"Media and technology are like helmets in a cricket kit," former India captain and coach Ravi Shastri said on Friday, urging players to "embrace" both, as without them, the sport wouldn't have evolved the way it did in the last 40-45 years.
Shastri said while there were only two mediums -- radio and Doordarshan (TV)&mdash;during his playing days, the game has come a long way after India won the 1983 World Cup.
"India has won a lot of tournaments in the last 40 years since we first won it in 1983. We made people dream," the 62-year-old Shastri said during a panel discussion on 'Intersection of Sports, Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Media' at the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) here.
"But you need the support. It's like you had pads in your kit bag, you had a cricket bat in your kit bag, and media is part of the kit bag. Media and technology are like a helmet in your cricket bag; you jolly well embrace it." Shastri said technology, especially, is an essential element of sport now, and players need to know how to use it to build themselves.
"So you jolly well embrace technology. AI (artificial intelligence) is coming into play now big time. It's for your benefit. It's for the team's benefit, and it's for the growth of the game at the end of it all," he said.
Shastri said the brand association earlier was only restricted to logos and doing advertisements, but all that has changed with several broadcast platforms coming up.
"I have seen this game evolve; each one of the players here has been a part of it to see where the game has gone in the last 40-45 years... Without these platforms, the game wouldn't have evolved the way it has," he said.
"In my time it was radio and Doordarshan. The relationship with brands was only (about) ads; it was (about) logos." "There was no brand association; there was no social media. There was no podcast, but this is where it is going, and it is only getting bigger," he added.
Shastri said the varied platforms have increased the visibility of a player, which was not the case before.
"We are a country of 1.5 billion people. We are young; 70 percent of the people are below the age of 30. Sport is something that drives you, and if you think it didn't drive them, it woke them up during Covid (pandemic).
"It brought smiles to their faces when India played, wherever they played, whatever sport, whether it was cricket, football, hockey, or whatever. When you performed, you got even bigger smiles.
"Even when you were in lockdown or quarantine or whatever. But why could they see it? Because of the platforms that exist," he said.
Shastri also stressed the benefits of the technology enjoyed by modern-day players.
"What technology has done for the sport is unbelievable. Today, a player can go back and watch himself 100 times. There'll be enough replays showing what he's done right and what he's done wrong," he said.
"There's technology to go even more into detail, to tell you more about your opponent, about yourself, about your strengths, and your weaknesses to then take on opposition wherever it exists and kill them."

From CNN to the Washington Post, US media are facing tough times, as a series of outlets have announced layoffs this winter amid fears of an economic downturn.
Vox Media, owner of the Vox and The Verge websites as well as the landmark New York Magazine and its online platforms, announced Friday it was letting go seven percent of its staff.
The news follows layoffs at CNN, NBC, MSNBC, Buzzfeed and other outlets.
In a memo to staff on Friday, Vox Media CEO Jim Bankoff announced "The difficult decision to eliminate roughly seven percent of our staff roles across departments due to the challenging economic environment impacting our business and industry."
The memo, which was confirmed to AFP by Vox Media, said the affected employees were going to be notified of being let go within the next 15 minutes. That would mean some 130 out of the group's 1,900 staff.
Meghan McCarron, an award-winning journalist who spent more than nine years at Eater, a food website owned by Vox Media, tweeted Friday she was among those laid off -- while 37 weeks pregnant.
"My partner and I are so excited to become parents," McCarron posted. "I can&rsquo;t really process the amount of uncertainty we&rsquo;re now facing," she added.
A Vox spokesperson told AFP they could not comment on specific cases, but that employees were offered "competitive severance packages," including extra severance pay for those with "a near-term upcoming parental leave planned."
Journalists who were laid off from other organizations in recent weeks have also taken to Twitter to express anger, dismay, or gratitude to their colleagues, while beginning to look for a new job.
"I&rsquo;ll be figuring out my next move. I&rsquo;m a data reporter but I also write and produce," tweeted Emily Siegel, who was let go after five years as an investigative reporter at NBC. "I&rsquo;d love to keep doing this work. My (direct messages) are open."
While the media layoffs were not as dramatic as those rocking tech giants such as Microsoft and Google, which announced Friday it was cutting 12,000 more jobs, they were a consequence of falling advertising revenue amid a gloomy economic climate, said Chris Roush, dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.
"For a lot of them, they grew and expanded on the expectation that they were going to be able to grow their audience, or either readers or viewers to a certain level," &nbsp;Roush told AFP."And that just hasn't happened and is unlikely to happen given what's happening in the economy."

"Journalism has been under pressure for a long time, and a number of companies seem to think this is an opportune time to reduce their labor costs - hurting both journalists and journalism," the Writers Guild of America, East said in a statement to AFP.
The union comprises journalists from NBC and MSNBC. The two outlets, which declined an AFP request for comment, bid farewell to some 75 employees, according to US media.
A similar announcement is dreaded at the Washington Post, where CEO Fred Ryan warned last month that "a number of positions" will be cut in the following weeks, adding that the layoffs would affect "a single digit percentage of our employee base" of some 2,500 people. Hires for other positions can continue, the paper said.
The Washington Post Magazine, the paper's Sunday supplement which won two Pulitzer prizes, was shut down in December as part of what executive editor Sally Buzbee described in a memo as the paper's "global and digital transformation."
And Vice Media CEO Nancy Dubuc announced to her staff Friday that the company is up for sale.
In recent months, CNN has laid off an estimated several hundred workers out of a total of some 4,000 people, according to US media. CNN would not confirm those figures to AFP.
The cuts took place as the company underwent a restructuring following a merger between Warner Media, which includes CNN and HBO Max, and Discovery. The merger resulted in the creation of the Warner Bros. Discovery mega conglomerate.
Following the merger, CNN's new parent company abruptly pulled the plug on the network's $100 million streaming service CNN+.
Naveen Sarma, a senior media analyst with S&amp;P Global Rating, noted a "steep, secular decline" of traditional broadcast and cable television in the United States, leading to a dramatic drop in subscriptions to paid TV.
"That's a constant ongoing struggle for all these companies to come in," said Sarma.
Roush of Quinnipiac University says the changes were especially painful for smaller media.
"CNN, Washington Post, those are not going away, but a smaller company, they have bigger issues, because they're just smaller and not as well established as a media brand," he said.

India's foreign minister recently sparked a debate on whether American media is biased and unfair in its portrayal of India and Indian affairs. At a recent event organised by the Indian-American community in Washington, DC, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said, "There are some newspapers - you know exactly what they're going to write, including one in this town. The more India goes its way, and the people who believe that they were the custodians, and shapers of India, lose ground in India, the more some of this debate is going to come outside. They're not winning in India. So, they will try and win outside India, or try and shape India from outside."

In November 2018, a Washington Post article accused Modi of being silent on controversies roiling India. The article said that before being elected, Modi used to call then-PM Manmohan Singh "Maun-mohan" for "saying too little about matters of national importance".
ON FARMERS STIR'
Another issue which saw comprehensive reportage by US media was the year-long protest by Indian farmers at the Delhi border.
A piece in the Washington Post in December 2020 had wondered whether the protesting farmers can "restore" Indian democracy even as the Modi government "guts the promise of equality for all" in the Indian Constitution. Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Thursday&nbsp;took a section media to task pointing out that there&nbsp; are&nbsp;communal overtones in their reporting.
