Two suspected militants were killed when police foiled a major terror attack bid in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, an official said on Monday.
The counter terrorism department (CTD) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police eliminated the terrorists during an overnight intelligence based operation in Peshawar city's Urmar Payan neighbourhood, once home to one of the largest Afghan refugee camps, the official said.
The CTD said the suspects, a suicide bomber and the handler, were planning a large-scale attack on a sensitive target in the city when its team carried out the raid.
A significant cache of weapons, ammunition, a suicide vest, an SMG rifle, a pistol, and several rounds of live ammunition were recovered from their possession, the official said.
He said Munir Ahmed, the suicide bomber, was being traced by intelligence services since November last year.
The CTD official said Ahmed was a wanted fugitive from Nangarhar in Afghanistan and had crossed into Pakistan from Khost.
The official said a special investigation team was formed to probe the matter.
According to Islamabad-based Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), Pakistan saw a 5 per cent increase in attacks in May in comparison to April even as militancy in the country largely remained contained despite the regional geopolitical climate.
The PICSS said in its monthly security assessment, May recorded 85 militant attacks, a marginal rise from 81 in April, killing 113 people, including 52 security forces personnel, 46 civilians, 11 militants, and four members of peace committees.
Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remained the most affected provinces, accounting for 82 of the 85 attacks in Pakistan.

Security forces have arrested six militants belonging to various proscribed outfits in Manipur and seized arms and ammunition from their possession, police said on Wednesday.
Three members of the banned Peoples' Liberation Army (PLA) were apprehended from Langmeidong, Elangkhangpokpi and Kakching Ningthou Pareng area in Kakching district, they said.
The security forces also arrested an active cadre of the Kangleipak Communist Party (Taibanganba) from Langthabal Khunou in Thoubal, a member of the outlawed KCP (Apunba) group from Sawombung area in Imphal East, and a cadre of KCP-PSC (Politburo Standing Committee) from Lamlongei Sabal Leikai in Imphal West.
The arrests were made on Monday and Tuesday, a police officer said.
Arms and ammunition, including pistols, rifles and bombs were also recovered from their possession, he added.

In response to increased terror activities, Kashmir's security forces intensified operations, neutralizing six terrorists in recent encounters.

After the April 22 Pahalgam attack, security forces turned the focus of their anti-terror operations to specific areas in south Kashmir and eliminated six terrorists in the past three days, officials said on Friday.
"The security agencies reviewed their strategy according to the situation in the wake of terror activities in the last one month and our intensified focus was on operations," said V K Birdi, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir.
The IGP was addressing a press conference with General Officer Commanding, Victor Force, Major General Dhananjay Joshi at the headquarters of the Victor Force here in south Kashmir's Pulwama district.
Birdi said that due to the intensified focus and coordination between various security agencies, two successful operations were conducted in which six terrorists were killed. He termed their elimination "significant achievements".
"These successful operations were possible because of the coordination and synergy among the security and intelligence agencies. We are duty-bound to end any terror activity in Kashmir and we are always ready to stop such acts," the IGP said.
The encounters took place in the Keller area of Shopian and the Nadar area of Tral in Pulwama on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. Three terrorists each were killed in the two operations.
Victor Force GOC Major Joshi said immediately after the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives, the security forces designated several areas as focus areas.
"We had intelligence inputs that terrorists had moved to the higher reaches after the melting of snow. Keeping that in mind, our domination parties had continuously been deployed in the higher reaches, mountainous areas and forests," he said.
The security agencies received an intelligence input about the presence of terrorists in the Keller area of Shopian on the night of May 12, Major Joshi said.
"So the domination party that was deployed there for some time, relocated itself and in a focused way closed in on the area. They challenged the terrorists who fired at them, leading to an encounter in which three terrorists were neutralised," he said.
About the Tral encounter, the GoC said the operation took place in a different terrain.
"We had inputs and cordoned off the village. The terrorists took positions in different houses and fired. Our challenge was the safe evacuation of innocent civilians including children. Then systematically searches were conducted one by one in the houses and the three terrorists were neutralised in separate places," he added.
The successful conduct of both the operations shows that the security forces will find terrorists wherever they are and neutralise them, Major Joshi said.
Of the six slain terrorists, the main one was Shahid Kuttay, who was involved in major attacks. The attacks included one on a sarpanch in Heerpora, Shopian on May 18 last year and the firing incident at Danish Resort on April 8 last year in which two German tourists and a driver were injured, the officer said.
"Kuttay was also involved in fundraising and other activities," he added.
Neutralisation of both the modules has dealt a blow to terror outfits and will help in stopping terror activities here and bring peace, Maj Joshi said.&nbsp;

They said a sniper is believed to have targeted the truck from the front before the other terrorists sprayed bullets and lobbed grenades on it.
Five soldiers were killed and one injured after the terrorists attacked the lone Army truck, which was carrying eatables for iftar to a nearby village, in the dense forest area of Bhata Dhurian late on Thursday afternoon and the vehicle caught fire.

A total of 1,179 Bru militants belonging to two outfits surrendered in Assam's Hailakandi district and laid down 350 firearms on Monday, police said.
Additional Director General of Police (Special Branch) Hiren Chandra Nath said that insurgents who surrendered belonged to the United Democratic Liberation Front of Barak Valley (UDLF-BV) and Bru Revolutionary Army of Union (BRAU).
The two outfits that were active mostly in areas along the Assam-Mizoram border laid down AK series rifles, M16 rifles and other firearms besides over 400 cartridges.

Altogether 634 members of BRAU, led by Rajesh Charki, and 545 UDLF-BV militants, headed by Dhanyaram Reang, surrendered during the day, Nath said.
"The peace process with these two groups had been underway since 2017. There were some differences, but under the guidance of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, we could convince them to come to the negotiating table." "Other formalities and rehabilitation process will begin soon. We will take the process forward in such a manner that no new militant group is formed in the area in future," the senior police officer said.
The militants, who were already in ceasefire with security forces, formally laid down their arms before Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary and Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika.
Talking to reporters after the ceremony, Daimary said, &ldquo;The government will be adequately addressing their concerns and provide them with funds for development. I also urge all other youth who are still in armed groups to abjure violence.&rdquo; Hazarika said that the surrendered militants raised mostly developmental issues and the government will ensure that the genuine demands are met.
BRAU &lsquo;commander-in-chief&rsquo; Charki said that they are happy to come overground and reiterated the demand for an autonomous economic council for the Bru community.
He claimed that most Bru-inhabited villages near the Assam-Mizoram border areas are yet to see development and sought schemes from the government for the betterment of these areas.
The BRAU also submitted a charter of demands addressed to the chief minister, seeking land for the community under the Forest Rights Act, 2006, and Scheduled Tribe (Plain) status in the state.
Their other demands include government jobs for the youth of the Bru community and developmental works such as electrification and construction of roads, schools and hospitals in the area predominantly inhabited by the community.
For the surrendered BRAU cadres, they have demanded ex-gratia for the ex-militants as well as families of those killed over the years, lifting of criminal cases against the cadres and entitling them benefits under Prime Minister Awas Yojana.

After successful negotiations, the kidnappers demanding the release of their accomplices, including those involved in the gruesome murder of foreigners in the Nanga Parbat area and other terrorist incidents in Diamer, later on Saturday released the minister, as well as the tourists, showed a video released by minister Abaidullah Baig after his release was confirmed.
The clip showed the minister saying that he was kidnapped while on his way from Islamabad to Gilgit when militants blocked the road to press authorities for the release of their accomplices from jail.
Habibur Rahman, GB’s most wanted militant commander who was accused of killing 10 foreigners in Nanga Parbat, and his accomplices blocked the road in Thak village of Chilas in Diamer on Friday around 4 pm, leaving travellers on both sides stranded, the Dawn newspaper quoted a source as saying.
Sources said the militants were demanding the release of their accomplices, including those involved in the gruesome murder of foreigners in the Nanga Parbat area and other terrorist incidents in Diamer.
The militants have also demanded the "imposition of Islamic laws, with no women sports activities" in the province.
However, it is unclear whether or not the demands of the militants were met.
The incident surfaced as Pakistan senators from both sides of the aisle on Friday sounded an alarm over the surge in terrorist activities by the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), while a senator sought a briefing over a recent threat alert issued by the interior ministry about the heightened risk of terrorist attacks by the banned outfit.

The US Air Force said Saturday it was the subject of a “propaganda attack” by a previously unheard-of Iraqi militant group that falsely claimed it had launched a drone attack targeting American troops at an air base in Kuwait.
The statement by the Air Force's 386th Air Expeditionary Wing came hours after the group calling itself Al-Waretheen, or “The Inheritors," put out an online statement claiming that on Aug. 12, it targeted Kuwait's Ali Al Salem Air Base. The statement included a video showing a drone being launched from a stand, but offered no evidence of an attack or any damage done at the base.
The statement claimed the alleged attack aimed to avenge the US drone strike that killed a prominent Iranian Revolution Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad in January 2020.
The air base is located a few dozen kilometers (miles) from the Iraqi border.
“The misinformation falsely stated an Iranian militia group used (drones) to carry out an attack on base,” the Air Force statement to The Associated Press said. “No such attack occurred.” The statement suggests the U.S. believes that Al-Waretheen is likely an Iranian group, though it described itself as Iraqi.
The Air Force added that the online claim “only aims to deceive their audience in believing a lie" and that the Air Force and Kuwait “continue to project air power throughout the region without disruption.” Kuwait, a small, oil-rich nation bordering Iraq and Saudi Arabia also near Iran, is considered a major non-NATO ally of the United States. Kuwait and the U.S. have had a close military partnership since America launched the 1991 Gulf War to expel Iraqi troops after Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein invaded the country.

A minister in the BJP government in Assam is in trouble for apologising to a terrorist. Assam's Tea Tribes and Employment Minister Sanjoy Kishan was issued a show-cause notice on May 28 by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, as per news agency PTI.
Kishan is in trouble for apologising to Paresh Barua, chief of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent, or ULFA-I, a banned organisation. Kishan has been given 3 days to explain his apologetic comments.
The minister had called Barua a "liar", leading to threats from ULFA-I that it would ensure that Kishan is "boycotted" in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts. Subsequently, the minister told the media that he had no intention to "hurt" Barua, and he sought forgiveness if he did so unknowingly.
The ULFA-I then withdrew its boycott threat. The ULFA-I is currently observing a unilateral ceasefire which was declared soon after Sarma became CM.

A minister in the BJP government in Assam is in trouble for apologising to a terrorist. Assam's Tea Tribes and Employment Minister Sanjoy Kishan was issued a show-cause notice on May 28 by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, as per news agency PTI.

Militants on Saturday shot dead a policeman in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.
J&K Police head constable Ali Mohammad was fired upon by militants at around 5.35 pm near his residence at Hasanpora in the Bijbehara area of Anantnag, a police official said.
He said Mohammad was shifted to a hospital in critical condition where he succumbed.
The area has been cordoned off and a hunt launched to nab the assailants, the official said.

A policeman was injured after militants on Sunday fired upon a police party in the&nbsp;Khanyar area of&nbsp;Srinagar.
The&nbsp;officer, who is said to be critically injured, has been shifted to SMHS hospital for medical&nbsp;treatment.
Officials said the terrorists fired upon a police naka party at Khanyar resulting in injuries to the probationary&nbsp;sub-inspector.
Meanwhile, the whole area has been sealed and a search operation has been launched to catch the militants.

One police personnel was injured in the militant attack on a police party at Khanyar in the Old Srinagar city.

A police officer died after militants shot him point blank&nbsp;in the the&nbsp;Khanyar area of&nbsp;Srinagar&nbsp;on Sunday.&nbsp;
The officer,&nbsp;Arshid Ahmad, was critically injured and was shifted to a hospital for treatment but he succumbed to his injuries.&nbsp;
CCTV&nbsp;footage of the incident shows the probationary&nbsp;sub-inspector walking when a man comes up from behind and fires multiple shots at him before fleeing.
Other policemen then rush to check on their colleague and take him away.&nbsp;
Militants in Srinagar have regularly been using small arms to target security forces in hit and run attacks especially since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

In the first outreach of its kind, top Army and police brass on Tuesday interacted with over 80 families of militants active in the Kashmir Valley, urging them to &ldquo;guide their wards back into society&rdquo;.
It was the first time top police and Army officers directly interacted with family members of militants in south Kashmir, that has seen unabated violence in the last five years. PTI reported that the families that came were from south Kashmir districts such as Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam and Anantnag.
At the interaction, General Officer Commanding, 15 Corps, Lt Gen D P Pandey, requested the families to convince their children to give up guns and return to the mainstream. He also assured the families that the forces would work with the youth who shun arms, and &ldquo;address their concerns and help them join the mainstream&rdquo;.
Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar and GoC, Victor Force, Maj Gen Rashim Bali were among those who interacted with the families in south Kashmir&rsquo;s Shopian.
The army commander also cautioned the families against the "white-collar" terrorists roaming among the general masses. He said "while the children of these while-collar terrorists are enjoying and studying in the rest of the country, your children are targeted by these people".

According to the police spokesperson, Pandita was a "protected person" and had been provided with two Personal Security Officers (PSOs) and a secured accommodation in Srinagar.
At the time of the incident, Pandita was without any PSO as he defied the standard operating procedure (SoP) and went to his native village in the south Kashmir district without his security.
