Families of the victims have claimed they were brutally assaulted by a mob, which threw them off a bridge on Mahanadi river.

Two cattle transporters died and another sustained serious injuries under suspicious circumstances after being allegedly chased by a mob in Chhattisgarh's Raipur district on Friday, police said.
So far there was no evidence to suggest it was a case of mob lynching and autopsy reports were awaited, said a senior official.
However, kin of the victims claimed they were brutally assaulted by a mob, which threw them off a bridge on Mahanadi river.
The incident took place in the wee hours under Arang police station area on Raipur-Mahasamund interdistrict border, Additional Superintendent of Police (Raipur rural) Kirtan Rathore told PTI.
On being alerted that three persons were lying injured below a 30-feet high bridge on the Mahanadi river, a police team was rushed to the spot, he said.
The truck in which they were ferrying cattle was found on the bridge.
Of the three men, one was found dead and the other two were in serious condition. They were admitted to a hospital in Mahasamund where one of them succumbed to his injuries, the official said.
The deceased were identified as Guddu Khan alias Mohamed Tehsin (35) and Chand Miya (33). The injured, Saddam Kureshi, was later shifted to a hospital in Raipur.
All three hailed from Uttar Pradesh. Khan hailed from Saharanpur while Chand Miya was from Shamli district, the ASP said.
As per preliminary investigation, the three were heading towards Raipur from Mahasamund with animals when some people chased the vehicle.
The truck, found stationary on the bridge later, has been seized and the animals have been shifted to a cow shelter, the police official said.
"Autopsy reports of the deceased men were awaited. We have asked doctors to provide a brief report as soon as possible. We are also checking the CCTV footage along the route. Till now we have no evidence to say it is mob lynching. Efforts are being made to identify those who chased them," ASP Rathore said.
The injured man was in no position to give a statement to police at present, the official said.
Asked if the bodies of the deceased had external injuries caused by assault, he said, "Injuries can be caused if they had fallen from a 30-feet high bridge and landed on the stones. Only a post-mortem report can tell how the injuries were caused." Speaking to reporters, Shoaib, a cousin of Chand and Saddam, however, said a mob had attacked the three persons.
He claimed he had got a call from Chand, adding that his friend Mohsin was called by Saddam when they were being attacked.
"Chand told me they were being attacked by a mob. But before he could provide any detail, the call got disconnected," Shoaib claimed.
In the second call to Mohsin, which lasted for 47 minutes, Saddam could be heard telling that his limbs were broken, Shoaib said.
"Saddam could be heard pleading with his attackers to spare him. I believe Saddam had put his phone in his pocket while he was calling (Mohsin) and it never got disconnected so everything could be heard clearly," he claimed.
Police officials said a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered and further probe was underway in the incident.&nbsp;

A local court in Hapur on Tuesday convicted all 10 people accused in the 2018 mob lynching case and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
The court of Additional District Judge (POCSO) Shweta Dixit, after hearing both the parties, convicted 10 people of killing 45-year-old Qasim and assaulting Samaydeen (62) on a false rumour of cow slaughter.
According to government counsel Vijay Chauhan, the court has also imposed a fine of Rs 58,000 each on Rakesh, Hariom, Yudhishthir, Rinku, Karanpal, Manish, Lalit, Sonu, Kaptan, and Mangeram of Dhaulana&rsquo;s Bajhaida village.
The prosecution argued that the victim's side does not have any enmity against the accused and only seek justice. They had also requested the court not to give death sentence to the convicts.
In June 2018, a mob had lynched Qasim, a resident of Bajhaida village, accusing him of slaughtering a banned animal.
Samaydeen was also assaulted on a false rumour of cow slaughter, but he survived.
The police registered a false FIR giving the incident a motorcycle accident angle but after Samaydeen moved Supreme Court, the investigation was brought on track, Chauhan said.
Samaydeen had filed a writ petition in Supreme Court in 2018 and the court had directed provision of security and recording of statement under section 164 CrPC, and directed IG (Meerut Zone) to supervise the investigation.

All India Pasmanda Muslim Mahaz or AIPMM has released a report claiming that 95% of the victims of mob lynching and excesses by government bulldozers belong to the Pasmanda community.
The report was prepared on the basis of recently released Bihar caste survey. &nbsp;
The AIPMM demanded a strict law against mob lynching and "bulldozer culture".
It said that the Collector and SP of the district where such an incident occurs should be made accountable for it. It also demanded compensation and a job for the victim's kin.
The report also seeks reservation for Pasmanda Muslims in private sectors, citing their poor socio-economic conditions.
The report also criticised RSS, BJP and AIMIM. &ldquo;We consider the politics of the RSS, BJP and AIMIM to be complementary to each other,&rdquo; says the report.

According to Indian Express, the victim, Irshad Mohammad, was passing through the Ramlila ground on the outskirts of Luhari village when the incident occurred.
The verbal row over the minor accident turned violent as a group of people beat Mohammad who fell to the ground and hit his head on a stone.
Police said five accused have been identified and will be arrested soon.
Following Mohammad&rsquo;s death, his family members and locals rushed to the spot where both groups attacked each other. Police used mild force to disperse the crowd.

The govt has proposed to make mob lynching a punishable offence with the punishment ranging from a minimum of seven years in jail to a death sentence.  

In a landmark overhaul of colonial-era criminal laws, the Centre on Friday introduced in the Lok Sabha three bills to replace the IPC, CrPC and Indian Evidence Act,&nbsp;

The govt has proposed to make mob lynching a punishable offence with the punishment ranging from a minimum of seven years in jail to a death sentence.&nbsp;
The proposal is part of the 3 bills introduced by Home Minister Amit Shah in Lok Sabha to replace the current criminal laws - the Indian Penal Code, the Criminal Procedure Code and the Indian Evidence Act.&nbsp;
Mob lynching is part of the laws dealing with murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill which will replace the Indian Penal code.&nbsp;
Provision 101(2) reads, "when a group of five or more persons acting in concert commits murder on the ground of race, caste or community, sex, place of birth, language, personal belief or any other ground each member of such group shall be punished with death or with imprisonment for life or imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than seven years, and shall also be liable to fine."&nbsp;
Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Bill, 2023; Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Bill, 2023; and Bharatiya Sakshya (BS) Bill, 2023 that will replace the Indian Penal Code, 1860, Criminal Procedure Act, 1898, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 respectively.
The BNS bill provides for several changes in the existing provisions including that of defamation, attempt to commit suicide and expanded the scope of offence against women pertaining to sexual intercourse by employing "deceitful means".
Shah said the changes were done to provide speedy justice and create a legal system that keeps contemporary needs and aspirations of the people. Everyone will get justice in a maximum of three years once the new laws are passed, he added.
"I can assure the House that these bills will transform our criminal justice system. The aim will not be to punish, it will be to provide justice. Punishment will be given to create a sentiment of stopping crime," Shah said while noting that the laws made by the Britishers were full of signs of slavery aimed at punishing those opposed to their rule.
The minister also urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to refer the three bills for examination by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs.

Pakistan: Mob storms police station, lynch man accused of blasphemy

Residents of the area claimed that the man &mdash; who had returned after spending two years in jail &mdash; used to practice witchcraft by pasting his ex-wife's picture on holy books, Geo News reported.

A violent mob lynched a blasphemy-accused man after storming a police station in Punjab province of Pakistan on Saturday, police said.
A police officer said a mob stormed the police station at Warburton, Nankana Sahib, some 80kms from Lahore, and took custody of Waris Issa, who was arrested for alleged desecration of the holy book, stripped him naked, and dragged him in the streets before beating him to death.
Residents of the area claimed that the man &mdash; who had returned after spending two years in jail &mdash; used to practice witchcraft by pasting his ex-wife's picture on holy books, Geo News reported.
Several video clips of the incident also went viral on social media.
In one video, the mob, including young children, could be seen scaling the large gates of the police station.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered action against those involved.
He also questioned why the police failed to stop the violent mob and directed the Inspector General of police in Punjab to ensure law and order in the district.
"The rule of law should be ensured. No one should be allowed to influence the law," Sharif emphasised.
He said that the first priority of the institutions responsible for peace and order is peace and that it should always come first.
Punjab IGP Dr Usman Anwar suspended DSP Nankana Circle Nawaz Virk and SHO Warburton Feroze Bhatti from service.
The IGP also ordered DIGs Ameen Bukhari and Raja Faisal to reach the spot and submit a detailed report after identifying the responsible and those guilty of negligence.
"No one is allowed to take the law into his hands, no matter how influential he is, therefore strict departmental and legal action will be taken against those responsible for the incident and the perpetrators of negligence and professional misconduct," the IGP said in a statement.
In December 2021, a mob in Sialkot city of Punjab tortured a Sri Lankan man, who was working as a manager at a local factory, to death over blasphemy allegations. The incident drew widespread condemnation.
An anti-terrorism court in Lahore last year handed down the punishment to 88 suspects involved in Sri Lankan citizen Piryantha Kumara&rsquo;s lynching case. Six of them were sentenced to death.

Around 3 pm of Sunday, when one of the prisoners went to a tea shop to buy food, he was identified by the locals and the entire area was alerted, village headman R Rabon told PTI.
A large number of people turned up and chased the group of prisoners to a nearby forest. A purported video of the incident showed angry villagers, armed with sticks, apprehending the prisoners and beating them mercilessly.
Four prisoners died in the attack while one managed to escape, Rabon said.

Inspector-General of Prisons JK Marak said, "It is true that a group of villagers apprehended four of the escaped prisoners and subsequently lynched them. Our officers have reached the area and I am awaiting more information." Officials said that Ramesh Dkhar managed to escape from the mob, while the sixth prisoner was nowhere to be seen during the attack.
"Two prisoners were arrested in the murders of taxi drivers in August, police said.
Superintendent of Police of West Jai&ntilde;tia Hills BK Marak said police officers are at the spot and "conducting spot inquiry and other necessary formalities".
"A case has been registered in the Jowai police station against the prison staff and five of them have been arrested so far. Among the arrested prison staffers are one head warden and four wardens," he said.
