An Olive Ridley turtle tagged in Odisha journeyed 3,600 km to nest in Maharashtra. This unprecedented migration calls for enhanced research into turtle behavior along the Bay of Bengal.

Tagged at Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary on Odisha coast around four years ago, an Olive Ridley Turtle swam around 3,600 km through the Bay of Bengal before being spotted at a Maharashtra beach, a senior Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) scientist said.
The turtle, which was tagged on March 18, 2021, was located on a beach in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, where it had arrived for nesting and laying eggs, the scientist said.
Basudev Tripathy, a senior ZSI scientist, said this was first recorded instance of a turtle that had previously nested on Odisha&rsquo;s coast migrating such a long distance to lay eggs.
"Generally, turtles tagged at Odisha nesting grounds to study their migration behaviour do not travel such long distances," Tripathy said.
"Earlier, some tagged turtles were rescued from the northern coast of Sri Lanka by fishermen. However, there has been no history of turtles tagged in the eastern statenesting in Sri Lanka," he added.
On migration patterns, Tripathy said sea turtles typically migrate between foraging and nesting grounds.
"Male and female turtles migrate to breeding areas, usually returning to the beaches where they were born," he said.
"To identify and strategise the effective protection of Olive Ridley turtles&rsquo; feeding and breeding grounds along the Bay of Bengal, further study and tagging of these delicate marine animals is the need of the hour," he added.
The turtle&rsquo;s unprecedented nesting in western India has drawn scientific attention.
"Given that a tagged turtle from the Odisha coast was found nesting for the first time on Maharashtra&rsquo;s coast, a more elaborate scientific study into the behaviour of these itinerant marine species is now in focus," Tripathy added.
"Earlier tagged Olive Ridley sea turtles travelled around 1000 km in the sea to reach north Sri Lanka sea within a month from Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary. But they did not nest there," they said.
On most occasions, such turtles returned to Odisha for mass nesting. However, the turtle tagged by ZSI in 2021 was found nesting at Ratnagiri beach in Maharashtra.
"This female turtle undertook an arduous journey of not less than 3,600 km to nest at the Maharashtra site," Tripathy added.
Tagging studies have established Odisha as the most favoured nesting destination for Olive Ridley turtles, with 'arribada' (mass nesting) only recorded at Gahirmatha, Rushikulya and Devi river beaches in the state.
"This makes it crucial to undertake large-scale tagging of nesting turtles annually to further understand their behaviour," he said.
The Odisha Forest Department began turtle tagging in 1999, tagging around 1,000 turtles. Two of those were later sighted off the Sri Lankan coast. The initiative was paused for several years before being resumed by ZSI in 2021. Between 2021 and 2024, around 12,000 turtles have been tagged at the Gahirmatha and Rushikulya river mouth nesting sites, according to official sources.
Mass nesting on Odisha&rsquo;s coast remains impressive. This year alone, around 10 lakh turtles arrived at the state&rsquo;s nesting beaches for arribada.
"Tagging needs to be conducted on a much larger scale," Tripathy said.
"Currently, around 3,000 turtles are tagged annually. But we believe at least one lakh turtles need to be tagged to gain deeper insight into their reproductive biology, movements, growth rates, migratory routes, and foraging zones," he added.

Files of 64 people with high risk of migration 'disappear' from French Embassy in Delhi

The CBI has alleged that accused Shokeen and Mandal facilitated their visa for Rs 50,000 each without the knowledge and approval of the visa department Head at the embassy and displaced the records.

Files related to Schengen Visa of 64 people having a high risk of migration have "disappeared" from the French Embassy here in a massive fraud allegedly committed by its two former employees booked by the CBI recently, officials said Monday.
Former embassy officials Shubham Shokeen and Aarti Mandal allegedly made Rs 32,00,000, charging Rs 50,000 per visa by clearing files of questionable candidates, they said.
It is alleged that Shokeen and Mandal handled 484 visa files between January 1 and May 6, of which 64 files pertained to individuals having a "high risk" of migration, like young farmers or unemployed persons from Punjab who had never travelled before and lacked the profile to hold a Schengen Visa. &nbsp; The agency suspects that Mandal and Shokeen allegedly destroyed the documents and files from the visa department to leave no traces of this illicit activity, they said.
The CBI on Friday last conducted searches in Delhi, Patiala, Gurdaspur and Jammu, during which documents and electronic evidence like laptops, mobile phones and suspicious passports etc., have been recovered.

Britain's Indian-origin Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, has cast doubts over a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) with India over the issue of migration and branded Indians as the "largest group of people who overstay" their visas in the UK.
Expressing concerns over what she feared would be an "open borders" migration policy in an interview with ‘The Spectator’ on Thursday, the senior minister seemed to indicate that she would not offer Cabinet backing to a trade deal that offers India greater visa concessions.
It would pitch her in a possible clash with British Prime Minister Liz Truss, who wants an FTA with India – now in the final round of negotiations – within the Diwali deadline set by her predecessor Boris Johnson.
"I have concerns about having an open borders migration policy with India because I don’t think that’s what people voted for with Brexit,” Braverman told the British weekly news magazine.
Asked about visa flexibility for students and entrepreneurs under an India-UK FTA, she said- "But I do have some reservations. Look at migration in this country – the largest group of people who overstay are Indian migrants."
“We even reached an agreement with the Indian government last year to encourage and facilitate better cooperation in this regard. It has not necessarily worked very well,” the 42-year-old minister said.
Braverman was referencing the Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) clinched between her predecessor in the Home Office, Indian-origin former Home Secretary Priti Patel, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in May last year.
"This landmark agreement with our close partners in the government of India will provide new opportunities to thousands of young people in the UK and India seeking to live, work and experience each other’s cultures. This agreement will also ensure that the British government can remove those with no right to be in the UK more easily and crack down on those abusing our system," Patel said of the MMP at the time.
But Braverman’s contention that the pact has not worked very well is seen as a clear indication that she is unlikely to back her boss, Liz Truss, on any further visa offers that are expected to be a part of a wider FTA.
It comes in the wake of her comments at the Conservative Party annual conference earlier this week, where she targeted "low-skilled migrants" and the growing numbers of student visas being issued.
"We should be looking more at students. We’ve had a massive increase in the number of students coming into this country. I do think we do get to a point where we have to look at some of the courses that people are doing in this country, some of the institutions, they are not always very good quality," said Braverman.
"I think it's legitimate to question whether that is going to serve our economic objectives, and taking a more discerning, smart approach to the number of student visas I think is highly consistent with our agenda for growth," she noted.
Her intervention comes at a time when India has overtaken China as the country with the highest number of student visas issued to study at higher education institutions in the UK. According to the latest Home Office data, around 118,000 Indian students received a UK student visa in the year ending June 2022 – an 89 per cent increase from the previous year.
Indians have also consistently topped the charts of highly skilled migrants issued visas to live and work in the UK.
Under a new FTA, it has been widely expected that India would be seeking to bolster that trend for its students and professionals as part of an enhanced two-way exchange across different sectors.
