Actor Prakash Raj on Wednesday appeared before the ED officials in Hyderabad for questioning in a money laundering case linked to illegal online betting and gambling by certain platforms.
The actor, mainly popular in Telugu, Kannada and other South Indian films, appeared before the officials of the probe agency at its zonal office here.
Besides Raj, the ED had also summoned actors Rana Daggubati, Vijay Deverakonda and Lakshmi Manchu for questioning in the case.
The agency asked Daggubati (40) to appear before the zonal office here on July 23, Raj (60) on July 30, Deverakonda (36) on August 6 and Lakshmi (47) on August 13.
The actors had "endorsed" online betting apps allegedly involved in generating "illicit" funds, official sources had said.
However, the ED gave a fresh date of August 11 to actor Daggubati after he failed to appear on July 23, seeking deferment of the summons.
During their appearance, the agency is expected to record the statements of the actors under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The ED had taken cognisance of as many as five state police FIRs to register its case against these actors and a number of other celebrities and social media influencers.
These individuals are suspected to have "endorsed" online betting apps like Junglee Rummy, JeetWin, Lotus365, etc, for celebrity or endorsement fee, ED sources had said.
These platforms are alleged to have generated "illicit" funds, through illegal betting and gambling, worth crores of rupees, the sources had said.
Some of these "well-known" persons, the sources said, have earlier stated that they did not know the exact functioning of the apps and products dished out by them and claimed that they did not associate themselves with these platforms for any wrongdoing or illegal activity like betting.&nbsp;

Former Delhi minister and AAP leader Satyendar Jain appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday for questioning in a money laundering case linked to alleged corruption in the augmentation of some Delhi Jal Board sewage treatment plants, official sources said.
Jain, 60, reached the federal probe agency's office here around 11:15 am and his statement was recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) politician has held portfolios like Health, Industries, Power, Public Works Department, Home and Urban Development in the Arvind Kejriwal-led government.
This is the third money laundering investigation in which ED is probing the role of Jain.
He was arrested by the agency in 2022 and later chargesheeted in an alleged hawala transactions and possession of disproportionate assets case. Recently, the ED booked him in an alleged classroom construction scam case along with former deputy CM and AAP leader Manish Sisodia.
The investigation in the latest case pertains to allegations of corruption in the augmentation of some sewage treatment plants by the Delhi Jal Board. The ED had conducted searches in this case in July last year.
The money laundering probe stems from an FIR of the Delhi government anti-corruption branch (ACB) against a Hyderabad based company named Euroteck Environmental Pvt Ltd. and others alleging a scam in the DJB in the name of augmentation and upgradation of 10 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) at Pappankala, Nilothi, Najafgarh, Keshopur, Coronation Pillar, Narela, Rohini and Kondli.
According to the ACB, only three JV companies participated in the four tenders issued.
These four tenders valued at Rs 1,943 crore were awarded to various joint venture (JV) entities in October, 2022.
It said, as per the ED, the tendering conditions were made "restrictive" including adoption of IFAS ((Integrated Fixed-film Activated Sludge) technology to ensure that a select few entities could participate in the four tenders.
The verification of the tender documents shows that the initial cost of four tenders was about Rs 1,546 crore, which was revised to Rs 1,943 crore without following due process/project reports, according to the ED.
The contracts were awarded to three JVs at "inflated" rates which caused "substantive" loss to the exchequer and all the JVs sub-contracted the work related to the four tenders to the Hyderabad company, the agency claimed.

The Supreme Court on May 22 dismissed former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren's plea challenging his arrest in a money laundering case.
Soren's lawyer decided to withdraw the plea after the apex court raised tough questions on non-disclosure of key facts, that a similar plea, seeking interim bail and challenging his ED arrest, was filed before a trial court.
The court asked Soren's lawyer Kapil Sibal why they had not informed the bench that the trial court had already taken cognizance of it.
A vacation bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma allowed Soren&rsquo;s counsel Kapil Sibal to withdraw his plea after warning that if the court goes into the details of the case it will be &ldquo;damaging&rdquo; for the former chief minister.
&ldquo;Your conduct tells a lot. We expected your client to come up with candour but you suppressed material facts,&rdquo; the bench told Sibal &ldquo;Your conduct is not without blemish,&rdquo; the bench told Sibal, after he tried to defend Soren saying he is in custody and does not have any knowledge about the petitions being filed in courts.
&ldquo;He is not a layman,&rdquo; the bench observed and said it will dismiss his plea against arrest without going into the merit of the case. Sibal then agreed to withdraw the plea, which was allowed by the bench.
The ED had earlier told the apex court that Soren's arrest on January 31 has been upheld by the Jharkhand High Court and his regular bail application was dismissed by the trial court on May 13.
On May 13, Soren referred to the top court's order granting interim bail to Kejriwal in the money laundering case against him linked to the alleged Delhi excise scam and sought identical relief for himself.
In his appeal filed through advocate Praghya Baghel, the JMM leader said the high court had erred in dismissing his plea.
The ED has alleged that "huge amounts of proceeds of crime" were generated by Soren through manipulation of official records by showing dummy sellers and purchasers in the guise of forged/bogus documents to acquire huge parcels of land having value in crores of rupees.
The probe against Soren pertains to an 8.86-acre plot of land in Ranchi that the ED has alleged was illegally acquired by him.
Soren is currently lodged in judicial custody in Ranchi's Birsa Munda Central Jail.

Money Laundering Prevention:&nbsp;The union government notified an amendment to the Prevention of Money Laundering Rules (Maintenance of Records), 2005. As per the notification, the record keeping will see a further tightening of the rules in case of international transactions above Rs 50,000 to prevent terror financing.
<h3>International Transaction Scrutiny</h3>
The reporting entity of the international transaction above Rs 50,000 will have to identify clients, verify their identity and also ascertain purpose of the business if not well defined. The rules also enforce adequate safeguards on the confidentiality and use of information exchanged by the reporting entities. It also mandates safeguards to prevent tipping-off.

"Every reporting entity shall...identify its clients, verify their identity using reliable and independent sources of identification, obtain information on the purpose and intended nature of the business relationship, where applicable and take reasonable steps to understand the nature of the customer's business, and its ownership and control," the notification says.
Reporting entity means a banking company, financial institution, intermediary or a person carrying on a designated business or profession.
Along with identification and verification of the clients, the reporting entities also has to determine whether a client is acting on behalf of a beneficial owner, and identify the beneficial owner and take all steps to verify the identity of the beneficial owner, using reliable and independent sources of identification

The finance ministry introduced changes to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in which practicing chartered accountants, company secretaries, and cost and works accountants&nbsp; into money laundering law's ambit.
The Union Finance Ministry in a notification dated 3rd May, said that any financial transactions such as buying and selling of any immovable property, managing of client money, securities or other assets, management of bank, savings or securities accounts, organisation of contributions for the creation, operation or management of companies, limited liability partnerships or trusts, and buying and selling of business entities carried out by these professional accountants on behalf of their clients will be recognised under the PMLA.&nbsp;
As per Indian Express, the new changes have been made in the sub-clause (vi) of clause (sa) of sub-section (1) of section 2 of the PMLA, which defines different categories of persons covered under the law. The financial professionals who have obtained certificates of practice as chartered accountants, company secretaries, cost and work accountants would be defined as relevant persons for reporting transactions on behalf of their individual clients.
To incorporate more disclosures for non-governmental organisations, the government in March, widened the ambit of reporting entities under money laundering provisions. The centre also gave a definition for politically exposed persons under the PMLA in line with the FATF recommendations.
