As a result of the government capping the ceiling costs of the majority of the scheduled drugs, the cost of 651 important medicines has decreased by an average of 6% since April

The cost of 651 essential medicines has come down by an average of 6% from April with the government capping ceiling prices of a majority of the scheduled drugs, NPPA said on Monday.
In a tweet, the national drug price regulator said the government has been able to fix the ceiling prices of 651 medicines so far out of the total 870 scheduled drugs listed under the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM).
The health ministry had amended NLEM in September 2022 and it now has a total of 870 drugs.
The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) noted that with the capping of ceiling prices, the cost of 651 essential drugs on average had already come down by 16%.
'Due to this, the price of 651 essential drugs, which was to go up by 12%, has actually come down by 6% per cent from April 1,' NPPA said.
Consumers will benefit from this decline in prices despite a 12% per cent annual hike in prices of drugs based on WPI, it added.
Annual hikes in prices of drugs listed in NLEM are based on WPI.
In a statement dated March 25, NPPA had stated that the annual change in Wholesale Price Index (WPI) was 12% for 2022.
NPPA fixes the ceiling price of essential medicines of Schedule I under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order (DPCO) 2013.
The calculation for essential drugs is based on the simple average of all the medicines in a particular therapeutic segment with sales of more than 1%.

Prices for non-scheduled medications are expected to increase by up to 10% in accordance with government regulations.

Due to a sharp increase in the Wholesale Price Index, the prices of 384 medications and more than 1,000 formulations designated as necessary medicines by the government are expected to experience the highest-ever annual rise of over 12%.&nbsp;
The price of necessary medications will increase by more than 10% for the second year in succession. The price increase for these medications was about 11% last year.
According to representatives of the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority, who cited the office of the economic adviser in the minister of commerce and industry, the WPI was 12.12% between January of last year and January of this year. This number has not yet received formal notification, though.

The ministry of chemicals and fertilizers has drafted regulations to curb the operations of the e-pharmacies. According to the news channel, the government is concerned over data leak and misuse through these online platforms.
The DGCA had issued show cause notices to over 20 e-pharmacies, for violation of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940, as they were found to be selling schedule H, H1 and X without a valid licence. In response the FICCI wrote to the Union government showing concerns over the notices.
Meanwhile, the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), threatened to launch a country-wide agitation if the government didn&rsquo;t act. AIOCD has also written to FICCI, claiming that their support for e-pharmacies amounts to advocating for an illegally operating business.

<h3>1. Anaesthesia</h3>
It was late 1700s, English chemist Joseph Priestley made a gas which English chemist Humphry Davy thought could be used as pain relief in surgery, but instead, it became a recreational drug until the 1830s. That&rsquo;s when French chemist Jean Dumas made the gas named chloroform which Scottish doctor James Young used it in 1847 to assist birth. The medicine relieved surgical patients who would often die of shock from the pain. But anaesthesias are still dangerous because of the risks of suppressing the nervous system.
<h3>2. Nitroglycerin</h3>
1800s was the century of inventions but none was probably more important that the world-changing drug Nitroglycerin. Invented in 1847, Nitroglycerin displaced gunpowder as the most powerful explosive in the world and was also the first one to treat angina, the peculiar chest pain that is linked with heart disease. Known to have increased the average life span, particularly in the West, it also paved the way for medications used to lower blood pressure, and other heart ailments.
<h3>3. Penicillin</h3>
 There are several instances where you must've come across some accidental miracles and this is a classic example of that. In 1928, Scottish physician Alexander Fleming went on a holiday and left some cultures of the bacterium streptococcus on his laboratory bench. Well, when he came back from his vacation what he witnessed was going to change history and of course, he wasn't aware of that. He saw some airborne Penicillium which is a contaminated fungal that had stopped the streptococcus from growing. Later, it was mass produced and it changed the course of history as it was used in World War II. This drug surely saved the lives of several people who were suffering from septicemia.
<h3>4. Diazepam</h3>
Anti-depressant and stress relieving medication are today's things but it started as Diazepam. In 1959, Polish-American chemist Leo Sternbach chemically altered Librium in 1959 and produced a much stronger drug called diazepam. This drug was marketed in 1963 as Valium. It was cheap and easily available and from 1969 till 1982 it was the most selling drug in the US. From this drug, the culture of managing stress and anxiety with the help of medication came into existence. However, this drug had some side effects.
<h3>5. The Pill</h3>
The Pill was a game changer when it comes to contraceptive methods. In 1951, the US birth control advocate Margaret Sanger asked researcher Gregory Pincus to develop a hormonal contraceptive. During the research, Pincus found that progesterone was helpful to stop ovulation and was used to develop a trial pill.
In 1960, the new drug was released and it took almost ten years to prove a link between oral contraceptive use and its serious side effects.
Due to the drug, now there are small families and increased incomes as women also started joining the workforce. However, it&rsquo;s still raising questions about how the medical profession has experimented on women&rsquo;s bodies.

According to a study by the University of Zurich, "75 percent of the world&rsquo;s medicinal plant applications are only known in one language." When these languages are not recorded and passed on from one generation to another, a lot of valuable information gets lost in the process. A doctor couple from Mumbai has started Meds For More, a citizen initiative to collect unused medicines from Covid-19 recovered patients and donate it to primary health care centres in rural areas. They have partnered with multiple non-government organisations to distribute the medicines.
Dr Marcus Ranney and Dr Raina from Cuffe Parade&nbsp;collected 20kg of unused medicines in just 10 days.
Along with medicines like antibiotics, steroids, vitamins, antacids among others, which are being prescribed to Covid patients, the couple is also collecting equipment like oximeters and thermometers. Al medicines are segregated and checked for expiry dates.At present they are sending consignments to Maharashtra and Gujarat but they aim to gradually expand to other states as well.The initiative, so far in progress in Mumbai, is extremely feasible and can be also replicated in other cities, according to the Meds For More team.&nbsp;

Along with medicines like antibiotics, steroids, vitamins, antacids among others, which are being prescribed to Covid patients, the couple is also collecting equipment like oximeters and thermometers. Al medicines are segregated and checked for expiry dates. At present they are sending consignments to Maharashtra and Gujarat but they aim to gradually expand to other states as well. The initiative, so far in progress in Mumbai, is extremely feasible and can be also replicated in other cities, according to the Meds For More team.&nbsp;

A doctor couple from Mumbai has started Meds For More, a citizen initiative to collect unused medicines from Covid-19 recovered patients and donate it to primary health care centres in rural areas. Dr Marcus Ranney and Dr Raina from Cuffe Parade&nbsp;collected 20kg of unused medicines in just 10 days and have partnered with multiple non-government organisations for distribution.
