Amid a snowballing controversy, Karnataka police arrested Lingayat seer Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru. The chief pontiff of Murugha Math was arrested on charges of allegedly sexually abusing school girls.
An FIR was filed against Sharanaru on 27 August 2022 after two girls contacted an NGO in Mysuru, and claimed that they had been sexually abused. The NGO had approached authorities and filed a complaint.
The religious leader has been booked under sections from POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, the Indian Penal Code, and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Sharanaru has called the allegations a part of a long-drawn conspiracy against him. He had said that he was a law-abiding citizen, and would cooperate with the investigation.
The gap between the registration of FIR and his arrest had sparked protests in Karnataka.

Four men were arrested on the charges of sexually abusing four minor girls after trespassing a convent in southern Kerala, police said on Friday.
Two of the accused were held when a night patrol team of the police noticed their presence in an area near the nunnery situated in a rural area a day ago.
Their alleged trespassing of the compound of a religious institution and the motive behind it were revealed during their interrogation.
Based on the inputs provided by the accused, a woman police officer visited the institution and took statements of the minor girls and it was disclosed that they had been subjected to sexual abuse for quite some time.
Two others were arrested on the basis of the statements of the victims, they said.
The arrested persons have been charged under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act and IPC Section 460 (All persons jointly concerned in lurking house-trespass or house-breaking by night).

In yet another attack on a minor, an 11 standard girl was stabbed by a 22-year-old man in broad daylight. The incident occurred in Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu.
The 16-year-old girl was walking home after writing her exams when the man, identified as Kesavan, stabbed her in over ten places, including her neck. 
Witnesses to the incident sprung into action and admitted her to a nearby hospital, where she has been under intensive care. 
The police say that the accused had tried to marry the minor last year, following which he had been arrested under the POCSO Act. He had been released from prison recently and he did this to exact vengeance.
According to reports the man escaped after the attack and the police are yet to nab him.

The Mumbai Police have arrested an Ola cab driver from Goregaon for allegedly molesting a 15-year-old girl and making obscene gestures towards her on May 25. The case was registered by the Aarey Police Station. The accused has been sent to police custody till 30 May, news agency ANI quoted police sub inspector Sachin Panchal as saying.
The accused has been identified as 29-year-old Murari Kumar Singh, who stays in Goregaon and hails from Bihar. We are also finding out if he has any prior cases against him," Panchal said.

A case has been registered against six people, including a station house office (SHO) for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Lalitpur district.
The matter has been registered under Pali police station, where the minor was lured by four youth and was taken to Bhopal on April 22 and allegedly raped her. The teenager somehow escaped and reached her home and went to the police to register a complaint where the station in-charge allegedly raped the teenager before handing her over to the Childline Welfare committee, the police said.
When the teenager was questioned by the ChildLine officials, the victim narrated the whole incident, after which the ChildLine welfare committee reached out to the Lalitpur Superintendent of police about the crime. Following this, the SP immediately filed a case of gang-rape against six people including SHO Tilakdhari Saroj.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Nikhil Pathak said that the SHO has been suspended and a team has been constituted for the arrest of all the accused.

The Samajwadi Party attacked the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government over the incident, asking where should "daughters go" and "whom to trust" in this government.
"The biggest question in the BJP government is whom to trust and whom to not. A minor, who reached the police station to file rape complaint was raped by the SHO himself.
"Now the CM should tell, where should victim daughters go? Security of the victim should be ensured and strict action should be taken against those found guilty," the party said in a tweet in Hindi.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav is expected to go to Lalitpur to meet the rape survivor's family.
Attacking the state government in series of tweets, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, "The incident of gangrape with a 13-year-old girl in Lalitpur and then rape by a police officer after taking a complaint shows how the real reforms of law and order are being suppressed in the noise of "bulldozer". If police station are not safe for women, where will they go with their complaints." "Has the UP government seriously thought about increasing the deployment of women in police stations, making them safer for women? The Congress party had in its women's manifesto had made many important points for women security..Today its Lalitpur...", she said.
To prevent such incidents, serious steps should be taken for women's safety and women friendly law system, she added.&nbsp;
