a popular photo stop along the route.
It was a proud moment for the family when they reached the base camp on the afternoon of October 7. &ldquo;All those emotions that we felt, the stress, the strain &ndash; it was so surreal,&rdquo; said Gayatri.
&ldquo;I felt good, I did something I&rsquo;ve never done before,&rdquo; said Om of his achievement.
The family of three returned to Kathmandu by helicopter after spending a night at the nearby town of Gorakshep.
Om now has his sights set on another ambitious trek to the base camp of Ama Dablam, the third most popular Himalayan peak in Nepal among climbers after Everest and Mera Peak.
He caught a glimpse of that mountain range while on the Everest Base Camp trek. &ldquo;It looks beautiful,&rdquo; said Om.&nbsp;

A Nepalese Sherpa broke her own record as the most successful woman climber of Mount Everest by reaching the summit of the world's highest peak Thursday.
Lakpa Sherpa and several other climbers took advantage of favourable weather to reach the 8,849-meter (29,032-foot) summit early in the morning, her brother and expedition organizer Mingma Gelu said. He said she was in good health and was safely descending from the peak.
Sherpa, 48, never got a chance to get a formal education because had to start earning a living by carrying climbing gear and supplies for trekkers. Thursday's successful ascent was her 10th — the most times any woman has climbed Everest — and she has always said she wanted to inspire all women so they too can achieve their dreams.
A native of Nepal, Sherpa lives in the U.S. with her three children in West Hartford, Connecticut.
Another Nepalese Sherpa guide, Kami Rita, reached the summit for the 26th time Saturday, breaking his own record for the most climbs of Everest. Rita led a group of Sherpa climbers who fixed ropes along the route so that hundreds of other climbers and guides can make their way to the top of the mountain later this month.

A 52-year-old Nepali Sherpa Kami Rita has climbed Mount Everest for the 26th time, besting his own record he set last year.  
Rita and his group of 11 Sherpa guides summitted the 8,848.86-metre peak at 6.55 pm local time on Saturday. 
Rita scaled Mt Everest for the first time on May 13, 1994.
Besides Mt Everest, Rita has also scaled Mt Godwin-Austen otherwise known as K2, Mt Lhotse, Mt Manaslu and Mt Cho Oyu.
He also holds the record for most climbs over 8000 metres. 
The Sherpas made the expedition to fix ropes along the trekking route, to help climbers ahead of the peak climbing season which starts in May. 
Nepal has issued permits to 316 individuals to climb the peak this year.

In April 2021, she had scaled Mt Annapurna (8,091 m), the 10th highest mountain peak in the world and had become the first Indian woman climber to achieve the feat.
Priyanka has also climbed the world's highest peak Mount Everest (8,849 m) in 2013, Mount Lhotse (8,516 m) in 2018, Mount Makalu (8,485 m) and Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m) in 2016.

Mount Everest is set to witness its busiest year ever. According to the authoritative Himalayan Database, since the first scaling of the world's highest peak, 4000 climbers have reached atop the Everest. 
This is prompting concerns about overcrowding and safety since the mountain is opening up to more people leading to potential shortages of oxygen tanks, and increased risk of frostbite and even death. Nepal currently grants permits to all those who apply and are willing to pay over 7 lakhs to scale the nearly 9000 metres tall peak. According to the tourism department, the government has already handed out 378 climbing permits this year.
