The air force's MiG-21 fleet is in the process of being phased out since 2022.&nbsp;

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has temporarily grounded its fleet of around 50 MiG-21 fighter aircraft following the crash of one of the jets in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh nearly two weeks ago, people familiar with the matter said on Saturday.
Three persons were killed after the MiG-21 aircraft crashed into a house in Hanumangarh shortly after it took off for a routine training sortie from the Air Force Station at Suratgarh on May 8.
The people cited above said all the MiG-21 aircraft are currently undergoing technical evaluation and checks, adding they will be allowed to fly only after clearance by the teams concerned carrying out the scrutiny.
The crash of the jet had again put the spotlight on the ageing fleet of Soviet-origin aircraft which were involved in around 400 accidents since their first induction in the early 1960s.
The MiG-21s used to be the mainstay of the IAF for a long period of time. After the first induction, the IAF procured over 870 MiG-21 fighters to boost its overall combat prowess.
However, the aircraft has a very poor safety record. According to official data, MiG-21s were involved in 400 crashes in the last six decades.
At present, the IAF has three MiG-21 squadrons with a total of around 50 aircraft, according to officials.
The IAF last year finalised a timeline of three years to phase out the remaining MiG-21 fighter squadrons.
The IAF also plans to start the phasing out of the three squadrons of Mig-29 fighter jets in the next five years.
As part of the IAF's modernisation plan, the defence ministry in February 2021 sealed a Rs 48,000 crore deal with the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the procurement of 83 Tejas jets.
The IAF has already procured 36 Rafale jets to enhance its combat capabilities.
It is also in the process of acquiring 114 Medium Role Fighter Aircraft.

Two pilots of the Indian Air Force (IAF) were killed on Thursday night when their twin-seater Mig-21 trainer aircraft crashed during a training sortie near Barmer in Rajasthan.

The IAF said the aircraft was on a sortie from Utarlai air base and the accident took place at around 9:10 pm in which both the pilots lost their lives.

The accident once again put the spotlight on the IAF's ageing fleet of Soviet-origin <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/mig-21-crashes-in-rajasthan-pilot-dies-indian-air-force-1640366648904">Mig-21 aircraft</a> which were involved in around 200 accidents since their first induction in the early 1960s.
"A twin seater Mig-21 trainer aircraft of the IAF was airborne for a training sortie from Utarlai air base in Rajasthan this evening," the IAF said in a statement.
"Around 9:10 pm, the aircraft met with an accident near Barmer. Both pilots sustained fatal injuries. The IAF deeply regrets the loss of lives and stands firmly with the bereaved families," it said.
The IAF said a court of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.
<a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/rajnath-singh-on-agnipath-scheme-will-review-if-any-shortcomings-emerge-1656214593139">Defence Minister Rajnath Singh</a> spoke to Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari following the crash.
In a tweet, Singh expressed his anguish over the death of the two pilots.
"Deeply anguished by the loss of two Air Warriors due to an accident of IAF's Mig-21 trainer aircraft near Barmer in Rajasthan," Singh said.
"Their service to the nation will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of sadness," he said.
The IAF has not yet put out the names of the two pilots.

In March, Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhat said in the Rajya Sabha that 42 defence personnel were killed in accidents involving aircraft and helicopters of the three services in the last five years.
The total number of air accidents in the last five years was 45, out of which 29 involved IAF's platforms.&nbsp;

According to an Indian Express report, there have been 6 crashes involving the Bison version of MiG-21 in the last 20 months. 5 pilots died in those crashes.
The Indian Express report also states that more than 170 pilots have lost their lives in MiG-21 crashes according to Defence Ministry data and more than 20 crashes have been reported since 2010. The report further adds that 38 MiG-21s crashed between 2003 and 2013.
An India Today exported quoted experts as saying that the number of Mig-21 crashes are high because they form the bulk of the Indian Air Force’s inventory.
The report also says that delays in induction of new fighter jets has led to the Indian Air Force keeping the MiG-21 in service for longer.
Currently, the Indian Air Force has 4 MiG-21 squadrons with around 70 jets and it plans to retire the  Soviet-origin aircraft fleet by 2025. One of the squadrons will be phased out in September this year. The remaining three will be phased out over the next three years.

However, the F-21 is just an upgraded version of the F-16 as per some experts. A factor working in the F-21's favour is the fact that the company has already signed a deal with Tata to manufacture the plane's wings in India. However, the jet might not impress the Indian Air Force as one of its MiG-21s shot down a Pakistani F-16 in 2019.
Next is the Sukhoi Su-35. Russia might offer discounts to India as it struggles with Western sanctions over the Ukraine war. However, the Su-35 is an air superiority fighter, and not a multirole aircraft as India wants. Multirole jets are less powerful but can also do ground attacks. However, technology transfer as part of the deal might help upgrade India's existing Su-30 fleet.

Let's take a look at the Eurofighter Typhoon now. It is a proven platform with over half-a-dozen European and Gulf countries using the jet. However, buying this would mean that India has to manage separate maintenance infrastructure for the Rafales and the Typhoons.

However, many of its features are similar to the made-in-India LCA Tejas jet. This might hurt the Swedish plane's case.
This deal is very important for the Indian Air Force to maintain its strength amid threats from Pakistan and China. The IAF currently has 30 squadrons, which will go down further as older aircraft are phased out of service. The sanctioned squadron strength is 42. Each squadron has around 16-18 aircraft.
The ongoing process is to buy 114 fighter jets for the Indian Air Force. Eighteen of the planes will be imported, while 96 will be made in India. For domestic manufacturing, Indian companies will partner up with foreign firms. For the first time ever, payment of around 70% of the cost will be done in Indian currency, as per reports.
As India faces increasing challenges at its borders, the country will have to get rid of its dependence on foreign weapons. To do this, India will have to take advantage of deals like the current one to make sure it gets access to technology and knowledge to be able to make its own advanced fighter jets in the future.
