In a stunning disclosure, Australia's six-time World Cup-winning former women's cricket team captain Meg Lanning has said that her early retirement at 31 was forced by bouts of depression and weight-loss due to "over-exercising and under-fuelling".
Lanning took a six-month mental health break after winning the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham to work in a coffee shop. She eventually retired after skipping three international assignments, including the Ashes, in 2023 but did not disclose her reasons at that time.
"It sort of just spiralled and I was in denial, even though everyone kept telling me something wasn't quite right. I was not in a place to be able to go on tour and play cricket and give the commitment levels required for that Ashes series, mentally and physically," Lanning told 'The Howie Games' podcast.
The most successful skipper in the history of Australian cricket, Lanning's last big success was leading the team to victory in the T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2023.
The 32-year-old said it reached a point where she lost appetite and began eating only two meals a day after running around 90km a week, which led to significant weight loss.
"I was over-exercising and under-fuelling. I got down to about 57kg from 64kg. I did not realise (it affected) my ability to concentrate. I didn't really want to see other people...I disengaged a lot from friends and family.
"It was just all out of whack and I kept sliding. At some point, it's got to stop," Lanning said candidly.
She also battled insecurities like a lot of other elite sportspersons and all of it primarily boiled down to one question -- "what after when all this is over?" "I felt very out of control in terms of what my future looked like: 'If it's not cricket, what does life look like if I am not playing?'." A self-confessed introvert, Lanning became more lonely between last year's T20 World Cup and the inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League in India where she led Delhi Capitals to the finals.
"World Cup, WPL last year probably was when I was getting a little bit out of control in terms of the obsessive side of what I was doing. I don't sit still normally but it was just like no days off, can't eat your meal until you've gone for a big run. That's when it took hold a fair bit." She then revealed how she was completely cut-off from the rest of her teammates and also friends.
"It was a bit of my coping mechanism, I'd love just chucking the headphones in and going for a run. I could escape mentally. I'd throw the headphones and I wouldn't take my phone with me. I'd just have my Apple watch on for some music, so nobody could contact me," the stylish right-handed batter said.
Lanning did not realise when solitude became a "new normal" for her.
"It became an obsession. I could escape mentally, no one could contact me, and I felt like I was in control. Initially it didn't start off as a deliberate thing, it just became a bit of a new normal." "But it slowly crept into conscious decisions because essentially I felt good, I was light, I could run heaps and I wasn't getting injured like everybody was telling me I was going to." Lanning said at one stage was so depressed that even two hours of sound sleep became a thing of past.
"I dreaded night time because I knew I would go to bed and not be able to sleep. That would make me so mad. I would just get more angry with myself. If you can't sleep, you can't do anything.'' The most astonishing part of this tough journey was that her on-field form never dipped.
"No matter what was happening, I was always able to perform. (But) it had become a bit of auto pilot." Lanning scored 8352 runs from 241 international matches across three formats after making her debut in a T20I in 2010.
She said she has been better since giving up the rigours of international cricket.
"I feel like I'm in a good spot now. Cricket is still part of what I do. But I wasn't cut out for the international touring schedule and what came with all of that," Lanning said.&nbsp;

Sent in to bat, Lanning fired at the top with a 38-ball 53, while Jemimah hit an entertaining 33-ball 69 to provide the late acceleration as DC racked up a massive 192/4 after the WPL juggernaut moved to the national capital amid lukewarm response.
Mumbai Indians' chase never took off as they managed 163/8 despite Amanjot Kaur's 42 off 27 and Hayley Matthews' 29 off 17 as the defending champions crashed to their second defeat in five matches and only second against DC in WPL history.
This was Delhi's fourth win on the trot as they moved two points clear of Mumbai with eight points from five matches.
DC thus consolidated their position at the top with the win which will act like a balm for the home team, which had suffered a heartbreaking last-ball loss to the MI in the tournament opener.
In contrast to the roaring success in the first leg, the first game of the Delhi leg saw a sparse crowd at the Arun Jaitley Stadium which build up as the match wore on but still couldn't match the 'crowd energy' of Bengaluru.
The hosts, however, put on a show with their bowlers producing a clinical display while defending the total.
Returning after missing the last game, Marizanne Kapp once again did the damage in the powerplay, taking two wickets -- Yastika Bhatia (6) and Harmanpreet Kaur (6), while fellow pacer Shikha Pandey cleaned up Nat Sciver-Brunt (5) to leave MI on shaky grounds.
Opener Matthews made a strokeful 17-ball 29 before being caught by Alice Capsey off left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen (3/21), while 19-year-old pacer Titas Sadhu removed Amelia Kerr (17) as MI lost half their side in 9th over.
The 23-year-old Amanjot smacked seven fours on way to her 42 to give a tinge of hope but once she was castled by Jonassen, the runrate kept piling up and it became too tall a task.
Earlier, opener Lanning hit the ball across the ropes six times and twice over it en route to her third half-century, and added three useful partnerships to anchor the DC innings for the most part.
Later Jemimah smashed 8 fours and 3 sixes to take DC close to the 200-mark. Shafali Verma (28) and Alice Capsey (19) too chipped in with quick cameos.
Pacer Shabnim Ismail, who had missed last two games, was put under the pump by Shafali, who carted her for two fours.
Lanning, on the other hand, blasted the first maximum, flicking Sciver-Brunt over long on, and then hit a four before surviving a LBW appeal in the fourth over which yielded 14 runs.
Shafali then clobbered Ismail for back-to-back sixes but the bowler had her caught behind as Delhi reached 56 for one in six overs.
Capsey added 31 with Lanning, hitting three boundaries before dragging one on to the stumps while trying a reverse slap.
Lanning carried on and plundered two fours and a six off Amelia Kerr, who conceded 20 runs in that over, as DC crossed the 100-mark.
The skipper completed her fifty in 36 balls with a four off Pooja Vastrakar in 13th over but perished a ball later with Kerr claiming the vital catch.
Mumbai tried to pull things back thereafter but Jemimah upped the scoring rate with a flurry of boundaries as DC scored 69 in last five overs.
She reached her fifty with a six off Sciver-Brunt in the 19th over.

Lanning (55, 41b, 6x4, 1x6) was Capitals&rsquo; guiding force to an adequate 163/8 despite a late flurry of wickets.

Jonassen led Capitals&rsquo; bowling with a shrewd spell (3/22) and she received very good support from Radha Yadav (3/20). The win also propelled Delhi to the top of the table with six points.
The Gujarat side made a shaky start, conceding a maiden in the very first over to WPL debutant pacer Titas Sadhu.
Their beginning was further marred when experienced pacer Shikha Pandey castled Laura Wolvaardt with a delivery that shaped in that tiny bit to beat her swat.
But the Giants too found some flow as captain Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield combined to smash 15 runs in the fourth over bowled by Pandey.
However, it was just an isolated spark as the Giants stumbled against Jonassen. In the fifth over, the Australian spinner jettisoned Mooney and Litchfield in the space of four balls to reduce Giants to 34 for three.
Gardner displayed her power while hammering pacer Annabel Sutherland for two fours and a six in the 12th over to make a total of 16 runs.
It might have given a tinge of hope to the Giants but Jonassen snuffed that out when she had Gardner stumped by Taniya Bhatia.
Before that Yadav bagged the crucial wickets of Veda Krishnamoorthy and Kathryn Bryce as Gujarat struggled to stitch together any meaningful partnership.
Earlier, Lanning used her experience to pace her innings well and build a couple of good partnerships after Giants opted to field first.
Shafali Verma (13, 9b), as usual, flew off the traps with a six and four off left-arm spinner Tanuja Kanwar but her cameo came to an end very soon.
Verma's uppish flick of pacer Meghana Singh, the most successful Gujarat bowler with a four-wicket haul, went straight to Wolvaardt near backward square leg.
The dismissal brought Lanning, who was dropped on 30, and in-form Alice Capsey together. They scored 38 runs for the second wicket, helping Delhi to reach 51 for 1 in the Power Play segment.
Once Capsey departed, an edgy Jemimah Rodrigues (7 off 10) helped Lanning add 47 runs for the third wicket. Lanning shed her low-gear approach during this passage to pull some top shots out of the draw such as a massive hit for six over long-off off Kathryn Bryce.
Lanning reached her fifty in 39 balls but could not stay in the middle for long as her slash off Meghana settled in the hands of D Hemalatha at cover point.
The return of Lanning to the dug-out dashed Delhi&rsquo;s attempt to up the scoring rate as they lost wickets at regular intervals and also failed to fetch a boundary for 24 balls between 15.2 and 19.3 overs.
But by then they had put enough runs on the board.

Australian women's captain Meg Lanning on Thursday retired from international cricket, walking away as one of the game's most prolific run scorers and decorated leaders.
The 31-year-old top-order batter led Australia to four Twenty20 World Cup titles, one 50-over World Cup triumph, and a Commonwealth Games gold medal -- earning the nickname "Megastar" for her run-scoring exploits.
After 13 years of international cricket and having captained her country on 182 occasions, Lanning said it was the "right time to move on to something new".
"Team success is why you play the game, I'm proud of what I have been able to achieve and will cherish the moments shared with teammates along the way," Lanning said in a statement.
Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley praised her as "one of the finest cricketers Australia has produced" and "one of the best players in the world over a long period of time".
"Under Meg's leadership, the Australian women's cricket team has built a legacy of global dominance and has been at the forefront of growing the game and inspiring the next generation of cricketers all around the world," he added.
According to Cricket Australia, Lanning has hit more one-day centuries than any woman and is the top run-scorer for the Australian women's team.
Australia won 26 consecutive one-day games under Lanning's captaincy between 2018 and 2021, which remains that format's record-winning streak.
Off the pitch, Lanning also played a crucial role in highlighting the gender pay gap in men's and women's professional cricket.
She returned to the Australian team in January after a six-month break to "focus on myself", days after winning gold at the Commonwealth Games in August 2022.
On her return, she led Australia to victory at the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa and took Delhi Capitals to the final of the inaugural Women's Premier League in India. Lanning will continue to play in domestic competitions, Cricket Australia said.
