A court in Maldives found the former president Abdulla Yameen guilty of money laundering and accepting a bribe and sentenced him to 11 years in prison.
The Criminal Court of Maldives also ordered Yameen, 63, to pay a fine of USD 5 million.
The court found Yameen guilty of accepting money for leasing an island owned by the government. He ruled the Indian ocean archipelago nation, known as an exclusive tourist destination, from 2013 to 2018.
It gave him a seven-year sentence for money laundering and four years for accepting a bribe.
This was not the first time Yameen was found guilty. In a separate case in 2019, Yameen was found guilty of money laundering and sentenced to five years in prison.

But two years later, the Supreme Court overturned the verdict, saying that evidence at the initial trial contained discrepancies and did not conclusively prove that Yameen had laundered USD 1 million in state money for personal gain.
Yameen lost a reelection bid in 2018 to current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
During his time of office, he was accused of corruption, muzzling the media and persecuting political opponents.

EU parliament suspends vice-president as lobbying scandal simmers

A vice president of the European Union's parliament was suspended from her duties on Saturday after being caught up in an investigation into influence peddling at the EU assembly allegedly involving officials from Qatar.
Eva Kaili, a 44-year-old Greek former TV news anchor, was suspended by her party in Greece and the EU assembly's Socialists and Democrats group Friday after Belgian police staged 16 raids across Brussels as part of a probe into corruption and money laundering at the parliament.
Four people were detained for questioning, and investigators recovered around 600,000 euros (USD 633,500) in cash and seized computer equipment and mobile telephones. Prosecutors did not identify the four but at least one was an EU lawmaker and one was a former member.

Authorities have not identified the Gulf country suspected of offering cash or gifts to officials at the parliament in exchange for political favours, but several members have linked the investigation to Qatar.
Parliament President Roberta Metsola &ldquo;has decided to suspend with immediate effect all powers, duties and tasks that were delegated to Eva Kaili in her capacity as vice president of the European Parliament,&rdquo; Metsola's spokesman said late Saturday.
The decision was taken &ldquo;in the light of the ongoing judicial investigations by Belgian authorities,&rdquo; he said, without providing further details.
The EU assembly is set to hold its last plenary session of the year in Strasbourg, France, beginning Monday.
The co-president of the Greens group, Philippe Lamberts, called for a parliamentary inquiry and for the issue to be put to debate this week, echoing calls from some other political groups.
The Greens &ldquo;strongly condemn corruption and bribery, cash and precious gifts cannot draw the political lines in this house,&rdquo; Lamberts said in a statement. He added that his group &ldquo;will vote against visa facilitation for Qatar in this week's plenary vote.&rdquo; The EU's executive branch, the European Commission, proposed in April that citizens from Qatar be granted short visa-free stays in the 27-nation bloc provided they have a biometric passport. Kaili's party in Greece, the Socialist Pasok-Movement for Change, publicly distanced itself from remarks she made in the EU parliament last month praising Qatar, which is currently hosting soccer's gala event, the World Cup.
She said the World Cup is &ldquo;proof, actually, of how sports diplomacy can achieve a historical transformation of a country with reforms that inspired the Arab world.&rdquo; Kaili also repeated what she said is an International Labour Organization view that &ldquo;Qatar is a frontrunner in labor rights.&rdquo; After Friday's raids, Belgian prosecutors said federal judicial police suspect that an undisclosed country in the Gulf region has been trying &ldquo;to influence the economic and political decisions of the European Parliament.&rdquo; It said this was allegedly done &ldquo;by paying large sums of money or offering large gifts to third parties with a significant political and/or strategic position within the European Parliament.&rdquo; In Italy on Saturday, Article One, a small center-left party, suspended former EU lawmaker Pier-Antonio Panzeri following reports he was caught up in the scandal.
In a statement posted on the party's Facebook page, Article One said it was &ldquo;disturbed&rdquo; by the reports but expressed full confidence in Belgian investigators. Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency ordered the freezing of 13 bank accounts of companies related to Suleman Shehbaz, the younger son of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in connection with a multi-million dollar money laundering case, a media report said on Sunday. 

Prime Minister Shehbaz and his sons &ndash; Hamza Shehbaz and Suleman &ndash; have been booked by the FIA for allegedly laundering over Rs 14 billion.

A special Pakistani court has ordered the freezing of 13 bank accounts of companies related to Suleman Shehbaz, the younger son of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in connection with a money laundering case, a media report said on Sunday.
The order was issued by the special court of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on September 7.
The investigating officer submitted to the court details of 13 bank accounts of various companies related to Suleman, the Dawn newspaper reported.
Prime Minister Shehbaz and his sons &ndash; Hamza Shehbaz (former Punjab chief minister) and Suleman &ndash; have been booked by the FIA for allegedly laundering over Rs 14 billion.
Suleman has been absconding in the UK since 2019. Shehbaz often says Suleman looks after the family business there. In his order, Presiding Judge Ijaz Hassan Awan has observed that since Suleman is still at large and has not surrendered before the court, therefore, in addition to his moveable and immovable properties, these 13 bank accounts have also been attached, the report said.
The judge also issued show-cause notices to the officials of different banks for not complying with an earlier order about the attachment of the accounts owned by two other proclaimed offenders.

The judge also summoned the bank officials on September 17 when the FIA prosecutor would also come up with the reply of the prosecution to the petitions of PM Shehbaz and his son Hamza, seeking acquittal in the case.
The indictment of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza was delayed early this week after their counsel told the court that their clients have filed a petition for their acquittal.
The counsel also sought one-time exemption from appearance for the Premier, saying he could not attend Wednesday's proceedings as he was busy in flood relief activities.
The Prime Minister had told the court in an earlier hearing that the "day of judgement may arrive but FIA will not be able to prove even a rupee worth of corruption against me."&nbsp;

A picture released by the federal agency showed bundles of seized Rs 500 currency notes along with a few in the denomination of Rs 2,000 and Rs 200 stacked together on a bed.
The searches were conducted at half-a-dozen locations of the gaming app named 'E-Nuggets' and its promoter identified as Aamir Khan and others, the Enforcement Directorate said in a statement.
"So far, more than Rs 7 crore in cash has been found at the premises and the counting is still in progress," the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said.

The money laundering case stems from an FIR filed by the Kolkata Police against the company and its promoters in February 2021.
This FIR was registered at the Park Street Police Station based on a complaint filed by the Federal Bank authorities before a court in Kolkata, the ED said.
Aamir Khan, son of Nesar Ahmed Khan, launched mobile gaming application E-Nuggets which was designed to defraud the public, the agency alleged.
"During the initial period, the users were rewarded with a commission and the balance in the wallet could be withdrawn hassle-free.
"This provided initial confidence among users, and they started investing bigger amounts for a greater percentage of commission and a greater number of purchase orders," it said.
The ED said that after collecting a "handsome amount" from the public, the withdrawal from the said app was stopped all of a sudden under one pretext or the other such as system upgradation and investigation by law enforcement agencies.
Later, all data, including profile information, was wiped off the app servers. It was then the users understood the ploy, the ED said.
Official sources said the agency is investigating if this app and its operators had links with other "Chinese controlled" apps that had been issuing loans at exorbitant rates to gullible persons and in many cases the loan takers ended their lives after they were threatened by these loan operators to pay up.&nbsp;

Sena MP Sanjay Raut's judicial custody extended by 14 days in money laundering case

A special Mumbai court extended Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut's judicial custody by another 14 days in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in the redevelopment of a Mumbai 'chawl', on Monday.
Raut was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on August 1 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the redevelopment of the Patra Chawl (row tenement) in suburban Goregaon.
He was produced before special PMLA judge MG Deshpande at the end of his judicial remand on Monday.
Raut will remain in jail till 19 September 2022.&nbsp;

A Pakistani terrorist who plotted attacks against India, claimed to have been dead for years, and suddenly arrested and jailed a few days ago.
In an interesting turn of events, terrorist Sajid Majeed Mir has been sentenced to 15 and a half years in prison. He was part of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack plot, and had been declared dead by Pakistani authorities earlier.
An anti-terrorism court in Lahore issued the verdict in early June. Mir had been incarcerated at Lahore's Kot Lakhpat prison since his arrest in April. An embarrassed Islamabad apparently tried to keep the case under wraps with the Counter Terrorism Department of Punjab Police not notifying the conviction.

Sajid Mir is a Lashkar-e-Taiba operative who is on the Most Wanted lists in India and USA. He acted as the 'project manager' of the 26/11 conspiracy, and handled the plotting and reconnaissance operations. Mir recruited David Headley, who had visited India to carry out surveys of the areas which were eventually attacked. Mir is also accused of conspiring to carry out attacks in Denmark.
He now joins other top Lashkar operatives in prison. These include chief of the terror organisation, Hafiz Saeed - the mastermind of the 26/11 attacks. He has been sentenced to 68 years in prison in terror financing cases. However, he is expected to spend very little time in jail as the sentences will run concurrently.
Another Lashkar terrorist in jail is Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. He acted as the operational commander of the 26/11 conspiracy. He is also in jail under terror financing charges.

So, why is Pakistan suddenly taking action against terrorists, after years of letting them roam free?
The country is currently trying to exit the 'grey list' of the Financial Action Task Force, or FATF. Islamabad was placed in the grey list in 2018 for allowing terror financing and money laundering from its territory. In order to exit the grey list, Pakistan has to take action against terrorists. To verify that effective action has truly been taken, FATF officials are slated to visit the country soon.
If Pakistan fails to convince FATF that it is cracking down on terrorist networks, then it might be relegated to the 'black list'. This would lead to imposition of sanctions. Foreign investments and loans will dry up, and trade with other countries will become extremely difficult.
Pakistan is already struggling with economic distress along with political instability.If the FATF decides to penalise Islamabad, it might just push the country into a Sri Lanka-like situation.
But it is also difficult to believe that a country which has encouraged terrorism for many decades, has suddenly decided to clean up its act. So, is the jailing of sinister terrorists justice, or just a show?

Sajid Mir is a Lashkar-e-Taiba operative who is on the Most Wanted lists in India and USA. He acted as the 'project manager' of the 26/11 conspiracy, and handled the plotting and reconnaissance operations. Mir recruited David Headley, who had visited India to carry out surveys of the areas which were eventually attacked. Mir is also accused of conspiring to carry out attacks in Denmark.
He now joins other top Lashkar operatives in prison. These include chief of the terror organisation, Hafiz Saeed - the mastermind of the 26/11 attacks. He has been sentenced to 68 years in prison in terror financing cases. However, he is expected to spend very little time in jail as the sentences will run concurrently.
Another Lashkar terrorist in jail is Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. He acted as the operational commander of the 26/11 conspiracy. He is also in jail under terror financing charges.

So, why is Pakistan suddenly taking action against terrorists, after years of letting them roam free?
The country is currently trying to exit the 'grey list' of the Financial Action Task Force, or FATF. Islamabad was placed in the grey list in 2018 for allowing terror financing and money laundering from its territory. In order to exit the grey list, Pakistan has to take action against terrorists. To verify that effective action has truly been taken, FATF officials are slated to visit the country soon.
If Pakistan fails to convince FATF that it is cracking down on terrorist networks, then it might be relegated to the 'black list'. This would lead to imposition of sanctions. Foreign investments and loans will dry up, and trade with other countries will become extremely difficult.
Pakistan is already struggling with economic distress along with political instability. If the FATF decides to penalise Islamabad, it might just push the country into a Sri Lanka-like situation.
But it is also difficult to believe that a country which has encouraged terrorism for many decades, has suddenly decided to clean up its act. So, is the jailing of sinister terrorists justice, or just a show?

According to reports, the money which was transferred over a period of one year was the tuition fees and admission costs collected from students. The accountant's Bihar based boyfriend is reportedly alumni of the same college. 
The matter came to light when the audit report of the college was being prepared. The institute filed a police complaint against the accountant, reports say.
