Mike Pence on Capitol riots: Donald Trump's words were reckless

In an exclusive interview with 'World News Tonight' anchor David Muir, he said he had made it very clear to Trump that he did not have the authority to overturn the election result

Former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has spoken about the events surrounding the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021, and his communications with former U.S. President Donald Trump, leading up to, during and after that day.
In an exclusive interview with 'World News Tonight' anchor David Muir, he said he had made it very clear to Trump that he did not have the authority to overturn the result of the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
Trump had demanded that Pence do this based on claims of electoral fraud that were made without evidence.
However, at a rally on that day, Trump told supporters that Pence could make that decision. "Mike Pence is going to have to come through for us. And if he doesn't, that will be a sad day for our country," Trump said.
"The President's words were reckless and his actions were reckless. President's words that day at the rally endangered me and my family and everyone at the Capitol building," Pence replied when asked about Trump's statement.
Pence said that several times, his secret service detail tried to evacuate him from the Capitol, but he refused to leave.
Pence was also asked about a Tweet from former President Trump, sent at 2:24pm on January 6th, that said "Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done."
He said the statement had "angered him", adding that he felt the President's words were "reckless".
"It was clear he decided to be part of the problem," he said.
Pence said Trump did not call him on January 6th, 2021 to check on his well-being, and that he did not hear from anyone in the White House, but that Democratic congressional leaders had reached out.
He also said he first spoke to Trump in the Oval Office, five days later, and said Trump had expressed remorse over the Capitol riot.
"At one point he simply said, with his voice much more faint than it had ever been said: 'What if we hadn't had the rally?'"

He said that as Trump returned to the rhetoric he'd used before January 6th, telling his supporters that the former VP could have overturned the election and expressing support for the Capitol rioters, Pence decided that he needed to separate himself from Trump.
Pence was also asked if Trump should ever be president again. "I think that's up to the American people. But I think we'll have better choices in the future," he said.

When a student asked him if he would support Trump if the former president won the Republican nomination, Pence deadpanned.

Pence avoided criticizing former President Donald Trump for his actions that day, even though the House committee investigating the attack has heard testimony that President Trump knew the crowd at his rally had weapons, but still directed them to go to the Capitol.
"January 6th was a tragic day," Pence said.
"I thank the members in both political parties. Staying at their post, coming back to work and completing the peaceful transfer of power, and making what began as a day of tragedy, a triumph of freedom," he said.
Pence also show several flashes of humor.When a student asked him if he would support Trump if the former president won the Republican nomination, Pence deadpanned, "Well, there might be somebody else I'd prefer more."

And when he was asked if he could say something positive about President Joe Biden, Pence paused for a moment, then looked at his watch and said, "Gee, look at the time!"
Moments later, he reflected on the transition that occured when he and Trump were coming to power.
"I will also say that when I was elected vice president during the transition, President Biden, and Jill, were very, very gracious to us, and I'll always be grateful for that."

It comes as the former vice president has made stops in other early voting states as he takes steps toward mounting a 2024 White House campaign.
Pence also weighed in on Republican US Rep. Liz Cheney's primary defeat earlier in the week to a rival backed by Trump. Cheney, who is arguably Trump's most prominent Republican critic, has called the former president &ldquo;a very grave threat and risk to our republic" and further raised his ire through her role as vice chair of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol.
&ldquo;My reaction was, the people of Wyoming have spoken," said Pence, who was targeted at the Capitol that day by angry rioters, including some who chanted, &ldquo;Hang Mike Pence!&rdquo; &ldquo;And, you know, I accept their judgment about the kind of representation they want on Capitol Hill.&rdquo; Pence said he has &ldquo;great respect" for Cheney's father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, who served two terms under President George W. Bush.
&ldquo;And I appreciate the conservative stance Congresswoman Cheney has taken over the years,&rdquo; Pence continued. &ldquo;But I've been disappointed in the partisan taint of the Jan. 6 committee from early on.&rdquo; Pence's aides said the committee contacted his legal team months ago to see if he would be willing to testify. Although Pence has said he would give &ldquo;due consideration&rdquo; to cooperating, he was adamant that the historic nature of such participation must be warranted and agreed upon.

&ldquo;Beyond my concerns about the partisan nature of the January 6 committee, there are profound constitutional issues that have to be considered,&rdquo; he said. "No vice president has ever been summoned to testify before the Congress of the United States.&rdquo; Speaking further about the search of Mar-a-Lago, the former vice president raised the possibility, as he has previously, that the investigation was politically motivated and called on Attorney General Merrick Garland to disclose more details on what led authorities to conduct the search.
&ldquo;The concern that millions of Americans felt is only going to be resolved with daylight,&rdquo; Pence said Friday. &ldquo;I know that's not customary in an investigation. But this is an unprecedented action by the Justice Department, and I think it merits unprecedented transparency.&rdquo; The Jan. 6 insurrection marked the first in a number of public breaks between Trump and his once devout No. 2. But Pence has been careful not to alienate Republicans who have supported Trump but might be looking for another candidate in the 2024 election.
Despite his reluctance to criticize the former president, Pence has occasionally spoken out against Trump, criticizing the attack at the US Capitol and more recently urging his fellow Republicans to stop lashing out at the FBI over the search of Mar-a-Lago.
&ldquo;The Republican Party is the party of law and order,&rdquo; Pence said Wednesday at a political breakfast in New Hampshire. &ldquo;Our party stands with the men and women who stand on the thin blue line at the federal and state and local level, and these attacks on the FBI must stop." Pence said Friday that he would make a decision early next year about whether to run for the White House, a move that his aides have said will be independent of what Trump decides to do.
