Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal argued that the report appeared to "challenge" the integrity of certain legal judgements given by Indian courts.

In an unusually hard-hitting response to criticism against it in a US government report on religious freedom, India on Friday described the findings as "deeply biased", visibly driven by "votebank" considerations and a mix of imputations and selective usage of facts.
Dismissing the report, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said it selectively picked incidents to advance a "preconceived narrative" and even appeared to challenge the integrity of certain legal judgments pronounced by Indian courts.
The US State Department's 2023 report on religious freedom referred to violent attacks on minority communities in India including killings and assaults besides citing violence in the northeastern state of Manipur.
"As in the past, the report is deeply biased, lacks understanding of India's social fabric and is visibly driven by vote bank considerations and a prescriptive outlook. We, therefore, reject it," Jaiswal said.
"The exercise itself is a mix of imputations, misrepresentations, selective usage of facts, reliance on biased sources and a one-sided projection of issues," he said.
"This extends even to the depiction of our Constitutional provisions and duly enacted laws of India. It has selectively picked incidents to advance a preconceived narrative as well," Jaiswal added.
The spokesperson argued that the report appeared to "challenge" the integrity of certain legal judgements given by Indian courts.
"In some cases, the very validity of laws and regulations are questioned by the report, as are the right of legislatures to enact them," he said.
"The report has also targeted regulations that monitor misuse of financial flows into India. Suggesting that the burden of compliance is unreasonable, it seeks to question the need for such measures," Jaiswal said.
He said the United States has even more stringent laws and regulations and would surely not prescribe such solutions for itself.
Human rights and respect for diversity have been and remain a legitimate subject of discussion between India and the US, he added.
"In 2023, India has officially taken up numerous cases in the US of hate crimes, racial attacks on Indian nationals and other minorities, vandalization and targeting of places of worship, violence and mistreatment by law enforcement authorities, as well as the according of political space to advocates of extremism and terrorism abroad," he said.
"However, such dialogues should not become a licence for foreign interference in other polities," Jaiswal said.
In his remarks at the release of the report on Wednesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said there has been a "concerning increase" in anti-conversion laws, hate speech, and demolitions of homes and places of worship of members of minority faith communities in India.

Responding to the report, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that such speculative and irresponsible comments are not helpful since a high-level committee set up by the Indian government is probing the matter.&nbsp;
"The report in question makes unwarranted and unsubstantiated imputations on a serious matter. There is an ongoing investigation of the High-Level Committee set up by the Government of India to look into the security concerns shared by the US government on networks of organised criminals, terrorists, and others. Speculative and irresponsible comments on it are not helpful."
The report by the US-based newspaper names one RAW officer Vikram Yadav, claiming that he had hired a hit team and plotted an attack on Pannun on American soil.
The report further claimed that Yadav, who is said to be working with a different government organisation now, forwarded details about Pannun, including his New York address, to the hit team.

Several Indian nationals have been "duped" to work with the Russian Army and India has strongly taken up the matter with Moscow for their early discharge, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said strong action has been initiated against agents and unscrupulous elements who recruited the Indians on false pretexts and promises.
Jaiswal said India remains committed to ensure the early release of its nationals serving as support staff with the Russian Army.
The MEA spokesperson's comments at his weekly media briefing came days after Indian national Mohammed Asfan from Hyderabad, who was duped into joining Russia's war against Ukraine, was killed.
The Indian Embassy in Moscow on Wednesday confirmed Asfan's death in a post on X without mentioning the reason or circumstances behind his demise. Another Indian, who also had worked as a support staff to the Russian army, died several days back.
The MEA spokesperson said India is trying its best to bring back their mortal remains.
He around 20 people have contacted the Indian government and it is doing its best to locate them.
However, the exact number of Indians working as support staff to the Russian Army is not yet known.
In his remarks, Jaiswal appealed to Indian nationals to not get "swayed" by offers made by agents for support jobs with the Russian Army, saying it is fraught with danger and risk to life.
"Several Indian nationals have been duped to work with the Russian Army. We have strongly taken up the matter with the Russian government for early discharge of such Indian nationals," he said.
The MEA spokesperson said strong action has been initiated against agents and unscrupulous elements who recruited the Indians on "false pretexts and promises".
"The CBI yesterday busted a major human trafficking network conducting searches in several cities and collecting incriminating evidence. A case of human trafficking has been registered against several agents," he said.
"We once again appeal to Indian nationals to not be swayed by offers made by agents for support jobs with the Russian Army. This is fraught with danger and risk to life," he said.
Jaiswal said India remains committed to ensure early release of the Indian nationals serving as support staff to the Russian Army.
"We remain committed to the early release of our nationals serving as support staff with the Russian Army and their eventual return home," he said.
According to media reports, many Indians recruited as security helpers in the Russian military, have been forced to even fight with Russian soldiers in certain areas along Russia's border with Ukraine.

Minister of State in the MEA, V Muraleedharan said in Lok Sabha that the government attaches the highest priority to the safety, security and well-being of Indians in foreign countries, including those in the foreign jails.
He was replying to a question.&nbsp; The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has the highest 1,926 Indian prisoners followed by Saudi Arabia with 1,362 and Nepal having 1,222 inmates, according to the details provided by Muraleedharan in Lok Sabha.
"As per the information available with the ministry, the number of Indian prisoners, including under-trials, in foreign prisons at present is 8,343," Muraleedharan said.
He said India has signed agreements on transfer of sentenced persons (TSP) with 31 countries.

The Centre has reportedly issued directions for blocking multiple YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing links to the BBC documentary "India: The Modi Question", according to sources to PTI.
The directions on blocking access were understood to have been issued by Secretary in the MEA, Apurva Chandra, on January 20 using the emergency powers under the IT Rules, 2021, a PTI report said.

Different countries will engage with the Taliban regime in different ways, and India has a set of interests when it comes to engaging with them, the United States said on Monday, days after the first-ever Indian delegation visited Kabul since the hardline group took control over Afghanistan last year.
Last week, India sent a team led by a senior diplomat to Afghanistan last week to oversee the delivery of its humanitarian aid and meet with senior members of the Taliban regime.
The team, led by JP Singh, the external affairs ministry's point person for Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran, met the senior members of the Taliban and held discussions on India's humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said.
“There are a number of countries around the world that have a discrete set of interests in Afghanistan and who predicate their engagement with the Taliban on those interests,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price told reporters at a press conference on Monday.
“India similarly has a set of interests when it comes to the Taliban. Different countries will engage with the Taliban in different ways. We have a team on the ground in Doha that is responsible for, as appropriate, engaging with the Taliban on our set of interests just as other countries do,” Price added.
The United States will continue to monitor and take steps to increase pressure on the Taliban government to reverse some of its recent decisions in restricting the rights of women and girls, Price explained.
India has no formal diplomatic ties with the Taliban government, but its envoys have met previously with Taliban representatives in Doha, where they have an office.
The template behind India's engagement with the Taliban is based on India's historic ties with Afghanistan, India’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi has said.

Prime Minister will also hold several bilateral meetings, including with the Prime Minister of Italy.
Prime Minister will, thereafter, travel to Glasgow to attend the World Leaders' Summit of COP-26, at the invitation of the UK PM, Boris Johnson. &nbsp;The high-level segment of COP-26, titled the World Leaders' Summit (WLS), will be held on November 1-2.

India raised the issue of cross-border terrorism at the informal SAARC meeting on Thursday in which Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar addressed ministers from the region.
