Kolkata metro remains the only metro system in India that is controlled and operated by the Indian Railways. Representing a critical milestone in India's infrastructure development, the Kolkata Metro extension, features the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Metro section which includes the first transportation tunnel in India to pass under a major river.

As per Swarajya, the construction cost of the metro line is Rs 8,600 crore. The metro is expected to cover a 520-metre stretch under the river Hooghly in 45 seconds. Howrah will be the deepest Metro station (33 meters below the surface) in the country.
The Kolkata metro is planning to to start commercial operation in the entire route of East-West alignment between Salt Lake Sector V and Howrah Maidan in June-July. However, The Salt Lake Sector V to Sealdah stretch of the East-West Metro corridor is commercially operational at present.

Germany's state owned investment and development bank KfW is set to sign an agreement with Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) to provide &euro;500 million (around ₹4,500 crore). As per Mint, this fund will be used for the expansion of Bengaluru Metro.&nbsp;
KfW&rsquo;s India director Wolf Muth in an interview to Mint confirmed that the funding would be used to construct new lines for the Bengaluru Metro, also called Namma Metro.&nbsp;
&ldquo;We bring in a lot of capacity and expertise with respect to environmental and social aspects. So, we have high standards and these are things which have to be adapted in the project execution," Muth told Mint.
<h3>Metro funding</h3>
The funding involves loans and grants which will also be used to provide technical expertise to the metro project. The bank is looking to expand its funding for green energy and sustainable mobility projects in India and is also financing metro projects in Mumbai and Nagpur among other cities.

The bank has previously provided funds to Nagpur and Mumbai for the expansion of metro lines. In 2016, it provided a &euro;500 million loan to the Indian government for the construction of a modern and sustainable metro system in Nagpur and in 2020 it provided &euro;545 million loan for the expansion of Mumbai metro.
Apart from this, Germany has also committed to provide at least &euro;10 billion in assistance to India for its green and sustainable development ambitions with KfW providing an estimated &euro;1 billion annually for funding in India.

Anticipating increased footfall of passengers owing to the upcoming G20 Summit here, Delhi Metro will sell 'Tourist Smart Cards&rsquo; through dedicated counters at 36 stations from September 4-13, officials said.
These are available in two categories -- one-day validity and three-day validity cards -- offering "unlimited rides" in the metro network.

These 'Tourist Smart Cards' are available on regular days too, but in view of the G20 Summit, dedicated counters have been opened which would start selling these cards for a period of 10 days starting Monday, a senior official said.
The G20 Leaders' Summit is slated to take place in New Delhi from September 9-10.
These dedicated counters have been provided to "facilitate G20 delegates and international visitors who might be interested in exploring the prominent tourist places of the capital city as they arrive in Delhi, owing to the upcoming G20 Summit," he said.
The one-day validity Tourist Smart Card will be available for Rs 200, whereas, three-day validity card will be available for Rs 500. This amount also includes a refundable security deposit of Rs 50, the DMRC said.
The 36 stations where these cards will be sold through dedicated counters include -- Kashmere Gate, Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazar, New Delhi, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan, Lok Kalyan Marg and Supreme Court metro stations.

PM Modi inaugurates Phase-I of Nagpur Metro rail project, takes train ride

This project has been developed at a cost of more than Rs 8,650 crore, officials said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated Phase-I of the Nagpur Metro rail project and took a ride in the train.
He also laid the foundation stone of Phase-II of the metro project in the city.
The prime minister took a ride in the metro rail between Zero Mile Freedom Park and Khapri stations. Before boarding the train, he visited an exhibition on the project at the Zero Mile station.
There are 36 stations under Phase-I of the project, which covers a distance of 40 km. This project has been developed at a cost of more than Rs 8,650 crore, officials said.
Phase-II of the project will be developed at more than Rs 6,700 crore. It will have 32 stations and cover a distance of 43.8 km, they said.

In order to facilitate the movement of spectators for the series-deciding 3rd ODI between India and South Africa, Delhi Metro will extend the timing for the last train on all lines by 30-45 minutes on Tuesday, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has confirmed.
DMRC said that it will operate an additional 48 trains on Tuesday so that spectators can use the metro after the match to safely reach their destinations. The metro stations closest to the stadium are the Delhi Gate metro station and the ITO metro station, both on the Violet Line.
"This will enable spectators to reach their destinations smoothly by using the metro,” said Anuj Dayal, principal executive director of corporate communication at the DMRC.

Delhi Metro train timings for Tuesday

Similarly, the last trains on the Yellow Line will depart Samaypur Badli at 11:50 pm and depart Huda City Centre at 11:20 pm. On the Blue Line, the last train will depart Noida Electronic City at 11:25 pm and will depart Dwarka Sector 21 at 11:10 pm.
The last train on the Magenta Line will depart at 12:40 am from Janakpuri West towards Botanical Garden, while on the Grey Line from Dwarka to Dhansa Bus Stand, the last metro will leave Dwarka at 1 am.

The Delhi excise department has started opening liquor shops at metro station premises with an eye on better sales owing to high footfall in the area, officials said Saturday.
Over half a dozen liquor shops have been opened at Metro stations with big premises, including in Badarpur, Dwarka, Karol Bagh, Rajouri Garden and Mundka, a senior Excise department officer said.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is being approached to get permission to open liquor shops by government undertakings at other stations, he said.
"Metro stations have a high footfall and that is a big factor in ensuring access to liquor products and thereby more revenue. Some vends have already opened at bigger Metro station premises and others will soon come up," the excise department officer said.
The DMRC has issued licences for built-up shops on commercial terms to the Delhi Consumers' Cooperative Wholesale Store Ltd (DCCWS) to open liquor stores at over half a dozen metro stations, officials said.
Four Delhi government undertakings – Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC), Delhi State Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC), Delhi Delhi State Civil Supplies Corporation (DSCSC) and DCCWS – have to open 500 liquor vends across the city by September.
The four agencies will together open 200 more vends by year-end, officials said.
"Apart from commercial centres, shopping centres and malls, metro stations provide a good opportunity for better sales due to space availability and high footfall. Soon, with DMRC permission other corporations too will open shops at Metro premises," officials said.
The excise department has already issued close to 450 licences to the four corporations. More than 350 liquor vends operated by these four agencies are currently running in the city.
In July, the government withdrew its Excise Policy, 2021-22 after L G VK Saxena recommended a CBI probe into its alleged irregularities. The government has reverted to the old excise regime that was operational before November 17, 2021, when the 2021-22 policy had come to effect with the opening of liquor stores by private players.
The four government agencies are searching for suitable space for setting up liquor vends as soon as possible to ensure normal supply and increase excise revenue.
"We are also planning to give licences for wine and beer shops which will only sell light alcoholic beverages and rather than those with higher alcohol content like rum and whisky," said the excise officer.
He said metro stations near non-conforming municipal wards are ideally suited for opening liquor stores. There are 67 municipal wards in the city where liquor stores can not be opened due to restrictions imposed by the Master Plan.
The built-up shops at Metro station premises are also often spacious that serve the purpose of providing consumers experience of swankier vends. Presently, the four agencies entrusted with running liquor shops are hard-pressed to ensure proper space for the vends that require a minimum 300 square feet floor area.
"We are trying to ensure that the shops have at least 300 square feet of space but some adjustment is being made as smaller shops have to be rented with no option left," an official said, adding wherever metro premises do not have shops, nearby areas are being explored for opening vends.

The Aam Aadmi Party’s big-ticket scheme to let women passengers use the Delhi Metro for free has hit an administrative hurdle. The proposal will have to be cleared by the committee that decides on fares and take at least eight months to be implemented, officials of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation have told the government, The Hindustan Times reported.
